in space it's tough getting up early

especially since there's no alarm clock

out here

I hope I didn't sleep past the eclipse

I just hatched my most brilliant ski

scheme ever I found the perfect way to

take over the Galaxy

yeah yeah right

try to do it quietly it has to do with

the very building blocks of the Universe

imagine my delight

so what's for breakfast this morning

all right conflicted milk hey moto I

know corn flakes are corn but what it's

made of a mixture of various things but

mostly water what's water made of

hydrogen and oxygen

made of just hydrogen and oxygen they

can't be broken down into other

substances that's because they're

elements what is an element I thought

you'd never ask

let's check the multipedia

look around everything you see is made

out of elements they're a little like

building blocks you can put together

blocks to make all kinds of things and

then you can take those things apart

when there's nothing more to take apart

you've got a pile of blocks you can't

take apart the blocks it's the same with

elements an element can't be separated

into any other substance you can't take

it apart look around you elements are

the building blocks of all that you see

there are over a hundred elements like

iron gold Mercury helium aluminum

bananas nope bananas are made of a bunch

of different elements in fact most

things like water and wood and sugar and

you and me are made of a bunch of

different elements but a few things are

made of only one element a gold

All the known elements are organized on

a chart called the periodic table of

elements they're grouped in a way that

allows scientists to understand how they

behave and how they combine with other

elements

if you want to learn more about elements

after breakfast we could visit my old

friend zula's official Keeper of the

elements sweeper of the elephants

there it is the office of The Keeper of

the elements

around here somewhere you mean them

elements are the building blocks of all

that you see around you

make anything I want the greatest

takes a few letters to make lots of

these blocks can talk oh goodness no but

they're a lot like elements you can't

break them down into smaller pieces but

you can put them together to make things

by combining just a few elements we can

make lots of different things that's

because everything we can see is made of

elements you know I have a lot in common

with elements because I can make a lot

of things too

yeah you can make a mess

um what's the chemical reaction let's

find out in the multopedia

to understand chemical reactions you

need to know that all matter is made up

of tiny particles called atoms so tiny

that even a regular microscope can't see

them

iron guy to the rescue

check out these zula patrollers these

are iron atoms i'm made out of a bunch

of them just like the metal teeth on my

rake right there are all kinds of atoms

aluminum and oxygen and silver and lots

more and when atoms combine they form

molecules like when hydrogen and oxygen

atoms combine to form water molecules

all matter is made up of atoms and

molecules and chemistry is the study of

matter and its changes you bet

look what happens when the oxygen atoms

in water meet up with iron atoms that's

called a chemical reaction the ion

combines with the oxygen to form

something new

iron oxide usually called rust and when

a substance undergoes a chemical change

a new kind of substance is produced

which is often a lot different than the

original one

check out what happens with apples

another chemical reaction bingo fruit

turns brown when it's opened up to

oxygen in the air it's almost like the

fruit rusts

but it still tastes good

so is that what happens to the leaves

every fall exactly the chemicals in the

leaves react to the change in the

weather causing beautiful colors

now i want to make our own chemical

reactions by making oatmeal raisin

cookies i love science

there's one thing i don't get malto how

do different substances combine to make

something new hmm

perhaps the easiest way to explain it is

to see it firsthand with the scissorizer

a slower version of rust but with silver

we don't have any baking soda sure we do

when we put it in the cookie mix
