just after his mother died
in this house.

born in this house in 1902,

and then watched
his mother Olive suffer

and die here in 1934.

There have been
multiple reports,

including by Steinbeck himself,

of a disturbing
presence in the house,

which is now a
museum and restaurant.

I meet first with
Steinbeck House docent

Dale Bartoletti,

to talk about what Steinbec
might have seen lurking here

I'm kind of puzzled by
that quote that he wrote

of seeing things
walking in this house

that he should not see.

Usually, when you
say something like that,

you're talking about
some kind of spiritual entity

- or something.
- Mm-hmm.

point, we capture something strange

Watch as an unexplained

I just feel like him talking about
this very house and how haunted it is

and him seeing things walking in
this house that he should not see.

Did he see something in this
house that truly terrified him?

Something darker?

As long as I've
spent in this house,

and as much as I know
about John Steinbeck,

I can't answer that question.

The man's mind was so
different from anyone else's.

And that's why this
investigation is so mysterious,

interesting, and exhilarating.

[Dale] The only description
that I've ever read of something

that he saw was at the
time of his mother's death.

His mother died
here in the house.

She got ill, she was
taken to the hospital,

suffered a stroke, was
there for quite a while

and was finally sent home.

By that time, she was
half paralyzed, bedridden.

So, John and
his first wife Carol

move back into the house
just to help take care of her.

- Back into here?
- Yeah.

That was a very grim time,
she was just there to die.

During that time,
he was sitting outside

the room that she died in.

At one point, he
said that he saw

a translucent shaft of ligh

and appeared to be
looking down at her.

After she died, he and
his father were sitting

here in the living room,
and that shaft of light

came through the room,
turned, went into the dining room,

and then on to the kitchen.

- In this very room?
- In this very room.

And he actually wrote
that eyewitness account.

He did, he did.

That's pretty remarkable
that one of the most notable

and iconic authors in
American history would write

- a true account of a haunting.

when the building was
used as a boarding house

for young women,

a local newspaper
interviewe one occupant

who was awakened by a
simila unexplainable bright light

and another who
was terrifie by a 6' tall,

white-haired apparition.

Dale tells us that the
restaurant chef Augie Rodriguez

feels a presence here and
doesn't like to leave the kitchen area.

When I'm alone and if I
walk to any of these rooms,

I just feel the presence of
somebody right behind me.

A... And I can feel it really,
really, really, really bad.

And when it's very close to me,

even my skin is, like...
You know, pops like...

[Zak] Earlier, Dale told me
about a seven-year-old visit

who had an encounter with something
taking the shape of a little girl.

I had heard that story
several times from several of

the many volunteers
who work here.

He saw a figure, he describes
it as a girl in a blue mist.

me a particularly chilling deta

about the girl's face.

The eyes were pitch black.

where Zachary saw the blue figure

and find Dale doing
some office work.

- Is this the photo he was talking about?

Okay. And he was seeing
the figure above this picture.

And do you know what
room John Steinbeck's

- mother died in?

That's a pretty
eerie coincidence.

instantly things go off the rails.

Aaron is terrified
by a china cabinet.

irrationally angry about

a missing piece of equipment

[Aaron] I'm so [bleep] pissed.

Then I become strangely
focused on this do

and am overtaken
by anger myself.

- Billy? Billy? Billy?
- [man] He's downstairs.

- Well, get him upstairs.

What the [bleep]
is he doing, dude?

Sorry, I'm getting very
bothered right now,

I'm getting very agitated.

This house is haunted and it's
charged and it knows we're here.

[Zak] As we further
investigate this room,

I make a major discovery.

Whoa, whoa. Check this out.

I just realized
what you realized.

- It's, it's set up.

These mirrors are set
up as a psychomanteum,

which is when you
face two mirrors together

to create a loop and
this loop is believed

to be a portal where
spirits can enter through

as a doorway into our world.

It's an infinite reflection.

but this potential portal
is a significant discovery.

We step outside to assess
what we're up against

There is a true

long after John's death
and his mother's death.

And the fact that
he saw these things

walking, these entities,
while his mother was dying...

What was there?

And did that thing
that he saw walking,

that he was not supposed to see,

did that traumatize him?

Was it something evil?

Is this house a portal?

Is there something

born into a house

where there was a
portal to the dead?

And I decide to split up the
team to cover more groun

So, right now, we
are going to review

some evidence with Dale.

And during this time Aaron
and our equipment tech, Jeff,

who also designs a
lot of our equipment,

electrical engineer, uh,
they're down in the basement

'cause we haven't been
down to the basement.

We never went
down there yesterday.

So, Dale, we captured
some evidence yesterday,

last night, that we
want to share with you.

We were using a
ITC audio device.

Basically, it taps into

the electromagnetic spectrum
side of audio frequencies

and therefore, through the
rapid scanning of radio waves,

we're listening to
any voices that overlay

the individual sweeps,

and we captured a female voice

that seemed to span
over multiple sweeps.

Which means it's sweeping
through the frequencies, okay?

this weird red giant ball.

that as any type of lens flair

or light reflecting
refraction or anything.

say this is your bed

that you grew up
and were born in.

just as a trigger object.

When he was standing
there in front of that door,

a hold of his skeletal

and shot to the ceiling.

And the arms were
hanging off the ceiling.

about the female EVP we captured

upstairs, right

activity upstairs, you guys,

This is a very steep staircase.

he starts feeling something

an energy by the doll,

his stick figure leaves
his body and grows taller.

The tall figure then
turns and faces the doll

before shape shifting
into a four-legged creature

that straddles the doll.

In this chilling moment,

the figure appears to be
almost attacking the doll.

This is absolutely terrifyin

and also extremely
compellin XLS evidence

because Aaron felt this

moments before it
started mapping in.

What's it mapping, Doug?

and I have an illuminator here.

This illuminator
has IR light and UV.

So, it's a full spectrum
illuminator to use with this camera.

Reason why I like
this illuminator is

I can adjust the intensity

based upon the environment
of the room and also the color.

So, I'm gonna use
this device with this,

and I'm gonna go see if I
can get evidence of the entity,

the little girl that was hovering
above the picture there in the room

where John Steinbeck's
mother, where she died.

As I walk throughout the entire
house and take over 100 photos,

I come to this spot here.

And as I snap a few pictures,

the infrared light
on the X camera

mysteriously drains instantl

mass that was moving.

and I asked what
the black mass was,

and it immediately
said, "Witch."

I was, like, "What?

And so I said, "Tell me
something about this house,"

and it came back
with evil, instantly.

- Like that.

- That's pretty creepy.

[Zak] I think that's gonna be our best
piece of evidence in this investigation.

We tried to debunk this, and
we don't know what the hell it is.

mass or whatever it is,

where we captured it.

And I wanna ask,

We just got witch again.

Twice on the same device,
and now you're asking.

This is terrifying.

Yet again, the
witch identifies itself

just as it did with Billy
in the basement earlier.

Whoever or
whatever this witch is,

it seems to be the dark presence

that has also revealed itsel

in a very incredible
full-spectrum photo.

And to add to the fact that

Billy asked,

"Who was this other dark
shadow captured outside

appearing to go into the house,"

and to receive the
exact same response

to that second
dark shadow figure

is absolutely chilling.
