[Erik] The family is exiting the house.

-[Dre] Nice out.

-[Shirley] Yes, it is.

[Erik] They're headed to the car.

Go ahead and roll out.

[upbeat music playing]

Anaré is leaving his house right now

with his mom and his boyfriend

and he has no idea his whole house

is getting a makeover today.

My accomplice Dre's sole mission is to

keep the family away from the house

from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

-[Dre] Anything need to go back here?

-Nah.

[Danielle] Any longer than that,

Anaré's gonna know something's up.

So our team has been preparing for months

to pull off this one-day renovation.

[Dre] I'd like to nominate Anaré,

because he's always giving to others

and never asks

for anything in return.

[Danielle] Dre told Anaré he was

submitting him for a home makeover show

but he never told him he was chosen.

He loves his community,

he loves his family.

Most importantly,

I love Anaré because of his heart.

He's always gonna be that person

in your corner, rooting you on,

just trying to make

your day a little easier.

He does that for literally everyone.

I'm Anaré Holmes. I'm a firefighter EMT.

I am the first person in my family

to own a house.

We grew up in apartments my whole life.

My father gave me the idea

and the importance of home ownership.

Dad had a thousand projects

he wanted to get done around the house.

But he passed away

before he could finish any of them.

[expectant music playing]

[Anaré] The people who live with me

right now are my mom and my boyfriend.

[Shirley] Dre, if you want,

you could crack those eggs.

Make yourself useful. [laughs]

So, mom, we gave her the room

that was on the main level

because I just could not live with myself

with her going up and down stairs.

We've tried to make it cozy.

And then my spot in the attic

with the air mattress.

[Dre] Anaré spends

a lot of time helping others

and his home has been neglected.

But that's just

the type of person that he is.

Here is the wood paneling

that we would like updated.

I mean, I don't know anybody

who's still doing this, do you?

Tile is just coming up.

You can see the cabinets.

One's about to

just fall off the rails here.

The kitchen is, like, a tight space.

It's time to just rethink

how we can make it more open,

make it so that we can

do some entertaining.

We got trucks, our team, and just one day!

-[Paige] Ooh! I can't wait. Let's begin.

-[Erik] All right. We gotta pack stuff up.

[Danielle] Let's get this thing going.

We got to move, all right.

-[Adair] Thank you. Thanks, Danielle!

-[Danielle grunts]

I'm drowning in socks. [laughs]

[Erik] Drowning in socks?

I can honestly say

that's not a problem I have.

He's never gonna run out of socks.

Man, we just got in this house

and I'm sweating already.

[Erik] We gotta get this stuff out.

Move fast, fast, fast, you guys.

There's a lot we gotta do

before we even get this thing cut out.

[Nick] I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

-[saw whirring]

-What are you doing?

-Hey!

-I thought you liked plants!

-Why are you cutting down the bushes?

-This is k*lling me, Danielle.

But if all this plant material

and all this stuff is here,

my guys can't come in and stain the house.

-So this has to be fully cleared.

-That's a big problem. Okay.

But if we pull it off,

this brick is going to look so, so good.

It's gonna be so slick and sexy.

-And stand out! Okay!

-So slick and sexy.

[Danielle] There's no way we could

make over an entire house in a day

unless we spent months

prepping at this warehouse.

Okay, so this is Anaré Holmes.

He lives in a 1920s bungalow

with his mom and his boyfriend, Andre.

This house has not been

renovated since the '90s,

so there's going to be a lot of work.

This dude deserves every bit of help

we can give him, though.

[Paige] That's true.

Where are we starting

in the front of the house?

Curb appeal, curb appeal, curb appeal.

We're going to stain all that brick white,

vibrant accents to that front.

We're gonna plant it up

and we're gonna add that red door

leading into the interior.

[Erik] Blue, man, that's a bold move.

Honestly, there's so much

brick on this street.

Why don't we paint the entire exterior,

add some more plants in front,

trim some of these trees up a bit?

Because I want this house

to shine on the exterior.

[Adair] Right? Okay, for the interior,

I'm gonna lighten everything in the house,

brighten it up, all new furniture.

We need to open up the kitchen.

He loves to entertain.

That's not an entertainer's kitchen.

So we open this whole thing up.

-[Paige] Oh!

-Get rid of this wall and make this open.

And make sure Anaré has

the entertainer's kitchen he deserves.

Okay, so now we're in the main bedroom.

Remember, Anaré gave up

the main bedroom for his mom.

What we're gonna do

is we're gonna bring the light in.

We're gonna freshen up the room

with some fresh paint

and add all new furniture.

Now, take us upstairs, Paige.

So this couple lives in the attic,

which would be fine if the attic

was bigger and had more to it.

But it's it's so cramped.

And they call it a "suite."

Now I don't see anything sweet about this.

-[Paige] I know.

-Right? And he's g*y, right?

And everybody says

everybody says g*y men have style.

We're supposed to just magically

-And this just debunks the whole thing.

-[Paige] Okay, back to the point.

So the idea that you are

living in the attic is kind of

I don't know, it gives off that

"Creepy upstairs,

not a lot of sun exposure."

So hear me out.

This homeowner has done

so much for other people

that he deserves something really big

and really special.

This is the special project.

It is a balcony window found in Poland.

And when you put three of them together,

it adds 40 square feet

to the room upstairs.

Wow.

You went to Poland?

I didn't go to Poland,

I went on a website.

-[Erik] A video then.

-[laughs]

We just took this from a drab,

dusty attic situation,

to now a beautiful resort-style suite.

I do just want to point out

you're asking me to

cut a giant hole out in the ceiling,

put in this gigantic heavy structure,

add this flooring,

bump this whole wall structure out.

There's a lot going on there,

there's a lot of variables.

Don't you giggle.

I'm laughing because I'm like,

"Here comes the rain."

We have limited time.

We have limited resources.

It's gonna be hard to pull off.

That's all I'm saying.

[clock ticking]

[tools banging]

We're putting a massive window upstairs,

and we need to make sure

that the ceiling can actually hold.

That's not a day job.

Also this is coming down.

-We're getting rid of this, open it up.

-Not something you can do in a day.

This is all gonna go. Go for it.

[grunts]

-That's my contribution.

-You need to hit it harder than that.

[Erik] Yo!

So we got our roof

fully being supported

right where we want to put our window.

-[Erik] Well, that makes life easy.

-[woman] Down the whole line.

-[Paige] This messes us up big time.

-[woman] Get on in there.

[Erik] Yeah.

Well, we can't

do anything about this post,

'cause this is what's holding up the roof.

So we're gonna have to move

the glass dormer over and start here,

work our way that way

which is only 16 inches over.

That's not the end of the world.

The bad news

Somebody's gonna have to tell Adair

that this is gonna require a pole

right through the middle of the kitchen.

So I'm gonna get to work on this.

Figure out how to tell him that.

That is literally

going to break Adair's heart.

Yep. Nothing I can do about it.

-It's either that or the house collapses.

-Great.

[Adair] How's it looking?

We figured it out yet?

[Erik] Uh, well, bad news.

We're gonna have to put a support beam

in right here and drop it.

No, Erik!

That's right where the island is.

There's literally nothing I can do.

The support for the dormer upstairs

literally drops right here.

And without a support beam here,

there's nothing to support that weight.

We're adding 1,400 pounds to the house.

I literally can't do anything about it.

This is our schedule wall.

She rules our lives.

She's pretty but she's mean.

[Erik] I think we need to identify

the major pinch points in here

and where the ripple effects could

come from, 'cause there are a few.

Uh, first and foremost, of course,

is the demo happening in the kitchen.

Then we also have the demo

going on upstairs in the main bedroom.

While we're working on

that glass balcony upstairs,

we can't have folks

down on the deck below,

because it is essentially a w*r zone.

Things could fall off the roof,

tools could fall, scaffolding issues.

We can't have anybody back there

while that's happening.

Then at this point, this is when

we bring in Paige's glass balcony.

Is no one concerned that

design happening at the last 30 minutes,

building at the last 30 minutes,

you're doing stuff at the last 30 minutes?

This is a lot for the last 30 minutes.

Why did we stack it this way?

It feels like the balcony window

is throwing off our whole schedule.

The thing is, is that the balcony window

is non-negotiable.

It's happening.

Balcony window is a non-negotiable.

And I'll tell you why.

Because we're cutting a hole in the roof.

-So it is at that point a non-negotiable.

[Danielle] Dre's gonna be back home

with the family at 7:00 tonight.

That post in the kitchen

is gonna cost us an hour.

We're gonna have to

make up that hour somewhere.

Which means there's

[Adair] Why do we need safety harnesses?

[Erik] Uh, because

Paige had this brilliant idea

You're welcome.

[Erik laughs] of putting on

a glass balcony.

This gigantic heavy structure.

Why do you want the glass balcony?

What's the purpose of it here?

I feel like we've talked so much

about them wanting

and having a little suite upstairs,

so there's nothing more romantic

and beautiful than an outdoor balcony.

Listen, I think this is gonna

open up the space. It's a great idea.

But the biggest issue we have

is that glass does not like to flex.

But we have to get that glass piece

up on the roof.

-[Paige] Right.

-It's gonna take a team of folks.

I can't get a forklift up on that deck.

Having a crane in that situation

would be less than ideal,

'cause I don't know

what the power line situation is.

But we have to get this in there

as fast as possible.

So what we've done

is we've recreated Anaré's roofline.

This is a full-scale replica. Same pitch.

We have a gable exactly over the door

where Anaré's back door is.

And this big pane right here

is a test piece

that replicates the actual glass wall

that we're getting from Poland.

So if something goes wrong,

we don't have time

to order another one on-site.

-[Erik] We have one.

-We have one. We have one.

We're just gonna try to lift it

straight up to see if we can do it.

Because we have to test it here,

so, again, we don't have any

of these delays or issues on the day of.

[Erik] We're gonna try it with three folks

down below and the five of us up top.

which is not what we want.

There's a giant hole in the roof.

Let's just acknowledge

how much bigger it makes this space

and how much sunlight is coming in now.

-It's pretty dope.

-It's fantastic.

-But there's a hole in the wall.

I need you to completely clear people out

and shut down work for 30 minutes.

I'm gonna have three people

on the roof with me,

I'm gonna have three people here with me.

Those are the only six people allowed in.

But mostly there's a big hole in the roof,

we gotta get this patched up.

-[Nick] What?

[Nick] When we tested this,

we were all on a roof,

trying to pick it up,

and it broke, it didn't work.

We didn't think it would be this.

[Danielle and Adair exclaim]

Like, us just wearing these hats

is not going to save us.

[Danielle] Oh, my gosh!

[Erik] Randall and I are gonna

grab the straps, lower it into the corner.

Paige, I need you guys

to make sure we're clear in here,

we're landing in the cleat, okay?

Look at it shaking like that.

[Danielle] I've never even

been on a helicopter! Oh, my gosh!

[Danielle] What are you going to do?

I have to actually

have them cut the cabinet

to accommodate this post.

And then, what we normally do,

the granite countertops

are cut in the warehouse.

-You know, offsite.

-Right. But you gotta do it here.

-[Adair] Yes. Like this

-So this looks like a bundle of problems

waiting to happen. [laughs]

-[Adair] You're helping with interiors.

-[laughs]

[Adair] How do you like

being part pf the design department?

[Nick] You know, I'm as clean

as I'll ever be on a job site.

But I understand

that we gotta get everything in

before we even start staining,

I'm happy to help.

[Adair] Exactly.

-We're gonna set everything on the side.

-[Nick] Yup.

Because we need that bed to be built

before we can actually

set everything and anything else.

-[Nick] Okay.

-I'm gonna go shoeless.

-[Nick] You got some pretty feet, Adair.

So it's not all just fluff and pillows.

[Nick] To be honest, this is

more sweating than I thought I'd be doing.

-Exactly.

[Danielle] I was a painter

for two summers of college.

-[Paige] Really?

-And I was pretty damn good at it too.

-I'm already done, look at that.

-Dang!

[Danielle] All right. It's almost noon,

and Anaré has his hands full

with the honey-do list

at his sister's house.

Dre told him he was gonna pick up lunch,

but really he's sneaking over here to make

sure this house is gonna be done today.

Me and him are gonna

have a lot of explaining to do

if we don't pull this off.

-I'm good. How are you?

-I am safe and all.

-How crazy is this?

-This is amazing.

-Right? We are changing Anaré's home.

-It's unbelievable.

-[Dre] Yeah. That's amazing.

-And you're part of it.

Yes. He's so deserving of it, so

I think he's a great guy.

He does a lot for the community

as far as volunteer work

-for LGBTQ in, um, around Atlanta.

-Nice.

You know, just things like that,

but just don't take the time

to do things for himself.

-Yeah.

-So, I mean, he's just phenomenal.

-Well, you are too, 'cause, look

he gettin' a whole new house!

Oh, my God, this is crazy.

He's like the first one in his family

to be a homeowner?

-Yes. Absolutely.

-So this is a big deal.

It's a real big deal.

It's a big deal for him, but it's

an even bigger deal for his family.

I know that he had a pretty

close relationship with his dad, right?

He did. He did.

There was a lot of things that they wanted

to do in the home is my understanding?

Yeah, his dad, great guy,

very important to everybody,

including myself.

Yeah.

Just really handy and, you know,

he had big plans

for what he was gonna do for the house,

but unfortunately, we lost him.

A part of why I do so much

is because of my father, really.

He passed away in 2019.

And he wanted me to be

a well-rounded kind of man

and know a little bit about everything.

Those of us that have

been able to prosper and make it,

you kind of have a responsibility

to lift up other people

who also may need help.

And so, a part of that

was always community service.

I mean, I grew up and would

go clean the church on Saturday.

I thought everybody in some way gave back.

So me in my role in terms of

doing what I do for the community

just seemed to be a natural fit.

My little achievement wall sits there.

I've got all of my degrees,

honors from the community.

I kept Dad's picture up top,

because him being,

you know, raising me, really changed

the whole trajectory of my life.

So without him,

there wouldn't be anything on that wall.

A lot of the projects he started

never got completed.

-So this is amazing to have this done.

-We gonna come in here.

-We gonna complete those things.

-Yeah.

So that you all can have this home

for not just

the generation that is living now

-Right.

-but for those to come.

Absolutely.

And that's what he wants.

That's important to him, it really is,

for his family and his dad's legacy,

getting all this done. I'm so excited.

-We gonna make it happen. I'm on them.

-That's what I'm talking about.

I'mma need you

to hold him back when I say,

you know, "I need an extra ten minutes."

-I got you.

-Whether that means to go get a pedicure,

or that means to go get some ice cream.

paint this house in one day.

Yeah. I have what I think is the solution.

It works specifically for brick.

You spray it on once, dries one day.

and we get to keep moving.

but we have one shot to get it done.

This is literally supposed to add

But I was limited

to this particular location.

-[Danielle] Guys, what's going on?

I'm having a little

a little bit of a moment.

So the original plan was

for these to be balcony windows

where you could walk fully up,

and when they're open,

you're, like, fully outside.

[Erik] Open them up.

Right, right, right?

Open up those balconies.

Open up the balconies.

-Wow.

-[Adair] Sweet.

What happened?

'Cause you can't do that now.

Because it's not touching

the ground now, it's it's a window.

-And it's just not the vision that we had.

-No.

It wasn't the plan we had.

at the lip of where the window begins.

[Danielle] So that's almost like

This is literally

the entire special project.

We do need to figure out

what we're gonna do

because we're on a time crunch here.

Yep, and so this is a quote

that Anaré's dad actually said.

So we know how much

his dad really meant to him.

We added the quote to the top of it

to make it even more special.

My father always encouraged me

to not put limits on myself.

And one of my early concerns

When I came out to him, I was about 19.

He was one of the first people

that I disclosed my sexuality to.

I remember asking him

if he was gonna throw me out the house,

and he just looked at me like I was crazy.

He said, "Why would I do that?

You're still my son."

And, um, he gave me

a degree of confidence.

It helped me to be

more at ease with myself

and I didn't really care who knew.

And that's why it never bothered me

to be called "the g*y firefighter,"

'cause it was always cool with Dad.

You are a brother, you are g*y man.

And I think he's just gonna feel so good

to know that you were a part of this.

I'm really happy to do it.

You know what I mean?

And I think what you all have in common,

more than anything,

is that you were a firefighter too.

-What?

-[laughing hysterically]

-Just kidding! Go back to work!

-I'm like, "Where's she going with this?"

till the family gets home

and Anaré is moving through that

to-do list faster than Dre can add to it.

[Dre chuckling]

[Anaré] Got an assistant.

-[machine whirring]

-There we go!

-[Dre] Huh! It's working!

-[Anaré laughs]

[Danielle] Eric is busting his butt

on those new stairs.

But that's adding

a bunch of time we don't have.

We're gonna have to hunker down

and make up for it.

our main bedroom balcony window

was actually completely on the ground,

making it a perfect balcony.

to actually bring that

up to the proper height,

which will probably

take me about two hours.

build and design can't coexist up there.

We have design scheduled

we can reassign them

That way we can get our stuff done.

but that's the only way to make up

the two hours you need for the stairs.

will always be a part of you.

a beautiful example for your family.

is that you are yourself.
