before anyone wakes up
the paper boy knows his route by heart
so
he doesn't ever think about which house
to pedal to
our last story read by gabriel byrne is
about the adventure a boy and his
grandfather share
have you ever seen the fiddler henry
asked
not yet said grandpa but
maybe we will tonight
[Music]
story time is made possible by the grant
from helen and peter bean
so that families everywhere can share
the joy of reading with their children
[Music]
now would you guys like to see
some great pictures and listen to a fun
story
oh yeah sure and it's called
when i was five and the pictures and the
words
are by arthur howard
[Music]
when i was five i wanted to be an
astronaut
[Music]
or a cowboy
or both when i was five
this was my favorite kind of car
this was my favorite kind of dinosaur
does anybody know what kind of dinosaur
this is i
do what is it pterodactyl
that's right tactile
this was my favorite secret hiding place
and this was my best friend
mark
[Music]
mark had a dog named peggy
and a brother who used bad words
[Music]
touchy
[Laughter]
and bunk beds my favorite kind of bed
when i was
five now i'm six
[Music]
[Applause]
and i want to be a major league baseball
player
or a deep sea diver
now that i'm six this is my favorite
kind of car
[Music]
this is my favorite kind of dinosaur
a tyrannosaurus that's right you all
knew what kind that was
this is my second best hiding place
my favorite one is a secret
[Music]
and this is my best friend
mark
some things never change
[Music]
the end
[Music]
did you like that story yeah yeah
what changed for the boy after he was
six
he liked a different kind of car which
was a
racing race car
yeah he liked his other hiding place
and he learned how to keep secrets
that's right it's very big some
important things
changed did anything stay the same
his friend mark yeah mark
you know what's the same with me i love
stories when i was five and i absolutely
know i'm gonna love them when i'm 105.
me too
how about you guys yeah
take a deep breath
[Music]
gee i i wish you could have come to the
library with us kathy
julia red is a cool book i'm sorry i
missed it
it reminded me of things i liked when i
was five years old
i still like some of the same things now
but i also
like different things too oh yeah when i
was five
my favorite favorite thing was my
stuffed animal collection
but now my favorite thing is my doctor
kit and my favorite thing was my
fireman's cap but now it's my astronaut
uniform
okay your heart's fine i'll say
uh okay
i wonder where lucy is she was supposed
to be
here did someone call me
i'm lucy come on kids hi lucy
hi wolfie hi kathy aquino
this is kyle and this is casey oh hi
casey hi kyle
say lucy yes do you still like the same
things you liked when you were a little
girl
well i like some of the same things like
uh hot chocolate with marshmallows and
drawing pictures
and of course my friends and family but
i also like new things too things that i
hadn't discovered when i was little
gee i wonder if i'll always want to be
an
astronaut i think i'll always want to be
a doctor
well lots of things change as you get
older but some things stay the same
i brought a book about a little boy
who has a job he loves and why don't you
listen and see if it's something you'd
like to do
oh what kind of job is it oh it's very
important
it's called the paper boy and it's by
dave
pilkey
[Music]
the mornings of the paperboy are still
dark
and they are always cold even in the
summer
and on these cold mornings the paper
boys bed is still warm
and it is always hard to get out
even for his dog
but they do and
softly they step down the quiet hall
past the door
where the paper boy's father and mother
are sleeping
past the door where his sister is asleep
and down to the kitchen where they eat
from their bowls
and out to the garage where they quickly
fold their papers
snapping on green rubber bands and
placing them in a large red
bag it's hard to ride a bike
when you're loaded down with newspapers
but the paper boy has learned how to do
this
and he's good at it
[Music]
the paper boy knows his route by heart
so
he doesn't ever think about which house
to pedal to
instead he is thinking about other
things
big things and small things
and sometimes he's thinking about
nothing
at all his
dog too knows this route by heart he
knows
which trees are for sniffing he knows
which bird baths are for drinking
which squirrels are for chasing and
which
cats are for growling
all the world is asleep except for the
paper boy
and his dog and this is the time when
they are the happiest
but little by little the world around
them wakes up
the stars and the moon fade away and the
skies become
orange and pink and when the paper boy
has delivered his
last newspaper he and his dog
race home and his empty red
bag flaps behind him in the cold morning
air soon
they are back home it is still dark
inside but the sounds of mourning are
all
his around and mother are awake and
talking softly in their bed
and his sister is downstairs watching
saturday morning cartoons
and back inside his own room the paper
boy
pulls down his shade and crawls back
into his bed
which is still warm
and while all of the world is waking up
the paper boy is going back to sleep
and his dog is sleeping too
their work is done
and now is the time
for dreaming
[Music]
the end
gee it sounds like it'd be cool to be a
paper boy
you'd be all by yourself on your own
real early in the morning
i think i'll do that instead of being an
astronaut kino
hmm well that can wait a little while
besides i don't think i'd be a paper boy
all my life
oh there are lots and lots of things you
can do in your life kino
and that's part of growing up trying new
things
well what are some of the things that
you'd like to try when you
get older how about you kyle buying
a jet wow yeah yeah
what else trying my first case as
the detective wow
detective huh huh how about you casey
what would you like to do when you get
older uh
the uh
stunts flyer for the blue angels
that's great isn't that sort of
dangerous
no no
unless i have to do the dead man's stall
the dead man stopped dead man stall
like he's hit and he goes down and um
pretends he crashes but then he just
goes right back up
wow wow that's going to take a lot of
skill
huh and i also have to learn to make a
trick like
flying with the you know the group
and making it look like it there's only
one plane
but there's a whole group when they fly
perfectly together right
gee growing up will be filled with new
adventures won't it
yeah yeah yeah it will i was just
thinking
getting big isn't always so great my
grandpa just lost three teeth
and the tooth fairy didn't bring him a
thing wow
i never thought of that me neither
that's one of the not so good things
about growing up huh
huh look gabriel's here oh
i'll move over kalki
hello everybody hi mr burns
hi you know we were just talking about
the things that change when you grow up
well you know one thing
that's never changed for me is how much
i love a good story oh yeah
i'll always like stories even when i'm a
hundred
what about you kids mm-hmm
do you think you'll always like stories
yeah yeah yeah
well before we start this story i
brought a special photograph
it's a picture of the aurora borealis
which means the northern lights cool
they're so beautiful you know you can
see them if you go
way up north and then the sky at night
just
glows with beautiful colors yeah well
this story
takes place way up north under the
northern lights
and it's about a grandpa and a grandson
and the very special adventure that they
have together
would you like to hear yeah yeah yeah
you bet
it's called the fiddler of the northern
lights
and it's written by natalie kinsey
warnock and it's drawn the pictures are
by leslie
w bowman
[Music]
far to the north where wolves howl at
the moon
and the stars hang so low and bright it
seems you could hop from one to the
other like rocks in the stream
the old folks say that strange and
wondrous
things sometimes happen
the pepin family lived in the north
woods along the wild saint maurice
river mama papa
ammon alice and henry
who was eight years old so far nothing
strange or wondrous had happened to
henry
but he knew something might because
grandpa pepin
had told himself
henry loved the little cabin and the
wild tumbling river that was never out
of ear or mind
but most of all he loved when grandpa
pepin came whistling through the woods
to visit
the dark winter days didn't seem so long
or lonely
when grandpa pepin was there telling his
stories of the north woods
legends he'd heard as a boy of the great
white owl
ebu blanc are the terrible loot garu
who was part man and part wolf
[Music]
some of grandpa's stories were scary and
some were not
but henry knew them all by heart
did you know that rabbits come out to
dance on moonlit nights
henry asked armand when they were ice
fishing at the trout halls
i told you that i'm on set
grandpa pepin grandpa pepin is just
making that up
herman said don't believe any of his
stories
do you know what makes the northern
lights dance henry asked mama and alice
when they were carrying in armloads of
wood
mama and alice didn't know magic
said henry and the fiddler
what fiddler alice asked
her grandpa was a boy henry said
the old folk of the village told of a
fiddler who lives where the northern
lights are born
but he plays his fiddle he rouses the
lights from sleep
and they dance to his music ah
henry side mama that's just one of
grandpa's stories
henry ran all the way to grandpa's cap
the fiddler is real isn't he grandpa
why of course he is grandpa said
but most people never see him
i wish i could see him henry said
couldn't we look for him sometime
just you and me the next night
grandpa brought skates he'd made from
wood and barrel hoops
we're going on an adventure grandpa said
at night henry asked sure
said grandpa night is the best time for
adventure
when there's a touch of magic in the air
where we call grandpa to look for the
fiddler
grandpa said henry and grandpa
strapped the skates to their boots and
swooped up the frozen river
the forest and the sky seemed so large
and dark
like the mouth of the terrible loop garu
ready to swallow them
henry skated very close to grandpa
have you ever seen the fiddler henry
asked
not yet said grandpa but maybe
we will tonight the frozen river was
black
and smooth like a mirror
stars glittered in the ice
henry skated from one to the other
following the stars north
the fiddler must be playing grandpa said
see the northern lights are beginning to
dance
the ice shone with the colors of the sky
purple and red and green henry and
grandpa skated for miles on that ribbon
of
sparkling dancing light
[Music]
henry had never been so far up the river
once or twice he thought he had music
but he never saw the fit
grandpa stopped i'll just
rest a few minutes grandpa said
he sat down and closed his eyes
he looks old henry thought
henry watched the lights fade and the
river became
just a river again black and smooth
henry felt tired too and a little sad
the fiddler must have been just one of
grandpa's stories after all
we should be getting home grandpa said
they'll be uh they'll be wondering where
we are
i'm sorry we didn't find the fiddler
it was very late before they got back
home
mama gave them both some hot tea
and a good scolding you had us
worried sick mama said where were you
i'm sorry angeline grandpa said tiredly
we uh we shouldn't have gone so far up
the river
we went to find the fiddler said henry
oh paw mama said to grandpa
i never want to hear another one of your
wild stories
there was a knock at the door
mercy said mama who else would be out so
late on such a cold night
a stranger stood in the darkness
his long white beard hung down to his
waist
and his blue eyes sparkled like stars
under one arm he carried a long
black box
now i was out playing tonight and i was
hoping to warm myself
by your fire papa told him to come in
and mama fixed him some hot tea too
what were you playing henry asked
a fiddle the stranger said would you
like to hear it
henry and grandpa smiled at each other
we sure would said grandpa
the stranger opened the box and picked
up a black fiddle
that gleamed in the candle light we
followed the lights up the river
henry said can you
make them come out again tonight
the stranger lifted the fiddle to his
chin
and began to play
[Music]
the song that poured from the fiddle was
as sweet
and clear as a mountain stream
as it flowed out into the night filling
up the dark spaces of the sky
the northern lights began to dance
people began to gather around the cabin
neighbors coming from up and down the
river
no one on all the wild scent maurice had
ever had such music
and all who listened knew they'd never
hear
such music again the bright lights
leaped from the darkness spinning and
twirling like dancers in their finest
gowns
when the neighbors saw how the lights
swayed to the music
they were frightened don't be afraid
the fiddler said i shall play my fiddle
and you shall dance
all night
soon people fill the cabin to burst
chairs and stools were pushed aside
to make a dancing floor the walls
rattled with the thumping of feet and
the fiddler's music
while the northern lights burned over
him
on and on he played all through the
night
until they could dance no more
the music slowed as sad
and lonesome as a wolf howl
when it stopped the lights
took one last bell
and then they were gone
the sun will soon be rising the fiddler
said
the dance is over and i must be on my
way
he turned toward the north and grandpa
and henry watched
as he disappeared into the woods
off to bed with you alma said hugging
henry
then she hugged grandpa too huh
i'll never say another word about your
wild stories
you know grandpa said i
i didn't believe my wild stories either
until
until now and they all laughed
henry never saw the fiddler again
but to this day when the northern lights
are sweeping across the sky
there are old folk along the saint
maurice
who say that when the wind is just right
you can hear the sound of a fiddle
as for grandpa's other stories well
henry still hasn't seen the rabbits
dance
but on moonlit nights he fills his
pockets with carrots
just in case
wow you know grandpa pepin was just
as surprised as henry was to see the
fiddler yeah
the grandpa told the story but i don't
think he believed it himself till he saw
the fiddler
it was quite an adventure for both of
them wasn't it yeah
even if you're old you can still have
adventures huh
i never want to stop having adventures
me neither
me neither me neither oh and speaking
of adventures i have a handful of them
here
