- Most of us think deserts

are always dry, dull and colorless.

That not much of anything lives there.

But at Judge Trudy's Roadrunner Ranch in Sensible Flats,

a desert garden has sprung to life.

And this is the prickly peach cactus,

one of Judge Trudy's most important

and beautiful treasures of all.

- I've always dreamed of having a garden

just like that one.

- Well, it's dry here in the Northern Frontier

just like in Sensible Flats!

- So, if Judge Trudy can have a garden there,

why can't we have a garden here?

[country music plays] [horse neighs]

- Howdy, earth slickers!

And you too, Digit!

Welcome to Road Runner Ranch!

- Thanks for the invitation, Judge!

We can't wait for some fun in the Old West!

- Yeah, and some rest!

It's not easy being the CyberSquad.

- Well, you've come to the right place!

- Okay! Let's get dusty and dirty!

- Maybe just a little dusty and dirty.

[chuckles]

[horse neighs] - Yee-haw!

- Yikes!

[country music plays]

[horseshoe clangs] [hands clap]

- You gals are great at tossing horseshoes!

[laughs] - Thanks, Judge!

- [Digit] A little help here!

- Yeah, I think I need to work on my yee-haw.

- Not to worry, Dig.

- The pictures of your garden are amazing, Judge.

We can't wait to see it up close!

- How about right now?

Gotta take an inventory!

- Inventory?

- The first of every month I take account

of all the plants and animals in my garden

to see if there are any changes!

Who wants to help?

- Mm. [sighs]

- We've gotta do this, Buzzy!

We gotta plant a garden!

- Ah!

With the boss being away

at the Cyber-Villain Convention,

it's the perfect time to do it!

- [Judge Trudy] All these plants

are native to the environment here.

[Bees buzz]

Means they've been growing here

in the desert for hundreds of years!

That's why my garden is so healthy and beautiful!

Now spread out, and tell me what you see

so I can take a count.

[Inez laughing] [squirrel screeching]

- Two squirrels! And really cute ones too.

- [Jackie] Two ground squirrels.

Same as last month!

A butterfly and a bunch of bees over here!

- One butterfly and a bunch of bees

at the Sensible Flats fair flower.

No change there.

[gasps] - Wait!

Three hummingbirds, incoming!

[Judge Trudy hollers]

- Three? How wonderful!

That's one more than last month.

Birds and insects drink the nectar

from the flowers, and carry it pollen

to other plants to help 'em grow!

The more, the better!

[feet pattering]

- Was that a running cyber bird?

- Yep! A roadrunner!

Don't call this Roadrunner Ranch for nothin'!

- Only one?

- Uh, [laughs] make that two.

- Two it is!

No change from last month.

- It's in a nest of some kind.

- That's the Jiminey Tree.

Roadrunners and other birds like to nest there!

Like that Oriole!

Glad to see she's still here.

- You have any cybirds like me last month?

- Afraid not, Dig! [laughs]

But I'll add one for this month!

- Smart how they build their nest

with sticks leaves from other plants in the garden!

- Did you have any turtles last month?

- He's a desert tortoise, Matt, not a turtle.

My only one!

- He's not in a hurry is he?

- Don't you worry none, I'll get there.

- Um, I'm Matt.

- Pleased to make your acquaintance.

[fruit squelches]

- Must be tasty!

- It's a prickly peach cactus.

Had six of 'em last month.

- One, two, three, four, fix, and six!

- Looks like they like it too!

- Oh, there's Merlin and Loretta!

Lots of cyber critters eat from the prickly peach cactus,

and use its shade to rest and keep cool.

- Woo! No wonder, it's pretty hot in the desert.

- Since these cactus plants provide food and shade,

I guess they're really important to have here, huh?

- It's the way it is in any ecosystem.

Like my garden!

Everything that lives here,

plants, birds, insects, and reptiles,

they all work together.

Fact is, they all depend on each other to survive!

- When are y'all leaving town?

- Tomorrow night.

- Okay. I'll tell you what.

We'll do a special farewell concert

for y'all at sunset tomorrow.

[gasps] - What?

- No way

I am Sylvia, cyber plant specialist.

- Thanks. No help needed.

- We just need plants for our garden.

- We got our list.

- Well what kind of climate do you have?

What kinda soil?

Sun or shade?

It's very important!

- We did good, Dee-Dee.

- Yep!

Our garden's gonna look like Judge Trudy's in no time.

- How deep should the hole be?

- Uh, it doesn't matter.

As long as the plants go in the ground.

Let's plant another one.

- How far apart should the holes be?

- Well, five is my favorite number,

so let's make them five cyber feet apart!

- My favorite number's nine.

- Okay.

Let's plan them nine cyber feet apart.

We gotta measure.

We don't have the prickly peach cactus

like Judge Trudy has!

- Whoa, the water soaks into the soil so fast!

What happened to all the prickly peach cactus plants?

Judge, come quick!

There are holes where the prickly peach

cactus plants used to be.

- How many cactus plants were here yesterday?

- Let's see.

According to the inventory we took, there were six.

- Now there's only one

and one, two, three, four, five holes!

- It's supposed to be six.

So five are definitely missing.

- Wow!

Five beautiful prickly peach cactus plants.

Just what we needed!

- Yeah.

Now our gardens really starting to look like Judge Trudy's.

- This is a disaster!

We gotta restore the biodiversity to my garden!

- Bio-what-sity?

- Biodiversity?

It's a big word, I know.

But its meaning is really simple.

Bio means life and diversity means variety.

- Wait, so your garden, this whole thing,

is the ecosystem, right?

And biodiversity is all the different things,

like plants and animals and insects that live here?

- Exactly!

Like I said, all the things that live here

need each other.

- [Jackie] Like the plants need the birds and insects

to carry their pollen to other plants so they'll grow.

- [Digit] And the road runner needs

the Jiminey tree to nest in.

- And Shelly, Merle, and Loretta,

need the prickly peach cactus for food and shade!

- Yep!

And one cactus plant isn't enough to feed 'em all!

We gotta find those cacti

and get 'em back here before it's too late!

[bird caws]

- It might already be too late.

Shelly's gone!

- I don't see Merle or Loretta neither!

- Maybe they've gone looking

for food and shade somewhere else.

- Could very well be.

When one link goes missing from an ecosystem,

it can change what happens

with all the other living things.

[animals crash]

And not for the better!

- I just don't understand why our garden looks so bad.

We have all the plans that Judge Trudy has.

- Yeah, I don't get it either.

Let's think.

Hmm. Mm hmm. Hmm.

- Thinking is hard, Dee-Dee.

- Wait! I know what we're missing!

- What?

- A name for our garden!

Judge Trudy's place is called Road Runner Ranch.

- You're right, Dee-Dee.

That must be why our garden doesn't look so good.

It needs a name.

What should we call it?

- I know!

[drum roll]

Rabbit Runner Ranch!

Got a good feeling to it, don't ya think?

[chuckles]

- Now that we got a name, our garden

should start looking just like Judge Trudy's.

- Hope it doesn't take too long.

[yawns]

[Buzz chomps]

- This is taking way too long!

- I have another idea.

we saw for Judge Trudy's garden.

- Good idea, Buzzy!

Maybe that'll make our garden grow better and faster.

- They didn't just disappear.

It's some kind of shopping list of plants.

Buzz was here!

- Buzz?

- Guess we know the varmint who took my cacti.

- Most of us think that parts of the Northern Frontier

are dry, cold, and scary.

Well, they are.

We think that not much lives here,

but not anymore, because,

at the Rabbit Runner Ranch,

something really nice is happening.

What used to be an empty, lifeless backyard,

is now full of plants!

My favorite plant is the prickly peach cactus.

Lots of animals eat its fruit.

Like the cuddly tortoise.

- Ow!

Hm, doesn't look like the video helped.

- Our garden is getting worse and worse!

- Maybe we should of taken all six of these cactus plants.

- Howdy, cyber partners!

[orchestral music plays loudly]

- Oh, ah! Hi! [chuckles]

Look, Dee-Dee!

It's Judge Trudy.

- And the CyberSquad! [chuckles]

How nice of you to come visit?

- My prickly peach cacti went missing from my garden,

and we're trying to track down who took 'em.

- You wouldn't happen to know anything about that,

would you?

- Hmm.

- Um, cactus?

- We have no idea what you're talking about

- Right, Buzzy? [laughs]

- Uh, yeah, right.

We've been here the whole time,

planting our new garden.

[wind howls]

You like it?

- Huh.

Nice try.

But these are the same plants

that are missing from the Road Runner Ranch.

- No way!

These are different ones.

- Yeah.

We got them from the uh, the Garden Center.

- Yeah, I don't think so.

Maybe this will refresh your memory about what happened?

- Oh, I must have dropped that.

[metal clinks]

I mean, I have never seen that before.

- Buzz. That's your note paper with your picture on it.

We found it in Judge Trudy's garden.

Where the cactus plants used to be?

[eerie music plays]

- This was all Dee-Dee's idea!

- No, he took the plants.

- He did it.

- He did it.

- [Buzz And Dee-Dee-] No he did it!

- Enough!

This is your last chance to tell the whole truth,

and nothing but the truth.

- Okay, we confess, we took the plants.

But all we wanted was a pretty garden likes yours, Judge!

- We didn't know how else to get the cactus plants.

They didn't have any at the Garden Center.

Guess we made a bad decision.

- And we're really, really, really sorry.

- Okay, but understand you've done wrong.

Both of ya!

You took something that wasn't yours and that's not right.

You meant well, but that's no excuse.

- So we're not in trouble?

- Tell you what, if you two want a really nice garden,

I can show you how it's done.

But you're gonna have to work hard at it!

- We'll do whatever it takes, we promise!

- Yeah!

And we got plants just like yours, Judge.

- Buzz, what's in my garden is meant to live

in my environment, in the desert.

We need to bring different life to your environment.

- So that your garden is healthy and rich in biodiversity.

- That's what we want too!

A garden that's healthy and rich in biodiversity.

- Yeah, right.

What's biodiversity?

- It means different kinds of life.

Like the life that lives in your garden.

- But first you need to give Judge Trudy

back her cactus plants,

so we can replant them in her garden

before it's too late.

- Here, take 'em all.

- Um, can we just keep one or two?

- Buzz!

- Who knew they had a special section just

for plants that grow in the Norther Frontier?

- Uh huh.

These are the kind of plants that are gonna help

create a healthy garden community

with lots of different kinds of life.

- I'm just sorry the prickly peach cactus plant

doesn't grow in the Norther Frontier.

I wanted them so bad.

- The garden lady said it's because it's too cold there.

That's why!

- Speaking of the garden lady, it's me again!

- Did you happen to see the cyber sunflowers?

- No, I did not.

- I saw them! Be right back.

[propeller whirling]

[wheels squeaking] [feet stomping]

- Well, now that my favorite cactus snack is back,

- This is my cousin Z.

- Hi.

- When we were younger,

our family spent lots of time together

at a beach on Long Island Sound.

Long Island Sound is a small body of water,

where fresh water, like this river,

meets with salt water from the ocean.

We always had a great time.

- Today we visited a place where we can see animals

that live beneath the surface of the sound.

The Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk.

- First, we saw the harbor seals.

They were so much fun to watch.

- And their numbers are growing

because of laws that protect them.

Keeping the water clean in Long Island Sound

ensures they have plenty of healthy food to eat.

The harbor seals have lots of company in Long Island Sound.

It's hard to believe so many different creatures,

more than species,

share the water right near New York city.

- Yikes!

Those teeth are scary.

- But as you can see, since there are divers in there,

sand tiger sharks are not a threat to humans.

A green sea turtle can get this big, just eating vegetables.

- These moon jellies are so beautiful.

- River otters have thick fur

that keeps them warm in the cold water.

- They look like swimming kites!

[laughing] [water splashing]

We fed rays,

touched a sea star,

and my new favorite, a horseshoe crab.

- Horseshoe crabs have been around

more than million years,

since before the dinosaurs.

- They are a really important source of food

for migrating birds,

which eat their eggs.

- And scientists have found that a substance

in their blood is an important ingredient

for medicine that prevents infections.

- Since they are so important for animals,

as well as humans,

scientists here are exploring ways

to increase their numbers.

- They're figuring out ways to grow

horseshoe crabs in the lab from eggs

- A sign next to the lab asks,

how can you help horseshoe crabs?

- Become a citizen scientist and help us

tag horseshoe crabs each spring.

- We wanted to help.

The lab scientist told us that

anyone can become a citizen scientist

to help collect data for research projects.

Then, she explained how volunteers

put tags on the hard shell of horseshoe crabs,

in a way that doesn't hurt them.

- Once horseshoe crabs from the wild

are tagged on the beach,

scientists can monitor them to understand

their patterns of movement and keep count

of the number living in the Long Island Sound area.

- So we are planning to become citizen scientists.

We'll help out with tagging horseshoe crabs in the spring,

even though it means going to the beach

when the horseshoe crowds gather to lay their eggs,

at midnight.

- So no need to bring the suntan lotion!
