03x08 - Sounds of Terror

I discovered
another huge land acquisition
in process by the government.

We are gonna be
continuing our investigation
in Northern California.

[Mireya]
You definitely see why,
if they'd build nests up here.

[Ronny] Yeah.

This is the perfect
environment for something
that wants to remain unseen.

Holy [bleep], look at
that structure over there.

[Ronny] Oh, wow.

-This could be a habitat
for something.
-For sure.

a bigfoot recording

and see if we can
draw something to that?

are a mile and a half
from their base camp

and after broadcasting
a possible Bigfoot howl

have just heard
a mysterious animal sound
in return.

did you play that twice?

I did not.
I think we just got
a response.

That sounded like it was
coming down from your area.

He didn't play it twice.

That second one we just heard,
he didn't play.

Ronny, that sounded
eerie as [bleep].

That sounded really creepy.

I have never heard
a sound like that
in my entire life.

It sounded animalistic,
but also slightly human.

That was really...
a really strange sound.

Hearing a sound like that
in the middle of the night

can sound actually
quite terrifying

and put you on edge,

but I have to try to find out
what made that sound.

To me, it sounded like
it came from that direction.

Do you hear that?

There's something over there.

Ronny, I just heard something
moving right in front of me.
I'm moving in.

[Ronny over radio] Roger that.

I'm scanning, you're not
picking up anything so far.

Holy [bleep],
did you hear that?

It definitely sounded
like something really big.

Do you know
where the sounds
are coming from?

The sound came
from just across the river
where I'm standing.

So I'm gonna go
into that side of the forest.

When I'm trying to figure out
where this sound

might have come from
in that area,
I heard the sound again.

This time, it was coming
from the other side
of the river,

and that's where our camp
is positioned.

Whoa, whoa, wait.
Hold on, hold on.

[shushing] Stop for a sec.

I just heard something
towards our camp.

I'm gonna grab my stuff
and meet you
down by the camp.

Copy that,
I'm heading across the river.

Let's go check it out.

What is that?

-[scurrying]
-[Mireya] Whoa.

[Mireya] That was weird.
Just heard something
really big run past me...

...but I couldn't
see anything.

[scurrying]

Whoa, there it goes again.

Seriously, what is that, dude?

My heart's [bleep] racing.

Like, what the [bleep]
is that?

[over radio] Hey, Ronny,
I just got back to camp.

There's definitely
something out here.

All right, copy that.
I'm heading your way now.

There's been numerous times
on my expeditions

where I have left came
to come back and find animals
rummaging through our stuff.

So we need to be
really cautious
as we get closer.

The last thing we want to do
is startle an animal
that may be aggressive.

Hey, Ronny,
whatever was out there,

it doesn't look like
it came through camp.

As I walked through base camp,
I could see no evidence
that anything had been there.

Nothing had been disturbed.

Whatever it was
did not come into our camp.

But judging by those noises
I just heard,

it really was no more
than 150 feet away.

-[Mireya] Hey.
-[Ronny] Hey.

-That was weird.
-[Ronny] That was really
creepy as [bleep].

[Mireya] What was that?

I've never heard
a sound like that.

Yeah, it sounded like a scream
and a whistle combined,

and it sounded
completely different.

Well, it sounded
totally different
than the sound you played.

-Yes, it was, like, breathy...
-It was, like, animalistic...

-Yeah.
-...and also kind of
weirdly human-like.

I mean, it was
a really strange sound.

And I started immediately
going towards the direction
of that sound,

and the next thing I knew,
I was looking at our camp.

-Whoa.
-Like, it was that close.

So whatever it was
that was moving out there,

-it doesn't look like
they came into the camp.
-Mmm-hmm.

It was in that direction
about 100 feet.

So it's unlikely
that we got anything
on our trail cams.

So what I want to do is,
tomorrow, I want to go
and explore that area

and see if we see
any evidence of anything
that could've been out there.

There was something
both animalistic and human
about that sound.

It was incredibly eerie,
and it's unsettling

because it was
that close to camp.

So far, nothing's really
coming up on this yet,

but I'm gonna take some time
and just listen, see if we can
hear anything else out here,

have another look around.

[narrator] 4 miles from Ronny
and Mireya's position,

Russell is surveilling an area
where just hours earlier,

he discovered
possible evidence
of a bipedal creature

walking down a nearby hill.

All this is indicative
of what humans would do
or something on two feet,

bipedal stepping,
so that you don't slip.

You know, you get
into a situation like this,

you just really don't
want to miss anything.

There is something over there
putting out a heat trace.

What is that?

Ah, it's just
a family of deer.

[high-pitched animal sounds]

That's an interesting sound.

It sounded like a hyena.

[high-pitched animal sounds]

You gotta be hearing that,
that's loud. Yeah.

I'm not being able
to see anything.

[high-pitched animal sounds]

I heard it again.

I wish I knew what that was.

According to testimonies
that I hear, people say
that Bigfoot mimics sounds.

The sound of a hyena
in Northern California...

...is impossible.

That sound seemed to be
coming from the same
general direction as my camp.

Let's head back there.

It's 2 miles
to get back to camp.

We'll take it nice and slow,
be watchful.

And when we get back,
we can SatLink that sound
to Bryce.

That was crazy.

We have something
really interesting.

We were using a Bigfoot call
that we've used in the past,
and we got a response,

and it's unlike anything
either of us
have heard before.

I think we have a Bigfoot
responding to our call.

Really? That's amazing.
Were you able to get it
on microphone? Or...

It was picked up on our mics.

So it's not the best quality,

but we're hoping
you can filter out
the background noise

and improve the sound.

And I'm thinking we could
possibly use this
as our call tonight.

I can absolutely do that,
I love that.

You know, it's weird
because Russell was hearing

some strange
animal-type noises as well.

Uh, I wonder if these
could possibly be related.

So I'm just, uh,
kind of going through
some of these sounds

that Russell sent me
as well as Ronny and Mireya,

and I find it just so strange

that they both were able

to capture vocalizations

on the same night,
but from different locations.

So now, I really just want
to sort of compare them,
evaluate them,

and see if I can't
clean up these files,

and, uh, see just what
was going on out there.

All right,
so let's take a look

at the sound Russell
recorded here.

Here it is.

It's too distorted.
Let me see if I can, uh,

just boost the levels on that
a tiny bit here.

Single this out a little bit.

I mean, so Russell
called these hyena sounds,
but I don't hear that.

I'm actually hearing
some type of ape sounds,
almost like a chimpanzee.

More importantly,

these remind me of something
known as the Sierra Sounds.

So in the 1970s,
a guy name Ron Morehead

was with a few of his buddies
on a hunting trip in the high
Sierra Nevada mountain range,

when in and around their camp,
they started hearing
these strange calls.

They had them
expertly analyzed
by linguistic experts

who were able to discern
actual language embedded
within those vocalizations,

and they've become, uh,
sort of a landmark case
in the Bigfoot community.

But I think
what's really strange to me

is Russell captured
these sounds
out in the field, and...

and they sound
strangely similar.

So I think I have a copy
of the Sierra Sounds
here on my computer,

and I just wanna...
Yeah, all right, I got them.

I'm just gonna
pull them up here
and, uh, do a comparison.

Here are
the Sierra Sounds. Ready?

I mean, that's incredible.
And here's Russell's sound
that he just captured.

That's exactly
what I'm talking about.

Can't help but to notice
the similarities there.

That's wild.

The thing that stands out
to me are these sort of
high-pitched bursting noises,

and I hear it
in Russell's vocalizations
that he recorded,

and I hear it as well
in the Sierra Sounds.

I mean, this is incredible
because it's clear to me

these creatures
have intelligence

and are able to communicate
with each other.

And it begs the question,
did we capture
our own Sierra Sounds

here in Northern California?

[Bryce] So this is the, uh...

the recording
that Ronny and Mireya sent me.

Okay, I don't know
what the hell that was,
but that was creepy.

Let's isolate the sound
and boost it up
a little bit more.

That does not sound
like mundane fauna.

It almost sounds like...
like a warning.

Uh, a w*r cry, even.

Um, it's eerie
to say the least.

Okay, so I've been able
to enhance these

and sort of, uh, isolate them
as best as I can.

Now, I want to get these
back out to the team
in the field and...

and have them play them
over their speaker system

and start, you know,
hopefully communicating.

We've had great success
in the past,

uh, harvesting these sort of
local vocalizations

and then playing them
back out in the field,

and, uh, picking up
multiple recordings.

So I'm really excited to...
to see what happens

when they start playing this
back out in the field.

He was able to clean it up,
and it sounds pretty good.

It's pretty clear.

After listening
to what our mics
were able to capture,

I wasn't very hopeful
that Bryce was gonna be able
to amplify that sound.

But now that I've heard it,
this clear recording gives us
a new tool to try out here.

What's amazing is we're
actually gonna use a call
from this region

and possibly even blast this

to the same individual
that actually made the call.

So it'd be really interesting
to see what we get
for responses.

Hearing what Bryce was able
to extract from that file,

I'm more confident

that what we're listening to
is a Bigfoot.

Tonight, we're gonna
get responses,

we're gonna get behavior

in reaction to these
better than any other calls

because we are using
regional sounds

that's familiar
to the local Bigfoot.

I'm kind of diving off
the side of this hillside.

As you can see
it's really, really thick.

It's very hard to move
stealthily through this.

[narrator] 5 miles away,
Russell is investigating
the area

where he heard
a strange hyena-like sound
the night before.

[Russell] We're gonna
take it a lot slower here,

be a lot more methodical,
and much more cautious.

We're gonna drop down
on top of it

and see if there's
an indication
of what made that noise.

Down in this area below me,

I heard what sounded like
the laugh of a hyena.

I've been in the Northwest
for my whole life

and I've never heard a sound

that sounded like
a laughing hyena
in the forest.

Whoa, [bleep].

That's a weird thing
to walk up on.

This stem

looks like
it came out of there.

How would that get there?

And here's the hole
that it came from.

So the first thing I find

is a piece of a log
that had been

uprooted from the log
and literally stabbed
into the ground.

Not that it got kicked over
or fell out.

It was picked up

and pushed into the dirt,
into the soil,

and deep.

It caught my attention
because it looked
like a cross.

Like that, that's no accident.

That is really interesting.

It reminds me of something
similar I saw in Oregon.

Look at that little branch,
right there.

That's kind of weird-looking.

All right, let's look around.

Let's see what we got
around here.

In Bigfoot research,
you're looking for
all these anomalies

or strange things

that don't add up.

That are not native

to what nature
would normally do,

and it was very much
out of place.

And you think, "I'm definitely
in the right place."

Oh, check this out.

Oh, wow.

Right here
is what caught my eye.

There's a full bed right here.

Look at this.

All this stuff is
matted down...

literally matted down.

I can't roll off this thing
left or right.

Literally, couldn't do it.

Holy crap.

Come see what I'm seeing.

You see how this is all...

It's a dish.

It's literally

a place to lay down.

It's clearly been slept in.

It's been inhabited.

And I want to say bed,
but this is a nest.

It's up in a tree

in an elevated position.

Deer don't do this,
elk don't do this.

Something that
thinks critically
or is intelligent

had to have done this.

It seemed very strange

in this particular setting.

Bryce met with a witness
in Washington

who said they found
Bigfoot nests.

Can you describe the nest?

you know, like

[Bryce Johnson] Whoa,
that's huge.

[Russell] Then he claimed
the government
took over the land.

[witness] My manager said
a state agency shut it down,

and that we're not supposed
to talk about it.

[Russell] Well, we know
the government is definitely

trained to be much
more restrictive with the land
around here.

Maybe this is why.

There's a bed down

A big oval right here.

Multiple spots over here.

All these twigs
have been laid on.

They've been pressed down.

All this stuff
is all pressed down,

This is incredible.

There's something
gathering in numbers
in this space.

Now here's a trick,
here's something...

If you see this one

this isn't a tree
that broke off.

This was literally--
follow my fingers.

This was placed here.

A deer can't do that.

A bear can't pick it up
and place on that.

Something with thumbs.

Something had
to have moved these.

That pyramid shape

is indicative of a lot
of the tree structures

that I keep getting shown.

In my opinion...

...these sticks were placed

with intent.

I've never seen
anything like this.

Never.

There's a lot of things
going on

in this one single
small space.

There's a lot of
unanswered questions
and I want answers.

There are six
or seven beds here.

One really nice one
on that tree.

Out of these nests,
or bedding areas,

there was one that was
in the crook of a tree,

clearly elevated
above the rest,

which would give it
one of two positions,

either the alpha,
the one in charge,

or two, the watcher
or the protector.

So this is unique enough

that combined with this nests
and this bedding area,

I think it's worth digging in
a little deeper.

What I want to do is,
on the sap of this tree,

if something laid on there
that has fur,

it might have pulled off

any kind of loose fur.

If I can get a hair sample,
that would be ideal.

Anything that would be
a hair...

...it'll be smaller
than these pine needles.

You see this.

That's a hair.

Let me get my kit.

I'm looking at something
that can very well be hair

from this creature.

This could be

exactly what I'm looking for.

Oh, look at that.

As far as being able
to identify

what uses this bed...

maybe that's the predator
that I'm looking for.

I think it's time to bring

Ronny and Mireya in here.

at these beds.

that are literally on

and in a tree.

it's a bed-down area.

It's a space in the tree,
like a nest.

It's literally a bedding area
on top of a tree.

[Mireya] Nest in a tree?

-That sounds really bizarre.
-That's different.

In scientific investigations

where we are looking for

animals that are rare
and elusive,

nests are often
a way of knowing

if those animals
are in an area

and how many individuals
there are.

This is exciting
because this could be

the best piece of physical
evidence on this expedition.

[Russell on walkie]
It's very, very interesting

and I would just like
for you guys

to have a look at it
if that's possible.

Yeah, sure. Could you

But the only way
that we're gonna discern

which nest or bedding areas

are deer, or bear, or Bigfoot

is by finding something
that's built with intent...

This is very interesting.

[Ronny] ...like that possible
nest we found in Oregon
two years ago.

It was clearly built
by something
with opposable digits.

The branches were woven
like something
intelligent built it.

When it comes to
Bigfoot nests,

usually they are
very intricate,

they're complicated

and it shows something
built these with intent.

And that's
what we're looking for.

We tried to get here
as quickly as we could.

[Russell] No, you did good.
We got enough sunlight to get

-a pretty look at it
and see what we have--
-How far are these things?

Actually,
they're right behind me.

-I mean, we're within 20 feet.

So right off the trail here.

When I came down
through here...

this opening,
it kind of caught my eye.

Yeah, have a look at that.

It's a little doorway.

You can tell
it's been used a lot,

but it just kind of seemed
like all this thick overgrowth

and then this one spot
to give you access.

-Otherwise, you'd just walk
right past this.
-[Russell] Absolutely.

Here, circle up over this way.

-Right in front of you.
-[Mireya] Yeah.

Crazy.

[Russell] See, how--
that's been used a lot.

It's basically a space
where you could lay down.

-[Ronny] Hmm...
-[Russell] But if you look
behind you,

all this underbrush,

if you're laying right here,

absolutely nothing
could get close to you

without alerting you.

This looks trampled.

-Looks like there's been
movement here.
-Yeah.

So you're thinking that
something's using

that as a nest.

[Russell] Absolutely.

If you look at the top
of this thing,

something definitely
laid down on top of that.

-Yeah, I can see that.
-Those branches
are compressed down,

and a deer won't do that.

One of the great things
about working with
Ronny and Mireya

is that extra set of eyes
is always close by.

With Mireya's
primate background,

her input helps me
see things

from a much more
scientific perspective,

and that is
exponentially valuable.

[Mireya] So here's
sort of the problem
I'm having right now.

-I'm looking at this

and, yes,
there's clearly animals

-that are bedding down here...
-Right.

...and primates
have been known to use beds,

but it doesn't
look constructed.

This all looks like natural
opportunistic use.

I'm not seeing something here
that really makes

me think something made this.

So, to me,
what we're looking at is

opportunity, and not intent.

[Russell] Well, maybe
there was nothing

that was placed here
with intent.

But there is something right
over here that I think was.

Then let's go check that out.

[Mireya] When I'm looking
for nests out here,

I'm looking for something
that would have been built

not just with intent,

but by a creature
that is highly intelligent

and perhaps has
the same capabilities

with their fingers, and hands,
and mind that we do.

[Ronny] That's amazing.

[Ronny] What the hell?

-[Mireya] Super strange.

I don't know what that is,

but that was
interesting enough

I thought I'd like to have
you guys have
a look at that as well.

broken off, placed.

and it's placed.

Guys, can we just
point out something...

-...sort of obvious.

-Sure, what are you seeing?
-It's really small.

what's gonna use that?

[Ronny] Maybe
juvenile Sasquatches

are placing things
up like this to kind of

emulate Mommy and Daddy

as they're making
those tree structures

and it's in a smaller scale.

And it kind of reminds me of

a miniature version of

the tree structure
from Kentucky.

Something with hands
definitely put this together.

[Mireya] It's not out of
the realm of possibility

that this could be symbolic.

That would take
an incredibly
intelligent animal.

You know, I won't deny
strange stuff happens
while we're out here

and I don't want
to just dismiss it.

[Ronny] It's definitely weird.

I can't explain what would
cause something like that.

But the fact that
Russ found these beds,

not to mention
that he heard a sound

that sounded something
like a hyena,

makes me think
we might be onto something.

We both heard some

vocalization last night
that has us puzzled.

So, you get the call blaster,

we can set up tonight
and blast that local sound

and see if we get any kind of
response from it.

I think it's worth a shot.

[Mireya] Sounds like a plan.

[Ronny] Yeah.

So, I'm on my way
to speak with a gentleman
named Bob Lackey.

Now he's a guys who's worked
for the Forest Service
for most of his life,

and he saw something one day

that he knew right away

must be this thing
called Bigfoot.

The more and more
I speak with individuals

who work in these
government agencies,

the more and more I think
that they must know something

that they're not telling us.

So I understand you had a...

an encounter,

for lack of a better term,

a few years back.

Yes.

Can you tell me a little bit
about that?

So I worked for
the US Forest Service

and it was 1993.

Pretty remote area,

in the middle
of nowhere actually.

And my job there
was to count trees

that had been planted
in the spring.

I did my first plot,

I headed off and completed
my second plot

and I heard a huge limb snap.

Um...

I didn't even bother
looking up, honestly,

it wasn't anything
I was interested in
looking at.

So I travelled to the last lot

and then when I got
just 20 yards from it,

I heard another
huge limb snap.

Um, and this time,
it was incredibly close.

And then the edge
of this clear cut,

there was about
a 2-foot hole.

And through the hole,
I could see the back leg

of a creature standing there,

just from
the calf muscle down.

The sun was shining on it
and it had 2-inch red hair,

the color of an orangutan,
it was very light color
in red.

What was your initial reaction
to what you were seeing?

I never believed in Bigfoot,

but at that time,
I instantly knew

that that's what
I was looking at.

[Bryce] Wow.

The calf muscle was so huge
and so well-developed.

And I was absolutely
in the middle of nowhere.

I mean, it took me
two-and-a-half hours
of driving to get back there.

I knew there was no one there.

Eventually, it started
walking away up the mountain,

and when it got about

I could literally see
all the way up the leg.

It was incredibly muscular.

-Wow.
-Very human-like
in shape and size.

From the waist up
it was enormous.

I would say the shoulders
were between

Just stood there
and stared at me.

And after about 45 seconds
to a minute,

it took two steps away
from me.

I never saw it again.

Did you tell anybody
about what you saw?

Um...

The Forest Service,
at least in that area,

didn't believe in Bigfoot,

didn't want to hear
about Bigfoot.

-Really?
-And I know that
one person at one time

had submitted hair and feces

to the biologist to, uh, check

-and he discarded them.
-Really?

-The biologist did.
-Yes.

Incredible.

Did he even analyze them or...

-just threw them out,
outright.
-Yeah.

Sounds like it's something
they didn't take
very seriously.

No, I've never heard anyone
in the 14 years
I worked for 'em

or the 5 years
I worked for the Fish and Game

-talk about that subject.
-Mmm.

If a government agency
wouldn't even acknowledge this

then to me,
that's a huge red flag.

To shut down an investigation

before it even gets started?

That tells me there's
something else going on,

and it leaves me wondering

just what type of information

the government
actually has on Bigfoot.

You know, I spoke with
a logger

who said he feels like

he might have stumbled upon
some, some nesting site.

You know, and when he told
his superiors about it,

they really told him
not to tell anybody

about what it is that he saw.

And it wasn't too long after

that a government agency
came in

and acquired that land.

DId you ever come across

what you would consider

sort of a bedding-down site

or a nesting site or anything?

There were encounters
I've had in my life

that this might explain to me.

I remember, just a few miles
away from there,

coming across
a bed one time, but...

I-- you know, there was
nothing to connect it to...

-Yeah.
-...until this encounter.

Bob has been working this area
for over two decades now,

and if he can look back
and recognize

that he was seeing nests

throughout those years,

then that tells me
we're in the right place.

Do you have any feeling
that the government agencies

know about these
creatures' existence or...

I would have to believe
that somewhere

there are some
agencies that believe.

Something like
the Fish and Game,

there has to be people
who have reported it.

-I mean, it's a huge
organization.
-Right.

I can't believe
I'm the only one
that's had an encounter.

-Right.
-Like I said,

I know without a doubt
that it was a Bigfoot.

Now, I accept
that it's just part of nature.

It's just another creature
that's out there
that I was unaware of.

of spotting any creature
that may react to the sounds.

With this whole team together,
what's really great

is we can cover quite a bit
of area all at once.

I'm gonna stay
on the hillside
where I was last night

with my call blaster
and my thermal imaging device.

Ronny's got
that parabolic mic.

He can rotate that
in any direction

and pick up anything
coming from me

or coming from Mireya's side,
above and below.

On the first hillside,
Ronny will be waiting.

That is such a haunting sound.

that we do out here,

I am not really sure
what we're playing.

If an animal is,
in fact, territorial

and your playing
a sort of call
that would illicit aggression,

then that could potentially
be very dangerous.

I'm hearing some branches snap
to my right.

[Ronny] It's moving
right around you.

[Mireya] Can you play it
one more time?

I've got the thermal directly
in the direction
of where we're getting that.

Guys, I just heard something
get thrown or almost
sounded like running.

Ronny, that break
sounded like it was
right close to you.

Holy [bleep].

[over radio] I see a thermal
on the hillside above you.

To my left or right?

Ronny, it looks like
it's in the tree above you.

How big does it look?

Ronny, this thing
looks as big as you.

It looks like it's using
some of the undergrowth
in the tree as concealment.

There's something
in this tree above Ronny,
and he's not seeing anything.

But I'm watching this thermal,
and it moves to the right,

and I realize that it is not
in the tree above him,

but it's on the ridgeline
further behind him.

If it's that large
and all the way
back behind him,

that distance,
this thing has
significant size to it.

Just, uh... I'm gonna
hit this thing one more time

and see if I can get
a reaction out of it.

Right now, I've definitely
got movement.

Now, I'm seeing
one, two, three spots.

This is a little bit peculiar.

It's weird, it's like it knows
the tree is directly
between me and it.

Ronny, it's just about gone,
it's almost all gone.

That's weird.

Ronny, it's completely gone.

It has completely disappeared.

It's almost as if
this thing is intelligent
enough to know

that I'm looking...
peering through the darkness

at this thing
with thermal imaging,

and it's trying
to conceal itself
with the undergrowth

and move backwards
into that darkness.

Russ, it seems like
every time you play
that vocalization,

something is reacting.

anything on my thermal,

so I'm gonna start going
in that direction.

so many times,
we hear something,

and by the time we get
to the location
where we've heard the sound,

it's gone.

So I just wanted to run
to the spot where I was
hearing this sound

because I became frustrated
that we couldn't see anything,

and I decided to take off
down the trail

to see if I could get to it
before it escaped us.

So hard to see anything.

You really only see
the next tree up,
and nothing past it.
