06x08 - Garden Fairies / Ice Dance / Stones

it had been a day of gardening

katie found out that when you dig in the

soil worms try to hurry away

orbee learned that even though the birds

don't like it

chance loves to play tag with them

and they both discovered flowers catch

dewdrops

on their pedals

charisse was staying over at katie and

orbee's house for a visit

the whole family and their wonderful

guests were helping mom in the garden

dad was mowing the lawn when mom came to

a beautiful plant with white petals and

yellow centers

she explained that they were daisies

the daisies were growing so fast they

were crowding out some of the other

flowers in the garden

she picked up her garden scissors and

clipped some of them back

with delight she told the friends that

they would make daisy change with the

flowers

nobody knew exactly what daisy chains

were but as mum picked up

all the cut daisies and headed for the

big lawn chair

they followed eager to find out

dad turned the lawnmower on told them he

was thirsty and would bring

everybody some cranberry apple juice

sitting on the lawn chair mom threaded

one daisy stem through another and soon

created a chain mom placed katie's and

charissa's

finished daisy circlets on their heads

the two girls looked at each other

admiring the ring of daisies

they looked like fairy flower crowns

mom made a longer one for orbee and hung

it around his neck

he looked fabulous

as they drank their juice cherise katie

and orbee

all felt very magical with their daisy

chains on

the little twinkle in katie's eye

sparkled as she asked her friends

if they felt like a game of garden

fairies and i guess you know that both

friends did

with a leap katie was up and off the

lawn chair and she disappeared into the

house

daisies and all when she raced out the

back door again

she was holding three beautiful filmy

sparkly sets of wings

with golden ribbon ties

with the wings they would look like real

fairies mom and dad

tied the wings on each friend cherise

had to sit forward a bit but mom

flattened the wings so that they stuck

out on each side of her and she could

sit back

katie thought charisse looked like a

fairy queen and

that's how the game got started

[Music]

they all decided that fairy queens eures

was very lonely

she lived in her castle with no one to

play with

he was a very magical fairy queen and to

keep the magic in her kingdom

she had to sit on her throne all day if

she

left the throne the magic of the kingdom

would disappear the throne sat on top of

a fairy hill

and the queen looked out over her

beautiful land

[Music]

fairy katy suggested that the queen

watch katie and orbee play a fairy game

the queen looked at the fairy game with

great curiosity

she'd never played one herself she

called out to

azkaban but the two fairies were shy and

ran away and hid

orbee burbled too fairy katy in a loud

voice that

he really wanted to meet and play with

the queen but

he thought she was too important sitting

on her throne all day doing

queen thing when the queen saw the

others run away

he sighed a great sigh and began to sob

pretend tears because she was very

lonely

katie giggled because she thought

charisse was funny

too but she tried not to and to cheer

herself

up the queen announced that she would

now sing an

exquisite fairy song

her beautiful voice spread out over the

fairy kingdom

the song and the queen's voice were so

magical

that the two fairies came out of hiding

and danced a wild

magical dance orbee grabbed katie and

whirled her around and then left and

kicked up his feet

queen charisse clapped with glee when

the dance was finished and then beckoned

the two fairies over

well orbee pretended to be really afraid

he shook his knees so much that

katie fell over laughing

green cherise told the others that she

loved their dancing but

it made her sad because she wasn't

allowed to dance herself

she had to sit in her throne all day and

was not allowed to get up

orbee tooted to the queen

that he knew she couldn't get off the

throne

but he also knew she could dance

the queen wondered what orbee meant he

burbled that

all it took was a little fairy magic

[Music]

with that orbee did a crazy belly dance

and shook one foot and the other

wiggled as he bumped closer to the fairy

queen

he spun three times in verbal thick

snuggly big sniggly

boop bop-de-doo

as he said it he flipped off charisse's

wheelchair break

and spun her around in a circle and

right into the magical daisy dance

charisse squealed with laughter so she

was dancing herself and

singing at the same time

[Music]

at the end of the dance orbee jiggled

over to the table and picked up

charissa's glass of juice

he knelt down in front of her you'd do

that with queens

and he presented the drink to her from

behind his back

he pulled out a beautiful bouquet of

daisies

and laid them in her lap katie brought

the other juices over and

cherise picked up a daisy

tap each drink and declared it a magical

daisy drink

they clink glasses like mom and dad did

some time

and together declared that they would

always be friends

next they raised the glasses up high

then took a sip

orbee pretended that the drink was so

magical

he melted to the ground then did a

flip-up

katie and cherise by now had tummy pain

from so much laughing

kenny announced that the day was

possibly the silliest day

ever the queen will always be able to

laugh at fairy orbee

when she remembered it charisse nodded

it was true

and do you know that to this very day

all three friends remember the magical

garden fairies

and the ridiculous fairy dance

it still makes little tears come out of

cherise's eyes when she thinks of it

[Music]

and i hope that you collect all kinds of

daisy days and daisy friends

so you can remember them when you grow

up they may just make you laugh

too just like charisse

to katie and orbee

[Music]

all you need to make a hand puppet is a

small paper bag

and some crayons take the bag like this

draw eyes a nose and maybe some hair

lift a little flap draw them out put

your hand in

and you've got a puppet that may even

look like your best friend

[Music]

it had been a day of freshly fallen snow

katie found out that if your scarf isn't

tucked into your jacket

it's easy to get snow down your back

orbee learned that animals make all

kinds of tracks from the snow

and they both discovered that you can

make pretty patterns with your own

footprints

[Music]

it was a perfect winter day that

afternoon dad called out that if anyone

was up for an adventure

he was going to go skating on the canal

within two seconds katie was

tugging on her snow pants and orbee was

clapping on his earmuffs

[Music]

in the car dad explained that the canal

was built for boats in the summer but in

the winter it froze and

made the world's longest skating rink

at the skating shack mom and dad helped

their friends put on their skates

when orbee stepped onto the ice one foot

went forward and one went backward and

when he pulled him together

he spun in a circle and he grabbed dad

to steady himself

his legs went in and out sort of

jelly-like until

dad finally lifted orbee up into the air

and then lowered him slowly giving him

time to get his balance

[Music]

katie spun in a little circle to her

delight it looked like a ballet

dance katie giggled because truly she

had no idea

how she had just done it and orbee was

impressed

it was there and then that katie and

orbee remembered

the skaters on tv the ones that danced

on the ice

the friends skated side by side ahead of

mom and dad

katie began to imagine that she was on a

big

rink ice dancing in front of a large

crowd

she stuck his shaky leg out and raised

her arms in the air

gracefully orbee worked up a little

speed and

did a little jump on the ice mom called

to him to be careful

katie told him that he was good at that

orbee now imagined that he was dressed

in a glittery suit and flashy skates

just then a couple went by arm and arm

and swaying from side to side

they skated on the same foot so they

looked like one body moving gracefully

down the ice

the two friends looked at each other

this looked like something that you

should know how to do

if you're going to be an ice dancer

orbee tried to

switch feet to match katie's but he

tripped

and he lost his balance and went

spinning

in circles like a pinwheel across the

ice

when he spun to a stop people skated by

katie was ahead and hadn't noticed that

he'd fallen

so mom followed her as dad whizzed along

and scooped orbee

up in his arm he asked before he was all

right

barbie smiled he was just a little dizzy

slowly dad set him down again as a man

on long bladed skates passed by the man

was bent over swaying from side to side

as he skated

one arm swinging out beside him as he

moved

orbee was quite intrigued dad explained

that the man was a speed

skater and could go extremely fast

that gave orbee an idea he could see

kitty in the distance and he needed to

catch up

so he bent over and swung his arm and

slid his skates out from

side to side like the speed skating man

slowly he began to get the hang of it

dad mentioned how fast he was going in

orbee beam

he imagined his glittery suit gleaming

as he pushed

harder and harder on the skates

suddenly he found himself passing katie

and mama

and why though he did he simply couldn't

stop

dad shot past mum after orbeez was

leaning back and trying to make his feet

stop

dad caught him from behind and held him

almost like a wheelbarrow

[Applause]

all together again the friends counted

to three and then

took off on the same foot mom and dad

clapped

barbie felt so confident he grabbed

katie's hand and together they started

to look a little like the

couples that they'd seen ice dancing on

tv

katie told robbie to put his hand up in

the air as she did

mom said they were amazing and it was at

that precise moment

that orbee forgot that he really wasn't

a figure skater

in his mind he could hear the crowd

cheering so he pulled on katie's arm and

spun her around for him she was

astonished

[Music]

now of course they couldn't dance on ice

it's a very difficult thing to do

so they both lost their balance and went

thundering down orbee landed on top of

katie but luckily

her big winter jacket and her thick hat

kept her from getting hurt

the two of them slid on the ice for a

moment before a surprised mom and dad

caught them

orbee was shocked he'd been so lost in

his imagination

that he forgot he really didn't know how

to ice dance

mom pointed to a log and she and dad

guided katie and orbee over to her

on the log katie asked what had happened

or be meekly burbled that he thought he

was one of those

ice dancers that he'd seen on tv

her mom went and bought some hot

chocolate as dad explained that the

people on tv

take lessons for years and years and

that they start with one

small move and they work their way up to

a full dance

when mom came back orbee could barely

sip his drink

he realized that he'd gotten carried

away

he apologized to katie who smiled and

said that she'd been imagining too

anyway she hadn't hurt herself though he

turned to look at his best friend

and if it wasn't for the large dollop of

cream on the end of her nose

he might have cried katie pretended that

she didn't know it was there

and orbee started to giggle

then chuckle and soon he was laughing so

hard

dad had to hold his hot chocolate

mom asked if the two friends wanted to

take figure skating classes

and they both cheered yes yay yay

mom said she would look into it and then

as orbeez sipped his drink

she asked if perhaps he could wait to

try the fancy stuff until he was older

and

knew how it was done orbee agreed that

he would

katie said it must be more fun to do it

the right way than the wrong way

and or be agreed

they skated the rest of the afternoon

practicing their

circles and glides and having a lot of

fun

when they finally took lessons they

became quite good at ice dancing

and i know if you had been there to see

them you'd have thought so too

[Music]

there are lots of different ways of

telling time long long ago

they used water clocks and hourglasses

this is a sundial it works with shadows

and light from the sun here's a

wristwatch and a digital alarm clock

wouldn't it be neat to have an hourglass

wristwatch

[Music]

it had been a day of

cottage fun katie discovered that

painted turtles

aren't painted on the top they're

painted on the bottom

or we found out that fish really like to

have a look at your toes when you put

them underwater and they both learned

that

all kinds of creatures live under the

large

flat stones they found along the

shoreline

[Music]

at breakfast dad flexed his muscles they

chuckled and

asked katie and orbee if they felt like

doing a little muscle work that day

or being grinned and flexed his muscles

katie did too

muscle work sounded like fun

mom's cottage garden was full of stones

so

the flowers were having a difficult time

growing there

dad pointed out that today's job would

be to carry the rocks and stones he dug

out of mom's garden

and place them in the wheelbarrow he

raised a finger to caution them

but they must only lift what they could

if a rock was too heavy

they were to leave it for dad

orbee was sure that no rock would be too

heavy for him

as he waited for the first one to be

popped out

when aguassi picked it up easily and

slaughtered over to the wheelbarrow

carrying it like a steam shovel katie

was very impressed the next rock was

katie's then

she picked it up just as orbee had and

headed over to the wheelbarrow

but on the way to the wheelbarrow katie

noticed a white sparkly streak through

the middle of the stone

and thought how very pretty it was

as she dropped it into the wheelbarrow

with a thud she thought about the fact

that

it was only a rock and yet it was nice

to look at

on her way back for her next one orbee

impressed her by carrying his rock on

his shoulder

pretending he was a real he-man katy

giggle

dad scooped under and flipped out a

rather large flat rock

it was black in color and quite smooth

orbee raced back for another stone as

katie picked up the flat rock

it was big but not too heavy she looked

at it

and had an idea

on the ground katie hunted for the right

surface behind the wheel barrel she

found the perfect place

for her big flat rock she laid it down

and nestled it in the grass

as orbee who pretended he was a big

monster

dumped another rock in with a growl

katie looked at the ones that were

collecting in the wheelbarrow

she pulled out her first rock and took

another look at it

and then she noticed that all of the

rocks had

something pretty about them she set her

first rock down

on the flat one looked nice but it

needed something else to go with it

he glanced into the wheelbarrow another

stone was white with the black streak

through it

interesting she placed it with her

others

as she admired her arrangement orbee who

was carrying the

next like an elephant wood in his trunk

plunked another roll

into the real round it was not that

pretty in color but

it had a nice shape katie lifted it out

and placed it

on top of the others in her pile the

shape was becoming

very interesting orbee pretended to be a

bulldozer

help dad tug on a difficult stone katie

lifted more

and more rocks out of the wheelbarrow

and organized them on her stone

sculpture

she was careful to balance them the

design of the statue became quite

intriguing as it grew and grew

when dad and orbee were finally

successful at yanking out the stubborn

stone

or be hauled into the wheelbarrow

now i have to tell you that orbee was

actually getting a little pooped

that's why when he dumped a stone into

the wheelbarrow

he was very surprised to see it was

almost

empty he looked around where had all the

others gone

then he noticed katie's blonde air on

the far side of the wheelbarrow

well as you can imagine orbee was very

upset that

as quickly as he was putting the rocks

where they were supposed to go

katie was taking him out as a matter of

fact

he was so upset that he he tilted a

caving in an angry voice

katie looked up in shock

or be too good to katie that it was not

fair for her to undo his hard work

mom and dad hurried over to see what the

fuss was about

they rounded the wheelbarrow with orbee

and toe

when they got to the other side of it

everyone was very surprised to see

katie's stone sculpture even orbee who

walked around the sculpture

looking at it from all sides agreed it

was

beautiful it was so beautiful

that orbee knew the most perfect thing

to top it all off

he took a pink rock from the wheelbarrow

and placed it on a small

flat rock everybody clapped because it

did look perfect there

orbee apologized to his best friend

and they hugged it dad had a puzzled

look on his face because

as lovely as the sculpture was it wasn't

in a very good place

they wouldn't be able to play badminton

around it

katie realized that dad was right she

hadn't thought about where it was placed

she had just thought about making it

that was when mom smiled why not place

the stones

in the garden so they can become garden

art

katie clapped she loved the idea

of garden art so much

mom showed them how to separate it all

out

on the grass as if the sculpture was

lying on its side

and then build it up in a perfect place

in the garden

it looked terrific

[Music]

dad said that rocks piled in the shape

of art sculptures

are called cairns in the north people

stack stones in the shape of humans

and call them inukshuks

katie's cairn decorated the flowers

joyfully

when the ground was finally ready for

mom to plant her flowers that day

they had collected another pile of

stones

everybody used the stones to make their

own cairns in special places around the

cottage

and when they were done the wheelbarrow

was empty

as dad clapped his dusty hands he said

that reusing the rocks was

natural recycling

every now and then they change the

garden heart to a new shape

and even to this very day the stones are

still there

if you ever help with the garden and

find some stones

perhaps you too can make a special stone

sculpture

just like katie and orbee did if you do

i know it will decorate your garden

just beautifully
