it had been a day of playing outside

katie discovered that when autumn starts

to get cold the edges of the puddles

crackle under your shoe

orbee found that the air was so cold it

made the sand in the sandbox stiff

and hard to dig in and they both figured

out that

you can make steam trails with your

breath

when it's cold outside

katie and her best friend orbee had been

busy all afternoon

they had held streamers and danced with

the wind

then they tied the streamers to the

trees and let the trees do some wind

dancing

mom called out from the back door that

the yard looked joyful

and then she invited them in for a cup

of hot chocolate

katie and orbee rushed through the back

door into the warm kitchen

they had been playing outside for so

long that they smelled of trees

and wind and all those wonderful autumn

things

mum touched each of them on the tip of

their bright red noses

autumn was certainly turning cold

over their hot chocolate katie and orbee

discussed

what else they wanted to do that day

mom told them she could use some folders

when she took the washing off the line

katie and orbee love doing the folding

and offered to help mom

so after they finished their hot

chocolate the two friends and mom headed

out to the clothesline

it was getting chilly and katie and

orbee noticed the shirts were stiff

mom explained that the little water

crystals in the shirts

were frozen it was at that very moment

they all heard something

it sounded kind of like a howl and a

screech together

katie grabbed mom orbee stepped out to

see

if he could see what was coming

[Music]

and he saw nothing then the strange

sound came again

orbee looked down and there under the

bush at the back of the house

was chance looking really weird and very

desperate

when orbee burbled it was chance katie

relaxed and mum jumped into action

she knew if chance was calling like that

she was in trouble

[Music]

as mom stooped down by the bush the cat

came out right away mom could see what

her problem was

chance was covered with burrs

all mom said was oh poor chance

she carefully picked the cat up and all

three hurried inside

to help chance out all over chance

little prickly things stuck out and

pulled her fur

mom placed newspaper on the kitchen

table and then lay chance down on top of

it

chance didn't feel like lying down so he

just crouched

the only parts of her that weren't

covered in prickly burs were her legs

mom explained that chants must have

fallen into

a burr bush cats were pretty smart

and wouldn't usually go near them but

somehow chance had

mom smoked a chance using her softest

voice

once he slowly worked a burr loose she

told chance that

they would fix her up chance watched mom

and wasn't too happy about it but i

think

she knew she really needed mom's help

mom asked katie to bring over the

garbage pail

and as she pulled off the birds katie

and orbee could put them

into the garbage mom explained to the

friends that a burr plant had thought

chance was the perfect way to spread its

seed

katie and orbee looked at each other

they didn't understand

katie picked up the first bur mum asked

her to be careful not to let the burr

touch

her birds were designed to stick

and the burr even stuck to the very tip

of katie's finger

katie was worried that she would look

like chance and be just as miserable but

mom told her just to give

it a shake so katie shook her hand and

if you had been there you would have

laughed

as the burr was flung off katie's finger

it shot right up in the air

and landed right on the end of orbeez

nose orbee was very surprised to say the

least

he looked at it with crossed eye

that made mom and katie laugh then orbee

went to pull it off

and it got stuck on his finger he

dangled it from his finger and

hurried around to the garbage pail when

orbeez flicked his finger to get it off

it flipped right straight up in the air

and fell onto his head

katie and mom were laughing so hard

chance wasn't sure mom was trying to

help her anymore orbee looked around to

see what they were laughing at

and was very surprised to find out it

was him

he reached up to the top of his head and

felt the sticky burn

this time he picked it up and held it

over the garbage can

he opened his fingers and the burr fell

right in

mom was laughing and still carefully

pulling burrs as she said

this could take a while everybody agreed

i have to tell you chance didn't think

this was good news

mom pointed under the sink and orbee

brought her an old rag

she told katie and orbee that it would

now be the bur-rag

when they were all done they'd throw it

away too

mom chuckled they had to outsmart the

plant and that just told you

how smart the plant was mom pulled out

the next bird

and katie helped poke it off her finger

and onto the rag

finally they were getting somewhere i

think i saw

chance smile but i'm not sure

[Music]

mom and katie and orbee worked on chants

for almost an hour

no cat was happier about getting up and

off the table than chance i can tell you

katie and orbee gave her a good brushing

to get rid of the

last little bits i think the brushing

helped chance scratch

all the itchy places she rolled around

on the floor in pleasure soon chance

looked good as new

and went for a well-deserved cat nap

that night had suffered when everybody

got up from the kitchen table

dad had a stray burr stuck on the seat

of his pants

mom stopped him and pulled it off dad

said

all the seeds in fall traveled in pretty

interesting ways but

the burr was the most clever as he threw

the burr into the garbage can he

told it there was no way it was going to

grow in his house

and i think chance who was curled up

under the couch

was the happiest of all of them to hear

that

and i hope that if you ever see a burr

bush you'll stay clear of it

you see you might just look like a

really good way to spread seeds too

and nobody wants to end up like poor

chance

at least i know i don't

[Music]

did you know the earth is changing

every day huge pieces of the earth move

around all the time

sometimes they bang into each other and

that's what makes an earthquake

millions of years ago the earth looked

like this

boy we sure have changed

[Music]

it had been a morning of wrapping

presents

katie learned that sometimes the tape

wants to stick to you more than on the

paper

orbee discovered that if you don't

measure there's no way the paper is

going to fit around the present

and they both found out that when your

present is a big

lumpy shape wrapping it is tricky

[Music]

it was a busy morning getting ready for

zack's birthday party

they were going to go to the bowling

alley orbee was very excited

in his imagination he saw himself as a

really good bowler who knocked down all

the pins

he just knew he would be fabulous

in the car dad told them that bowling

was a bit tricky and often the ball

didn't hit anything

katie and orb that was okay

at the alley zach was standing with yee

ping when katie and norbi arrived

everybody cheered because

the party could begin zach's mom penny

told the friends everybody had to wear

special shoes for bowling

the shoes would keep them from slipping

and wouldn't scratch the bowling lanes

when they were playing on them

orbee didn't usually wear shoes but if

you needed shoes for bowling he was all

for it

orbee slipped his arm and penny tied

them up they felt

a bit funny to orbee and he clamped

around for a minute to get used to them

he even did a little dance to warm up

for bullying

all the friends thought the shoes looked

funny

then penny led them to their lane she

clipped a big sheet of paper onto the

little table

and put each name on the side she told

all the friends that

as it was zack's birthday he would have

the very first turn

[Music]

the friends agreed after all a birthday

was a very special thing

penny took zach up to the lane and

lifted up a ball

she told zach to get ready because it

was quite heavy

when she gave him the ball zack felt how

heavy it was and made a funny face

then penny pointed to all the pins

standing up at the end of the lane

and she explained to the whole birthday

party that the idea was to roll the ball

to the pins and

knock them over when you knocked them

all over at once it was called

a strike orbee liked the sound of that

everybody listened carefully to learn

how it was done

penny stood behind zach and together

they rolled the ball

down the lane all the friends on the

bench stood up to see where it was going

the ball rolled and rolled and rolled

and when it got all the way down to the

pins it hit

one on the side and the pin fell over

well there was

dancing and cheering and zach was

very happy next it was yi ping's turn

penny helped yi ping too

her ball rolled right down through the

middle and it knocked down the middle

pin

there was great excitement again penny

told yee ping

if the ball had been a bit faster it

would have knocked them

all down and made a strike

yi ping nodded her head next time that's

exactly what she tried to do

katie was next katie roll the ball

carefully a tiny bit too carefully

because

the ball got almost all the way down to

the pins

and stopped no one said anything for a

minute

orbee was getting ready to burble good

try

when katie laughed so hard

she flopped down on the floor everybody

laughed with her was kind of funny to

see the ball stop

next it was orbeez turn he

was so excited he learned that the ball

had to go down the middle to get a

strike

he also learned that you have to give

the ball a big push

to get it all the way down there orbee

picked up the ball

and rolled it with all of his might at

the pins

he rolled it hard enough for sure but

the ball made a kind of

an arc and headed for the side of the

lane

it wobbled all the way down the gutter

orbee was very disappointed but he was a

good sport

and laughed too everybody had another

turn katie tried to roll the ball harder

this time it did hit a pin on the end

the pin wobbled back and forth but it

didn't fall down

katie giggles all this time

orbee had been thinking about why his

ball went down the side

he decided that this time he'd aim it a

little more

the other way and when he stood up he

was very excited because

he wanted to knock them all down so

badly

he lifted up his ball and he looked at

the pins he imagined

that when his ball rolled down all the

pins would fall

he swung his arm back and let the ball

go right down the middle of the lane but

the ball rolled off to the side again

orbee couldn't believe it behind him the

owner of the bowling alley

was talking to penny and he told her

that they had something called

gutter buffers to help keep the ball on

the lane

penny thought that was a very good idea

in a moment two men appeared with long

thin blown-up things

and they placed them in the gutters they

looked like

long long pillows this wasn't the way

orbee had imagined it would be

he was trying to remember it was only a

game and

it didn't matter zach and his friends

pulled pretty straight and knocked down

a couple more pins

katie made a nice hit too when it was

orbee's turn

he was nervous what if he still didn't

hit

even one pin he knew his friends

wouldn't care but

orbee did he really cared a whole lot

as he picked up the ball katie called to

him and told him

she knew he'd be amazing orbee turned

and smiled at her

knowing that he wouldn't he looked down

the lane at the pin

in the middle then slowly he drew his

arm backwards

he didn't look away he swung his ball it

rolled off his hand

as he still concentrated on the middle

pin

and i have to tell you the ball

headed straight for the middle pin orbee

waited for it to curve off but the ball

kept going the friends stood up to see

the ball hit

right between the middle pin and the one

beside it and with a

thumbless crash all the pins fell over

every last one of them orbee was so

shocked he just stood and stared

katie raced up to him and hugged him she

shouted

strike and everybody cheered penny told

orbee that he hadn't even needed the

gutter buffers

his ball went straight down the middle

that day orbee learned a really

interesting thing

he learned that sometimes you have to do

something wrong a few times

before you can figure out how to do it

right he was

terribly proud of himself so were katie

and his friends

and if you had been there i'm sure you'd

have been very proud

too

did you know lots of animals are related

they come from the same family

the horse and zebra are cousins chickens

and turkeys are related too

squirrels and chipmunks groundhogs and

prairie dogs

just guess whose family this big old

hippo is a part of

[Music]

it had been a day of running around

katie found out that if you play

badminton

there's a whole lot of chasing the

birdie before you get to hit it back

orbee learned that if you let giant

bubbles go they tumble and turn in the

air

and they both discovered that a

butterfly stops on a whole lot of

flowers

before it flies away

[Music]

it was late afternoon and katie and

orbee were practicing

roller skating on the walkway

orbee felt a little something in his

tummy that told him he needed to eat a

snack

he tooted to katie that he'd be right

back and he hopped all the way inside

the house

mom was downstairs in the workshop

looking for picture hooks

orbee decided to help himself

he pulled out the cut carrots from the

fridge and took one out

he munched on it but he decided that the

crunchy carrot stick wasn't exactly what

he felt like

he put the half-eaten carrot on the

table and looked around for something

else

in the fruit bowl there were some

delicious looking dark red apples orbee

grabbed one and licked his lips this was

going to be

just perfect he stood up in the stepping

stool and washed the apple off in the

sink when it was all clean

he dried it and took a big bite

now i know it's strange but after

three bites orbeez tummy told him that

an apple wasn't quite what he wanted he

placed the apple on the kitchen table

beside the carrot

orbee looked around the kitchen

scratched his head

his tummy wanted something but he just

didn't know

what that something was

[Music]

orbee climbed up on the counter with his

sticky fingers and rifled through the

cupboard

he pulled out a cherry granola bar

hmm he burbled as he jumped down

the cherry granola bar looked just

perfect

orbee ripped open the package and took a

great big bite

as he chewed he thought yes this

is exactly what my tummy wants but i

have to tell you that

after the next bite

his tummy didn't want it anymore granola

was good but

he wanted something else he put it on

the table beside the carrot

and the half-eaten apple orbi pulled

open the fridge door

there in the cheese drawer were some

yummy looking cheese sticks

orbee grim this was positively

absolutely what his tummy wanted and he

pulled one out

as he bit into the cheese stick it felt

good

and squishy on his teeth it was fresh

cheese and the best he'd ever tasted

until the second bite

and i know it's really hard to believe

but

on the second bite orbee decided he

didn't

really want cheese either he put the

cheese stick on the table

beside the half-eaten carrot apple and

granola bar

now as orbee had a bite of each thing

his fussy tummy was in fact filling up

so when he saw

a gigantic bubble floating by the window

he decided he'd rather go outside and

bubble chase than be inside

trying to find something to eat

katie walked into the kitchen at that

time and noticed all the food on the

table and she asked orbee

what he was doing he explained that he

just couldn't find what he felt like

katie told him that nibbly on all that

food and leaving it

unfinished was wasting

orbee looked down at the ground he felt

bad that katie

was disappointed in him

at that moment mom walked in and asked

what was up

[Music]

orbee explained and mom pulled out a

plastic bag

she picked up his nibbled on food and

put it in the bag

she told orbee she'd save it all in the

fridge until another

time when he felt more like it then she

kissed the top of orbeez head and told

him

they were having orbits for supper

orbits

were his most favorite food orbee smiled

but i have to tell you that was

still not what his tummy wanted

just as orbee was heading out to play

bubbles dad called for someone to open

the door

or he wondered why dad couldn't open it

himself

and he turned the knob dad was standing

there holding some big brown

paper bags and four big flowers

dad thanked orbee for opening the door

as he hurried to the kitchen table

mom was stirring the pot and looking

around orbee

overheard that dad had bought a

delicious dessert

[Music]

orbee imagined a pie stuffed with

blueberries or

a huge box of ginger cookies or maybe

even a gargantuan chocolate cake now

that

was exactly what his tummy felt like

but when he got to the kitchen table dad

was handing out

leis they were long brightly colored

necklaces

dad announced that tonight was hawaiian

night and they were having a luau

then he gave everyone a big flower to

stick behind their ears

dad gave orbee one with a little

headband

although he loved his hawaiian

decorations orbee couldn't keep his eyes

off the bag

he couldn't wait to see the great big

hawaiian

cake that dad was going to pull out but

orbeez

got a big surprise it wasn't a

cake at all when dad reached into the

bag he pulled out

a big fat pineapple a watermelon

some mangoes guava passion fruit

and a coconut orbee was a little upset

he finally knew what he had been wanting

all day

it was cake now all there was on the

table was fruit

and some weird looking fruit at that

dad told katie and orbee that before

they could even cut the fruit and put it

together in a fruit bowl

they had to do a hula dance all the way

around the table

dad grabbed mom as he danced by and they

did a very

silly hula around the table and laughed

all the way

then they told katie and orbee it was

their turn and they did a very crazy

dance too

dad said finally he was in the mood to

make the fruit salad

katie and orbee helped by washing their

hands and being fruit loaders

every time something was ready to go

into the great big fruit bowl

they scooped it up and put it in

supper was delicious and when dessert

came orbee had completely forgotten

about the chocolate cake his tummy was

finally happy

he thought the hawaiian fruit salad was

so good

he got up and danced another hula dance

to show it

everybody danced the hula when supper

was over it had been

great fun and i happened to know that if

you had been there

you would have guessed the hula with

katie and orbee too
