A long, long time ago,
at the very end of the world,
in a town with the
modest name of Zapiecek,
there lived, with his wife, a good
and honest man named Wojciech.
This man was so hard-working
that he worked even when
he had nothing to do.
This may seem a very strange
and unusual trait,
but in Zapiecek
no one was surprised,
because all the inhabitants
were hard working
and didn't know
any other mode of living.
These people got up at dawn
and went to bed at dusk.
Because, as you know, the sun
rises and sets when the rooster crows,
they bought themselves
a rooster, so that the sun,
wandering over Zapiecek,
knew exactly what to do.
Sooner or later
diligence is rewarded,
so the citizens of Zapiecek
prospered more and more.
The shoemaker had already
bought so much leather
that he had enough for one
whole boot for the mayor.
The tailor had not yet made
enough money to buy materials
to make new clothes with.
but he'd made enough
to buy a pair of scissors.
with which he skilfully adapted
old suits from father to son.
The blacksmith, who had just finished
making a bellows, was saving money for iron
and waiting patiently for someone
in Zapiecek to buy a horse.
And the teacher, a wise man -
and so good that he wore rose-colored
glasses so as not to be angry with anyone -
bought a box of chalk and
corrected the spelling mistakes
that had long been
rampant in Zapietek.
The wise and just mayor
watched over everyone.
Three apples, three apples!
A harvest, a great harvest.
Mr Teacher!
A great harvest.
Then one day...
...in quiet and peaceful Zapiecek,
an extraordinary thing happened.
In Wojciech's house,
twins were born.
A son?
Good morning.
A son?
Thank you, my wife is doing well.
Are you going deaf, Wojciech?
A son?
- Aren't they beautiful?
- Beautiful!
And they have the most beautiful
complexion - between their freckles!
I couldn't get a dummy.
But you're certainly
more polite, right?
Truly nice boys.
And what are their names?
- Well, we haven't chosen yet.
- We must choose right now.
I would like
Filamon and Kalasanti.
Those are not
proper boys' names.
I suggest Bonaventura and Pantalamon.
Those are not good either.
Truly masculine names would be...
Protazy and Gerwazy.
And what will it be the
diminutives? Gerwek and Protek?
I would suggest Jacek and Placek.
- Jacek! - Placek!
- Jacek! - Placek! ...
From the first moment,
they promised to be extraordinary,
but the reality exceeded
the wildest expectation.
Fortunately, they
grew up healthy,
and had a good appetite,
so they flourished like weeds.
Jacek! Placek!
Help me.
Well?
Jacek!
Placek!
With every year they grew, the
inhabitants lost a hundred years of peace.
People! Help!
Help!
No wonder that in such conditions
the rooster stopped crowing altogether...
As a result of which
the sun lost track of time...
...and neither rose nor set...
And the poor residents
of Zapiecek stopped sleeping.
Fortunately, the wise mayor
found a solution.
Barnabo, from today you
replace the rooster.
But - I can't!
You'll learn.
Go ahead.
The poor residents were happy,
not knowing that Jacek and Placek
were preparing a new
and terrible crime.
Is it really made of gold?
- Of course! Look how it shines.
- And no one has stolen it yet?
They couldn't have had
a ladder like this one.
Maybe.
If we managed it, we'd be rich.
And we'd never have to do any work!
We don't anyway.
Yes, but we wouldn't
have to work ever.
- Go on.
- And if I can't reach?
Stand on tiptoe. Come on.
I can't reach even on tiptoe.
So jump then, stupid!
Get down! Get down!
Barnabo? Did someone knock?
Finally the time came
when these terrible boys had
to be sent to school.
It is not said as 'bair',
but as 'b'.
Who's making that 'ahh'?
I see that you already
know the first letter.
That's good.
Dear children, I will teach
you wise and useful things.
What's your name?
If I tell the truth
that I am Jacek,
he'll think I'm lying
and that I'm Placek!
I'm Jacek... no, that's not true!...
You wanted to deceive me and
that's why you told the truth.
In order that the teacher would never
mistake the one for the other...
...he quickly counted that Jacek
had 3974 hairs on his head...
...and that Placek had 106 hairs less.
Despite the boys' devouring
the teaching A*DS...
...it didn't make them smarter.
Count the numbers to 10.
And you?
One, two, three, four, five...
- You.
- Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.
To the blackboard.
It was even worse with writing.
Jacek knew the letters
from A to L...
...and Placek from M to Z.
Terrible things resulted from this...
...because though Jacek
could write his whole name...
...Placek knew only the first letter...
...because the rest were in his
brother's half of the alphabet.
So it looked as if only a raisin was
left from a cake that had disappeared!
Finally, the teacher, seeing that
the boys did not want to study...
...and were disturbing the others,
sent them home...
...and told them never
to come back to school.
Help me, boys.
Help me.
Placek! Placek, wait! Placek!
Placek, wait!
Placek!
Jacek!
Jacek!
Placek!
Placek!
Jacek! Jacek!
The poor parents loved
their bad sons so much...
...that they secretly
helped each other...
...and then imagined that the
children had done their hard work.
Dear children!
What happened?
Why are you waking us up?
To thank you.
For your good heart.
Poor things.
You must have worked terribly hard.
...Dragging the harrow,
to get so much done.
- I'm sure you're a bit tired.
- A little.
Now you've learned how to work,
we'll fix the roof together...
...and then you'll help me pick
up the stones from the field.
You'll see.
We shan't be poor any longer!
Such a lump of gold!
If we managed to steal it,
no one could force us to work.
I have no intention of fixing the stupid
roof or collecting stones anyway.
Me neither.
What a stupid thing
to have to work.
Right... you know what?!
There must be a country
where you don't have to work.
But where?
You have to search.
There's no point in sitting here
where they tell us to study or work.
That's definitely no use.
But what are we going
to eat on the road?
We'll take bread from our parents...
...and then we will steal the moon,
sell it, and buy everything we want.
- That's the last loaf.
- Maybe we won't need to eat it.
Wait, this bread is very heavy.
Let's eat half now -
then it'll be lighter.
Why are you laughing?
I was thinking:
what will our parents think...
...when they see that there
is neither us nor bread?
- Maybe they will curse us.
- Stupid, they wouldn't even curse a fly!
Give me the bread!
It's a stone.
Our parents cheated us.
This is your punishment.
This is your punishment.
- For what?
You robbed your own parents...
...and left them alone to starve.
Be glad that it was the bread that
turned to stone, and not you!
Our parents won't starve!
They'll work and have bread.
Your parents worked for this bread
that you stole, and worked very hard.
And do they curse us?
You vile boy.
When your parents prayed for you!
It's gone.
Take a good look, because
he might be lurking somewhere.
He didn't come after us.
Hey!
Hey, tree!
...Tree...
He ran away.
Lucky for him, because I wanted to hit him!
I would have hit him with the stone!
- I'm hungry.
- Me too.
All because of that stupid bread.
Quiet.
We need to steal the moon
as soon as possible.
Yes, but how do we reach it?
Stupid, you have to go to the
place where he goes to sleep...
...and we'll catch him there.
All right, let's go.
...All right, let's go...
Echo!
...Echo!...
Be quiet there!
...I'll give you one!...
*I'm a brave man,
and you're a brave man.*
*We are two brave men together.*
*We'll have great fun,
we foresee in our plan.
...Beating...
*We'll catch the moon in a net.*
*Then we'll have a lot of gold.*
*And since gold is in
demand these days*
*We'll get rich as hell!*
...Hell...
*Us twins are looking
for a life without work.*
*It's easy for someone
who's rich to get...*
- Bread! - Sausages!
- Biscuits! - Tea!
...Rags...
- *Forward then Placek!*
- *Forward then Jacek!*
*Forward bravely, even if blindly.*
*When you have gold,
you can buy everything.*
*Because the moon's gold,
you can sell it right away.*
...Away...
*The moon rolls by, behind the clouds,
saying you can't get away with it.*
...get away...
*We are such a pair.*
*The only pair like us
in the whole country.*
*And we're such brave, valiant lads*
*That we're bound to go unpunished.*
...Punished...
- Who are you to preach morals?!
- Trying to scare us brave boys?!
- We're not afraid of anything!
- Us brave lads won't hesitate!
...ha ha...
- I'm resting.
- Me too.
Look! Over there!
- What is it?
- I don't know.
Why do we have to strain our legs?
We'll sit on its back
and ride it to the moon.
If it allows us to.
Just approach it calmly.
What are you?
I'm a donkey and please don't bother me.
Would you like to go on
an interesting journey with us?
If you are one, why
do you look like two?
And if you are two...
...why do you look like one?
There are two of us, but, if we wanted,
there could be three or more of us.
That's too much.
I am one. That's too much.
But you didn't answer, would you like
to go on an interesting journey with us?
I can't because I'm thinking how to
find out what's going on behind me.
We will help you if you come with us.
Agreed.
You have to stand so that your
head is where your tail now is.
It's hard, but I'll try.
Amazing!
Brilliant!
I wonder why it didn't occur to me earlier.
Well then... are you coming with us?
I can't.
Because I'm looking for a country
where you don't have to work.
Great, because we're...
I'm sorry, but I have to see
what's happening behind me.
Yes, but we're trying to tell you...
I've turned, but nothing has changed here.
We're saying that me and Placek...
I'm sorry, is it you and Placek
or Placek and you?
It's all the same!
Oh no, there's a big difference.
Look, Placek and me are on our way...
Excuse me, but why do you
never finish a sentence you start?
- Because you interrupt!
- That's what all donkeys do.
Look, we're going to the
same country as you.
Come with us!
I suppose I can.
I'm not picky.
Down with work!
Let the donkey work!
The rascals! What brats!...
Good morning.
Are you healthy?
Yes.
But why do you ask?
You don't know us.
I don't know you.
But I would like everyone to
be healthy and happy.
And are you happy?
Extremely happy, thank you.
You work hard?
Ah, I got used to it.
I've been doing it for twenty
years, from dawn to dusk.
What are you carrying soil?
There's plenty of it everywhere.
This is royal land.
And I had only the rock.
When I complained?
The King laughed and said: take as
many handfuls of soil as you like.
Yes, yes.
Soon I will have the soil.
And the King the rock.
And what if the King take your land?
Oh no.
This is my work and my land.
He'd have to k*ll me.
And you?
And are you off to the city
for the races. - What races?
Cross country running.
I would go, but I don't have time.
Apparently, there are some big prizes.
Big prizes? And how far is this city?
Not far.
A mile?
Maybe.
Maybe more than a mile?
- Maybe more.
- Maybe two?
Maybe two.
Maybe ten?
Ten? Maybe.
Maybe a hundred?
I can't swear,
but it could be 100 miles.
This road is kind of strange.
Not strange, just long.
How do we get there?
Straight that way.
And where the sheep graze, turn left.
What if there are no sheep?
Then I don't know.
What city is that?
That? That's exactly the city
you've been asking about.
Then why didn't you
say so right away!
Because you asked for directions.
Come on!
Be healthy!
"The Great Race - valuable prizes
ONLY FOR HUNCHBACKS"
We must get a prize!
It's useless.
With the prize we will buy a horse...
...and ride comfortably to the place
where the moon sleeps.
How do you know we'll win the race?
We have to win.
Maybe I'll trip everyone else up.
They'd notice and beat you up.
It's better to sprinkle the road
with broken glass.
Where will you get so much glass?
- I've got it!
- Tell me.
Let's get in first.
Hello young man.
Are you a hunchback?
Do you have a mirror?
I've never owned a mirror in my life.
Obviously. Go in.
No mirrors allowed in here!
Pay tax on cows, goats, cats,
canaries, pigeons and c*ck!
He didn't pay his tax!
Tax on cows, goats, cats,
canaries, pigeons and c*ck!
Tax on cows, goats, cats,
canaries, pigeons and c*ck!...
Pay tax on pantaloons, wind,
trumpet playing, hats and baldness!
Tax on days of the week,
rain and teeth!
Tax on days of the week,
rain and teeth!
You little rascal!
- What's going on there?
- What's going on there?
What is the complaint?
What is the complaint?
They complain that one of
them took the ring from the other.
We'll deliberate and issue a just verdict.
Is this ring his?
No!
Is this his ring?
No, it's not his!
Since the ring
is neither his nor his...
...it becomes the property of the state.
What time is it?
What time is it?
Quarter past nine.
- Move a little faster!
- Move a little faster!
As you command.
Finally!... Got you, you brat!
What is this young man
with a face like a turkey egg?
I come from a country where people
can catch up with the hare on the run...
...and can catch up with the wind.
Do you have any notable records?
Half a million!
Let's start.
And where is the starting tool?
One, two and three.
What a view, ladies and gentlemen.
What a view!
At the moment, a small competitor
in red shorts is in the lead.
What technique!
What fitness!
It's a shame you can't see it!
With what ease he is moving
away from the other contestants!
A truly wonderfully organized breakaway.
Wonderful.
Ladies and gentlemen
The contestant in the red shorts
moves forward more and more.
What a shame you can't see it.
Ladies and gentlemen
I can't actually see anything anymore...
...because the colourful contestents
are disappearing around the bend!
Ladies and gentlemen
Our player is clearly weakening.
He's losing his strength.
He is falling behind.
Oh ladies and gentlemen,
it's good that you don't see it!
We're nearing the end of the race.
At the moment it can be
said with full certainty...
...that we don't know who will win!
In any case, it will certainly
be one of the competitors!
Amazing! A miracle!
Ladies and gentlemen, a miracle!
The competitor in red shorts
running in the last position...
jumps forward in a flash,
passes the colourful players...
Overtakes, overtakes, finishes.
Bravo, bravo red shorts!
Finish, finish, finish...
The boy in the red shorts won.
Where is the prize?
Ah! I have him.
You little rascal!
Where's the boy?
Where's the victor?
Where's the boy?
Where's the victor?
Look for the boy in red shorts.
I'll show you...
- Bring him here.
- Bring him here.
Here he is!
The winner was modestly
hiding behind a haystack.
- Fraud!
- Fraud!
A thousand lashes for each of you!
Get going.
No, No! Help! Mercy!...
Vice-Governor Mortadella!
By order of the most Serene King, you
cease to rule in this city from today.
Down with Mortadella!
Down with humps!
Down!
- Down with humps!
- Down!
Long live mirrors!
Long live them! ...
But I forbade possession of mirrors!
In place of Mortadella, there has been appointed the dignified Saradella.
As a sign of my grace, I am
imposing a tax on straight backs.
My legs are tired.
It would be nice if we had a horse.
For those prizes you couldn't
buy a horse anyway.
Look, the sun has hidden himself.
Maybe not far is the place
where the moon sleeps!
Let's go.
Maybe it would have been better
to stay in our village?
And what? Work?
I wouldn't even dream about it!
- Did you just howl?
- Me? I thought it was you.
No. Listen.
Mother!
Look - a lady.
Is that you, my son?
It thought it was our mother.
Definitely not our mother -
she'd have recognised her sons.
Poor children, where are you going?
We're going to steal...
...To find some work.
Stay with me.
We'll light the fire together.
What for?
For my son.
Ten years ago, he went out
into the world to look for work.
Since then, I burn this
fire every night...
...so he won't get lost on his way
home and drown in the swamp.
What if he doesn't come back?
How can a child not
come back to his mother?
Poor children. You're tired.
Lie down in the hut.
There's something for you to eat there.
She's a good woman.
Do you think her son will come back?
He ought to come back.
She'll be so surprised when
she sees so many branches!
- But this isn't work!
- Of course not!
It wasn't work, it was a joke.
I could eat a piece of bread.
Bread?
Here you can only eat fish.
And raw at that.
Who is talking about raw fish here?
You don't like it?
- On the contrary.
- Where are the fish?
We don't care about fish.
We know where.
- Where? Where?
- Tell us.
Where the moon sleeps - but
you can't get there by yourselves.
Yes, yes, if you take us there,
we'll show you the place.
If they show us the place,
we'll have all the fish for ourselves.
Agreed. Come. Come. Sit down.
Just don't capsize!
Do you think you're
dealing with a swallow?
Hold on tight!
Are there many fish there?
So many that the water
overflows the banks.
- Are there many crucians?
- The crucians are the most numerous!
And are there many tenches?
Even more than crucians!
Beautiful crucians - and catfish?
So many that their whiskers
disturb the other fish!
And what of the King of Fish,
the fat carp?
There are even more carp than
the catfish and crucians combined!
- I'm getting dizzy thinking about it.
- Help! Help! Stay up! Help!
- Do you eat fish?
- Never, never.
Hold on. Hold on tight.
Jacek, my bird's weakening!
Mother!
Fish!
Fish! Fish! Fish! ...
Do you hear anything?
The mean pelicans weren't fooled.
Maybe they drowned.
Not likely. They swim better than you.
But we'll have to
walk to the moon.
Everyone hurts us!
Oh look, what a stupid goat.
Stupid? Not stupid,
because she's got four legs.
So what? Together we have four too.
But we have our own.
And she has hers, so don't be silly.
You don't be silly! After all,
a goat is almost a horse.
Oh gosh.
That's right.
We'll get her.
We've got her!
I've got you.
Stay here boys, and when the
flower blooms, I'll come back.
If only there were a ladder here.
What did he say about some flower?
- Jacek! - What is it?
- Help me. Come on.
Maybe the moon sleeps somewhere nearby.
Forget the moon. If that monster
returns, and we're still here...
...we're more likely to see stars!
Quick.
Placek!
We'll definitely catch him here today.
Not so loud, or they'll hear and warn him.
- Who? - The trees, the water,
the frogs, everyone.
All right.
Let's at least get ready. Come on.
- Let's hide under a tree, or he'll see us.
- All right.
Remember, we'll get out
the sack at the last minute.
- My heart is beating loudly.
- Mine too.
I hope he doesn't hear.
The frogs are drowning it out.
Those devilish frogs!
We'll take it to the city
and sell it there.
- And if they ask where we got it?
- I'll say we found it.
And if they don't believe us
and put us in jail?
That's stupid - just for the moon!
If it were the sun, then
that would be different.
You're stupid.
The sun is less needed than the moon,
because it shines during the day...
...when it's bright anyway,
and the moon when it's dark.
Look how dark it is now!
- Is this the right way?
- Yes, yes, keep going straight.
I think we've been here before.
How are you leading?
I'll go in front.
Is he lighter, or is it just me?
I thought so too.
Let's take a look.
It broke and we lost half.
No, because I would have noticed.
Besides, he wasn't always
whole in the sky either.
Or maybe he's half dead.
We'll get a lot for half as well, though.
- Now to the left.
- We should go right.
We've already been there.
We've already been there.
All right, but if we get
lost again, you'll see.
Captain!
Captain, we have some more work to do.
- What? - Two boys are circling round
the rock with a sack full of gold.
Let them carry it.
We don't have time
for such trifles now.
A pretty little thing, a bag of gold!
We'll miss another opportunity!
A great opportunity!
A stupid bag of gold.
A bag here, a bag there, it all adds up.
You have to think about the future.
It's clever to buy furs in the summer.
He is right.
We're broke, and every bag
of gold means a lot to us.
Yes!
That's why you're our captain,
so you better think about it.
And you don't think
that I considered it?
And who is planning the
attack on the Golden City?
Who doesn't sleep at night thinking
of how to break into the city...
...where everything is made of gold?
Do you?
But you despise a bag of gold.
It is not a virtue to
throw gold into the mud.
Would you pass up such an opportunity?
Do you want us to live in poverty?
If you don't give the order to attack...
...we'll cut off your ears!
- What is this? Mutiny?!
- Mutiny!
It's quite a privilege, not
being able to see one's own ear!
All right, we'll deal with these boys.
He who listens to the wise
advice of a thug does well.
Take cover!
We're back in the same place!
So much for your being in the lead.
It's all because of this stupid darkness
- if only the moon would shine.
- We've got him in the bag.
- True.
Let's see if he's still alive.
We must run, before
he dies completely.
Yes, but this way.
We've got them! Grab them!
I called out and then someone
in the crowd punches me in the eye!
Fools! Look for those brats!
Look far and wide! Look around!
Look, I see someone's
not very clean legs!
I pulled the birds out of the hole.
Now I don't know which is which!
- There's no gold.
- Nothing.
Where's the gold?
Mr, Robber, it was the moon and he died.
You dare to lie?
Moon? Be careful you don't see stars!
Put hot coals in
their lying mouths.
That's not a punishment
- it's a pleasure!
He eats very beautifully that
which would burn the other.
Put them with the poor guy and
watch over them until morning.
At dawn we set off
for the Golden City...
...and there we will pour
molten gold down their throats.
Then they'll start talking!
Long live the Captain!...
A dead captain is very poor.
So it's said.
Placek, look.
It must have fallen
out at the last minute.
No, I was watching
the sack the whole time.
He got away himself.
All because of that stupid darkness.
If only there was that woman
who lit the fire in the swamp.
What woman?
Oh, it was far from here.
She waited for her son.
- For ten years.
Her son went looking for work.
Was there only a single
path that led to her hut?
Yes.
That was my mother.
Is she still alive?
Of course she is.
Jacek, is it far from
here to Zapiecek?
I don't think so.
So much gold!
How it sparkles!
But how to get in?
You must think.
So I'll think!
I have an idea, but I'll
tell you when you free us.
I am free, said the hare,
browning on the sides.
And will you take us
to the Golden City?
I will, I will, now speak.
Someone else's secret always
arouses the greatest curiosity.
Perfect.
Are you coming with us?
I'm going back to my mother.
Thank you.
- What do you want, thief?
- How do you know?
Everyone around here is a thief.
What do you want?
I'd like...
I have so much gold I'd
like to leave some here.
Fine, leave it.
Do you have a piece of bread?
Will you let me in?
Are you alone?
Alone.
- What is that?
- That? My dachshund.
So give me the bread.
Stop it! Lie down! Lie down!
Good man,
do you have a piece of bread?
Do you have a piece of bread?
No, worthy sir.
Sir, do you have a piece of bread?
No.
Tell me, what does
ordinary bread look like?
Bread is brown, when it's baked.
Brown when baked.
And what does it smell like?
Tell me.
What a stupid question.
It justs smells like bread.
Brilliantly said. It smells like bread.
Enough about bread.
Is everything here made of gold?
Yes.
We live in golden houses...
...we sleep in golden beds
under golden sheets.
Even the walls and pavements are gold.
Everything made of gold!
Even the walls.
Even the pavements.
Everything.
And you, sir, hate gold?
Then give me that chain.
Give it to me, a poor man!
What?! Should I give you
my gold, my beloved treasure?
My beloved gold?
Help! Help! Thieves!
Thieves!
Bandits, thieves!
- You heard what that old man said?
- Yes.
Look.
Gold!!!
Be healthy!
*I'm just a little boy,
and you're just a little boy.*
*The wide world is beautiful.*
*But we returned here briskly*
*Because it is the
law of the heart.*
*There's always time for learning.*
*And life has taught us*
*that work brings happiness.*
- And where is Echo?
- What do you say, Echo?
You boys leave me speechless!
THE END
