a replacement guy from mainland.

Jake: I'd be severely

Narrator: the prospect of
failure threatens to dig them

Into an insurmountable hole.

So we need to kick it

200,000 pounds still to catch,

They'll need to strike fast

Before the crab barrel

Casey: it is toasted down there.

So we need to find

Desperate times call

There's this thing on the chart
that kind of looks like a boob.

[ Laughs ] feeling it
in the loins, are we?

Taking a page
out of my book, I see.

Narrator: intrigued by
a deep crater-shaped divot

In the sea floor.

Casey: I like this depth.

Those are easy for them
to get into.

Narrator: casey bets
the topography below

Is a natural trap
for their opilio quarry.

I've seen you pull an elephant
out of a hat before,

Casey: at this point, we really
need our luck to turn around.

♪♪

Got to get our "a" game and
really knock a solid trip out

Narrator: eyeing
a new, unexplored region

Of the grounds,

Captain and crew scramble to
haul and stack all 150 pots.

At least nobody's hurt.

Something happened.

145 Miles southwest
on the summer bay.

Bill: most of our year is set
for when we went in.

Way up north
by towards, say, max,

We just turned the corner,

Getting ready to haul gear
and an injury --

A guy tore his achilles.

Every turn we've had issues.

Narrator: with 120 miles
to go after detouring

To drop off a crippled crewman,
captain wild bill wichrowski

Steams toward pots
set in the far north

Nearly a week ago.

Bill: we get out, we finally
start get rolling,

We got a guy that explodes
his achilles tendon.

He separates his achilles.

Lucky enough to get another guy
in to fill his place.

Nick: we need a lot
out of you.

Todd: yeah.

You're replacing a guy
that wore pretty big boots.

Well, I'm gonna do my best,
'cause it's what I'm here to do.

Right on, man.

Narrator: replenishing the ranks

29-Year-old greenhorn
todd kochutin.

Oh, no.
Breakfast, but...

Man:
okay. We like breakfast.

[ Laughs ]

Bill: so for 24 hours, we've
been going directly

Into the weather,

And the guys are gonna get
the bulk of the ice off here.

Narrator: laden with
100,000 pounds of frozen spray,

Bill puts the crew to work.

Bill: maybe get the boys to get
all the easy stuff,

The rails and all the bulk.

She's heavy,
let's lighten her up a bit.

Eager to shed weight
from the summer bay's haul

And resist
the threat of instability.

Nick: probably 100,000 pounds
on the bough right now.

It's got to come off.

It's getting to
a dangerous level.

[Bleep]

Todd: welcome to
the winter wonderland.

Bill:
it's kind of a thankless job.

Every new guy goes, "oh, cool.
We get to break ice."

That lasts about 20 minutes,

And they're like, "this sucks."

See what this kid's got?

Narrator: as new kid on the
boat, todd's trial by ice

Will determine
if he skates by his first test

Or heads
towards the chopping block.

Todd: this comes with any
opie season, you know.

Beating ice is just
part of the job.

It's not nice,
but it needs to be done.

We're just doing this to stay
alive, to keep the boat upright

Right now.

A lot of people
do maintenance on their cars

To keep the car driving safely.

Same thing.

Bill: you know, when you're
breaking ice,

It's a lot of energy.

Think about
swinging a sledgehammer

Or any kind of manual labor job.

So before they even
start working,

They usually expend
a good part of their energy

To get the ice off.

Ice is not nice.

Landon: a piece of ice just came
and smashed him right

In the face.

You got a bloody nose.

Yeah, it was a big chunk
of ice that got you, dude.

I couldn't tell there was, like,
a puddle of blood on you.

You opened that up.

He's got a split
underneath his nostril.

That's why
it's bleeding so bad.

He took a swing
way up top at it,

A big chunk of ice broke off
and hit him right in the face.

I mean, I saw it was.
It was pretty bad.

Busted his nose right open,

Bleeding instantly, blood all
over the deck out there.

Narrator: while veteran

From blunt force trauma...

Trying to get used
to the weather, the cold,

But this is a different
kind of cold.

Narrator: ...the greenhorn slips
through the minefield of danger

I'm gonna stop thinking positive

Narrator: 40 miles southeast
on the saga.

Jake: let's do it. Game on.

Jake: the crew is doing
a lot better.

Our goal for the day
is crushing a bunch of crab

And not to get hurt.

Narrator: powering through the
perils of the green crew.

This is our farthest
north string.

I don't know what's here.

The theory is that the crab
that I was following,

One school was moving
a mile north a day.

Narrator: captain jake anderson
tracks a cluster

Of arctic-bound opilio

Through the center
of the fishing grounds.

This time without injury.

Jake: I've got roughly about
a few more days

To fill up this boat.

One more haul straight through
until this forward tank's full

Or I got to go home.

Narrator: if on target,
the skipper's super-sized string

Will bag the 40,000 pounds
he needs to fill his final tank

And make his offload
in just 48 hours.

Jake: let's go.

I've never filled all three
tanks of this boat during opies.

Hoping I can top off everything,
pop hatches, all that fun stuff

That I haven't got to do yet
with snow crab.

A leviathan-sized mass of crab,

Revitalizing captain and crew
for an epic grind.

Jake: that's badass.

Narrator: haul them up...

[Bleep] we're loading up
right now. Loading up, dude.

Narrator:
...and setting them back.

Jake: you're looking at maybe
$6,000, $7,000 a pot.

We're gonna try to haul
70 of them.

I've ever seen in my life.

Narrator: the saga's half tank
is partially filled,

Allowing the water to move back
and forth violently,

Its destructive power wreaking
havoc on the ship's stability.

The slack tank is
a safety issue.

Worst case scenario, you'll have
half a tank of water.

We roll, that water rolls,
then you roll over,

And you die quick.

Joe: jake!

Narrator:
with the emergency pump running,

The saga adverts capsize.

[ Alarm beeping ]

[ Sighs ] [bleep]

Joe: come on. Let's go.

[ Beeping continues ]

[ Alarm blips ]

[Bleep]

My emergency pump is fine,
which is great for safety,

But I can't ensure it's great
for keeping crab alive.

Narrator:
the captain's new crisis.

The problem isn't my
emergency pump not working well,

The problem is the plumbing
doesn't flow as well.

Narrator: jake's backup system
fails to move

As much freshly oxygenated water
through the tanks,

Triggering a race to diagnose

And repair the primary system
before a mass die-off.

Jake: so I don't get the proper
pressure I want

To air flow the crab.

Right now, by my numbers,
it says I should have

$200,000-Worth of product
in my half tank.

I can't afford to lose $200,000,

Because I have to pay
for that myself.

Try to get
our main pump running.

I don't want dead crab.

suffering yet another

feel it out a little bit.

Narrator:

Set in deeper waters...

[ Machine beeps ]
I'm over.

...betting their entire
200-pot load

On an underwater
bowl-shaped feature

To fill their tanks.

Casey: and I know we're kind of
putting all our eggs

In one basket,
so to speak, but.

And it seems like this place has
pretty hard borders around it.

Josh: yeah.

[ Crew shouts ]

[ Telephone rings ]

♪♪

Yeah?

Yeah. Okay. Yeah.

What's happened is a brake pad
slipped out of place,

The pad rode on it
and got it hotter than hell,

Heating up the caliper,

The lower ring of the caliper
goes bad,

And it pisses out brake fluid.

Narrator: the breaks normally
stop the propeller shaft,

But a misaligned brake pad means
the shaft won't slow,

Spinning instead in a
superheated frictional frenzy,

Rupturing the old ring
and spewing out brake fluid.

Narrator:
thanks to the scent of smoke
rousing taylor from his bunk,

The immediate danger is averted,

But their season
is still in peril.

[ Telephone rings ]

Yeah.

Crew member: roger!

♪♪

Do not stand
in line with it.

If that gets
too much tension,

Both of those chains
go "ka-boom."

The chain don't
come apart easy.

We're just gonna have
to hurt some.

Narrator: the only way to stop
the runaway shaft from spinning

Is to bind it with chains.

A dangerous move that risks
snapping the iron links,

Grenading the engine room
with jagged steel.

The tank, it should be okay.

[ Horn honking ]

Narrator: as repairs get
under way below...

...upstairs, josh -- it's a
traffic jam.

Yeah. You on this one?

Yeah, we're just having
some issues

With one of shafts right now

So I'm in neutral,
just kind of drifting with it.

Yeah, roger. I see a bag set up
off my portside here,

I'm not sure if that's yours.

[ Radio static buzzes ]
man: well, good luck with that.

[ Machinery whirs ]

Casey: see it pull on it?

It started turning, put too much
pressure against it.

[ Machinery whirs,
metal scraping ]

but we continue to beat it.

It's gonna keep
throwing arrows at us,

And we're just gonna keep
putting up shields.

Well, joe came up and told me
I got a slack tank.

We're completely safe right now,

But I can ensure my product.

Narrator:
working off an emergency pump,

The flow of water and oxygen
the crab need to survive

jeopardizing the crab

We'll try to fix the problem.

Narrator: bringing his operation
screeching to a halt,

in the pump's electrical panel,

Tripping the breaker
and k*lling the flow of water.

Bill: we're back on the ground.

Narrator: ...on the summer bay.

We've had breakdowns,

And we got a guy that blew
a tendon out

Just pushing on a pot.

You know, we're lucky
we got a new guy here.

So, it's time to start reading
what's in the gear

And adjusting.

Narrator: after a never-ending
parade of pain,

Captain wild bill needs to break
his bad luck streak

And finally haul a pot,

Preferably filled with crab.

New guy's a little interesting.

He looks like he's about
95 pounds soaking wet,

But I guess I should be happy
we're just got a guy,

And we're back out.

Todd: yeah, I've dabbled with
all the jobs on deck,

Except for hydraulics.

I'm blind in my left eye
so I have no depth perception

So I don't mess with that
at all.

Bill: I'm just waiting
for the break.

Waiting for something that
falls in line correctly here,

Might surprise us.

Might be awesome. We'll see.

Nick: it's all right.

I'm gonna watch him like a hawk,
