time

today in this special story time we'll

hear

charles dutton read us the tale of a

stinky moose

he turned green yellow then green again

his toes curled and he collapsed in a

dead

faint then

john ritter reads us the adventures of a

boy and his unwanted pet elephant

even though alistar got up early the

elephant got up earlier

[Music]

and for our last story jamie lee curtis

reads us her book

when i was little when i was little i

made up words like

scooby-doo now i make up

hello anybody here

hello well this has to be the right

place lots of books

at least i hope it is cause i've been

looking forward to a story time party

well let's see i've got the right day

oh oh i got it hey i'm i'm just a little

early nobody's here yet

well i think i'll just go and make

myself comfortable

hey well i remember this book

my mom used to read it to me cheese and

crackers

hey hey shut and go bop the bop knights

and dragons he

eat cats and dogs meow wolf painted

noodles

hey kino oh charles how's it going no

it's going all right

hey did you make this invitation to a

story time party

oh i sure did and i wrote it too and i

drew the picture too

well it's good i guess i'm just a little

early you guessed right amigo

the party's later but i'm getting ready

anyway i'm in a reading party kind of

mood

cheese and crackers hey hey hey that's a

catchy beat you got there kino hey

hey hey oh you don't have to leave do

you

everybody should be here pretty soon i

mean can you stick around

sure i've been looking forward to this

party and i

even brought one of my favorite picture

books

oh you did huh see you know what i'm

thinking and what well since you're here

and well since the party's not till

later could you read me that story

well no problem here we go

mucky moose by jonathan allen okay

in the tall dark forest of the north

there lived a moose his name was mucky

he was called mucky because he was

mucky the muckiest smelliest moose

that ever lived now there was one

muddy swamp in which every moose liked

to wallow

but some parts weren't much too smelly

and sludgy

for most moose these were mucky's

favorite wallowing places

mucky was so smelly that he attracted

flies from miles away they buzzed around

his head in a big cloud

birds perched on his antlers and snapped

up the flies

while frogs sat on monkey's nose and

caught flies too mucky was so

smelly that when he walked through the

forest

all the other animals kept out of his

way

all except the skunks that is as

everyone knows

skunks smell terrible but no skunk was

even half as smelly as mucky whenever

skunks met monkey they were so impressed

by his powerful smell

that they gave him a round of applause

[Laughter]

in the forest there were lots

of wolves everyone knows that

wolves sometimes eat moose

when the biggest wolf in the forest

heard about mucky

the largest moose in the forest he

decided

to eat him for dinner i

am the biggest wolf in the forest and

i'm

extra hungry so i'm going to eat the

biggest

moose in the forest he declared

oh one morning as mucky was walking back

from his daily smelly wallow

a cloud of flies buzzing around him a

line of birds on each antler

a huge wolf stepped out in front of him

i'm going to eat you for my dinner he

snarled

i just thought you might like to know

well all interesting replied monkey

but i'm afraid that doesn't fit in with

my plans

was furious no one had ever dared speak

to him like that

he drew himself up to spring that monkey

then

suddenly the wind changed direction

and blew monkey's horrible smell right

at him

wolves have very sensitive noses

to a wolf mucky smell was positively

dangerous the wolf let out a sort of

choking noise

and stopped in his tracks he turned

green

yellow and then green again his toes

curled and he collapsed

in a dead faint

[Music]

not hungry anymore huh chuckled mucky as

he continued on his way

when the wolf recovered he was very

angry indeed i'll get that

moose he growled a few days

later mucky was strolling through the

forest when the wolf

once more stepped out in front of him

this time he had a clothes

peg in his nose to protect him from the

moose's dangerous smell

i'm going to eat you for bright dinner

he cried as best he could

you're going to do what a*s monkey

i'm going to eat you for my dimmer

yelled the wolf

with his voice shaking with anger well

i'm sorry but i can't understand a word

you're saying

with that thing on your nose mucky

replied

the wolf sputtered then snatched the peg

off his nose

i said i'm going to eat you foreign

as lucky smell hit him the wolf turned

green

then yellow his ears curled up and his

tail

bent like a corkscrew then his legs

crossed and he fell sideways in a faint

even more deadly than before

oh dear oh dear

said mucky as he stepped over him and

continued his stroll through the forest

poor wolfy's been taking you what a

shame

it took the wolf a week to recover

he was beside himself with anger

oh sort out that smelly

monster of a moose he swore

as he was walking back from his daily

wallow

monkey was surprised to see the wolf

step out in front of him again

this time wearing a gas mask

he cried in a muffled voice got you now

mucky moose prepare to be my dinner

and about time too i'd say

the wolf drew himself up to his full

height ready to spring

well i'm sorry mr wolf

said monkey but how are you going to

bite me with that mask on

the wolf hadn't thought of that little

detail

thinking not his strong point

[Music]

he yelled in frustration tearing the gas

mask from his face

smell or no smell i'm going to eat you

now

with a roar he leaped that mucky fangs

beard when the smell hit him this time

he turned not only green

then yellow but purple too his eyes

crossed his knees knocked together

his tail revolved at high speed finally

his legs buckled and he fell sideways in

a dead

fate for the third time

mucky shrugged and shaking his head

stepped over the wolves body and

continued on his way

the wolf did not bother mucky again

after that he left the forest

forever never to return

changing his wicked ways he went to the

nearest

city to become a guide dog

for the blind the other wolves

sensibly kept away from monkey who just

carried on as he always had

wallowing happily in the smelliest parts

of the swamp he could find

and talking to his friends the birds

frogs and skunks

[Music]

oh boy you are a very very very good

reader charles

well thank you kino you know coming from

you

that's a real compliment oh yep

i know about good reading cause i've had

lots and lots of stories reading me here

at story time

what else do you guys do here well

that's what we do here at story time

no fancy tricks no gizmos or gadgets

just

good old stories well that's good i've

always liked stories ever since i was a

little guy like you oh wow well i'm not

so little

i'm in the second grade you know oh well

and you're pretty big then

oh hi oh hi lucy this is my friend

charles

i invited him to the party but he's here

a little early so he read me a story

pleased to meet you charles nice to meet

you which story did you read

this one oh it's funny too charles is a

good reader

he does the voices and all plus and this

is the most important thing

he picked a really good book oh hey

what's that you brought lucy

oh oh this it's a sketch that i'm making

of john ritter

remember when he stopped by with his son

tyler and read alastair's elephant

oh sure i remember that's another good

book

and i'm going to read alistair's

elephant by marilyn saddler illustrated

by roger bowlen

okay alistair griddle was a very busy

boy

he had no time for nonsense

he worked very hard at school when he

knew the answer to a question

he would raise both his hands

he was very neat and tidy he cleaned his

room every night and slept

on top of his covers alistair

also found time to play he was very

careful to choose games that exercised

his mind

as well as his body

every saturday alistair went to the zoo

because that was the day they offered a

special admission rate for children

under 10.

alistair was very thrifty too on

saturday when alistair was going to the

zoo it threatened to rain so

alistair took an umbrella now when he

got to the zoo

he decided which animals he most wanted

to see then he studied the zoo

map he walked quickly and stopped only

once for a chocolate bar too small

to spoil his dinner good he

set out for home only after he had

thanked the zookeeper for a most

enjoyable afternoon

see there he's leaving the zoo now

when it began to rain alistair was glad

he had taken his umbrella

he was nearly home when he realized

something quite

surprising he was being followed by

and

the plot thickens the zookeeper will be

very worried about you cried alistar

you must go back to the zoo but the

elephant

wouldn't go alistair was late for dinner

so there was nothing he could do but

let the elephant follow him home

you can't keep him shouted his mother

from the window

alistair didn't want to he he didn't

have time for a pet

so he called the zookeeper and the

zookeeper checked his records

there was a hippopotamus missing but not

an elephant

are you sure it's not a hippo ask the

zookeeper alistair was certain

well there was nothing alistar could do

but eat his dinner and hope that the

elephant would leave

he was so upset he couldn't eat his

favorite vegetable

the elephant didn't leave that night nor

any night that week alistair had a very

hard time sleeping with the elephant

at his window and even though aleister

got up early the elephant

got up earlier

[Music]

alistair didn't have any privacy he had

to dress in the cupboard

the elephant followed him to school and

caused so much excitement that everyone

had to be sent home

alistair did not get to take the

arithmetic test he'd studied so hard for

the elephant ate all of aleister's house

plants as well as his science book

and his stamp collection

alistar tried to teach the elephant how

to behave the elephant did get a little

better and even gave alistar

some privacy on school days the elephant

learned

to stay at home on saturday however

alistair took the elephant back to the

zoo he just

didn't have time for an elephant every

day of the week

the zookeeper checked his records again

and

found a mistake he had been missing an

elephant after all

he thanked alistair very much the

elephant

was very sad alistair was a little sad

too but he promised the elephant

he would visit every saturday then

alistair left for home it had been a

busier week than usual

and at times it had been fun but he was

very happy

to be going home to his quiet

tidy room where at last

he could get some work done

[Music]

and guess what happens kids

now he's got more problems and they're

taller

[Music]

oh good drawing lucy another

funny book the whole story could start

over again

with alistair and the giraffe huh yeah

and john makes the book even funnier oh

he does he

he really acts it out doesn't he and did

you notice how he slaps his forehead

when the zookeeper realizes that he's

missing an elephant

oh yeah yeah i remember he goes

hey are you you okay buddy brother yeah

gee i better practice that phew

hi everybody oh hi mara

i have some photographs to show you oh

well let's see him huh

i am making a scrapbook of photographs

from story time and i want to have it

ready for the party

i'm almost done oh cool

let's see the pictures okay all right

ah oh hey wait a minute i know all those

people

well sure you do they've all read here

at story time

then elmer lay down and rolled all over

on the berries he rubbed this way

and he rubbed that way

right goldilocks had not put the hard

cushion straight when she rose from the

chair of the great huge bear

somebody has been sitting in my chair

said the great huge bear in his great

ruff-ruff voice

the last curtain rises and before our

eyes

there is lady bugatti in her

orange gown with black dots all around

she was in the wings all the time

natalie says i can't be peter pan

because i'm black

she said ma looked angry

but before she could speak nana said

it seems that natalie is another one who

don't know nothing

you can be anything you want grace if

you put your mind to it

a jew the force of the sneeze shot them

in up into the sky

and scattered the animals in all

directions

wow i love those stories all of them

well i have a couple of other favorites

i think you'll remember

well that's john goodman all right hey

which story did he read oh

he r*ped a little polar bear

when it was time to go to sleep lars's

father said

break a big pile of snow to protect

yourself from the wind like i do

a wires was proud of this pile but he

was also very tired

he quickly fell asleep just like his

father

but during the night the ice began to

crack

the piece where lars was lying broke

off when mars woke up

it was morning he was all alone in the

middle of the sea

it was getting warmer and warmer and the

piece of ice

and larza's pile of snow were getting

smaller

and smaller when the ice was almost

completely melted

lars saw a big barrel drifting by

luckily

lars was able to reach the barrel and

climb on top of it

then a storm began to rage

as lars clung to his bobbing barrel he

missed his father and his pile of snow

more and more

[Music]

after the storm lars drifted on the sea

for a long time

at last he saw land but he couldn't see

any snow or ice

almost everything was green and the sun

was very warm

lars carefully slid off the barrel and

stepped

onto the beach

the beach was hot and yellow it burned

larza's paws

he ran to a river nearby but just as he

was about to plunge in

a very big tan animal sprung out of the

water

[Music]

oh hey i know that book and that's not

the whole story

oh i know that was just a quick snapshot

i have

lots more pictures to show you oh okay

you know john goodman looks like he

really

enjoyed that story oh he did we had a

great time

he told me he came because his daughter

wanted him to read the kino

and he ended up having even more fun

than he expected

oh right cause i'm a fun guy

well you know grown-ups know that

children love to be read to but

sometimes we forget that it's really fun

for us too

you know my favorite part was the

cuddling

when my mom and dad read to me i felt

like i was the center of the world

another one of the thrills of reading

the children is that it gives you the

license to be

silly i want this to be silly

i got one of those wow cheese and

crackers

hey you know i use my license to be

silly to come up with the voices for my

characters

oh yeah those were so great

oh kinokino do you remember this picture

the name of the book i'm gonna read is

when i was little

a four-year-old memoir of her youth

a baby

when i was little i cried a lot

now i can wear it in a ponytail or

braids

when i was little i didn't get to eat

or paint my toenails bubble gum pink

when i was little i spilled a lot

my mom says i was a handful now

i'm helpful

when i was little i rode in a baby car

seat

now i ride like a grown-up and wave at

policemen

when i was little i went to mommy and me

now i go to nursery school and i have

teachers and cubbies and nap time

and secrets

when i was little i didn't understand

timeouts

now i do but i don't like them

when i was little i made up words like

scooby-doo

now i make up songs

when i was little i swam in the pool

with boys

i still do but now we wear bathing suits

but we don't wear floaties when i was

little

the slide at the park was so big

now it's smaller but i still like my

granny to wait at the bottom for me

when i was little i ate goo and yucky

stuff

now i eat pizza and noodles

and fruit and cheetos

when i was little i had two teeth now

i have lots and i know how to brush them

when i was little i slept in a zoo

now i sleep in a big bed and get to play

monkey

when i was little i kissed my mom and

dad good night every night

i still do but only after they each read

me a book

and we play tickled t*rture do you know

what tickle t*rture is

this that tickle t*rture

when i was little i didn't know what a

family was

when i was little i didn't know what

dreams were when i was little

i didn't know who i was

now i do

i like that story it makes me remember

all the games that i used to play when i

was a kid

oh yup yup i like to pretend that what's

happening in the story

is happening to me of course i don't

pretend that i'm

little because you're in the second

grade right

oh right you are whoa

hey kids oh it looks like the rest of

the guests are arriving for the

storytime party

yeah cool it's a story reading party hey

hey cats and dogs

[Laughter]

well let's see what books everybody

brought oh yeah let's read another story

okay charles well sure thing you must

really like stories kino

or was it my reading that did it oh it's

both it's both

letting me get in here kids

here at story time we celebrate reading

our goal is to help children develop a

love for reading and for all the magic

that can be found

in books it's been said that the most

important thing we can do to prepare our

children

for success in reading is to read aloud

to them

story time is not intended to replace

your reading to your child

television can't do that but story time

can help

and don't be surprised if after watching

story time a few weeks

your child's interest in books grows

even more

read the children the benefits will last

a lifetime
