okay mr finn let's have a race i may be

a big gigantic whale

and you may think that i'm slow and

clumsy but i'm not

i'm very strong and i'm very fast you'll

see

what oh uh-huh yes

good good okay we'll start on this side

of the ocean let's go over here yeah

and swim all the way over here to the

other side

and whoever gets there first is the

winner

oh you can be a judge goldie and so can

you speckles

okay

wow did you see that mr finn

that was a giant lucy fish don't be

afraid though

lucy fishes may be giant but they're

harmless

hi kino are you talking to my fish again

uh-huh boy your fish tank is so cool

you know watching the fish helps put me

in the mood for the painting i'm working

on

it's a seascape a seascape

what's that a picture of the sea an

ocean painting

oh well watching the fish made me feel

like pretending that i'm a whale

and pretending that fish can talk and

that we were gonna have a race

oh you know what i think i have a

wonderful story here about

whales would you like to hear it oh do

fish have fins

sure i'd like to hear it uh hold on let

me take off my mask

okay ready

here it is it's called the whale song

and it's written by diane sheldon with

paintings by gary blythe

oh any seascapes yes here we go

lily's grandmother told her a story

once upon a time she said the ocean was

filled with whales they were as big as

the hills

they were as peaceful as the moon they

were the most

wondrous creatures you could ever

imagine

lily climbed onto her grandmother's lap

i used to sit at the end of the pier and

listen for whales

said lily's grandmother sometimes i'd

sit there all day and all night

then suddenly i'd see them coming toward

me from miles away

they moved through the water as if they

were dancing

but why did they swim to you grandma ask

lily

how did they know you were there lily's

grandmother

smiled oh you had to bring them

something

special a perfect shell or a beautiful

stone

and if they liked you the whales would

take your

gift and give you something in return

what would they give you grandma asked

lily

what did you get from the whales

lily's grandmother's sighed once or

twice

she whispered once or twice

[Music]

i heard them sing

lily's great uncle frederick stomped

into the room

that's nothing but a silly old tail he

snapped

whales were important for their meat and

for their bones and for their blubber

if you have to tell lily about whales

then tell her something useful

don't fill her head with nonsense

singing

whales indeed there were whales here

millions of years before there were

ships

or cities or even cave dwellers

continued lily's grandmother people used

to say

they were magical people used to

eat them and boil them down for oil

rumbled lily's great uncle frederick and

he stomped back

out of the room lily dreamt about whales

in her dreams she saw them as large as

mountains and bluer than the sky

in her dreams she heard them singing

their voices like the wind

in her dreams they leapt from the water

and called her name

[Music]

in the morning lily went down to the

ocean

to the place where no one fished or swam

or sailed

she walked to the end of the old pier

the water was empty and still

she took a yellow flower out of her

pocket and dropped it in the water

this is for you she called into the air

lily sat at the end of the pier and

waited

she waited all morning and all

afternoon then as dusk began to fall

uncle frederick came down the hill after

her

enough of this foolishness he said

come on home you can't be dreaming your

life away

that night lily awoke suddenly

the room was bright with moonlight

she sat up and listened the house was

quiet

lily climbed out of bed and went to the

window

she could hear something in the distance

on the far

side of the hill

she raced outside and down to the shore

her heart was pounding as she reached

the sea

there enormous in the ocean were the

whales

they left and jumped and spun across the

moon

their singing filled the night

lily saw her yellow flower dancing on

the spray

minutes passed or maybe hours suddenly

lily felt the breeze rustle her

nightgown and the cold nip at her toes

she

shivered and rubbed her eyes then it

seemed the ocean was still again

and the night dark and silent

lily thought she must have been dreaming

she stood up and turned toward home

then from far far away

on the breath of the wind she heard

[Music]

the whales were calling

her name

[Music]

oh oh that's a really mysterious ending

ah yes it is

do you think that lily imagined

the whale spoke her name or was it magic

gee i'm not sure maybe it was

both your imagination's like magic

sometimes isn't it

like when you're dreaming oh yes

i think your imagination is the most

magical part of you hmm

i wonder if mr finn and goldie and

speckles heard me saying their names

when i was pretending i was a whale

hi lucy hi keno hi amy hi sarah hi brian

hi sarah hey brittany

come on i brought some great story books

hey what's in the box

well it's a special imagination box

and sarah and brittany and i made it

it's a surprise it is

well then surprise open it open

no no not yet

first i want to read some stories

and um the first one is about a little

girl who

uses her imagination you want to hear it

yeah i'm ready okay are you guys ready

yeah yeah

it's called the paper princess

by elisa cleven

a little girl sat in the sunshine

drawing a princess the princess's dress

was like a forest

her socks were like starry skies

her shoes were like watermelons

her face was so friendly and brave

that the little girl loved her

what kind of hair should i give my

princess

the little girl wondered as she cut the

princess out

hmm yarn hair would be soft

she said offering the princess a cr*cker

cotton hair would be fluffy taking the

princess for a ride

she thought whoosh

the wind sent the princess flying

oh wait the little girl chased after her

i didn't finish you i'll finish

myself the princess called in a voice as

thin and new as she was

but i want to play with you the little

girl cried

you're the best thing i ever made don't

blow away

the princess tried to fly back to the

girl

but the wind carried her the other way

so she waved goodbye

then somersaulted through the air over a

meadow

over a river hmm

what kind of hair should i give myself

the princess wondered as she tumbled

through the sky

cloud hair is too cold she thought

trying a little on blossom hair smells

too

sweet she sneezed

candy wrapper hair is too crinkly

she threw the candy wrapper off and

sailed on

bald as the man in the moon

arriving at a carnival

a boy on the ferris wheel caught her

hand in hand they whirled around

the princess loved the ride the colored

lights

the stars the jingling music

the warmth of the little boy's hand

hello up there the boy's mother called

the boy waved back dropping the princess

[Music]

the wind caught her up again it carried

her

into a town past houses smelling of

supper

past children playing with dolls

past parents tucking their children into

bed

the princess saw them and felt homesick

i can do without hair she said but

i wish my little girl were with me

gently the wind rocked the princess

until she drifted off to sleep

she floated like a leaf through the

night

the princess awoke to the sound

of a little girl's voice

what a pretty paper doll too bad they

forgot to give it hair

she didn't forget the princess wanted to

say

but the little girl's thumb was pressed

over her mouth

the girl took a pen out of her pocket

scribbled on the princess's head and

frowned

oh she said green hair

i thought that was my yellow pen now it

looks

worse before the princess could say a

word

the girl crumpled her up and threw her

into the garbage

can the princess wanted to cry

green hair is all right she thought

she didn't have to crumple me help

the princess tried to shout but only a

muffled squeak came out

[Music]

she tried to jump out of the garbage can

but was too

tightly crumpled to move children

came and went throwing trash on top of

her

a jk pecking for food

how lucky a buttery bread crust the j

squawked how sweet an apple core

the jay pecked at the princess ooh how

handy

a fat wad of paper i'll shred it to

pieces

and weave it into my nest

bird don't shred me the princess

squeaked as the j flew off with her

oh smooth me out so i can see the sun

and

fly above the lovely world and

find the little girl who made me

what's this the jay wondered hearing the

princess

some little creature must be caught in

this paper

back at her nest the jay smoothed out

the paper

and saw the princess my gracious

she cried who are you

i'm a princess said the princess

the jay brushed a speck of tuna fish

from the princess's face

oh poor princess all wrinkled with

scribbled green hair

let's cover it with something warm and

soft

she pulled a little real hair from her

nest

and stuck it onto the princess's head

with sat

how pretty you look the jay remarked as

she brushed the princess's hair with a

feather

is there anything else you would like

i'd like to find the little girl who

made me

said the princess where does she live

as the jay the princess

tried to remember she

lives near a tree with a swing

not far from the meadow and a river

and a carnival do you think we can find

her

we can try said the jay i'll carry you

with my feet

hold on tight away they flew

out past the town over the carnival

over the river

saw many little girls but they didn't

see the one

who made the princess at length

the jay stopped to rest oh

i'm getting tired she said and i'd

better get back to my nest

why don't you come home with me

thanks replied the princess thanks for

everything you've done

but i'll keep looking for my little girl

good luck the jay said softly

she hugged the princess goodbye

i hope we meet again called the princess

as the j

rose into the sky

i hope i find my girl she thought

as she fluttered down

to the meadow and landed

beside a little boy

the boy's face was sweet but sad

what's the matter asked the princess

i drew a picture of the meadow and it

blew away

said the boy could you draw another

picture like it

asked the princess i don't have any more

paper said the boy

and it's getting dark the princess had

an idea

my other side is blank she said you

could draw on it

that wouldn't hurt you ask the boy no

said the princess i'm paper

just don't crumple me up if you don't

like your picture

i won't said the boy and he began to

draw

[Music]

this picture is for my sister the boy

told the princess

today is her birthday what's a birthday

asked the princess

it's the day you were born the boy

explained the day you came into the

world

my birthday was yesterday the princess

said

a little girl drew me and cut me out

and i want to get home to her

[Music]

i'll help you find her what does she

look like

she has brown hair and a friendly face

the princess said my sister has brown

hair

the boy replied and she's usually

friendly

she fed me a cr*cker the princess added

and she loves to draw

my sister loves to draw said the boy as

he carried the princess home

and i think she would love you

he opened the door to his house happy

birthday

he called to his sister handing her the

picture

and the princess oh

what a beautiful picture his sister said

but why is it shaped like she

turned the picture over

my princess she cried it's

you she gave the princess

a kiss

it's you cried the princess

trembling with joy happy birthday

where have you been asked the little

girl

where did you find real hair the

princess told her story

about the search for hair and the ferris

wheel

and the lonely night and the scribble

girl and the helpful jay

and the journey back to the brother in

the meadow

and home to the little girl

while she listened the girl made the

princess a paper crown

and a cozy bed and an elephant to ride

and a banjo to play

and a brother to play with and a sweater

to wear

when she went out flying here

there everywhere

and home again

great whoa that was cool

the paper princess was sort of like a

pretend friend huh

right that's exactly right

have you two ever had a pretend friend

you know an imaginary friend

i have you have and what was her name or

his name

i had three you had three three pretend

friends

really do they have names what are their

names

twinkle mouse twinkle nose which is the

second oldest

uh-huh and the oldest is twinkle toes

twinkle and what about the youngest

well her name is twinkle baby dwindle

baby

oh that's so sweet that's cool

when you were pretending to be a whale

did you think about the time that you

and i

went to the beach together oh oh yes i

did

i remembered how the ocean looked and

how the waves sounded

oh well you know i've been thinking

about our trip too

while i've been doing my painting of the

seascape oh and your seascape

was the reason that i brought this book

today oh yeah it's called

the big big c and it's written by martin

waddell

and illustrated by jennifer eaches oh

let's hear it let's hear it okay

mama said let's go

so we went out of the house

and into the dark and i saw

the moon we went

over the field and under the fence

and i saw the sea

in the moonlight waiting for me

mama said take off your shoes and socks

and i did and i ran

and mama ran oh we ran

and we ran straight through the puddles

and out

to see i went right in

to the shiny bit it was only me

in the big big sea

i splashed and i laughed and

mama came right after me and we paddled

out

deep in the water we got all wet

then we walked a bit more

by the edge of the sea and our feet made

big holes in the sand

far far away

right around the bay where the town

and the lights and the mountains

[Music]

we felt very small mama and me

we didn't go to the town we just

stayed for a while by the sea

and mama said to me remember this time

it's the way life should be

[Music]

oh i got cold and mama carried me

all the way back we sat by the fire

mama and me and a hot buttered toast

and i went to sleep on her knee

i'll always remember just mama

and me in the night that

we walked by the big

big c

wasn't that great that was a wonderful

story oh brittany sarah do you have any

favorite memories when i

went to massachusetts in new hampshire

and then i went to new hampshire so

i saw my best cousin oh yeah

um one time i went in the water

and my mom went she said it's cold it's

cold it's cold

well there's stuff in here

that help the little girl make the paper

princess

and the paper crown and the elephant to

ride on

and the little brother the little

brother that's right and the cozy little

bed

it has things like scissors and markers

and glue

and paint and yarns and you know

you can make anything that you can

imagine with all stuff

that's so cool go to it all right let's

do it

that rhymes yes

oh well here are our story picks for

today
