Narrator: 260 miles
northeast of Dutch harbor,

The Time Bandit is racing to
close out the king crab season.

We're on our fourth trip.

If we get 40s and 50s,
I'm happier than hell.

But I think we'll get
some real good numbers

Down here to stand by.

Whoo!
You guys are bad-a*s!

The "short timers," now.
That's what they call us.

Narrator: A huge storm
is bearing down from the west,

And it could shut them down.

But if Johnathan's
last string pays off,

They're heading home.

We got it made in the shade,
pretty much.

We don't know yet.
Can't think that far ahead.

It's crab fishing.

And we are gonna check
the first pot,

And the thing
about the first pot

Is whatever that pot has,

The rest of them
are probably gonna have that.

So, if it's blank,

Then the rest of them
are probably gonna be blank.

Man:
Whoo! Hey! Come on!

There it goes.

Oh, yeah.
Nice big boys.

Oh, yeah!

We'll take it.
Probably about 45 there.

[ indistinct shouting ]

Get that crab
on top of the pot!

[ laughter ]

Right on!

Narrator:
The Hillstrands' secret grounds

have paid off all season long.

This is a great-looking pot.

It's even looking better 'cause
I know it's our last trip,

And numbers like this
means it's a shorter trip.

Now, Johnathan needs
to maintain a 21 average...

...and catch it quickly.

Whoo!

Just when things
were going smoothly...

[ thud ]

Hey, Mike, did you feel that?

[ clanging ]

Think we got something
in the wheel.

...The Time Bandit is dragging

across the ocean bottom.

Johnathan:
Uh-oh. Not good.

Like, when we set,
there was near,

Then I come back
four days later,

And there's a [bleep]
flighting air buoy.

Narrator:
The momentary distraction

has the Time Bandit
tangled in another boat's gear.

I traced the Wizard going
right up one of my strings,

Pot for pot.

Oh, I set this gear
six [bleep] days ago, Keith.

And I don't have time
to play your [bleep] games.

I could care less about his gear.

I could care less where he's fishing.

I pulled my pot,

Sucked his pot underneath my boat,

And his buoys came up
in right by my prop.

He put it in gear,
and it sucked it right in.

That's what happens
when they cork you off, man.

We were just pulling our pot.
We freed one pot.

We had one in our rudder.

Stupid [bleep]

[bleep] you!

Now I'm done talking about that.

Fourtner:
That's the kind of person

you need to play "pin the tail

Johnathan: You don't want to
have line in your wheel.

Then it gets
in your cutlass bearing...

[bleep] everything all up.

It's not a good thing.

It disappeared.
Where'd it go?

Underneath the water.

There it is.

It came free!

Came free!
It came free.

Did it pop free?
Yeah.

We still got our props and
chaffs, and everybody's happy.

It's a good thing
that pot came out of our wheel

'cause then we'd have to
maybe go in there

And dive and cut it all out.

That's why you don't
set your pot that close

To somebody else's pot,
'cause that happens.

Anyway...Casualties at w*r.

It sucks.

I don't know whose pot it was,
but we ran somebody's pot over.

It wasn't ours.
I know that.

So that's all
that matters, really.

Out here, it happens, man.

Now, back to business.

Narrator:

The Northwestern
arrives in Dutch harbor

To off-load
their final 123,000 pounds

of red king crab quota.

Well, this is it for 2009...

King crab season.

That's a good sign, when they're
crawling out of the tank.

Edgar:
The final off-load, yes.

We are in the process of
delivering our last bit of crab.

And everybody's wondering
what's gonna happen,

Whether we're going blue-crab
or not.

Nobody really knows yet.

Somebody knows,
but somebody's not sharing it.

Narrator:
Captain Sig has an opportunity

to squeeze out
another fistful of pennies

by fishing a rare,
shallow-water king crab

That's blue in color.

Sig: If there's a fishery open
that we can partake in,

We should do that.

Blue crab's gonna start here,

And we want to go up
and give that a try.

I don't suspect it's gonna
be the biggest moneymaker,

But that's something that
if I can do, I'm gonna do it.

I want to go home.
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go!

Edgar: We're not going home.
We're going to St. Matthew.

That's not what he said.

Oh [bleep]

That's not what he said.
[ laughs ]

Right now,
it'd be great to take a break.

It'd be nice to take a day or
two off and have the guys relax,

But that's not the case.

Narrator:
Sig's decision is final.

Blue crab, it is.

You'd think these guys would
be jumping-up-and-down happy.

Blue crab! Yeah!
Blue crab!

[bleep] blue crab.

We're here to make money.
They can thank me later.

We're about to
go embark on blue crab.

I got a feeling,
by the time we're done,

If you added up
all the hours I put in

To go do this blue crab,

A fry cook
at your family restaurant

Probably makes more money.

I'm disappointed
I can't go home tomorrow.

Doesn't sound like it's gonna
be an awesome experience,

But it's definitely gonna
be experience that I need.

Bradley: This is the part
about being solid to your boat

And being a good crew member,

Sticking it out
through thick and thin,

Win, lose, or draw.

Narrator:
As dawn breaks...

Captain Sig hatches a new plan.

You know how we were talking
we don't have a real plan "b,"

I mean, if I take off?

I just want to see, like,
if you were to run the boat

Or, basically, set the gear

To kind of see how you would
do it if I wasn't here.

If I'm gone, you're gonna end up
running the boat anyway.

If, all of the sudden,
I just say, "okay, look.

I can't go up, you know,
I got in a car accident"...

And let's face it, you're not
getting any younger, either.

What if, all of the sudden,

You can't handle
the deck anymore?

Right.

All I'm saying is I want you
to be the strategy.

I just want to see
what's in your head,

And then we'll tweak it.

I'm just thinking,

"keep the plan in our back
pocket, have it for later."

You know?

And I'm happy with you out there
for another 20 years

If you can do it.

[ laughs ]

Well, it's quarter to 12:00.
Let's get going.

Yeah, let's bail.
We're ready.

Narrator:
The Northwestern is embarking

On a 2-day, 475-mile run

to the outer reaches
of the Bering sea.

Their hunt for blue crab

Will take them
to unfinished waters,

Far from home and
far from any kind of assistance.

Yeah, all this
just really hit me

That we're actually doing this.

Sig: It's a two-day run
up to St. Matthew's island,

Which is where
the blue crab are located.

There are blue king crab,

As opposed to the red king crab
we fish out here.

But they're different.
They're faster.

Different strategies
are involved.

You know, because of that and
growing up doing it as a kid,

I find it interesting.

We need to get up there quickly

Because we do have
weather fronts moving in.

You know,
there's a window of opportunity,

And that just means
we got to go.

Blue crab, here we come.

Narrator: 245 miles
to the northeast of Dutch harbor

is the 118-foot Time Bandit.

Johnathan:
This one's got to produce.

It's dropped down. I only need
like about a 21 average.

So...

We're almost there.

Narrator:
With a major storm closing in,

Johnathan won't be able
to reset.

He needs these pots
to come up full.

It's "go" time, man!

Fourtner:
We have 13 pots left...

And a big storm coming.

Johnathan: Come up, guys.

See, I can't even stand up
in my workplace.

That is [bleep] bad-a*s!

There's probably 25 crab
in that pot.

Narrator: Not great,
but if they can keep it up,

It'll be good enough
for a ticket home.

Perfect.

Johnathan's gamble
on his scallop-bed honey hole

Has paid off all season.

Now the Time Bandit boys
are down to their last bet.

Oh, baby!

Perfect.

Johnathan: 38.
We actually had a 40.

But we had some

Narrator: They're fighting sloppy
seas for a mixed bag of 10s and 40s.

But so far,
they're holding their own

With the 25 average they need.

Come on.
We got six pots left.

[ all cheering ]

Whoo! Big boy!

Johnathan:
We actually had a 40.

I'm not gonna say nothing yet,

Because, all of a sudden,
it could be blanks.

Five more pots,
we're going home!

[ speaking indistinctly ]

Andy:
Oh, yeah, brother!

That's good one, there.

Narrator: Four more pots,
and they're headed for home.

Coming down to the wire.

[ laughs ]

Still got three more.

Andy: Ohh!

You ready to go home, Mike?!

Man:
Should be a good pot!

Hell, yeah!

Yeah!

Mikey likely a lot!

Narrator:
Lucky pot number three

Comes up
jammed with 50-plus keepers.

Going home!

Narrator: And the Time Bandit
finishes up the season

With a pot or two to spare.

Catching a little more
than we need, aren't we?

That's always good.

Want to throw the last one?

Nice work, Andy!

That's the best feeling
in the world,

When the last pot
breaks the rail.

Now all we got to do
is put them away and go home.

Whoo!

[ laughs ] here we go.

Now we're going home, guys.

Hell, yeah!
We're out of here.

Scott: Try to beat the storm
through false pass,

And hopefully we'll
get on the next flight home.

Time Bandit out!

Narrator: But there's no time
to celebrate.

They still have to outrun
the storm to false pass.

We're still a long ways
from home. I got to make it.

I got to get this [bleep] boat
through false pass right now.

Narrator:
False pass is a narrow inlet

With a dangerously shallow
bottom.

On a good day, it's a shortcut
into Ikatan bay and a fun ride.

Fourtner: Whoo-hoo-hoo!

Sweet!

Oh, yeah! Here we go!

Narrator: But in a storm, the breakers
in the pass can reach 30 feet

And crush a boat
like a beer can.

Andy:
Seas are gonna build.

We're gonna get out just in time
to hit the pass,

But there's gonna
be huge rollers at the pass,

Where the only time
we can get in

Is high water slack,
if it's bad.

Even then, we might
still not be able to get in.

[ radio static ]

[ spits ]

[ static cooties ]

No radio chatter.

Narrator: It's not
what Sig hears on the radio

That has him concerned.

It's what he doesn't hear.

[ static continues ]

Sig: So, we're basically right
off the Russian border, here.

You're kind of out there,
where, you know,

You're so far to the northwest

That, you know, even
the satellite communications

Are down.

Narrator:
A 2-day, 475-mile journey

Has left them
far from the rest of the fleet.

Sig: You don't have
the real safety net

Of having the fleet around you

Or, you know,
the coast guard nearby

Or land with any people on it,
you know?

You're just kind of out there.

Well, as a fisherman, I enjoy...

You know, getting out there

And trying to find
your own little spots and...

And getting on them,

But I don't enjoy being out
there alone, either, you know?

I don't enjoy the feeling

That, you know,
you're out there.

It just takes one pump failure
or something like that

To make
a real dangerous situation.

If it starts blowing

You know, you do have a rock.

You can go hide
behind the island,

But, ell,
that could last for days,

And you're stuck.

And I don't want it.

There's an island.
It's called "the pinnacle."

It's right before
St. Matthew's,

And it's always
shrouded in fog,

And it looks like
the movie "king Kong."

All of a sudden,

You see this big peak, and...

Looks pretty weird.

First pot of blue crab.

Beginning of blue crab.

First time for me
in about 15 years.

Looks pretty barren around here.
We'll see.

Narrator: And with
over $200,000 up for grabs,

Sig's gamble
could have a respectable payoff.

The fishery hasn't been open
for the last 1or 12 years.

I did it in 78,
when I was a kid,

And it's got a lot of meaning
for me, you know,

Because there's a lot
of memories up there.

Narrator:
But, for the crew,

Hunting down
the elusive blue crab

May mean another two weeks
of fishing.

And they've already spent
five weeks away from home.

There's a season open,
there's six boats fishing.

And we're one of them.

That tells you something
right there.

We can't even see them
on the radar.

We can't tell where they're at.

Just doing our own thing.

There's other guys I know
that spend three, four days

In Dutch,
screwing around, relaxing.

Not us.

Just keep the ball moving.

Got a time line.

Everybody wants to get home
to their families, you know?

That's a lot like these guys,
you know?

They'd rather be home,

So just keep moving along,
keep pushing.

You know, it's no fun
to be that far out by yourself,

But...

We got to fish, we got to try.

But the fact is, you know,

You're hell and gone
from anything, anybody.

So...

Narrator:

Kodiak Captain bill Wichrowski

Is battling angry seas
and a disgruntled crew.

When you look
at what's going on out here,

This is as good
as it's gonna get.

One of those over the railing...

And I'm practicing first aid.

Narrator: So far, bill has
relied on his fellow fishermen

For advice on where to fish...

And charity
when he ran out of bait.

Now he's out to
get his first taste of weather,

And this time, he's on his own.

Am I overly optimistic
right now?

No.

Do I need to be?
Yes.

The Kodiak is a turd, and
all you've had to eat is corn.

It's falling apart,
but it's still floating.

It's so common, you know?

If you're not on great fishing,

Everybody has this kind
of attitude.

If you're on good fishing,
everybody's a team...

We're all great,
we're all together.

Watch out!

Didn't like that one.

Or that one!

Ohh! [bleep]

[bleep]

Narrator:
The crew's being battered...

By lousy weather
and worse fishing.

This isn't doing me any good,
either.

I'm not condemning the guys.
I understand it.

But it's just, you know,
we got to get through it.

Mccalden:
I wish I had a time machine.

I'd go back
and not get on this boat.

Oh, my God.

We're losing money as we fish.

Right now,
they could give a [bleep]

If we went to town
and tied it up,

I'm sure every one of them
would be happy and gone.

And I'm trying my best
to keep them going.

I'm trying to keep myself going,
to be honest.

Narrator: The 350-pound steel
block swings like a guillotine,

Nearly decapitating Melvin...
And bill's son, Zach.

Did you see
how close this kid was

To getting smashed
by that block?

Dude, that thing
hits like a hammer.

We're pulling
mediocre [bleep] pots.

They're bored.
They're no keen.

You know, they're not moving.
They're not watching.

They're more
into joking, complaining.

It's kind of the residual here.

Narrator: The king crab season
is proving to be a gauntlet

For both Captain and crew...

And the forecast calls
for more pain.

Narrator: 269 miles
northeast of Dutch harbor,

The 103-foot Kodiak

Is hauling gear in 20-foot seas.

And even worse,
they haven't seen a pot

With more than 10 crab
in over a week.

Wichrowski: Trying to get
some crab on the boat,

But it's been three [bleep] days
of nothing going [bleep] right.

Narrator: So far, the only thing
Captain wild bill is catching

Is attitude.

A cost-effective person
would buy their ticket now.

Little [bleep]

Dude. Nada.

The sooner we get done,
the sooner we go home.

Wichrowski:
I'm starting to lose these guys.

They're starting
to get that attitude,

And I can only put up with that
so long,

And then the [bleep]
gonna hit the fan,

And Adam's gonna be up here
with his eyes all red

And his teeth
[bleep] clenched again.

I can see it coming.

I need to get him in,
off deck, by myself,

And talk to him
when this is over

Because if it gets to that again
and he comes up here,

It's gonna be [bleep] ugly.

This is exactly how it starts.
He gets that...

That's the way it started
the last two [bleep] times

It happened between him and I.

I'm at my wits' end with
this whole horse-and-pony show,

If you want to know the truth,

But I'm not supposed to
show them that.

Can't show weakness.

Narrator: Bad fishing
and some faulty equipment

Give Adam all he needs
to keep complaining.

I put a lot of time
into that [bleep] this summer.

I explained it to him
seven times

How to do a simple [bleep]
procedure so he'd get it

'cause he's [bleep] half-drunk
all the time and brain-dead,

And this is the way
he's repaying me.

I'm gonna knock the [bleep] out.

It's either go or stop.
It's here...

Or there! [bleep] dude.

I can't do anything else about
it. [bleep] what was that?

Damn.

[ sighs ]

He's one step away
from that red-eyed [bleep]

Where he [bleep] goes crazy.

You know how many times
I just wanted to tell you

To get the [bleep]
off the boat?

I need you to [bleep]
turn this around right now,

And if you can't do it,

That time I spent with you
was totally wasted,

As far as I'm concerned.

I don't know what you want me
to do for your [bleep] morale.

What do you think
I'm doing up here?

Do you think I'm up here
just [bleep]

And not trying
to make this happen?

I haven't said a word to you.
I haven't said a word.

Okay, but your [bleep]
attitude out there

Is dragging everybody with it.

Man, you are the pied Piper.

If you're in a good mood,
everybody's in a good mood.

If you acting like you have
for the last three strings,

You drag everybody with you.

We're still out there laughing.

Yeah, but it's a little
different direction,

What we're laughing about.

We're not catching crab.
Everybody's frustrated.

No, I mean, there's just
things just adding up...

With the block that's popping,
everything.

That had nothing to do with me.

We're laying in a ditch,
I go to straighten the boat out,

Next thing I know,
the block's swinging.

I said, "get some
[bleep] guys out there."

Watching that block,
almost inches away

From Zach's head today...
inches away.

He about [bleep]
got taken out, big-time.

Your own son
almost got taken out.

[bleep] almost annihilated.

That block was inches
from his face... inches.

What's your job
as engineer and deck boss?

You don't come in and b*tch
about the way it's going

If you can fix it!

Okay.

Today's probably
the first real day of regret

That I've had, coming back.

I need to finish
catching this crab, but...

Costa Rica's
sounding pretty good.

[ chuckles ]

Narrator: Over 400 miles
from the rest of the fleet,

The Northwestern
is on the hunt for blue crab.

Sig: When we set out
to go fish the blue crab,

I didn't expect we'd end up
to fish this far northwest.

Go figure...

The Northwestern is now...

The most Northwestern
of anybody.

Northwest, turning west, 55.

Get warm, boys.

Bradley:
Little warm-up for opies, boys.

It's not how
I wanted to start my day.

Man: It's a - blowin'.

Won't get a whole heck
of a lot done today.

It's a whole new ballgame.

It's a whole new time of year
to be fishing them.

Narrator: Even though the fishery
started three months ago...

Sig: It's the wrong time of year
to be fishing them.

Narrator:
...Sig still plans to gamble.

First string.

Sig: We're gonna
give it a few days.

So if we can't get at least

You know, you're starting
to go backwards.

Ahh.

Narrator: They're anticipating
hauling in something

That none of them
have seen for 12 years...

Blue king crab.

First pot. I see
some kind of crab in it.

[ all cheering ]

There's four in there!

[bleep]

Come on in, boys!

[ Edgar laughs ]

Not much.

Narrator:
The novelty of fishing blue crab

Wears off with the first pot.

And the reality
of a miserable grind sinks in.

Edgar: Should have brought
the small pots for this.

I don't think
we're gonna see the big...

I got a feeling it's all gonna
be single digits today.

Edgar:
Guys, just use a tote.

We just got to
haul a lot of gear,

And you can't haul a lot of gear
in this weather.

This sucks, dude.
This sucks.

Sig:
You know, there's no contract

That said "riches and fame
as a fisherman."

That's how you fish.

You take the good with the bad,
and you keep plugging along.

Narrator: 466 miles
to the southeast

Is the Cornelia Marie.

Phil's son Jake
is back on board.

The salty skipper
has his Harris clan

Back at full strength.

Phil: Oh, he acts
like a moron sometimes,

But he's got
his [bleep] together, too.

I have a lot of respect for him.

Everything he knows,
he's learned from me, you know?

It makes me feel good, you know.
The kid learned the right way.

Well, hopefully my dumb a*s
is around for a while,

But Jake will be fine, you know?

Josh needs a couple more years,
and he'll be fine.

Me and those two boys have been
through a lot in our lifetime.

You know, a whole lot.

And...

You know,
there's just a bond there

That is never gonna be broke.

I mean,
it's just never gonna be broke.

Man: Rider!

[ all cheering ]

Narrator: Normally, riders are
a good indicator of a full pot.

Damn.

But not this time.

Right when you think
everything's good,

It usually ain't.

Narrator: The Cornelia Marie
is chugging her way

Through 15-foot seas
and lousy fishing.

So, for a change,
for right now, tonight...

I'm not gonna get all worked up.

I'm not stressing out at all.

I'm gonna try to enjoy this.

Jake: Holy [bleep]

This girl's all [bleep] up.

Mussels growing on her [bleep]

Oh, I know where they were
four days ago.

I want to know
where they're at now.

[bleep]

Narrator:
He's trying to keep it cool...

...But when Jake is distracted
at the rail

And doesn't see a buoy go by,
Phil begins to boil.

You know, that's [bleep] there.

Hey [bleep] guys, we just
lost a pot over this [bleep]

Pay [bleep] attention, Jake.

I got to turn the boat around.

I didn't even see it.
I looked. I was looking.

It was, like, right
beside the boat, you know?

If can keep from k*lling
my kids, life is good.

It's a lot of stress, you know?

Narrator:
The coors light ab count.

The Northwestern and Time Bandit

Have wrapped up
their red king crab season.

Narrator: 293 miles to
the northeast of Dutch harbor,

The Cornelia Marie
is wrapping up

A 14-hour stretch
of lousy fishing.

Man:
...Northwest winds, 50 knots.

Gusts of 60 knots
out of bays and passes.

Wow.

[ indistinct radio chatter ]

We had a window to get these
pots on, surprisingly enough,

But we're not looking
at very good weather.

Down the line, here,
it's 16- and 30-foot seas.

Narrator:
With bad weather on the horizon,

The only good news
on the Cornelia Marie

Is that the last pot of the day
is on board.

Even after
the most demoralizing day,

The deck
still needs to be cleaned up

And prepped for tomorrow.

Tonight, seas 22 feet.
Northwest winds, 50 knots.

But one crew member,
the Captain's son Jake,

Can't find anything to do.

[bleep]

Well, see, he's just walking
around out there doing nothing.

And that's fine.

Go out there and stand there
with a thumb up your [bleep]

For all I care.

Just don't be the first guy
off the [bleep] deck.

Phil: Jake!
Huh?

Come here. I got a question
for you, buddy.

Yeah? I'm done.

And this is just k*lling
my curiosity.

Is it? [bleep]
put a damper on that.

I bet you will.

What's up?

Well, seeing as how
every night so far,

I see Freddie down there
rinsing the deck off

And Ryan cleaning his area.
Yeah.

And you're not
the cook anymore,

So what is your function
on here?

Turns out, we're all kind
of pitching in on cooking.

Like, last night,
I cooked a roast,

And there's certain other
activities on the boat

That need to get done, so...

And I'm doing my part.

The hell you are.

I want to see your a*s out there
cleaning that [bleep] deck.

Do your job.

I am doing my job, 100%.

No, you're not.
Yeah. Oh, yeah.

You need to look at yourself,
Jake, you know?

You think you're some
sort of gift to crab fishing,

And you're sadly mistaken.

I'm not no gift.

Well, you think you are.

You're sitting up here
whining about stupid...

I'm not whining. I have
every right to ask [bleep]

And if you don't like it,
get the [bleep] off!

Okay.

When we hit the town,
get the [bleep] off my boat!

If I can't ask you something,
you [bleep] yourself!

You got it?!

Okay, I got it!
I got it.

Good! Shut up!
And get out of my sight!

Okay.

Get out of here, then!

I'm not gonna put up
with your pantywaist [bleep]

I can ask you
any [bleep] thing I want

Any time I want to do it!

So you can
[bleep] yourself, Jake.

You high and mighty,
prima Donna piece of [bleep]

Narrator:

The Time Bandit has caught
their quota of king crab

For the season.

It's hard to see right now.
This is just ridiculous.

Narrator:
And now they're catching hell

From the storm
they were hoping to outrun.

Storm warning today.

Today, northwest winds,
50 knots.

Gusts of 60 knots
out of bays and passes.

Seas, 22 feet.

As Captain johnathan focuses on
navigating safely to false pass,

Below deck, the crew
gets a well-deserved break.

I'm ready for a vacation.

I'm tired of looking
at these [bleep]

We got a couple-hour break,
so I'm just hanging out

And checking out pictures
of my little guy,

Remembering
a little bit about home

And why I'm out here
doing this stuff.

Yeah, I don't really know
what I want to do.

I want to be a part
of the legacy,

But I want to be, you know,

Johnathan: That I can share this with
my son, man, is just phenomenal.

Scott: It's hard
to be gone a long time,

You know, when we're out here.

And it's really tough

To actually see
all these pictures of him.

If I didn't have pictures,
it probably wouldn't be so bad.

[ mouse clicking ]

I think about it
every single day,

And it's really hard.

It takes a lot out of me
when I'm out here,

Knowing that I'm missing
a lot of stuff.

Johnathan:
When I was a kid,

You're either on the boat
or you're off the boat.

Scott: It's really tough
to balance it all out.

Narrator: In the wheelhouse,
Captain johnathan

Is struggling to punch his way

Through a sea
stacked with boat-k*lling waves.

We need some eyeballs up here.

Narrator:
With the gear stacked up high,

The boat is top-heavy.

One rogue wave
could roll the Time Bandit.

Will you look out
that window for me, Andy?

Yep.

You might make it.

I can make it.
I'm gonna make it.

Son of a [bleep]
son of a [bleep]

Oh, no!
