- Well, yeah, I do.

- That's why we're here.

Delete is looking to plant a tree

in your honor for Arbor Day.

- I am?

- That's what you told us.

I, uh, I just wanted to, um, surprise Buzzy!

- What's Harbor Day?

- Arbor day!

It's the day you plant a tree for your best friend.

- And since you know so much about trees,

we thought you could help Delete

pick out just the right one.

- Um, yeah!

- What a glorious day, huh?

A perfect day to go tree hunting.

- In my game, there's lots of trees and animals.

- Well, there are fewer animals here,

partly because there aren't any trees.

- Look around, Buzz.

Maybe you'll see a tree you like.

- Mm-hmm.

The kind of tree Delete can plant for you on Arbor Day.

- Yeah, 'cause we're such good friends, right, Buzzy?

Yes, Buzz is a hero!

- Real trees are heroes too, you know?

Real trees are the strong, silent heroes of the environment.

- Real terrific trees?

- Oh yeah.

Trees are terrific.

They help make healthy soil

and they hold back water to help prevent floods.

- Trees also provide shade

and keep us cool on really hot days.

- And here's the best part!

Trees are kind of like us.

They take in air, good air and bad air.

- And they trap the bad air in their bark and leaves.

When they breathe out,

they breathe clean air out into the environment.

- Real trees are a beautiful thing, Buzz.

[video game beeping]

- Sounds like it!

Let's see if we can find a good one

for D.D. to plant in my honor.

- Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

We're gonna find a tree for Arbor Day! [giggles]

- Okay, okay.

This is looking more like my game.

Trees everywhere.

- Yep, and where there are trees, there are animals.

Check out the squirrels!

It smells sweet and woodsy.

There are so many trees, I can't make up my mind

which one is the best.

- I know what we can do.

- I love my game tree!

- Okay, then if we find a real tree,

just like your game tree, we'll love that one too.

- Sounds like a plan!

- Okay, here's what we'll do.

you like about your game tree.

What I love about my game tree is

that it's got really thick, strong branches.

And big, so I can grab onto them when I climb!

is really rough with deep grooves.

- Oh, and the leaves!

I just love the leaves!

They're kind of shaped like an oval!

And the edges are like teeth!

That leaf does have a pointy tip,

but it's not oval shaped.

- Don't worry, Delete.

- Yeah, big, strong branches, so you can climb up.

- Oval leaves with pointy ends.

- And toothy edges!

- [All] What?

- This Sprucemore is going to be my tree, right?

- Right.

- Well, it's already in the ground,

so there's nothing to plant.

- That's okay, Buzzy.

- Inez, what did you tell me about Arbor Day?

- I told you it's the day you plant a tree

for your best friend!

One we can plant in the ground!

I'm Digit! [chuckles]

- I'm so glad you moved back, Booker!

We were best buds when we were five.

- I'm so glad!

I've missed you and how the seasons change.

In Florida, you don't see so much color on trees.

- [Bianca] Amazing, right?

- I have to admit,

I don't really understand why green leaves turn colors.

- I did this really cool science experiment

in school that helped me understand.

Wanna try it?

- Sure!

I love science and I love experiments.

- Great!

Well, we need some green leaves.

Can you get some?

Mom, we're doing an experiment.

Will you please help?

- [Mother] Sure!

- First, we need to tear up the leaves

and put them in a blender.

Please pour rubbing alcohol on the leaves and blend.

- Okay, I can do that.

[blender whirring]

- [Booker] The liquid turned green!

- [Bianca] Now we need to cut paper towels into strips

and put the ends into the jar.

- [Booker] Now what?

- We go outside to play.

- That's part of the experiment?

- Sort of.

We should see the results in two hours.

- It's two o'clock now,

so we have until four o'clock to play.

So that's like what happens with leaves!

At first, they're green and then they turn yellow!

But why?

- The green in the leaves is called chlorophyll.

It's a chemical that helps trees make food

using energy from the sun.

- Photosynthesis, right?

- Right.

And in addition to chlorophyll,

they're also other chemicals,

orange ones and yellow ones in the leaves.

But the chlorophyll covers them up,

so what do you think happens in the fall?

- The days get shorter, so there's less sunlight.

- And the trees stop making food using green chlorophyll.

The chlorophyll breaks down,

meaning it dissolves in the leaves.

- I still don't get why leaves turn yellow.

- After chlorophyll breaks down in the leaves,

the chlorophyll is absorbed back into the tree.

- So the green color fades and then we can see other colors.

- You got it.

- That is incredible, better than magic!

So besides providing food, shelter, and oxygen,

trees make our world more colorful.

From now on, whenever I pass a tree, I will say thank you.

Well, maybe not out loud.
