[thunder rumbling]

[ominous music playing]

[engine starts]

THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

[suspenseful music playing]

Hey, guess where I'm headed right now.

Yes, I got it.

[chuckles]

No, it's right now.

I'm going in and doing it now.

It's the whole package.

I'm getting a proper interview.

This is the first in-depth interview

with the CEO of Hartmann Finance, ever.

Yes, thank you.

FIVE YEARS AGO

[Leon] This is fantastic.

Hey, smile a little.

The air is fresher, there's more space,

it's more cost-effective. Huh?

[Katja] More space for Bolt to run around.

Mom, it's not all sad.

Look on the bright side.

[Leon] Hey, we agreed

that this was a smart move.

A new start, new possibilities.

You can start a yoga group

and make some money again.

Come on.

We might even be able to afford

a bottle of champagne once in a while.

Hey

I'm a city girl.

I don't know how to live in the country.

How do you live out here?

Our friends will never

come all the way out here to visit us.

We'll never get any visitors.

- Hey, stop it.

- [Molly] Stop what?

[Leon] You make it sound

like this is my fault.

Are you saying it's my fault?

[Leon] Who insisted on maxing out our loan

just to live in Vinderen?

Don't go there.

Who took out three loans

with 15 percent interest

- to live in Vinderen?

- You want to do this here?

Hello. We just wanted to say hello.

[Leon] We're just having

a little discussion.

We wanted to see who was moving in.

Yeah.

Nobody has lived here for

It must be 15 years now, hmm?

Yeah, 15 years.

How does it look inside?

Is it Heh, is it inhabitable?

[Leon] Oh, for sure.

- Well

- It's nice.

There is a lot to be fixed, but

I like to work with my hands.

Mm. You won't have to do it alone.

- [Leon] What?

- [Mr. Kloppen] I'll call the neighbors.

Then we can do it together.

Okay? Does tomorrow work?

- At noon?

- [Leon] How nice.

Chipping in. Then we can barbecue.

Oh, it'll be fun. [chuckles]

- [Mr. Kloppen] Well, look at that!

- Yes, Katja. Say hello to

Well, who is this? Look. Hi, little buddy.

Aren't you pretty?

[chuckling]

Isn't that good?

Welcome to the neighborhood

to you, too. Yes.

[chuckling]

[door closes]

Okay, I can live here.

I can absolutely live here.

[Leon] These walls have soul.

They're still outside.

[Leon] Who?

[Molly] The neighbors.

Okay, I think we can agree

they were a bit strange.

- [Katja] What? They were super nice.

- [Leon] Yes.

[chuckles] Not invasive at all?

Inviting themselves to a barbecue

after three seconds?

[Leon] Stop it.

They wanted to help out with the house.

When did you start turning down free help?

I just thought it was a bit weird

how he talked to Bolt.

So intense.

So he's a dog person.

And she stood there with her cat.

"Ha, ha."

- Like she was Ret*rded.

- [Katja] Mom!

[Leon] This will be great for all of us,

Molly. Just give it some time.

[Katja] Come on, Mom. Tag along.

Why don't we all walk Bolt?

Molly

Molly. It'll all work out.

- [Bolt whining]

- Guys, Bolt is losing his patience.

[Leon] Okay?

We have to stay positive.

[sighs]

[door closes]

Okay. Stay positive.

A new place.

That's positive, at least.

[screams]

Oh, f*ck!

Yuck!

- Come on, Bolt.

- [barking]

Do you think many will show up?

I don't know. It's a workday.

I don't think too many will show up.

Yeah.

[crowd chattering]

Yeah, we must deal with those. And those.

Those are nice.

Back here, this is where we'll barbecue.

Come on. Here we are.

[chattering]

There. And then I'll take the other one.

[Leon] Oh

Oh, my God. It melts in your mouth.

What kind of meat is this?

- It's Kobe beef.

- Oh. Isn't that very expensive?

[Mr. Kloppen chuckles]

[chattering]

[birds squawk]

[horse whinnies]

[dog yips]

[Mrs. Kloppen] Here you are, my friend.

All by yourself. [chuckles]

Yeah. I'm not quite like Leon. I need time

to get used to new surroundings and stuff.

[Mrs. Kloppen]

Oh. I totally get that. [chuckles]

Sorry if we seem a bit too eager.

You must think we're crazy.

Hanging over your hedge

like some curious hens.

[all chuckle]

No, no. It's fine.

- I've been thinking.

- [Molly] Hmm?

If you have any questions about

well, anything. Life in the countryside

you're welcome to ask.

Okay.

Well, there is one thing.

Like

what's the deal with all the animals?

What do you mean?

[Molly] I've heard there are a lot

of animals in the country.

But they are everywhere.

Oh, no, that's

That's just how it is.

[Mrs. Kloppen chuckles] You never know

when they'll be useful, you know.

[chuckling]

Incredibly nice people.

Isn't it a bit strange

that so many showed up

on a regular Monday?

In the middle of the day. Don't they work?

Well, I don't know.

Maybe that's how things are out here.

Maybe small towns work flexible hours.

And they smile absolutely all the time.

So, there's something wrong

with that, too? Smiling?

I don't like how they're all

always petting their pets.

Do you know what Mrs. Kloppen said?

"You never know when you'll need them."

[Molly sighs]

I'm sorry.

I I'm really trying to like it here.

But it won't work.

Molly-Polly.

I know this wasn't the plan.

But we will end up in the city again.

- We will?

- Yes, of course.

Sooner or later.

We just need to get our finances sorted.

- You know what?

- I promise we'll be back in the city in

five, six years.

[Mrs. Kloppen] Let's cross our fingers

and hope for the best. [chuckles]

I've prepped Monsen for months.

[Mrs. Kloppen speaking indistinctly]

[suspenseful music playing]

[meow]

[twigs snap]

[gasps]

- Hello?

- What are you doing here?

What are you doing?

This is not good.

- She lives here now.

- Yes.

She would have found out, sooner or later.

[nervous chuckle]

What you'll learn today,

you must never tell anyone.

You'll have to promise. Do you promise?

Yes, okay. I promise.

The thing is,

Horgen is built upon the remains

of an old Viking village.

And that stone you saw in the forest today

is their old sacrificial stone.

They sacrificed animals upon it.

And sometimes even humans.

For good fortune.

But then

four years ago, Johan's dog got cancer.

Johan is the guy up the road

with the Asian lady

[woman] Anyway, anyway, Johan took the dog

to the woods and put it down.

He shot her, on the sacrificial stone.

The next day,

he won the lottery, 2.1 million kroner.

So, the sacrificial stone worked.

- Of course, the whole town heard.

- So we started sacrificing our animals,

when we needed some luck.

But never too much.

Never so much that it draws attention.

[laughs] But like

Okay, so, if you sacrifice something

then you win money?

Yes.

You have to be careful.

What do you mean?

You could turn greedy. Lose control.

Just knowing there is a stone in the woods

that can solve all of your problems

If you're not careful,

the stone can change you.

[clucking]

Hello?

WENT TO PICK UP THE RES

[grunts]

- [container clunks]

- [sighs in relief]

[suspenseful music playing]

[music swells]

- [hammer smashes]

- [groans]

Ugh.

[spits]

Mm.

Oh. sh*t.

Hi. How may I help you?

Scratch tickets.

Yes, I know about the stone.

- So, then you know you also have to

- Yeah, I'll be careful.

- Can I get a Flax scratch ticket?

- Twenty-five kroner.

[coins clink]

[Molly] Fifty?

Fifty kroner for k*lling an animal?

What kind of animal was it?

A mouse. I caught it in the basement.

Or a rat, or something.

Doesn't it work with mice?

[Mrs. Kloppen] Yes, it does.

But the reward is naturally tied

to the stakes.

[woman] A mouse?

- That's a bit cheap.

- Yes.

It has to be an animal

you have a bond with.

One you care about.

[sighs]

- [Katja] Where does this one go?

- In the living room.

Wanna go for a walk? Yeah?

Let's take a walk.

[whining]

Come on up here. Hey. Come here.

Good job.

- We'll take that off.

- [yelping]

There.

Let's see. Okay.

There. Down!

- [whining]

- [panting]

[shudders]

[whining intensifies]

Stay positive.

This is a good thing.

- [grunts]

- [Bolt yelps]

[moans]

- [ominous drum beats]

- [hammer clatters]

[breathes shakily]

- [gulps]

- [ominous drumming continues]

I'll have a scratch ticket.

[clerk] Very well.

You know what? When is the deadline

for handing in a lottery ticket?

In four minutes.

Okay.

- [Katja] But, Dad, I'm worried.

- [Leon] It'll be fine.

Bolt has been out on adventures before.

He always comes back.

Yes, but we're in a new place.

And it's been two hours.

[Leon] Okay. We'll take another look.

Mom, are you coming with us?

We're looking for Bolt.

No, I I don't feel so good.

- Are you sick?

- I'm just a bit I'm a bit nauseous.

[Leon] Ah.

- Hope you won't get worse.

- Good luck.

I hope you find him.

[door closes]

But to play for the jackpot,

the lucky number has to be drawn.

The lucky number tonight is 17.

So, cross your fingers and toes

and hope number 17 turns up.

And we're off.

And it's 15.

Here comes 17, which is the lucky number.

This is going to be exciting.

Forty-six. Forty-six.

[laughs excitedly]

Yes, yes!

[exhales nervously]

Three. Three.

- Oh, f*ck!

- I wonder if someone at home is grinning.

Yes. Yes, they are.

- Forty-four. Forty-four.

- Yes!

[squeals]

Okay, okay.

Come on, 16, 16

Oh

Twenty-seven.

And we'll draw the additional numbers.

- The first one is 22 22.

- No.

- No.

- And 42 42.

Today's numbers are: three, 15, 17

[Molly] What the f*ck!

I've just k*lled the family dog

for f*cking 3775 kroner!

Hell, that's less than we paid for him.

You said I would win more

if I had a bond to the animal!

[chuckles]

Yes, but But did you love the dog?

Y-Yes.

[scoffs]

It was my family's dog.

I I liked the dog.

Yes, I let Anyway!

Katja loved that dog

more than anything on this earth!

[Mrs. Kloppen] Yes, exactly.

So, if Katja had sacrificed the dog,

she would have become a millionaire.

The more we love them,

the more we win when we sacrifice them.

That's why we pet them all the time.

[kisses]

[eerie music playing]

[door opens]

[Leon] It's too dark.

We'll search tomorrow, okay?

Sleep tight.

[door closes]

What is it?

[sighs]

I think I've done something

very bad.

What?

Very, very bad.

I

[exhales heavily]

Oh, my God.

You have to come with me to the woods.

- Come on.

- But why?

- [whimpers]

- What?

[sighs heavily]

- It's about Bolt.

- Has something happened to Bolt?

Bolt

Bolt is dead.

- What?

- Shh.

Just come. Just come with me.

[door opens, then closes]

Molly. Talk to me. What are we doing here?

What is it?

Oh, my God.

[knife clinks]

Who has?

Leon?

I want you to listen to me.

Okay?

It's the neighbors.

Or like

That's why they have so many animals.

And this is a sacrificial stone

from the Viking era.

- And it works. I mean, it actually works.

- What are you saying?

- Did the neighbors sacrifice Bolt?

- No.

No, I

I just

Christ!

- Did you?

- Yes, but it works!

For real. So, if you could just see this

as an opportunity

- If we just get a

- Are you completely out of your mind?

No, but it It works. I won!

I mean, I won the lottery, 3775 kroner.

- But I didn't know it had to be

- Did you k*ll Bolt for 3775 kroner?

- You have to see this as an opportunity.

- No, hey

Just listen to me.

Don't.

- You're not listening.

- Hey

[Molly] You have to understand, Leon.

You've gone crazy.

You've actually gone crazy.

Leon, I love you.

Leon.

I love you.

[chilling music playing]

- [both grunting]

- [knife clanging]

- [music intensifies]

- [gasping]

[Thomas] Hi.

I have an appointment with the CEO

at 3:00.

Hey, are there any subjects

I should avoid with Hartmann?

You could ask her

how she earned her first million.

[chuckles]

She won't tell you.

I love you, Leon.

[gasps] I love you! I love you, Leon!

I'm Thomas Hatlestad

from Dagens Næringsliv.

[Katja] Mom!

- Oh, my God.

- [Molly] No, but, honey

- I'm doing this for us.

- No.

- [Molly] I'm doing this for us.

- Mom.

- Mom! Don't!

- [suspenseful music playing]

- [grunting]

- [knife clanging]

[Molly, screaming] You're dead!

[Katja screams] Mom!

[grunts]

No!

[gasping, screaming]

[panting] I love you.

- [Katja moans]

- I love you.

- [Katja grunts]

- [stone impacts]

[thud]

[Katja whimpers]

[groans]

- [Katja panting]

- [Leon groans]

[breaths shakily]

But you've also experienced

great tragedies in your life.

Your mom turned psychotic.

And then, just a year later,

your dad disappeared without a trace.

Yes, it's incredibly sad.

[purring]
