- lost in the storm quick get the diary

and see if it can give us a fix on somewhere anywhere the voyage north continued fair I felt

we would make homeport without incident but such was not the case outer scope is flying again but with only three riders

Woolley and Henry got left behind in the dump and now the ship is caught in a big storm my point that's what we're head

first hey storm right away all avoid

parish save myself I floated ashore draped across a broken Mouse the gold chain and medallions still around my neck I knew

it I knew the medallion was safe you knew what boy I sure hope cutting this fuel system will bring us down too fast

oh brother that's all we need I know we shouldn't have taken the ship up it'll be a miracle if we're not k*lled

the middle of a desert without any water okay then let's get going we have to find water and we have to find that

the story of the Chinese railroad strengthened Sierra Nevada 1867 what's

happening

workers on the railroad are calling the strike what's a strike we stopped work to get

equal pay you could work in hours and you could benefit hours in pay equal to

home the railroad pays the white workers more money they work fewer hours and

they get more benefits the Chinese workers think it is unfair and we want

to strike there's a meeting tonight to put the strike into effect are you going

to come I don't know it is difficult to

strike one sacrifice as many things when one strikes for example we won't get paid there's a

lot injuring both sides that can be dangerous help me bring the basket down

this job is dangerous enough without getting involved in strikes I believe you what do you use this

basket for we have to plan dynamite into the side of the mountains hanging in a

basket like this one the Chinese are the only ones who would do it and you shouldn't go on strike

there's a meeting tonight of our community leaders to discuss the strike you should at least go to the

strike meeting maybe you're right men are dying from overwork low wages

and no benefits we must strike for equal rights but if we strike we will have no

pay and no money to send to our families in China if conditions continue as they

are your families will never see you again if we strike we will all starve

here we cannot be any hungrier than we are now besides there are Asian businesses

in the town that can help us we've carved roads through bedrock work

through freezing cold winters and many of our friends have died in avalanches

the bosses know we have very little money and cannot last very long without

work but their deadline is greater than our need

men if we don't strike our bodies will top the entire length of this railroad

who's around here spying on us man we should follow him let's go if we stick

together and strike there'll be no one to build their railroad we must strike

for our families we must strike for our respect men we must strike we must

strike to stay alive right must strike

they're really gonna do it let me get this straight the Chinese workers are

going on strike they are really going on strike I am sick and tired of those

people you know you know what just means don't you if they're gonna strike I'm

gonna have to give in a little get them back to work otherwise I'll never make my deadline what's that hey hey

there was somebody listening oh we're gonna be in our world we must get the

information to the strikers if they know the boss is in trouble they can plan their next move we get out of this alive

then the railroads both psmith were agreed to your demands then although it

is a partial victory our working conditions will improve from now on [Applause]

after a united struggle the Chinese workers when half their demands from the railroad they got a raise in pay and

better apples although not a total victory the strike itself was one of the

first in the history of organized labor [Music]

what's prejudice prejudice comes from two words three and Judge pre means

before and judge means to make up your mind sometimes it's a necessary part of

life like judging when they're branch will hold you or not right prejudice

means making up your mind before knowing like deciding you hate asparagus even if

you have never tried it you know people who are not prejudiced have a better

chance to make new friends and discover new experiences hey what are they doing

movie with them I guess anyone can overcome prejudice if they really want

to it's a choice you can look at people and see that they're different shades of

color or have a different way of talking or live in a different neighborhood or

aren't really so different after all I like to see some real people

- Wendy's complaint Eleanor Edgar and Cynthia crashed in the

storm and found themselves on the beach there they met Wendy who thinks she can help them find the medallion thanks for

helping us with the ship Wendy that's okay it was fun does it really fly sure does that's how

we got here we don't have any transportation problems so wish could solve my problems at school we'll have

you tried talking to your teacher about it look Cynthia why should I it wouldn't make any difference come on let's go see

my grandmother you sure it'll be okay to visit her I mean she won't mind will she

I'm sure Edgar should be glad to tell us the story now that I read part of the

diary I really want to hear it again [Music]

you know Wendy a couple of years ago I had the same problem with the teacher I had the same thing well it was similar

he went much too fast for me really Spanish is really my first language so I'll be translating what he said from

English to Spanish and back again before I could answer you know a lot of extra steps I can see where that can be a

problem yeah it sure was and I wasn't the only one either and we were all

afraid to say anything so the teacher didn't know are you the only Native American in your class no are they as

upset as you are about the history lessons we're probably but they haven't said anything watch Ellen off that's

Wendy that's what I did and it helped what's he gonna do rewrite all their history books let's

face it it's not just my teacher it's the whole setup you may be right but

you've got to start somewhere and you might as well start with your teacher right listen I wasn't too sure we could

build a spaceship but we just started and one piece at a time little by little and with the five of us

working together we did it and it worked five of you where are the others

my little brother Henry and our friend Willie got left behind when we took off

we think they're using the map that goes with the diary to try to link up with us

at least I sure hope so [Music]

when we don't know much about some people all we have to go on is what we've heard now some of that could be

exaggerated or just plain wrong we may

not even understand the things we do know about them if you are afraid of new

ideas or just don't know you could get boxed up with a bad case of prejudice

we're going to learn how to make tostones today and the stories are fried

plantains and in spanish-speaking countries we call them Platanos can you say that what's the difference between

plans and bananas they almost look the same except that plantains are considerably larger how come they're so

brown ok these got a little brown because we put them on the hot water what we do first is that you let them

soak in the hot water for a while it makes it easier to peel I'll put a slash

in them and then you can peel it down when plantains start becoming very

yellow they get sweet and you cook them differently than the green ones

plantains are a staple food in countries in South America and Africa they look

different than any yujeong just peel a regular banana well because the skin sticks onto the plantain oh

yeah I can tell this was coming off they're coming off pretty good here after they peeled off we cut them in a

in an angle a diagonal cut well the reason is that it exposes more of the

plantain to cook okay always be careful when you're using the knives not too

thick this is called a French cut forget another pot and we soak them for about

15 minutes we put it in salt water when you do this you put around 2 tablespoons

now I'm just measuring by I do want stick your hands in if y'all sticky oh

yeah that's a SAP it's in the plantain and usually will stain your hand

and I'm gonna get the oil heated up now what you do is that you put enough oil

so that you cover the plantains at least halfway so that's like a good amount

like half an inch of oil in the in the pot now whenever you get to this part

make sure that you're always with some adult because when water hits that hot oil it's going to really splatter fry

them we cook them until they're golden yellow his confused isn't even flatten

that one out if you got to do is just flatten it out a little bit like a like

a hamburger patty what we're doing here is now is we're finishing cooking it

Tony's we can just put salt on it but we're in Puerto Rico we put a special

seasoning called Maho which is made out of garlic and vinegar and salt okay

try it yours out when you got the time there's a lot of fun and when you're

finished you can eat what you've done [Music]
