and the story that we have here today is
a very interesting one it's about
a family from the appalachian mountains
and when i read it you're going to hear
how they speak well how do they speak
they speak with their mouths right
well no they speak a little differently
they say dogs are scratching
and tomcat is a lickin that means like
this lickin
and all of this happens until knock
knock knock
no what knock knock who's there
ken ken who can you please read the
story
yes i can read the story but there's a
part for all of you in the story
whenever i say possum come a knocking at
the door you say it too
did you write this story no it was
written by
nancy van laan did you do it to pictures
no
pictures by george booth you didn't
write it no you didn't draw it nope
so what do you do i read and she did
okay now it starts with your sentence
are you ready yeah
possum comma knocking at the door at the
door
again knocking
cooking in the kitchen making taters
when a possum cover knocking out
door this was tossing baby while pappy
was a whitland when
a possum come a knocking at the door
brother
was untangling all the tiny lines
for fishing while sis was tossing baby
and pappy was a woodland
and paul was busy fixing and ma was busy
cooking
and granny was a knitting when a possum
come a knocking at the door
dog was a twitching and a
scratching in the corner when
a possum
knocking at the door what's that
sis said don't know brother said watch
that
paul said don't know granny said but
that cat
she said that cat ought to go then the
dog started sniffing in a porn and a
growling
while the cat tail of twitching was a
hissing
and a howl in making granny stop a
knitting and pappy stop a whitland and
babies start
fussing sister and brother start cussing
cause a little old possum was a knocking
at the door
what's that granny said don't know papi
said
what's that ma said don't know pa said
then i quickly crossed the floor
and i peeked under the door
it's a possum come on knocking on the
door i said
it's a possum come on knocking on the
door
then brother came a leaping and sis came
a running and baby came a crawling
and dogs started howling and poppy was a
chuckling
and granny's eyes was twinkling as ma
followed tar to the door
now hush passing now hush
ma said and slowly pop
up the door now you all stop you're
hollering and you're fussing in your
cousin
cause there's nothing that's a knocking
at the door no
possum puppy said no possum
paw said no possum granny said
no person ma said and then we all
started doing like before
granny was a sit and while pappy was a
wittling ma was a cooking while paw was
a fixin
brother was untangling while sis was
tossing baby
dog was a scratchin while tomcat
was a licking
and i was just a sitting and a looking
out the window when i saw
what i saw scoot up the old oak tree
a possum was a scootin and a scramblin
and a danglin that possum that was
knockin
made a fool out of me
oh boy that was cool huh thanks sherry

[Music]
good idea later at the story place
this time it's not a possum it's a paul
hey everybody how are you kino invited
me to
come over and read you guys some stories
oh paul come join the story fiesta
all right all right i'll be right there
oh i
am so excited you'll love this
paul did you bring a favorite book i
brought two two of my favorite books
one of them is about uh this elephant
who's uh
red green purple orange pink
i got it i like it pink yellow white
all the colors red orange all right
this the name of the elephant is elmer
and he was colored and pictured and the
words were by a guy named david mckee
and i think it's a wonderful story okay
here it goes
there once was a herd of elephants
elephants young elephants old elephants
short
elephants tall elephants thin
they were all different
all were happy and almost all were the
same color
almost i say because elmer
was not elephant color he was patchwork
he was yellow and red and pink and
purple
and blue and orange and white
it was elmer who kept the other
elephants happy
their games and jokes were always his
idea
if an elephant was laughing the cause
was usually elder but elmer himself
wasn't happy
whoever heard of a patchwork
elephant he thought no wonder they
laughed at me
one morning just as the others were
waking up
elmer slipped away as he walked through
the jungle
elmer met other animals the other animal
said
good morning elmer that's hot that's how
the animals thought
after a long walk elmer found what he
was looking for
a large bush covered with elephant
colored berries
elmer caught a hold of the bush and he
shook it until the berries all fell
on the ground then elmer laid down
and rolled all over on the berries he
rubbed this way
and he rubbed that way
right he picked up bunches of berries
and rubbed himself
all over until he was covered with berry
juice
when he had finished there wasn't a sign
of any yellow or orange
or red or pink or purple or blue or
green or black or
white elmer looked like
any other elephant
on his way back through the jungle elmer
passed the other animals
good morning elephant they said
when elmer rejoined the herd none of the
other
elephants noticed him see i can't tell
which one it is right there
nope but he's in there as he stood there
elmer felt that
something was wrong but what what was
wrong
he looked around the same old jungle
it was the same old blue sky same old
rain clouds same old elephants
the other elephants were standing
absolutely still
they were quiet they were very serious
elmer had never seen them so serious
before you know
it made him want to laugh finally he
couldn't bear it any longer
he lifted his trunk at the top of his
voice
and he went
[Laughter]
the other elephants jumped and surprised
elmer
was helpless with the laughter the
others
began to laugh too they were all
laughing they're going
ha too bad
elver isn't here to share the fun they
said laughing harder and
and harder and then the rain cloud
bursted when the rain fell
on elmer his patchwork started to show
again
you see it you see what's happening do
you see you see the water what it's
doing
oh elmer gasp an old elephant
elmer was washed back to normal you know
you played some good
jokes but this has been the biggest
laugh of all what would we do without
you
you know what we must celebrate this day
every year
said another elephant yeah the day of
elmer's best
joke all of us elephants will decorate
ourselves in honor
of him said a third elephant then elmer
will
decorate himself elephant color
and one day each year the elephants
colored themselves
yellow and orange and red
and pink and white and white and green
and blue
and what else red orange red orange
yellow yellow anybody over here
okay we'll take out all those colors and
they would have a parade
so if you happen to see an elephant on
elmer's day parade who is just an
ordinary elephant color
[Music]
you will know it has to be
[Music]
and that's my story oh i like that story
hey how about another story paul hey
keno i just happen to have
a great story a story that i could
relate with
because it's called the abuela can we
all say it
now that means grandma in spanish and
this story was written
by a gentleman named arthur dorros and
all the beautiful pictures that you're
gonna see
were by elisa clavin okay are we
ready yeah yeah all right
abuela takes me on the bus we go
all around the city you see them hopping
on the bus there okay
and try to picture what city they're in
abuela is my
grandma she's my mother's mother abuela
you see abuela means grandma in spanish
see
abuela speaks spanish because well
that's what people spoke where she grew
up
before she came to this country abuela
and i
are always going to places today we're
going to the park
el parque es muy lindo
says abuela i know what she means
i think the park is beautiful too pantos
pajaros abuela says
as a flock of bird surrounds us so many
birds
they're picking up the bread we brought
what if they pick me up says a little
girl and carried me
high above the park what if i could fly
i will i would wonder where i was
swooping like a bird i called to her
then she'd see me flying rosalba the
bird
rosanba el pajaro pena abuela
come abuela i'd say
awena would reply as she leaped into the
sky
with her skirt flapping in the wind
we would fly all over the city midah
meet a well i would say pointing and i
looked as if we
soared over parks and streets
dogs and people we waved to the people
waiting for the bus buenos dias
we'd say buenos dias good morning
they'd call up to us we fly over
factories
and trains and glide close to the sea
we'd say we'd almost touch the tops of
the waves
abuela's skirt would be a sail she would
race with the sailboats
i'll bet she'd win too we'd fly to where
the ships are docked
and watch people unload fruits from
lands where abuela grew up
mangoes bananas papayas
you see those are all spanish words and
so
are rodeo patio
amburo but the way i pronounce them is
rodeo
patio iburu and maybe
we'd see a cousin of abuelas hooking
boxes of fruit
to the crane we saw her cousin daniel
once
unloading and loading ships
out past the boats in the harbor we'd
see the statue of liberty
me gusta abuela would say abuela really
likes her
i do too we would circle around
liberty's head and
wave to the people visiting her that
would remind abuela when she first came
to this country
vamos alero puerto she say she
take me to the airport where the planes
at first brother landed
abuela would tell me we'd have to be
very careful
as we went for a short ride
then we could fly to theo pablos
and tia elisa store si pablo is my
uncle my tio and elisa is my aunt
my tia they'd be surprised when we flew
in
but they'd offer us a cool limonada you
see flying
is hard work
abuela would say she wants to fly more
i want to fly more too we could fly to
las nubis
the clouds one looks like a cat
agato one looks like a bear unoso
one looks like a chair una sia
abuela would say she wants to rest a
moment
we would rest in our chairs and abuela
would hold me in her arms
with the whole sky as our house
nuestra casa our house imagine the whole
sky
we'd be as high as airplanes balloons
and birds
and higher than the tall buildings
downtown but we'd fly there too
to look around we could find a building
where my father works
hola papa i'd say as i wait
and abuela would do a flip just for fun
as we pass by the windows
mira i hear abuela say look she's
telling me
i do look and we are back in the park
we are walking by the lake abuela
probably wants to go for a boat ride
she says she wants us to go for another
adventure
that's just one of the things i love
about my abuela
she likes adventures abuela takes my
hand
vamanos she says let's go
[Music]
that's the abuela let me ask you
you ready how did they go around to all
these places
no imagination imagination
where where does imagination take place
boys and girls
people from your head in our heads right
in here
oh oh i get it so so if i
use my imagination when i see a boat on
the water
all i have to do is say what if what if
i could float for hours
and then i just pretend that's right
that's right boys and girls
all you need is your imagination huh
gee that sounds like uh a game we could
play right now
watch what if we went on a picture book
visit
huh yeah yeah are you all ready
yeah hey it's cloris reading
the hungry thing to her grandkids
they look like they're in the kitchen
one
morning a hungry thing came to town
he sat on his tail he pointed to a sign
around his neck
that said feed me
[Music]
the town's people gathered around to see
the hungry thing
what would you like to eat ask the
town's townspeople
man cakes answered the hungry thing
man cakes ask the townspeople how do you
eat them what can they
be why dear me
said a wise man schmann cakes that's
plain or a small kind of
chicken that falls with the rain
of course said a cook schmann cakes i've
read are better to eat when you stand on
your head
i think said a little boy you're all
very silly man cakes sound like
fan cakes sound like
pancakes to me
so the towns people gave the hungry
things some
pancakes the hungry thing ate them all
up the hungry thing pointed to a sign
that said
feed me what would you like to eat
ask the town's people tickles answered
the hungry thing
tickles cried the town's people how do
you eat them what can they be
why dear me said the wise man tickles
you know
are curly tailed hot dogs that grow in a
row
of course said the cook tickles taste
yummy and you giggle and laugh with ten
in your tummy
i think so the little boy it's all very
clear
tickle sounds like sickle sounds like
pickles to me and they gave the hungry
thing some
people the hungry thing ate them all
up he's under fed
have some bread said a lady dressed in
red
it seems to me he'd like some tea said a
fellow up a tree
a bit of rice might be nice said a baby
sucking ice
the hungry thing just shook his head and
pointed to his sign that said
feed me the townspeople tried again what
would you like to eat
ask the town's people fried loaf
answered the hungry thick feet loaf
cried the townspeople how do you eat it
what can it be
the wise man feet loaf let's see um
it's a kind of um shoe pudding that
grows in a tree
of course said the cook feet loaf tastes
sweet
and it's eaten by kings when they dine
in bare feet
i think said the little boy you ought to
know feet loaf
sounds like beet loaf sounds
like meatloaf to me
that's right so the townspeople gave the
hungry thing some meatloaf
the hungry thing ate it all up he again
pointed to his sign that said
feed me what would you like to eat this
time at the town's people
cookies cried the hungry hookies
said the townspeople how do you eat them
what can they be
hookies said the wise men are known in
far lands
as a special spaghetti to eat
holding hands cookie said the cook are a
party dish to serve to a guest
if he isn't a fish i think said the
little boy
it's all very simple hookies sound like
lookies sound like cookies
to me that's right the townspeople gave
the hungry thing some and he ate them
all up then he got to his feet he smiled
he patted his mouth on a line of laundry
he turned around three times
is it true he's all through asked a lady
dressed in blue
let's all try to say goodbye said a man
with a can
come again said some men but the hungry
thing just sat
down again and he pointed to his sign
that said
feed me what do you want to eat that's
the town's people
golly pops said the hungry golly pops
cried the townspeople
how do you eat them what can they be
oh dear me said the wise man golly pops
are new they are cereal shaped like
toys and sugar coated too children
said the cook buy them by the dozens and
trade off the box tops with classmates
and cousins
i think said the boy you all ought to
hear gollipops sound like
dolly pops sound like
lollipops to me
so the townspeople gave the hungry thing
some lollipops
the hungry thing ate them all up and he
pointed to his sign again
oh please said the townspeople
we've been here all day isn't there a
quicker way i think said the boy that
there is
have some noodles the little boy asked
the hungry thing
the hungry thing shook his head oh
excuse me are you
i meant to say foodles the hungry thing
smiled and ate them all up
just look said the cook let's all
try was the cry so they all got dizzy
have some smello they gave him
jello have some bread they gave him some
bread
have a banana they gave a banana the
hungry thing
eight and eight he looked very full
is there anything more we can give you
the townspeople wanted to know
the hungry thing politely covered a
hiccup he thought for a while then
broof with a smacker he said
boop with us macro boop with a smacker
what is that the townspeople ask
the boy whispered to the wise man the
wise man whispered took a cook
and the cook gave the hungry thing
soup with a cr*cker
the hungry thing ate them all up he
smiled
he got to his feet he wiped his mouth on
the cook's hat
just as he left he turned the sign
around
in big letters it said
thank you
well thank you all for coming today
