what's the story amigos this is kino

with some cool stories for today's story

time

[Music]

first we'll need a boy who likes

baseball but can't play very well yet

that's why i'm here in right field

watching the dandelions grow

then barry corbin tells us a tall

tale from the far west it was pug

slug and dug the thug and they were back

in the three to the wall

and find out why nobody can catch the

white cow

i'll tell you what said mr matthew

that cow is one tough dude

what's up huh nothing

hey why aren't you playing aren't these

your friends

well yeah but but what

well it's just that i don't want to be a

baseball player

i want to be a cowboy hmm well you can

be both there's a time for everything

well no i don't think so amara i got my

cowboy hat on here and i'm gonna go to

the story place cause

barry is gonna be there and he's

bringing over some cowboy books

wow well when is he coming oh in about

one hour

well you still have some time to play if

you want kino

well i'm not that good at baseball mara

i tried it a couple of times and i

didn't do that well

it takes time to learn how to play no

one starts out playing well

i'm good at soccer i know that's because

you practice a lot

you're also very good with your roller

blades yup yup

it's just baseball i'm no good at well

that's because you don't play it

you know to be good at any sport you

have to practice before you can play it

well

hmm you know what i have a book here

about a boy who plays baseball and he's

not very good at it yet

so they put him in the right field where

he doesn't have to catch and throw a lot

would you like to hear it oh sure you

i love books all right

this is playing right field by willie

saturday summers when i was a kid

we'd run to the school yard and here's

what we did

we'd pick out the captains and choose up

the teams

it was always a measure of my

self-esteem

because the strongest and fastest played

shortstop and first

the last ones they picked were the worst

i never needed to ask it was sealed

i just took up my place in right field

play and right field easy

you know you can be awkward

you can be slow that's why i'm here in

right field

watching the dandelions grow

right fields can be lonely and old

little leagues never have lefties that

pull i dream of the day they'd hit one

my way they never did but

still i would pray that i'd make a

fantastic catch on the run and

not lose the ball in the sun

then i'd awake from this long reverie

and pray that the fall never came not to

me

here in right field there's nothing to

know

you can be awkward and you can be slow

that's why i'm here in right field

watching the dandelions grow

sometimes i dream i was matthews or maze

hitting home runs and making great plays

but they were so graceful and they were

so

fast they never bad at last

hey you guys come on over here come on

over guys i want you guys to find out

what happens in this book yeah this is a

great book just gathering

see the pictures yeah come on nick

come on in oh

off in the distance the game's dragging

on there are strikes on the batter some

runners are on i don't know the inning

i've forgotten the score the whole team

is yelling and i don't know what for

suddenly everyone's looking at me

my mind has been wandering what could it

be

they point to the sky and i look up

above

and a baseball falls into my glove

here in a right field it's important to

know

you gotta know how to catch you gotta

know how to throw

that's why i'm here in right field

watching

the dandelions grow

great that was great

well you see kino in the book the boy

was not a very good player but he still

came out to play

well if he wasn't that good then how did

he make that catch

well it was almost by accident but the

next time the ball comes his way

he'll be ready well that's what happens

when you want to learn something

keep working at it you get better well

yeah maybe but but i saw these guys play

mara and they're really pretty good well

yes they're good

now but they weren't always good do you

guys remember when you didn't know how

to play

yeah yeah what happened um i didn't know

how to

bat or hit how about you nick

i know how to pitch or do anything gosh

and you're a really good pitcher how did

you learn how to pitch my dad taught me

dad jake nothing too

well how did you guys learn

your dad and practice and well keno what

do you think

you want to try baseball well

i don't know i i want to be a cowboy

hey i have an idea let's go back to the

story place maybe barry will be there

with his cowboy books huh

okay come on everybody let's go come on

you guys let's go

howdy folks hi mr clark

[Music]

wow well i thought would have some

friends here so

uh i brought along some cowboy hats for

everybody

oh cool wow there you go

there's another one and here's one for

you you can be the deputy sheriff

oh that's great uh did you bring some

cowboy books too

you bet i did all right what's this

it's just you've been playing baseball

oh they were playing baseball

i was just walking by thinking about

being a cowboy

and riding my horse in the wide open

country

and getting ready for some cool cowboy

books uh mr corbin i've been trying to

convince kino to give baseball a chance

you didn't want to play huh uh no

i didn't why not it's just that i

can't i'm not very well

i want to be a cowboy oh

man that's all right i brought along

some real good cowboy books for us whoa

you did

yeah how would you like to hear a real

big adventure story

yeah well come over here and sit down

come here and i'll read you a story

called

pug slug and dug the thug

ready ready go ahead once there was a

dog

a mean dog a flea

nipping tail tucking fang snarling bone

stealing dog once there was a cat

the cool cat a moon yelling alley roving

ear

missing dog ripping cat

once there was a boy a lone boy

a slow loping quick thinking barefoot

straw chewing boy

one hot day long about noon they all

crossed paths

the dry gulp saloon the dog

growled the cat

[Music]

and the boy just chewed on a straw

they just hunkered down to pass some

time when the sheriff moses

up to nail

slug and dug the thug

were bad guys wanted by the law

the dog slunkered up for a look at the

g*ng

he growled a low growl

and bared an old fang

the cat licked her paw stretched out a

claw

and the boy did nothing at all

before the three could turn around

a terrible blackened shadow

ground

it was pug slug and dug

the thug and they were back in the three

to the wall

pug was big with a snarly beard

slug was bigger with lips

it sneered and dug

the thug you can bet your jug was the

biggest of them all

he must have been nine feet tall

wow well the dog

cast tonight of the first bad guy

the cat made a move to the second the

third bad guy

that was doug the thug was his

the lone boy reckoned that mean old dog

took a leaping bug

he was aiming to nip his ear

one quick stride hug stepped aside

and the g*ng began to jeer

the cat circled round the bad guy

slug and sprang with a hair raisin

the slug leaned back and foiled his back

and the g*ng began to scowl

then big old dug he took

his stance his fingers started

twitching and his eyes began to dance

his yeller teeth opened in an ugly

yellow grin

all right boys let the fighting begin

well the dog looked at the cat and the

cat looked at the kid

the kid he set to thinking

and i'll tell you what he did

he felt the straw between his teeth and

tightened up his jaw

he stared up at the ceiling and he

spit that straw

the straw shop through the chandelier

which set its tip

flame whistling like an arrow past the

startled g*ng it came and

sister i ain't joking when i say it

landed smoking

in the middle of a cowboy poker game

[Music]

water yelled the cowboys as their cards

were turning black

so someone tossed the pickle barrel

clean across the shack the brine

from all that pickling once it really

started trickling

made for so much tickling that they

tossed the barrel back

the barrel took off flying and sailed

across the shop it landed on the handle

of a soaking soapy mop

the muppet started flipping and the

bucket started dipping and the g*ng

began

slipping and the slop

well the barrel kept on spinning till it

settled

pinning pug and the bucket kept

on rolling and went bowling over slug

and just like the boy was hoping all

that sloppy slimy soaping made it mighty

easy

roping dug the thug

oh man hey guys did you notice all the

things that had to happen

for the bad guys to get caught well

first the boy

shot his straw right through the flame

and then then

well what happened after that the straw

caught on fire and then um the cards

caught on fire

because of the straw right then what

there was a mop and then and then a

cowboy slipped

which one that one doug the thug he was

nine

feet tall and he was me too

yeah you know i just thought of

something

in the other book playing in right field

the boy catches the ball by accident

in this story the boy catches the

outlaws by accident

what do you mean by accident yeah

well i think it's by accident that he

captures them

oh no he must have really practiced to

be able to sh**t that straw through the

flame

it was all planned sure you know you got

to practice a whole lot to uh to uh to

do anything well you know like uh

oh you playing baseball or uh or

doing a doing a cowboy yo-yo

oh boy yo-yo califor yo-yo you're ah

whoa

cool yeah that trick with straw

i've done that many times when i was

confronted with the bad guy

oh boy being a cowboy sounds so

cool you know i'd catch the bad guys too

i'd show them

you know kino uh most time

cowboys uh dealt with cows not bad guys

that's where the name comes from

cowboy you never heard of a bad guy boy

did you well no

i guess not but you have heard of

cowgirls

right oh sure yeah you know talking

about

cowgirl i've got a book here about a

girl

who has to deal with a cow just like a

cowboy or a cow girl

would called hunting the white cow

story by trey seymour and the pictures

are drawn by wendy anderson halperin

yeah giddy up

somewhere north of priceville there's a

white cow

nobody can catch it used to be ours

but she went wild when she first

got loose mr matthew who helps daddy run

the farm

said let's go get a rope go catch that

buster so he and daddy put on their

overalls and feed

caps pulled on their old brown crusty

cow pie

boots and got into the orange pickup

truck to hunt the white

cow can i come

i asked but daddy said no

he'd be back in a few minutes i woke up

when they came

stomping up the porch around midnight mr

matthew had mud all up

down one side daddy lost his feed cap

mama plucked the leaves out of his hair

they didn't catch the white cow

i tell you what said mr matthew

that cow is one tough dude

i always said he's smart said daddy

smartest cow in the county

that cow was so smart she kept head for

weeks

the next we heard of her was when ollie

jarbo who runs the store

called on the phone and said y'all's

white

cow is in wilson's tobacco patch

this time daddy called up uncle bill and

uncle bob

to help hunt the white cow they drove up

with their overalls

feed caps the cow pie boots already on

and ready to go

can i come i asked but uncle bill said

it'd only take him half an

hour i'll believe that when i see it

said mama they missed dinner

daddy had so many stick tights stuck to

him he looked plum green

uncle bob groaned and rubbed his legs

where he'd run through a patch of saw

briars

all four smell like it rolled in tobacco

i'll tell you what said mr matthew

that cow is one tough dude and smart

said daddy smartest cow in the county

and fat i reckon said uncle bill

lord what a cow you always had a pretty

calf

said uncle bob you got to find

cow there if you can ever catch her

said mama we never did see the white cow

again for a month

but then ollie jarbo called and said

y'all cow is out in horton's cornfield

eating like an

old sow daddy took no chances he called

papaw to come help me

and mr matthew and uncle bill and uncle

bob

hunt the white cow papa wore the

crustiest cow

pie boots i ever saw can i come

i asked pat paul said they'd only be

gone an hour and a half

they had a secret weapon

papaw was the best cow caller in

southern kentucky

he'd holler soon so

[Music]

every cow for miles would moo

and follow him like a dog and get the

white cow for sure

they didn't catch the white cow

mama had to help bring out daddy from

falling in the creek

mr matthews shook the corn out of his

boots

uncle bob picked dirt out of his teeth

with a toothpick

and papa and bill took turns rubbing

each other's knees

i tell you what said mr matthew

that cow is one tough dude

and smart said daddy and

fat i reckon said uncle bill

she always had the pretty calf i

recollect

said uncle bob and the sweetest milk you

ever

tasted that paul said

that cow has never been melted in her

life

said mama nobody paid her any mind

we never did see that cow again until i

saw him myself

i'd spent the day in the woods and just

about dusk i spied her in the top

pasture stalked up quiet like

i could hear her tearing up grass and

bunching it into a cud

and breathing heavy like cows do and

switching her tails

warm air i could almost touch her

when she looked right at me

she didn't run she let me lead her by

the old rope around her neck

until we got to the woods then she

stopped

cal i said i ain't letting go of this

rope

she looked at me as if to say i ain't

going no farther

well i wasn't about to let go of the

famous white cow

you ain't so smart i said daddy will

come looking for me

and see that i caught you and bragged on

me something awful

i waited a while got dark

waited a while more then i got sleepy

and i leaned up against the stump with

rope tied around my

wrist so the old cow couldn't go

anywhere

[Music]

well guess what

i didn't catch the white cow daddy found

me asleep by the stump

but that old cow had wrapped the rope

around the tree and broken it off

when i got home everybody had something

to say

i tell you what mr matthew said

that cow is one tough dude

and smart said daddy and fat

i reckon said uncle bill you always had

a pretty

calf said uncle bob and the sweetest

milk you

ever tasted said papaw

i didn't say anything but i did keep a

white cow's rope

held up my pants ever since

papa's gonna teach me cow calling

watch out white cow

watch out

that's then oh that was great now

who's the bad guy in that story is there

a bad guy in there

hmm there's not a cow the cow

that's what i was wondering do you think

the cow is a bad guy

no it's just a cow yeah i'd say the cow

was smart before she was bad yeah the

smartest cow in the whole county

and let me tell you something that

cowgirl is not

gonna give up she's gonna keep after

that cow until she gets her isn't she

yeah and she'll keep practicing her cow

calling too

hmm kino

oh what are you thinking practicing

i was thinking about practicing

you know maybe i'll give baseball

another try

yahoo keno what do you guys think do you

think he should

yeah yeah yeah well

i'll tell you what why don't y'all go

play now

i've got to go and uh round up a few

doggies

monsters it's a good story and it has

beautiful illustrations

my second story pick is the cowboy and

the black eyed pea

how can you tell who a real cowboy is

well have him ride the range with the

black-eyed p under a saddle and see what

happens
