[grunting]
- I'll just stand over here
while you do that. Go ahead.
[music playing]
- ...what it's all about, baby!
- Just tryna take it. It's fine.
- Crosby! Malkin!
- All right, take it straight.
[cheering]
- COMMENTATOR 1: P. K. Subban's starting
at 2-1-1, short-handed!
And Subban scores!
- I'm P. K. Subban, I'm tall, dark,
and handsome.
And I'm a professional ice hockey player.
That's perfect.
- COMMENTATOR 1: He scored!
Oh, my goodness!
[boxing bell dings]
- COMMENTATOR 2:
Ruiz counters and Joshua's down!
- I'm Andy Ruiz Jr.
and I'm a professional boxer.
- MAN: Yeah, you are!
- [bleep]
- Right, you are.
- COMMENTATOR 2: Your new
heavyweight champion of the world!
- ANDY: When I first got here, I was like,
"Man, what the hell?
I never seen this machine,
I haven't seen that machine.
What am I gonna do?"
What I wanna do, I wanna get the flab,
I wanna make it into muscle.
I'm a bigass guy.
- SUBBAN: Champ!
- ANDY: That's right, baby.
- SUBBAN:
We're not "what you see everyday."
First Mexican
to be a heavyweight champion.
Not even African-American,
African-Canadian hockey player.
But it's the work that you put in.
You shook up the world, man.
That's what champions
are made of, brother.
So... Let's go to work, baby.
- Well, that’s the warrior instinct.
- Fellas, let's tear this up.
So your goal
isn't necessarily hit the floor,
it's making noise with the--
with the waves.
Back, back, back, back up a little.
It's a little bit of a weight shift.
- SUBBAN: As a hockey player,
you have to be well conditioned.
- GUNNAR: Touch it. Touch...
- SUBBAN: You have to be expl*sive,
but you still have to be able to last.
The game's 60 minutes
and in my position I could play
But you also have to be able
to go into the corner
and put someone into the first row.
[breathing heavily]
Gunnar's work on the aerobics,
which allows more oxygen
to get into my legs,
ultimately that allows me
to train longer without getting tired.
- ANDY: Yes, sir.
- GUNNAR: Just get it going first.
Wrists, elbows, shoulders,
find the rhythm.
Yeah, footwork!
- SUBBAN: Oh, yeah!
- ANDY: My trainers, they're all
old school, you know,
we don't use a lot of technology,
equipment.
- All your power is here. Boom!
- ANDY: But I'm willing to try out
new stuff, you know?
- SUBBAN: You're pulling with your glutes
and then snapping up.
Nice!
- GUNNAR: Hip drive. Hip drive. Hip drive.
- SUBBAN: Yeah, Andy.
You steppin' into a gym with workouts
you never done before,
it's not easy.
He was completely unfazed.
[grunting]
Everybody has to understand their
body type and where their strengths are.
- Speed. Now we're living...
- SUBBAN: Sometimes it's not about
just being in the best shape.
- There we go.
- SUBBAN: You can be in the best shape,
but if you don't understand
how your body works,
you're gonna lessen your chances
of winning, right?
- Get 'em. Five, four...
- Champ workouts right here.
That's what it's all about, baby!
- You're done.
That's a great set.
- Yes!
- I feel that everything
that we've been doing...
is like all of the things that I needed.
- I love it. Oh, boy. Good job.
Love it.
Watching you in the gym,
I know that some of these exercises
are different, I can see the mental part
of where you're able to connect things
and process things.
But also how you distribute
your energy and your power.
You don't see it on the outside,
but insi-- this guy is a monster.
- I'm a loving guy, but inside
of the ring, that's when I turn the dog--
I, I let the dog out, you know?
- Oh, I love that!
- I had a few amateur hockey guys
that ask me for help.
Like, "Hey, how do you punch?"
More straight punches, you know?
- Well, dude,
you gotta show me some stuff.
- Yeah, we are. That's why we're here.
- How should my body be?
So, do I come from here, like this?
Or is it just quick?
- Yeah, I think you should--
- Can you show me?
- You should shift your body right here.
[groans]
- Jesus Christ.
Jeez.
- Everybody underestimates me
because of the way that I look.
And then when they see me inside the ring,
and I throw this fluid of combinations
there, everybody's just like, "Wow!"
- SUBBAN: I wanna develop
some more quickness with my hands,
because a big part of my game,
is my one-timer.
My slap shot.
Quickness with my hands means that
my stick handling is gonna be better.
That means my release is gonna be better.
- You're fluid on your feet, so...
you'll be good.
Nice.
I think boxing is gonna help him out
with a lot of the footwork, the speed,
especially him, you know,
he has to have a lot of balance.
Lot of weight transfer.
The mentality as well,
you know, becoming a champion.
Oh, this guy's a natural!
- GUNNAR: Oh, you don't want this smoke.
- After he duck, throw that... curve.
- Aah.
- I love boxing, man.
- So a heavy bag, so this is one
of my favorite drills.
You throw a little bit of punches.
Thirty seconds.
- SUBBAN: Bap, bap, bap.
- Until-- When they say, "Go!"
That's when you start
throwing... opposite.
Right here.
From right here... angles.
[grunting]
Palms, you know? For 30 seconds.
- Yeah.
I'll just stand over here
while you do that. Go ahead.
- Constantly throwing punches.
When it's 30 seconds...
work the body.
Give it a little try.
- I should just hit it
with my burst, maybe.
- There you go. Little punches like that.
Thirty seconds.
Get your heart rate going.
When we say cambio...
There you go.
Nice.
All right, switch. Normal punches.
Normal punches. Normal punches.
- [pants] This is tiring.
- Go harder now.
- Is that almost mimic
when you're in, like, the tenth round,
and you're like, throwing punches,
and both you guys are tired?
- Forcing yourself.
It's mostly, uh, mental
and if you're exhausted,
you just gotta go with it, man.
Again. Just tryna take it. It's fine.
- Crosby! Malkin!
- ANDY: All right, take it straight.
- Ovechkin!
Gunnar! Gunnar's face!
His stomach! His throat!
- ANDY: That's what I'm talking about.
- Who's the champ?
Not me.
- Good job!
- SUBBAN: What I've learned from just
being around him a little bit is that
mental toughness is really,
really important.
There's always a lot of doubters,
you know, a lot of haters and critics.
And just like him, you know,
I've had to learn
how to deal with it
in a constructive way.
You know, that's what
I've kinda taken from him is that
even when I'm in my best shape,
I can be even stronger here.
I almost have played 700 games
in the National Hockey League.
Haven't won championship yet, so...
that's, that's why for me, like...
- You will.
- And I mean it. You walk into the gym,
it means something to athletes
to be around champions.
I don't care if you're a champion
for a day or for a lifetime.
When you become a champion,
that lasts forever.
So, don't-- Just remember that, like,
regardless of what...
[bleep] people say.
- Yeah. There's always gonna be doubters.
- That's it, man.
- That's why Iron Sharpens Iron dude.
- That's it.
- Yeah.
