-This is Barbara Walter.

She's spent her career
tracking the patterns

that can split even the most
stable nations in two.

But could it happen here?

In your book,
you kind of describe a path

that a democracy can take
towards becoming an autocracy.

How do you even approach
studying and predicting

something like that?

The U.S. government
has a task force

called the "Political
Instability Task Force."

I served until the end of 2021.

And we would sit around,
and we would think about,

"Okay, what are all
the possible factors

that could increase the risk
of civil w*r in a country?"

And the first factor is
this measure of a government

that we call "anocracy."

It's just a fancy term
for government

that's neither fully democratic
nor fully autocratic.

It's something in between.

Every country gets a number
every single year.

And the number goes from -10,

which is the most autocratic
type of country.

And it goes all the way up
to positive 10.

And these are the most
democratic countries.

And the U.S. was a positive 10
for many, many decades.

By the end of Donald Trump's
administration in 2020,

we were downgraded to
a positive 5.

And a positive 5
is now in the anocracy zone.

And the reason we were
downgraded then was because

we had a sitting president

who was refusing to accept
the results of an election,

and was actively trying to
overturn those results.

-We're gonna walk down
to the capital.

-And then the second factor

was whether citizens
in those anocracies

had organized themselves
into political parties

that were based on race,
ethnicity, or religion,

and not about politics.

So, it wasn't about
whether you believed in

a stronger social safety net,

or whether you believed in
free enterprise.

It just mattered
what your identity was.

Those two factors together

predicted better than
anything else

where a civil w*r
was likely to break out.

-What are the three stages
of insurgency?

-The CIA has this manual
for insurgency,

which they developed

so that the U.S. government
could look out in the world,

and try to identify which
countries were experiencing

these very, very early phases
of an insurgency.

And they lay out
the three stages of insurgency.

The first stage is called
the preinsurgency stage.

And what happens
during that stage is

you have groups in society

who start to articulate
their grievances.

There are things that they
don't like about the government,

about what's happening
in the country,

and they begin to
organize themselves.

Stage two is when they start to
build a military arm.

They start training.

And you start to have
sporadic attacks.

And the CIA specifically says

that one of the dangers
of stage two

is that most people still don't
see the underlying movement.

And the attacks that do happen
are not eye-opening

because they tend to be viewed
as isolated incidents,

and so, they're ignored.

And then, stage three
is when you start to see

a consistent series of attacks.

And then, that's when it becomes
really clear that there is,

in fact, an insurgency.

If you read this...
This manual, and you realize

that this was created by the CIA
through their studies

of insurgencies
outside the United States,

knowing what's been happening
here in the United States,

it's eerily similar.

-When you're talking about
the rally planner,

people need to really

-There is an attack
on masculinity in America,

and we want to
make that cool again.

-The country's still
trying to make sense

of what happened on January 6th.

What role did Q play in fueling
membership in armed groups?

And how close are we
to a full insurgency in America?

-There's a fish right there
on it.

-Denver Riggleman has spent
the better part of a year

examining everything
that led up to the insurrection.

-I've never seen this much data.

-How does it go from being
a digital soldier making memes,

doing the research,
hounding in the boards,

to then being, like,
the next step

-Vice and McInnes parted ways

racism, and any form of hate.

When McInnes stepped down

-The Proud Boys, who ultimately

-The January 6th committee's

when we go to Austin,
when we go to New York,

we contact local law enforcement
to tell them,

"Hey, this is our
marching route."

If we got any death threats,

One time in D.C.,
the FBI did get involved.

And it was an acid attack

that they wanted to commit

-How were you made aware

-So, at first, we saw it online.

We contacted the FBI.

And then, they called me back.

I think some of

just made people focus
in other avenues,

where they should have been

like getting people

not focus on, like,

-Do you think there is

between what QAnon was preaching

-This is a crossover between
the Q supporters,

like Hollywood,
and the banking system,

and the elitist system.

Some people blame it on, like,
the Jews.

But I think that there is
some truth in, like,

the Hollywood

is "prejudice to the point

another race, another gender."

The West is the best,

so you see yourself as better
than the Eastern world.

and Sebastian Gorka

regarding your political future,

and that you could be

that could then run for office.

-As far as a plan

No.

I've been focusing my guys

and a city council level,

and a county commissioner level,

to take over, like,
these cities,

these county positions.

But I think that
we've been playing too clean

when it comes to
some of these things.

I think it's time to get
a little messy.

-And by a little messy,
what seems to be the result

of a lot of these
school board confrontations

is dozens of death threats
to these, like, elderly folks.

-I can't condone the violence,

-An insurgency typically starts
when groups begin to arm

and recruit former military
and law enforcement personnel,

to leverage their training.

We're both vets.

This is the closest thing
I've found to the military

since I've been in the Marines.

-Mary McCord is a former
assistant attorney general

for National Security.

She now runs Georgetown Law's

Institute for
Constitutional Advocacy.

-Because of Internet platforms,
we've seen this coalescence

of extremisms
of different flavors

who all came together in support
of really common ends.

So, you've got your conspiracy
theorists, like QAnon.

You've got straight-up
White supremacists.

You've got
accelerationism groups

who are agitating, actively,
for civil w*r.

You've got your militias,
who say that "We're there

to uphold the Constitution.

We're not r*cist."

And they all,
particularly in 2020,

sort of put aside whatever
their differences would be

in order to coalesce
around things like,

you know, anti-public health,

opposition to the racial
justice demonstrations

after George Floyd was m*rder*d,

and then, most importantly
of all, the Stop the Steal,

right, where all these
different groups came together.

And that's what you saw
on January 6th.

Whatever their
differences might be,

they glommed onto
that narrative,

largely promoted
over social media.

And the militias will put
the "freedom" tag on it.

Right? This is freedom
to live your life

without government interference.

-How do you make the distinction
between a lawful

and an unlawful militia?

-A lawful militia
is a state militia.

The term dates back
prior to the founding.

The colonies did not want
to have standing armies.

They didn't trust that.

But of course, they needed
some sort of defense.

And so, they decided it would be
the use of the militia.

Any militia that purports
to just organize itself,

and is not actually governed
by civilian authority,

elected authority,
elected officials,

is an unlawful
and unauthorized militia.

-What is the section
regarding militia's use

as a protection against
a tyrannical government?

-Well, that that exists nowhere
in the Constitution,

to be clear.
Right?

And it exists nowhere in
in statutes, state or federal.

That is just sort of
a made-up part

of the mantra
of private militias.

That's just rhetoric.

That's just their calling card.

And it's not part of a democracy

based on adherence to
the rule of law.

-Okay, so, how is
that operational?

There are thousands of them
around the country,

and they're just all
breaking the law?

-The fact that these groups
lack authorization

has been largely ignored
over history,

and I think has been part of why
a mythology

about the Second Amendment
has arisen

over the last several decades.

"well-regulated"
has always meant

"well-regulated
by the state."

The Supreme Court has been clear
since 1886

that the Second Amendment does
not protect private militias.

-Given how quickly people
are becoming radicalized,

and the militia groups
are gaining recruitment,

do you see more violent
conflict in our future?

-I think it's certainly
possible.

I think political violence
and anti-democracy efforts

are now going hand-in-hand.

We have militias threatening
actual election officials,

so that they will quit,

so that they can be replaced
by election deniers who,

if they have
the opportunity to say,

"I'm not gonna certify
this result

because I think it was a result
of fraud," they can do that.

And if they need to
call upon the militia

to support whatever they do,

those alliances
allow them to do that.

-I think the thing
that is actually

the most interesting to me
is that militias in America

have gone through periods
where it's like

after the Oklahoma City bombing,

where we saw the numbers just
drop all around the country.

But historically,
when militia groups are strong,

it is these groups
that are super anti-government.

They sort of live off the grid.

And they definitely
are not interacting

within sort of normal society.

But the militia groups
that we're seeing rise

right now in the United States
seem to be very different to me.

They're sort of an active arm
of one of our political parties,

it seems.

-And I mean, following
what's been happening

over the last year,
it seems that they're really

delivering on
Mike Flynn's request.

-Get involved in
your damn communities.

Local action
has a national impact.

These groups that traditionally
wanted nothing to do

with the government

are now trying to take it over
from within.

So, I guess, like,
the next step on our journey

has to be finding groups
that are organizing,

and are going a step beyond
what The Proud Boys are doing.

-Check this out.

There's this group called
the "Cottonwood Militia."

This is in northern California.

During the pandemic, they were
not a fan of the lockdown,

and they thought that that was
infringing on their rights.

They didn't want to wear masks,

they wanted their kids
to go to school.

So, they went to the county
board of supervisors,

and said, "We demand that
you take these down."

And they said, "No."

-One of the threats made,
it says in part,

"I'm going to stab you to death
with a large knife."

-One by one, they're gonna pick
off the rational supervisors,

and then replace them
with their own people.

-Now, this huge county
in northern California

is actually entirely controlled
by the militia.

-Should be prepared, sure.

Stock food, stock ammunition,
stock your weapons,

teach your kids how to...
How to use those things.

-Militia allies

starting in 2020.

And people like myself,
which were fairly conservative,

were here, but they weren't
taking an active role

in what was happening
in their city

or in their county...
Not like what we see today.

-What role does faith play?

-Your rights come from God.

Your rights are God-given.

The Constitution backs that up.

And so,
faith is very important here.

Without that,
nothing else will work.

-The Founding Fathers
thought that the militia

was so important
that they protected it,

along with only seven
other institutions,

including the presidency,
and a few like that.

-The Cottonwood Militia
was founded by Woody Clendenin.

-Seen here demonstrating
how he deals with anyone

who dares try and take his g*ns.

-According to him,
recruitment in his militia

is 10 times what it was
before 2010.

-I don't know why every
able-bodied person

hasn't joined
their local militia.

You look at what's going on,

everybody knows, this election,

there was fraud throughout it.

Everybody you talk to.

I haven't met one person
that doesn't think it.

-I guess we're proud to be
the first people he met

who don't believe
the election was stolen.

What a beautiful place
you got here.

- Oh, thank you.
- This is gorgeous.

How big is the militia?

-I mean, it's big.

I mean, this little town
is 3,500 people,

and over a 1,000 have came to
training over the years.

So...

-You guys are doing a lot
of prepping out here.

What point do you
pull the trigger?

-A lot of people
that I talked to,

it would be
the confiscation of g*ns.

We want to do things
the way that the...

The Founding Fathers
intended for it to be done.

You know, we want to go through
every legal recourse.

If you do that, and then things
keep getting worse,

or they take the next step,
and break the Constitution.

Well, you figure,

the Revolutionary w*r
across America.

If something like the Second
Amendment got taken away,

there would be a couple million
in the California state militia,

at that point.

-Woody was the founder
of the militia,

but when it came to
running the recall,

Carlos Zapata took the reins.

-We're not gonna let Communism,

or this control over our bodies
and our minds,

take root in our county

where we're raising
our children.

Right now, we're being peaceful.

And you better be happy
that we're good citizens,

that we're peaceful citizens.

But it's not gonna be peaceful
much longer.

'Cause this is a warning
for what's coming.

-The CIA manual explains that

politically organized
insurgencies develop

political structures which
consolidate power in a territory

before undertaking
military operation.

-You don't vote your way out
of Socialism once it takes root.

The only way to eradicate it
is to fight with arms,

to have a violent,
violent confrontation,

to have boood in the street.

-Pretty impressive horns
you got there.

Do you think this American
experiment is coming to an end?

-Sadly, I do.

-We've been all over
the country.

We're talking to all sorts
of people...

Left, right, center, all of it.

And a lot of talk
about civil w*r.

Where do you stand on that?

-We need a Great Divorce.
I hate to say it.

It's a complete subversion
of society

is what they want, right?

I mean, that's really what
the other side wants.

-Should be prepared, sure.

Stock food, stock ammunition,
stock your weapons,

teach your kids how to...
How to use those things.

I hope somebody else
fires the first b*llet.

I don't want it to be me.

-What would cause you to fire
that first b*llet?

-If they came in my home,
and tried to take my g*ns.

-If they came to my home,
and tried to vaccinate my kids.

I will go to your... ing house,

and I will sh**t you
in the face,

if I found out
that my kid went to school,

and you vaccinated them.

I don't care who you are.

You're dying
if you're vaccinating my kids.

-Am I concerned about civil w*r?

Absolutely.

You've got former military

indoctrinated with
this nonsense,

and they have skills.

-No matter how you look at it,

it seems we're in
the second stage

of the CIA's analysis
of insurgencies,

where groups with grievances
organize into armed factions,

and recruit people with military
and law enforcement backgrounds.

-But how close are we
to stage three?

It's a question
disturbing enough

to spur General Steve Anderson

and two other retired generals
to write a warning

to the country
in The Washington Post.

General. General.
General.

-One of the things that people
have been talking to us

a lot about
is the prospect of civil w*r.

-Am I concerned about civil w*r?

Absolutely.

You've got former military
that have been,

you know, indoctrinated
with this nonsense,

and they have skills.

And that's why we need
to step up now,

and speak out, and say,
"Hey, this is wrong."

You know,
"We have a great country.

This is a wonderful system
of government

that has evolved here.

It is not perfect,
but it is fixable,

and..."
- Worth fighting for.

-It's worth fighting for.

Exactly.
- Yeah.

-Can you talk to me about what
motivated you to take that step

when you hadn't really spoken
publicly about the issue before?

-I'm a conservative Republican.

I always was.

So, on 6 January,
everything changed.

It absolutely disgusted me.

Till that point,
although I have opinions,

you know,
I really didn't share them.

-I've always been raised, as an
Army officer, to be apolitical,

to stay out of politics,
that we, you know,

the civilian control
of the military is a key,

fundamental element
of our democracy.

Then, I realized,
not only do I have a right

to speak my opinion,
but I have an obligation to.

I felt that everybody that knows

how our Constitution
is supposed to work,

our government's
supposed to work,

needs to step up, and speak out.

What really bothers me is that
soldiers, sailors, and Marines

are having problems
distinguishing between

loyalty to the Constitution

versus loyalty to a person
or a political party.

And that is why
you've seen a rise

in extremism in the military.

Soldiers don't understand
that distinction.

They see the guy, you know,
with the orange makeup,

thinking, you know,
"That's the president.

Of course I support him.

If he says, you know,
'charge up that hill, '

then of course
I'm supposed to do that."

-We're gonna walk down
to the Capitol.

-If he says, "Let's go down
there and kick some a*s,"

I mean, soldiers are gonna
get confused, you know,

and thinking, "Well, that's...
My loyalty is to that person."

But that's not right.

They swore an oath
to the Constitution,

to our democracy...

Not to people, not to a person,

not to a political party.

It shocks me, it horrifies me.

It's my duty to speak up,

and to call it out
for what it is...

An incredible as*ault on our
democracy that must be stopped.

-Do you have a relationship
with Mike Flynn?

Do you know him?
- I know him.

I served with him in Iraq.

I had profound respect
for the guy.

He was a really bright,
capable guy.

-You're saying "had"...
Past tenser.

- Oh, he disgusts me now.
- When did that change?

-Probably when he was
at the convention,

yelling, "Lock her up,
lock her up."

-Damn right.

Lock her up.

- What was he good at?
- Intel.

He was... He was a brilliant
intelligence officer.

He would take, you know,

all the elements
of intelligence.

I mean, that's what
intelligence officers do is

they were able to tell
the commander, you know,

what the enemy is going to do.

And that is
a profound capability.

And he was very,
very good at that.

-I don't even care about
the Democrats anymore.

I don't care about the Left.

I know exactly what
their plan is.

-What do you think motivated
Mike Flynn

to get involved with QAnon?

-Power.

The opportunity to be somebody
that's in charge.

-QAnon only posted from
basically a couple of weeks

within special counsel Mueller
calling in Mike Flynn,

and then immediately ends
right after he's pardoned.

Does that seem like
an odd coincidence to you?

-I don't believe that
that is a coincidence.

There probably is
some connection there.

-The "lock her up" speech,
the first QAnon drop

was about Hillary Clinton.
Going to jail.

-And then, "trust Flynn."

-"Do as I say.
Believe me.

Ignore your eyes.
Ignore facts."

"Just," you know,
"trust me on this."

Then, you know, he went
and advocated for, you know,

using the military to help
overthrow the government.

He essentially advocated for
a coup.

I could not believe
the lack of preparation

on part of the Capitol Police
and the National Guard.

I didn't understand why
the National Guard

hadn't been deployed.

Having worked four times
in the Pentagon,

I know that that would been
one of the first things...

First calls that I
would have made.

But, I mean, it's like watching
a train wreck in slow motion.

-Why do you think it took
so long for the National Guard

to be deployed?

-That's a very good question.

I know that the G3 of the Army
was Michael Flynn's brother.

Was he potentially influenced
in some way

that we don't know about?

It needs to be investigated.

-So, what we see here is
Mike Flynn and Sidney Powell,

who we know.

On the right
is Charles Flynn and Joe Flynn,

who are siblings of Mike Flynn.

And then, in the middle
is Jack Singlaub.

-Jack Singlaub is sort of
a legendary figure

in the intelligence community,

is the... one of the founding
members of the OSS,

which was the predecessor
to the CIA.

-It's the kind of guy you'd want
when you're planning a coup.

-Definitely a guy who knows
how to plan a coup.

-The question that comes from
looking at this photo,

taken in October,

near the Capitol where
the insurrection happened is,

I wonder what
they were discussing.

Mike Flynn led the charge
by giving a speech

the night before
that was basically a general

speaking to his army
the night before battle.

-Where we stand tonight,
we stand on a crucible moment

in United States history...
Willing to die,

willing to sacrifice
their very lives

for the fresh air of liberty
that we breathe.

-Following that, we have,
on January 6th,

an event that required
the Capitol Guard to be called

in order to defend against
the riotous mob.

For four hours,
that decision hung in the air

while they broke into
the building,

while they were hunting members
of Congress

and the vice president,
and attacking police officers.

During all of that,

our Pentagon was watching
the same thing we were,

and were actively making
the decision

not to immediately
send the Guard.

We seemed to get a lot
of conflicting reports,

so I don't really know
what to conclude on that,

except for using common sense,
which is, you know,

blood is thicker than water
in a lot of cases.

And I think faith and family

are big components
of the Flynn family.

-It certainly seems like
there's a lot of sketchiness

around the day, with January 6th
and Charles Flynn.

We've tried everything
we possibly can

to get to Mike Flynn,

and it just doesn't appear that
he's gonna talk to us.

The good news is,
we are in touch with

the next closest thing
to Mike Flynn,

which is Patrick Byrne.

Yeah, I mean,
I can't think of a better person

to ask, than Patrick Byrne,
about where all this is going.

-Patty B

-I'm the guy who caught
Donald Trump's attention.

-There we go.

I sat in a room like this,

with the president right there,

and Flynn, and Sidney, and such.

Having me
involved with the truth

complicates things for them.

-We're on our way to meet
Patrick Byrne,

the guy we met
at Reawaken America in Salem.

-If your mission is
in search of,

and I'm the kingpin,

then, we are especially
well matched.

He's a Stanford-educated PhD

who built one of America's most
successful e-commerce companies,

Overstock.com.

In 2019, he stepped down
as C.E.O. after it was revealed

he'd been having a relationship

with convicted Russian spy
Maria Butina.

In 2021, he joined forces
with Mike Flynn,

and started the America Project.

-The longest... ing walk.

There we go. Hello.

-Hello, young man.

You know, I've died 500 times.

I literally have died 500 times.

What do you...
What do you mean by that?

Do you mean, like,
metaphorically, or...?

-I've spent 800 nights
in hospitals.

I've been put to sleep, now,

And they've also stopped
my heart 400 to 500 times.

-What is that experience like?

I mean, I've heard about
near-death experiences.

-It's an old friend.
It doesn't matter at all to me.

-Byrne has spent
tens of millions of dollars

investigating the results
of the 2020 election,

which is how,
shortly after the election,

he found himself in the Oval
Office with Donald Trump.

-I was in the room for the
famous December 18th meeting.

By the way,
I don't mean to brag,

but you may have seen,
there's videos up there.

I can memorize a deck of cards.

I can reconstruct,
almost word for word,

everything that was said
in all these different meetings.

I sat in a room like this,
with the president right there,

and Flynn, and Sidney, and such.

And within that
four and a half hour meeting...

-While investigating the origins
of the attempted insurrection,

this meeting became
a focal point

for the January 6th committee.

-On December 18th, 2020, a group
including General Michael Flynn,

Sidney Powell, Rudy Giuliani,
and others

visited the White House.

-[ Stammering ]...mentioned.

I'm the guy who brought them
in there together.

I brought them into
the Oval Office.

I'm the guy who caught
Donald Trump's attention,

down the hallway
from the Oval Office.

-They were pushing the president

to use the U.S. military
to go around the country

seizing Dominion
voting machines.

And I mean,
he could immediately,

on his order,

seize every single one of these
machines around the country.

He could take
military capabilities,

and he could place them
in those states,

and basically rerun an election
in each of those states.

-So, they would take...
A role, like,

in rerunning the election.

-That's a thing
that is really taboo...

Which I acknowledge...

Was the use of a uniform
anywhere around...

I mean, I learned that as a kid,

no uniforms around an election.

And bringing in the National
Guard would do that.

Take a team of, say,
four guys like that,

and marry them to
a U.S. marshal.

Send them in to Maricopa,
Arizona, to image some machines.

-I've been covering
President Trump for five years,

and I don't know of a darker,

more demented meeting
that he's held.

-Flynn finally got to his feet,
and he said,

"Do you think
the president won?"

And I looked around, and nobody
would answer the question.

-The meeting got so heated

it almost actually ended up
in a physical fight.

-I stood up shoulder to shoulder
with Flynn.

I had a b*tch slap ready if he
needed to be b*tch-slapped.

He's a terrible man.

And by the way, Sidney,
at one point,

got up on her feet,
and gave them a tongue-lashing.

-By the time Cipollone
and other White House officials

left after midnight,
they were, quote,

"fully prepared
for the mad possibility

that Trump might name
Sidney Counsel...

Sidney Powell
special counsel."

-A little more than an hour
after Mrs. Powell, Mr. Giuliani,

General Flynn, and the others
finally left the White House,

President Trump sent the tweet
on the screen now.

Telling people to come
to Washington on January 6th.

"Be there," he instructed them.

"Will be wild."

The tweet led to the planning

for what occurred
on January 6th.

-I'm gonna shock you.
I've come to like him.

I came to like him.

-The least shocking thing
you've said, to be clear.

-Well, to me, I knew him as
the TV guy,

and I wanted nothing
to do with that.

He's actually... in person,
he was a very, like, modest

and gentlemanly type guy,
good listener.

-Having failed to convince
the president

to seize voting machines,

Byrne, Flynn, and Sidney Powell
instead turned their attention

to spearheading an audit
in Maricopa County.

-This is gonna be a big week.

Maricopa gets delivered.
Let's all see.

Mike, will you agree that,
if they find nothing...

I'll come out an apologize.
- Yeah.

I mean, I'll stand there
with Patrick,

on a...
On an international stage,

and say,
"We were wrong."

-"And I'm sorry that we put
the country through this."

-Right.

-But if we're right, maybe...

Maybe there's another
course of action.

-The Arizona Senate
granted them an audit

conducted by a cyber team
funded by Byrne and Flynn.

-By the end of the audit,
the only discrepancy they found

was more votes for Joe Biden.

But Patrick remains
a true believer.

-So, since we
recounted Maricopa,

do we feel confident in it, now
that you got to do your recount?

-Oh, not at all.
Are you kidding?

Are you kidding?
This is the biggest...

I've never seen such a shut down
on the truth.

Guess what?

All those paper ballots
were photographed...

Digitally photographed,
high speed, high res,

by Doug Logan at the beginning.

-That seems like a liability.

We just let this guy do that?

-No, oh, this was
the most careful...

That's another.

Which of these many myths
do you want me to debunk first?

Can we focus on one first?

-Let me ask you
about those ballots.

I looked into this
pretty seriously.

How'd we get these ballots?
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.

-I would tell you,
except I don't think I'm ready

to trust you
for about the five days

it would take me to trust you.

-I ain't got sh*t to do
for five days.

-As it turns out,
neither did Patrick Byrne,

so we decided to follow
the money behind everything

we've been seeing this season.

And things got
a little unhinged.

-The naming of cats
is a difficult matter.

It isn't just
one of your holiday games.

You may say, in fact, that I'm
mad as a hatter when I tell you

a cat must have three
different names.

-The three of us can do better
than that, I think.
