01x01 - Cam Newton & Trae Young

Post by bunniefuu »

You showed me your range

so now it's time for me to show you mine.

- Yeah.

- Money bag!

Oh, that's money.
Oh, that's money.

There you go.
-OK.

- MAN: Here comes Cam.

He's in for a touchdown.

- I'm Cam Newton and I play quarterback
in the National Football League.

- MAN: He goes airborne.
He really was Superman on that play.

- I am Trae Young

and I am a professional
basketball player.

- MAN 1: Trae...

He does it!

- All right, Trae, what's good with you?

-What's up, bro?
-My man!

- Feel good?

- Yeah, I am straight, how're you?
- Man, I ain't got no complaints.

-You don’t wanna hear them anyway.
-Yeah.

- So I ain't gonna lie to you.
I'm an avid sports watcher.

I didn't realize you was this tall.

You know what I am saying?
-Yeah.

- But you're damn near eye-to-eye to me.

You know what I am saying?
- Yeah, I get that a lot.

I get that a lot.

So this is a dream we use in warm-ups.

Try to get our handle right.

We get into the gym,
right before our game.

You do a little two-ball dribbling so...

I'm gonna do couple of drills,
you try to match it.

You know what I'm saying?

So the reason why I do a lot of two ba*ls
dribble drill before

I even start sh**ting

is because it makes you, obviously,
work on your feel

for the basketball...

- [Cam squeals]
- [Trae laughs]

...but it also makes you think
while you're doing something out.

- Here we go.

- Oh, yeah. Here we go. Boom.

Just push it right back.

- Now you showin' off.

- I'm not... Do it! Yeah.

All right, we're gonna try something else.

Between the legs, just crossin' it.

It's easy.

For me, as a point guard that to be able
to think while I am dribbling,

so being able to dribble two ba*ls
in two different combinations

just helps me think.

- CAM: Here we go.

- TRAE: Oh, snap.
- Here we go.

- Oh!
- [Cam squeals]

- Here you go.

You got this one, though.

- That's it.

- TRAE: A lot of people when they come in,

the first thing they gonna do,
when they grab a ball,

and start chunking threes.

But your form is all messed up,

you've build bad habits.

So, whenever I am come in to gym,
the first thing I do,

I start close, get my touch right,

then work my way out.

- CAM: I got you.

There we go, there we go.

Hey, you a stubborn old thing…

Work our way out.

- TRAE: So, the further I move out,

I already have my form and my,
my strength.

- Oh!
- TRAE: That was pretty.

Here we go.

Patience is a big thing for me.

Being a point guard or a quarterback,

-you've got to be able to know...
-Right.

- ...where everybody is on the court...

-There we go.
-...and get it organized.

So for me, I can't be in a rush.

- CAM: I feel the same way.

I'm really lookin' sorry out here,
you feel me?

So you at the age of 21,
came to this league at 19.

- Yeah.
- As a point guard,

how have you tried
to perfect your leadership role?

- That's...

Man, if I had a list
of all the most difficult challenges

coming into the league,
that would probably be up there.

Just because of age difference
and how you say I'm-- I'm 19 years old

and I got to be able to lead guys...

Let's go.

For me, I feel like starting
on leading your teammates,

doing that chemistry off the court.

I'm like, "Man! What's up, yo!

You wanna come to the crib,
play some video games...

tryin' to play some cards, whatever."
-Right.

Desperation. Oh, that's money.

Oh! That's money.
-That's where you ended up.

- CAM: That's money.
- There we go.

What kind of leader, like,
would you say you are?

- I'm a big nickname guy.

- Yeah.
- You know what I'm saying?

So permanently, your number on my phone

is Ice Tray.

Ice Tray.

With my team,

I got names goin' from Boss Baby, Kirko,

Cupid, Lovey Dovey...

- Mm-hmm.
- As a leader,

you have to have that connection

with everybody.

All right, so...

listen.

All this is cute,

we goin' to the Gridiron,
you know what I am saying?

- TRAE: All right, bet.

- So just like basketball,
on the football field,

first throw a lot of folks make is,

"Go deep."
-Yeah.

- But for me,

especially coming out of shoulder surgery,

I've taken on this routine,
throughout the whole time,

your arms can't go down.

- All right, bet.

- So straight up, right here.
- Yeah.

- Set go.

So what you're doin' is...
- I have no idea.

- This is to get, kinda,
like the lactic acid

built up in your shoulder.

You're throwing about 80-to-90 ba*ls
in any given practice

so we got to be able to get
our shoulders goin'...

fast.

Like, I'm a year-nine.

You're a year-two.
- TRAE: Mm-hmm.

- I grew up where all we did
was stretch over…

Yeah, then switch.

So now, paddle boat...

- Ooh! Already startin' to burn.

- But now you got
so many different things, and when

you hear about some guys like LeBron
and other people

invested so much into their body,

you see why Brady is who he is.

- Hold on, I can't rest my arm?
- Nah...

- Uh-uh. We goin' straight through.
- All right.

- As a athlete, we try to find
any and everything to have an edge.

You know, in the way you prepare,
the way you stretch,

the way you take care of your body,

your nutrition, everything else.

Now drop 'em.

- Hoo!
- You can feel it, right?

Like, your shoulders.
-Yeah.

- So now, we ready.

So what I start off with,

I don't start throwin'
no 15-to-20 yard passes.

I'll start just how you do,

-tryin' to perfect a small shot...
-Uh-huh.

...and as a quarteback,
we wanna make sure that

everything is tight-compact.
You're using your whole body.

We always practice in perfect worlds,

so mechanics is key.

- Still stand compact though.
- All right.

- You're throwin' it like this.
- Uh-huh.

We wanna stay compact.

Goin' through the same arithmetic,

shoulder roll, stand tight, and compact,

shoulder roll, stand tight, and compact.

-There you go.
-OK.

- You feel me? So now,

you throw the ball harder easy.

Because in a game, it's fourth quarter,

two minutes left,

you're down by four
and somebody's already blitzing,

you've got to be able
to look down that barrel

ignore all of that,

and go through the same stuff.

- That's when techniques
are most important.

- Everything.
- Ooh!

Cam's focusing on a lot of technique and

and me being a point guard is like,
basically a quarterback on my team.

You gotta focus a lot on your technique
and your form and everything

and this is definitely something
I can take away.

- All right, man, so...
you know, you showed me your range

so now it's time for me to show you mine.

- Yeah.

- So we goin' to go,
try to get it in the hole.

- TRAE: Oh!
- Money bag.

Money bag, money bag, money bag.

- Oh!
- Ooh!

- There's always gonna be haters
everywhere you go.

They block your shot.

Last time for the charm.

- Damn! That went through right to it.

All right, here we go.

Let me see if I've got this.
- CAM: Stay tight.

Whao! Far right.

Like my coach say, "You gotta throw it
like you mean it, man."

- All right, here we go. here we go.

-CAM: Oh!

ba*ls! Here you go.

- You know, Cam, you need a receiver,
holler at me

- CAM: I got ya.

Oh!

'Cause I can back you up in quarterback.

I ain't got that in me.

- Well, I say this, man.

I respect you
and I wanna see you ball hard.

You got one more in you?
- TRAE: Yeah.

- There it is.
- Oh!

- CAM: That's money.

- TRAE: Appreciate it, bro.

We both showed
a little bit of our mechanics.

That's what's cool about our sports.

We both have a lot of similarities.

even though
it's a totally different sport.

- Yeah.
- You know I am a big fan. Respect, love.

Continues blessing, my brother.

- CAM: I am gonna try
and hit down the GoPro.
