it had been a day of hurrying

katie found out that when you try to

help dad gather up his work things

you better tell him what you have or

he'll waste time looking for it

orbee learned that clocks don't run

forever

and they both found out that it was very

important to get to the office on time

between munches of his toast as he

whirled out the front door

dad told katie and orbee his alarm clock

had stopped working they would have to

go to the clock shop for a new one after

work

now katie and orbee who just loved

adventures weren't actually keen on this

one

a clock shop didn't sound very exciting

they played hall bowling help mom cut

cookies

finger painted the patio stones and

passed the day doing all kinds of great

things

in fact the day disappeared in a minute

it was so much fun

[Music]

when dad opened the door he was eager to

get to the clock shop

so he wouldn't have another late morning

katie and orbee walked hand in hand with

dad they told him

hall bowling was hard they had to

rearrange the pins in a straight line to

hit them

dad smiled or beside in fact he wished

he would

haul bowling right now dad noticed that

orbee wasn't too excited about clock

shopping

orbee burbled it was just that a clock

was a clock and

he really wished they were doing well

almost

anything else dad asked orbee how he

knew it wouldn't be fun

he'd never been to a clock shop before

katie leaned around dead and looked at

orbee

he shrugged at her he had no idea what

could be fun

about it dad pointed to a building there

was a

tiny clock shop tucked away at the back

[Music]

dad opened the small door leading into

the shop

the two friends walked in looking around

katie knew

this would be fun but orbee was hoping

that it wouldn't take very long at that

moment

he didn't even notice that the whole

place was ticking just then a clerk

asked if she could help them as dad

began to explain

orbee looked up and burbled that if

clocks were just clocks

there sure were a whole lot of different

kinds

he could hardly believe his eyes and

then he could hardly believe his

ears when the clock on the counter

announced

it is 4 30 pm

katie gawked at orbee in disbelief

it was a talking clock while dad looked

at alarm clocks

the clerk told orbee this was for

someone who couldn't see

the person only needed to touch the

clock and it would tell the time

katie and orbee were very impressed

above it a little twirling ballerina

came out of a wall clock

that chimed musical notes katie pointed

it out for orbee and he liked it too

and and spun like the bella

dad placed a hand on his shoulder to

remind him it was a place

full of precious things or be smiled at

the clerk

next he noticed a clock with a man

chopping wood

as he went around it chimed as he

chopped

orbee pretended to chop too the clerk

smiled it was fine with her

if he moved around in the open area or

we checked with dad who nodded

he was holding up a red alarm clock and

considering it

now right behind orbee a clock went

cuckoo

cuckoo four times a little bird popped

its head out with each cooker

orbee loved it and made cuckoo sounds

and crazy faces

all around the open space

the clerk laughed out loud orbee burbled

a question

what was hanging down from the cuckoo

clock the clerk told him it was the

clock mechanism

she invited the friends over to see how

some clocks work

she brought out a special wall clock

that she used

to show the working mechanism it was

actually just the inside of the clock

without the casing

the casing was the pretty part that goes

on the outside of the clock

the clerk asked orbee to pull the chain

gently

and as he did the friends saw the gears

click

and turn and she explained that the

chain was winding up the clock

the gears turned katie loved how small

the clock parts were

the clerk told her that they were even

smaller in a watch of course

she opened up a watch and showed them

the teeny tiny gears inside

nowadays most watches and clocks ran on

batteries she explained but

in the old days people wound the clocks

with the key

or with the chains many customers

loved the old wind-up kind so she still

had some in the store

orbee found himself moving back and

forth as he listened to the clocks

he realized he was moving to the

tick-tock

ticking of the clocks the clock shop had

its own rhythm

the clerk said she'd show them some of

her favorite plots

like old noisy over there

he would chime the hour before katie and

orbee had time to turn

old noisy chimed a loud every time and

they jumped at the sound

the clerk asked them to count the chimes

or be kind of

swung back and forth like the pendulum

and old noisy

as they counted and it chimed four

more times the clerk said

now they knew what time it was it was

five o'clock telling the time made katie

and orbee feel

very proud the clerk told them only one

clock in the shop

told the real time orbeez snorkeled

why she explained that

if every clock in the place went off at

the same time

it would be frightfully loud this way

she could enjoy

each one she pointed to a clock above

her it was her most favorite

just then beautiful music called swan

lake played

and seven swans glided around the clock

katie thought it was one of the most

beautiful clocks that she had ever seen

dad purchased a new alarm clock orbee

was glad it wasn't all noisy

they thanked the clerk for showing them

everything she pointed to a jazzy

looking clock on the wall

and she wondered if aubry wouldn't like

to hear this one before he went

the little door opened up and out came a

tiny mechanical man

with a trumpet who tooted the hour

he tooted five times orbee immediately

mimed

playing a trumpet and waved thank you to

the lady

all the way home they did the tick-tock

dance

throwing in swan gliding trumpet playing

cuckoo calling of everything else he

could think of

katie and orbee were delighted to have

discovered that even though the clock

shop sounded boring at first

it was far from it they never forgot

that

and i hope that when you have to do

something that seems a little dull

you'll remember the fun katie and orbee

had look for the fun

in everything you do

[Music]

a sloth takes time and a cheetah likes

to go

but even if you're fast and you think

you'll win the race

long as you do your best

it had been a day of doing

katie learned that if you put your

summer clothes away there will be room

in your dresser drawers

for all of your winter things or we

found out that when you go through the

toy box

you discover a whole lot of old toys

that you're now too old for

and they both discovered that katie was

growing for sure as the sleeves of her

old winter sweater

were way too short

mom announced that katie and orbee's

chores were done but she and dad

had some other projects to do

when katie and orbee were left alone in

the room they realized they wanted to

help with the other projects too

and hurry down the stairs mom and dad

were busy putting on a new front door

handle

katie and orbee said that they wanted to

help

but i have to say there wasn't anything

they could do

dad kept moving from one side of the

door to the other

and the two friends were getting a bit

underfoot

the mom finally suggested that they work

on a project of their own

katie and orbee loved the idea but they

couldn't think of any project ideas

bed had just discovered he'd installed

the whole handle upside down

as mom suggested the project should be

up in their room maybe they could

each decorate one of the bedroom walls

katie and obi were thrilled with that

and in a second

neither of them was anywhere to be seen

in the bedroom orbee chose his closet

wall and katie chose the wall by her bed

next they had to think of something to

do with it

katie as usual pulled out her drawing

materials

and with a grin set right to work

she had a wonderful idea

orbee on the other hand walked back and

forth

in front of the wall hoping the wall

would help him think of what to do

and i have to tell you that all of a

sudden

a kicking of heels and a spin of joy

he had an idea as katie drew furiously

orbee hurried downstairs at first he

asked mom and dad for

permission to use certain things then he

scurried into the kitchen

there he pulled out the tin foil and

masking tape from a drawer

then from the recycling bin he pulled

out an old cardboard box and

six plastic juice bottles with wide

bottoms and narrow tops

he stuffed everything into the empty box

and pushed it along the floor

for stairs as mum watched to make sure

he was safe

orbee bumped the box all the way up to

the top

then he dragged it right into katie's

room

katie looked up to see what he had in

his box

she asked orbee what he was going to do

on his wall

he looked at her with a big smile and

bubble said

[Music]

he had decided to surprise her

he told katie that he knew what she was

doing and she smiled a big smile right

back at him

maybe he did and maybe he didn't

zobby pulled everything out of the box

he burbled that of course he knew what

she was doing because

he could see she was making a whole lot

of drawings

katie smiled because it was true but

then she chuckled that he didn't

actually know what all the drawings were

about

with the giggles she covered up her

drawing pile with a blank piece of paper

and hid them from orbeez

[Music]

as katie worked orbee giggled too it was

fun making something that would surprise

the other person

he drew some shapes on the cardboard box

and taped the plastic bottles together

in three

dad poked his head in and orbee asked

him

if he could cut the shapes out of the

cardboard for him

dad was glad to help because cutting

cardboard was hard

then orbee painted his cardboard pieces

and started taping them to the wall

katie was still drawing and looked up

the first piece orbee put up was

rectangular in shape

and it went up beside the closet door

frame he put another one the very same

on the other side

katie turned back to her work thinking

hard before she set

pencil to paper as orbee got off the

wall from taping the next two pieces

he looked over at katie and noticed that

whatever

she was drawing she was sure doing a lot

of it

her drawing pile was growing it was very

curious

katie giggled she thought of something

else

and pulled out a new sheet of paper

orbee stuck the two clumps of tape

plastic bottles at the bottom on the

floor

he covered them with the foil and

carefully squashed it around the shape

of the bottle

just before supper orbee asked dad to

help him with his last piece

and katie asked mum to do some taping

that was too high for her to reach

mom loved what katie had done and dad

loved what orbee had done

but no one was allowed to peek at the

other side of the room until they were

all finished at last they were

and on the count of three

both teams turned around and saw the

others work

orbee had created a moon rocket entrance

to his closet

it had a shiny silver tip above the door

and

windows on each side the juice bottles

at the bottom were the rocket boosters

katie clapped her hands in amazement

then orbee looked up and saw what katie

had been drawing

he just stood and stared it took a while

to

absorb it all katie had drawn

every single person she could think of

that she

loved and adored mom had arranged them

according to family and friends

and it was amazing simply amazing

dancehead because you could tell

who everybody was everybody named the

pictures

and laughed after how silly some of them

looked and

katie was tickled pink which meant she

was so happy

that everybody liked him dad told katie

that she had created her own rogues

gallery

and explained that it meant she had made

her wall into a gallery of portraits

portraits were pictures of people's

faces in the rogues gallery the people

were rascals and scallywags

katie's gallery was much nicer he said

because it has pictures of friends and

family

dad was delighted to be included in it

[Music]

that night orbee slept in the moon

rocket and dreamt of traveling through

space

katie slept under her rogues gallery

and dreamt of all the people that she

loved

in the whole world and i'm not sure

but i think she may even have dreamt

of you too

[Music]

flamingos are pink and that's because

they eat plenty of shrimps

which are also pink in fact

that's almost all they eat just imagine

turning purple

after eating lots and lots of grapes or

even orange i'm

eating carrots

it had been a day of playing with the

wind

he learned that the leaves and the trees

can tell you it was going to be windy

outside

orbee found out that it's hard to play

goldfish with cards in the front steps

on a windy day and they both discovered

that when the wind takes your beach ball

it doesn't always want to give it back

[Music]

that afternoon mom katie and orbee went

grocery shopping

the two friends had all kinds of fun

hunting for different things on mom's

list

but it was as they were pushing their

cart out of the store that katie noticed

something on the wall

it was a big colorful sign with some

words and a drawing of summer fun

she pointed it out to mom who read it

aloud

there was to be a contest a drawing

contest

katie grinden looked at mom her eyes as

big as saucers

orbee burbled what kind of contest

and mom explained that it was to be a

drawing of your favorite thing to do

in the summer you can just imagine me

jumping up and down teddy and orbeez

really wanted to enter

mom agreed that they could they were

cheers coming from

either side of the shopping cart as they

headed for the car

at home katie and orbee sifted through

their art supplies finding the

best paper crayons colored pencils and

markers and soon they set to work

now the minute katie heard about the

contest she knew

exactly what she would draw her most

favorite thing to do in the summer

was wave riding at the cottage on their

blow-up seahorse

she pulled out a big sheet of paper and

began to draw

orbee on the other hand chose a small

piece of paper

that way there wouldn't be too much room

for mistakes

orbee picked up his pencil he adored

having water balloon fights up at the

cottage

that surely was his favorite thing and

as he began to draw a water balloon

he thought about molding clay sculptures

out in the sun he loved that too

and would add it to his water balloon

picture

clearly he needed a bigger piece of

paper

he pulled one out he pressed his pencil

to the paper to start drawing a lump

of clay suddenly

idea overload or be remembered how much

fun it was to go boat riding

three things he didn't know how to get

all the pictures on

one page he burbled to katie

that he'd be right back dad was outside

getting the barbecue ready

orbee asked dad if he could send two

pages taped together into a contest

dad couldn't see why not orbee leapt up

in the air and shouted

he'd better get going in a pink blur

orbee was gone and as he was running

through the kitchen

he realized he was going to need some

tape

at that moment mom came in from

gathering the mail

orbee burbled how much he loved staying

up late to watch the august meteor

showers through the telescope

she gave orbee a big hug she was

delighted he was having so much fun with

the contest

and he was but as it happened

over the next two days orbee didn't draw

a thing

he tried and tried but each time he

started drawing his ideas

a new idea would pop into his head like

bike riding with streamers or roller

skating holding on to dad's long coat

the list just went on and on

meanwhile katie had finished her drawing

and was very pleased with it

except that the seahorse

did look a little like a hippopotamus

she

tried to fix it a few times but she

wasn't having much luck

mom dad and orbeez all thought it looked

great but i have to tell you that kitty

wasn't fully happy with it

on the day the contest closed which

meant the last day you bring in your

pictures

orbeez sat out on the front step

he taped 12 pieces of paper together and

held the huge tumbling mess of them in

his hand once he had started drawing

again he couldn't stop because

the new ideas just kept coming to him

yi ping bopped up the walk to show off

her new shoes orbee liked them and yi

ping noticed all the paper

orbee explained about his overflow of

ideas

and how he had to tape all the drawings

together because he couldn't just pick

one for the contest

he ping could see that orbee had a

problem

she sat down beside him and wiggled her

new shoes

she told orbee it sounded like he needed

a huge piece of paper

like one from katie's roll of painting

paper

that way he could start with one idea

and move on to another

orbeez sat up straight and then he

reached out and

gave yee ping a great big thank you

smooch and the cheek

she had solved his problem

as katie rubbed out the seahorse for the

fourth time

a sad thing happened the paper ripped

and her drawing was ruined katie was

heartbroken

orbee raced in and pulled out the long

newsprint roll

he placed a huge piece of it across the

wooden floor

and he looked at it it was going to be

hard

but he could do it when he explained the

idea to katie she smiled

it was great orbee nodded but verbal

there was only one problem

with a whole lot of drawing for one

person

at that moment orbee noticed katie's

torn drawing

he kindly invited her to help him

katie who was pretty upset looked up

it would be great fun to do this huge

drawing together

and enter the contest as a team

she grabbed her pencil and they planned

their drawing carefully and katie was a

huge help

at deciding where they should put things

the two friends drew furiously all

afternoon

a picture was loaded with all kinds of

great things to do in the summer

including sea horse riding mom wrote on

the entry note that it was called

my favorite thing is everything

and i have to tell you that three weeks

later

katie and orbee were very thrilled to

discover

their great big picture posted up on the

grocery store board

with a first prize ribbon on it

there was no question about it everyone

even the judges agreed with orbee

that everything was fun in the summer

they loved that the friends had put so

many ideas on the page

and i just bet that if you'd been one of

the judges

you would have chosen their picture too

after all summer is a terrific

time of year

you
