[Music]

so

[Music]

hi mara did kino arrive oh yes he's here

i think he fell asleep he was really

tired for some reason

maybe he stayed up late last night

reading well either that

or he's tired from his trip to the beach

yesterday oh

he went to the beach yes with some

friends

oh lucy if you'd only seen him when he

came back he was so excited

he told me they read a book while they

were there oh look at him

he looks so cute when he's sleeping i

wonder what he's dreaming

[Music]

wow am i dreaming am i

really really dreaming the funny thing

about this dream is

that it looks and feels and smells just

like what

really happened yesterday

hi weren't you here yesterday yes but we

came back for your dream

are we going to read again it's your

dream

you decide well i'd like us to read the

same book we read yesterday

sure i'm curious why the same one

well first of all it's about the beach

and second of all

if we read the same book that way i can

be sure it's not going to be a bad dream

because it was a good story well that's

clear enough

how's the dream so far oh it's great the

beach

a story some friends all we need is some

nachos to make it perfect

have some nachos wow cool

okay here is greetings from sandy beach

by bob graham

there were plenty of tears at the start

of our holiday

dad cried about leaving our dog mum

cried about leaving grandma and granddad

gerald cried because he'd been awake all

night overexcited and couldn't sleep

i cried because everyone else

was crying and we were only going for

two days

it was better when we got going dad

dabbed at his nose for a while with wet

paper tissues

mum started on the toffees before we

even left our streak

gerald went straight to sleep with his

mouth open

and i put on my headphones and listened

to my tape

the best of the heartbeats

the trip took forever

nothing much happened on the way except

a girl in a bus stuck her tongue out at

me

mum and dad sang songs i didn't know and

gerald threw up

yuck at the campsite things picked up

there were people on motorbikes they

were called

the disciples of death dad didn't like

the look of them

don't go near them said my dad stay away

from them gerald

said my mum they had a dog with goggles

that rode up on the petrol tank

it was the best thing i've ever seen in

my

life then the kids in the bus arrived

must be some kind of school outing my

dad said

my mum was walking around with toffee

paper stuck on her seat

gerald sat in the sand playing with his

plastic charging rhino

and that girl stuck her tongue out at me

again

then we put the tent up at least

we tried to put the tent up

[Music]

dad couldn't figure it out although mum

got her bit up

i looked after gerald who kept wandering

off the disciples finally showed us how

dad looked nervous and smiled at them a

lot

we didn't go straight into the water dad

wanted to enjoy the sun we've got the

beach to ourselves

he said it's so peaceful here

my mum kept saying

gerald was happy enough just blobbing

around in the sand

the girl from the bus fell right out of

the sky

onto dad he wasn't too pleased

you've got the whole beach he said and

you land on me

so we shared the beach with the school

kids they played a cowboys getting shot

game

to see how far they could roll i joined

in

it was just like the cowboys in the

films

high dives from the tops of buildings

into the dusty street

i won the girl with the tongue

was quite impressed so were the

disciples of death

we shared the water with the school kids

too dad washed off the sand

the sand that had fallen out of the sky

and stuck to his sunburn oil

mum played puddles with gerald i stood

away from them a bit

i'm embarrassed by my parents when other

kids are around

i don't know why the school kids went

back for lunch with their teachers

fancy seeing your teacher and just a

pair of flowery shorts

[Music]

dad and i made a mermaid mum wrote

gerald's name in the sand

not with a stick with gerald

[Music]

we count that night in the tent dad

cooked the dinner

camp stew out of a tin mum and dad

played word games with little wooden

squares

there was a lot of shrieking from the

school camp

gerald went straight to sleep very pink

from the sun

so did i

the next day we played boats in the rock

pool with the ice cream sticks from the

disciples

we'll bear mom in the sand dad caught a

rather

small fish and gerald

ate something disgusting

from his fishing basket

[Music]

and we slept our second night in the

tent

[Music]

in the morning we all packed up the lady

disciple bought us a raspberry icy pop

each the tongue girl gave me a souvenir

shell with the name of the camping park

on it

and the biggest bike he sat gerald right

on the petrol tank

they all passed us on the way home first

the bus

then the disciples with their little

white dog his ears streaming in the wind

they were all right really so my dad

once you got to know them he added a bit

further down the road

there was still a slight smell of old

fish about gerald

dad held him at arm's length

let's get gerald into the bath my mum

said

it was quite a while back now but i've

still got the icy pop sticks and the

shell

souvenirs i guess

gee well where's sandy beach and aren't

all beaches sandy i mean don't you have

to have sand to have a beach

well maybe the sandy beach in this store

is in australia because that's where the

books from

and no not all beaches have sand some

beaches have stones or pebbles instead

wow they do so a sand castle would be a

stone castle huh

hey can we get our feet wet now

yes we can oh by the way how did you

like the story keno

well i liked it can we go now okay

last one's a stinky shoe okay

yay hey

wait for me

[Music]

hi how's everyone doing

okay i'm ready let's go

i'm not gonna be that stinky shoe yeah

what go where i just got here well to

the

water i think you were dreaming kino

well if i was a dreaming

then where did this sand come from

maybe you brought it over in your pocket

when you came back from the beach

hmm sand from a sandy beach

well i didn't bring sand

but i brought a book oh yeah which one

well it's a sweet little story

that's so sad it almost makes you want

to cry oh well that's okay

i love stories that make me cry what's

so sad about this story

that's about a dog poor little dog who

had no friends

gee that is sad everybody needs a friend

you know i'm the friend of every boy and

girl who likes books and stories

and especially you my little porcupines

who come and visit me for story time

oh hey hey you know i was just talking

about friends who like stories

and here you are are we all ready for a

story

very good well now

this is the story of socrates the dog

it was written by rascal and the

pictures were drawn

by gert bogarts

now socrates was an orphan his parents

had been snatched up by the dog

catcher and taken to the pound

leaving socrates to live alone on the

streets

he dreamed of a home other than his

cardboard box

and more than anything else socrates

dreamed of having a friend

he looked to the other street dogs for

company but they just

snarled and growled

they wouldn't share their scraps and

socrates was left to rummage through

garbage cans on his own

it seemed to socrates that he was always

alone

every night he wandered the streets

wagging his tail at passers-by

hoping that one of them would take him

home

but the people just looked the other way

poor thing some of them would mutter

but they always kept their eyes on the

ground

then one day socrates was scouring the

street for something to eat

he found the most curious thing

slip sniff socrates examined this

new thing

certainly wasn't something to eat

socrates discovered the thing fit his

nose perfectly

ah perhaps this will help socrates

thought

and then he went on his way

socrates stepped inside the flower shop

for the first time no one chased him

away

the florist took a look at him and

laughed a friendly laugh

then he gave socrates a quick pat on the

head

socrates thought the flowers looked

brighter than they ever had before

next socrates went to the toy shop

shop owners smiled and said here you go

boy

then he handed socrates a bit of a

sandwich

the toy seemed to be smiling too

socrates could hardly believe his eyes

all day socrates roamed the streets

everywhere he went there were smiles

pats on the head and treats

extraordinary socrates thought

as he looked at his reflection hmm

this thing on my nose must be magical

well as the day ended socrates heard

music

when he turned the corner he heard the

music maker

musician looked at socrates hey there

friend

he said giving socrates a pat

then the musician squinted at socrates

and said

i see you found my glasses

and a good thing too i can't see a thing

without them

if you hadn't come along i'd never have

been able to find my way home

the musician laughed and stretched out

his hand

to socrates socrates pulled back

what he thought give back this

magical thing this thing that had helped

him find

food this thing that had made him

so many friends

then socrates looked at the musician

and he imagined him wandering blindly

through the streets looking for his way

home

he imagined him hungry slowly socrates

stepped forward

the musician took the glasses

then he gave socrates a strong pat

thanks fella

[Music]

good friend like you deserves a special

treat

let's go home cook up some dinner

[Music]

and then socrates knew

that he had indeed found something

magical after all

a friend

that is so sad

what did socrates had no friends well

yeah that's real

sad but you know what's also sad is that

when i was dreaming that we were at the

beach i was gonna go in the water

and just then i woke up yes but

what about the dog well what about him

he wasn't at the beach didn't you feel

sorry for him

oh yeah i did but the story had a happy

ending

ah that's true see say bill you know

you know what would take even that

little bitty titsy weetsy sadness away

it's a funny story it would huh you bet

if i find one would you read it to us i

don't see why not

yes kino do you have a book that we

could use to

you know lighten things up a little as a

matter of fact

i do a friend of mine sent this over

cecilia

the book is called the rooster who went

to his uncle's wedding

hi would you read it though yes indeed

here we go the rooster who went to his

uncle's

wedding it was written by alma flora

otta

and it was illustrated by kathleen

kuchera

i'm coming too this looks like a good

picture book all right early one morning

when the sun had not yet appeared

the rooster in this story was busy

shining

his beak and combing up his feathers it

was the day of his uncle's wedding

and the rooster wanted to be on time

[Music]

when everything looked perfect he set

off down the road with a brisk and

springy walk

with each step the rooster nodded his

head thinking of all the wonderful

things waiting for him at the wedding

band

before long his stomach began to growl

i wish i'd eaten breakfast he said

then something caught his eye there

next to the road sat a single

kernel of corn perfect

the rooster thought but when he got

closer

he could see that the colonel was lying

in a puddle of mud

if he ate it he would get his beak all

dirty

oh that rooster was hungry

but he couldn't go to his uncle's

wedding with a dirty beak

[Music]

what to do peck or not

peck he wondered the rooster stared at

the colonel

and with one sharp pick he

gobbled it down and wound up with a beak

full of mud

so the rooster looked around quickly for

someone who could help him

first he noticed the grass growing on

the

side of the road tear grass

velvety grass won't you please clean my

beak so that i can go to my own uncle's

wedding

but the grass answered no

i won't why should i

well now the rooster looked around to

see if there was anyone else who could

help him just then he

saw a lamb grazing in the field

maybe he could scare the grass into

helping so he asked the lamb

dear lamb willie lamb please eat the

grass it won't clean my beak so that i

can go to my

own uncle's wedding but the lamb

answered

nah i won't

why should i

well then the rooster spread it back and

forth and dismay

but then he saw a dog walking on the

road

so he asked the dog dear dog fierce dog

please

bite the lamb that won't eat the grass

that won't clean my feet so i can go to

my own uncle's wedding

but the dog answered oh no i won't

oh why should i

well this rooster was not one to give up

so he went over to a stick lying on the

road

and he asked it dear stick hard stick

please hit the dog that won't bite the

lamb that won't eat the grass that won't

clean my feet so that i can go to my own

uncle's wedding

but the sticker said no i won't why

should i

brewster was starting to worry

but he looked around for someone else to

help

and he spotted a campfire the shepherds

had lit

he got close to the fire and asked

dear fire bright fire please burn the

stick that won't hit the dog that won't

bite the lamb that won't eat the grass

that won't clean my beak so i can go to

my own uncle's wedding

but the fire answered no i won't

why should i

the rooster ruffled his feathers and

paste

would anyone be able to help him in time

then he noticed a brook crossing the

field

he bent over and whispered as sincerely

as he could tear water clear water

please without the fire that won't burn

the stick that won't hit the dog that

won't bite the lamb that won't eat the

grass it won't clean my beak so i can go

to my own uncle's wedding

but the water answered no

i won't why should i

hell no the poor rooster couldn't think

of

anyone else to ask for help

he lifted his muddy beak up and crawled

[Music]

right

then he noticed that the sun was

beginning to appear in the clouds

and he said dear son

my good friend please try out the water

that won't put out the fire that won't

burn the stick that won't

hit the dog that won't bite the land

that won't eat the grass that won't

clean my feet so that i could go to my

own uncle's wedding

[Music]

and the sun answered

of course i will

every morning you greet me with a bright

song my friend

i will gladly dry out the water

but then the water cried out no please

don't try me out i will put out the fire

and the firecracker no please don't put

me out

i will burn the stick and the stick and

turn cried out no

please don't burn me i will hit the dog

and the dog's right i'll know

if he's all to hit me i will fight the

lamb and the lamb cried already

no please don't bite me i will eat the

grass but the grass got out very

no please don't eat me

i will clean the rooster's beak

and before you know it rooster's beak

shown as bright as today

so the rooster said goodbye to everyone

with a happy

and went on his way to his uncle's

wedding and he walked with a brisk and

springy walk

to get there on time for the benefits

hey you know everybody that story

reminds me of one time when my mom

bought me this really fancy outfit

to go to this really fancy party and

right before we left

i spilled half a chocolate milkshake all

over it and i had to change my clothes

and what did you do well we had to wait

while we cleaned my fancy outfit

well at least you didn't have to go

through the list of animals and things

before you could get it clean

no but you should have seen my mom whoo

she was not happy

whoa well thank you bill for reading

that story

you're welcome and now look at my story

pick for today wow

illustrations i have

ever seen yeah patty and the fox

sandwich it's called me first
