So that's like what happens with leaves.

At first, they are green, and then they turn yellow.

But why?

-The green in the leaves is called chlorophyll.

It's a chemical that helps trees make food

using energy from the sun.

-Photosynthesis, right? -Right.

And in addition to chlorophyll,

there are also other chemicals, orange ones and yellow ones

in the leaves, but the chlorophyll covers them up.

So what do you think happens in the fall?

-The days get shorter...

so there's less sunlight.

-And trees stop making food using green chlorophyll.

The chlorophyll breaks down,

meaning it dissolves in the leaves.

-I still don't get why leaves turn yellow.

-After chlorophyll breaks down in the leaves,

the chlorophyll is absorbed back into the tree.

-So the green color fades and then we can see other colors!

-You got it. -That is incredible.

Better than magic.

So, besides providing food, shelter, and oxygen,

trees make our world more colorful.
