I'm Whitney the Weatherbot.

Big Dune Beach is the site

of the annual kite-flying contest.

Today's theme -- Heroes of Cyberspace.

The contestants are getting ready for the big event

that begins in just -- Ohh! Two hours.

And I'm here to tell you that the weather

couldn't be more perfect for flying a kite.

[ Laughs ]

A gusty, but not too gusty,

on the Whitney Windy Weather Scale.

And, yes, even the Cybersquad is here --

flying a kite in the shape of Motherboard,

the real hero of Cyberspace.

-Whoa! Whoa!

-Huh?! Y-i-i-i-ikes!

-[ Gasps ] Uh-oh.

-Looks like Digit is having a little problem.

-[ Grunting ]

Ooooh!

[ Muffled screams ]

-Ha ha! Gotcha!

-Great catch, Didge!

-Just in time, too.

I'm pretty sure we're not supposed to go on the sand dune.

-Ah. Yes. Right you are, Jackie.

Why? Because sand dunes like this one

not only protect the beach from high tide and heavy winds.

They provide food and shelter to birds and insects.

-I can see why they call it Big Dune.

-Well, when the wind blows the sand around,

it builds up the dune,

and the plants help hold the sand in place.

But let me show you something.

[ Beep ]

Here's Big Dune just yesterday.

Here's Big Dune a year ago.

And here's Big Dune three years ago.

-Wow. Big Dune sure was bigger three years ago.

-Yeah, a lot bigger.

-The bigger the dune, the more protection

it provides for everything around it.

-So...how come it got smaller?

-Well, storms, strong winds, rain, high tides

all take some of the sand away.

Especially the reallybig storm we had last month. Mm-hmm!

-So running on a dune

must make the sand disappear even faster!

-It does indeed. We all need to just stay off them.

-No problem!

-Well, good luck with the contest.

[ Thud ]

-Oh, I'm thinking maybe I should just forget

about flying my kite.

-No way. -It's still early, Dide.

There's plenty of time to practice.

-I'm good at flying. Just not so good at flying a kite.

-[ Laughs ] Come on, Didge. Give it a chance.

-I did, once, a long time ago.

When I was younger.

It didn't go very well then, either.

♪♪

[ Cheers and applause ]

Everyone got a trophy or medal except me.

[ Sighs ]

-That was then, Didge. This is now.

-I know. I was really hoping I could forget about last time.

But I'm not sure I can.

-Today is your day, Didge. You'll see.

-My dad used to take me to the park every Saturday,

and sometimes we'd fly kites.

Maybe I can help you.

Okay.

First, you need to stand with your back to the wind.

The wind is blowing those flags that way,

so we'll face this way.

Hold the kite up high.

Then start running!

Let the wind catch the kite.

Let the string out slowly.

Give a few tugs on the string to steady it.

And let the wind do the rest!

-If the wind changes direction, move with it!

If the wind blows stronger,

let more string out and pull harder.

Looking good, Didge! -Awesome!

-Uh-oh! -[ Zip! ]

-Shorten the string, Didge!

-[ Gasps ] Watch out for the dune!

Just when I was starting to get it!

-It's not you, Didge.

It might be the kite's tail. Ours is too short.

-It says here the tail should be

at least twice the length of your kite.

-Why? -A longer tail

keeps the kite from rolling over in the air.

-Matt, hold this at the other end.

That's one.

Jackie, hold this end down here.

[ Laughs ] Perfect!

Now we double this back up to Matt.

-And that makes two.

-This tail is now twice the length of the kite.

Snip it, Jax!

-Careful!

-Perfect! One double-length tail!

All we have to do now is attach it.

-The -- What's that?!

[ Engine rumbling ]

What's Hacker doing here?

[ Rock music playing ]

-Aah! This can't be good!

This can't be good at all!

[ Air horn blares ]

-This just in -- one very large kite

and an even larger ego

have just arrived for the contest.

[ Tires screech ]

-Cut the music! -[ Music shuts off ]

[ Birds squawking ]

-[ Click ] -[ Cheers and applause]

-The Hacker is not going to win this contest!

[ Wind rushes ]

When the kite dips...

give the string a yank...

run and flip it like this

so it swoops back up in the air!

an amazing array of kites will fly high on Big Dune Beach.

What's the problem? It's just a pile of sand.

-Dunes are more than just a pile of sand.

-Yes. Jackie's right.

A sand dune is super-important.

It helps protect the marshes from the ocean winds

and high tides.

It helps protect the beach...

as well as the houses behind the dunes.

-Fine. I'll get off this silly sand.

Besides, I have a contest to win.

[ Engine starts ]

[ Tires screech ]

-Wait for us, boss!

-We're coming!

-Oh, great! Thanks to Hacker,

the Big Dune has even less sand now.

-Is there anything we can do to save what's left?

-Oh. There is.

A fence at the front of the dune

would protect it and help the dune rebuild itself.

-Will it take long for the dune to be big again?

-Well, it's a slow process, Digit,

but the fence will definitely help.

And, in time, the dune will be high and wide again.

-We can build a fence, right?

-We've built a lot of fences.

-I'll work on a plan.

with these zip ties to hold in most of the sand.

I can make it to the kite-flying contest in time!

Uh-oh. The wind has picked up. It's now a very windy .

The wind is taking its toll.

are at a place that some people may not know

is a part of New York City -- Rockaway Beach.

-Someday I want to learn to surf.

Our family used to go here to swim when we were younger.

-Yeah. When you were little,

I had to stop you from running up the sand dunes.

-Why did you want to spoil my fun?

-You can't mess with sand dunes.

-Why is that it problem to play on a sand dune?

-Well, dunes keep the sand on the beach from

washing away into the ocean, and they act like cushions.

-What do you mean? -They take some

of the power out of waves

and slow down the movement of ocean water.

-What's happening there?

-[ Indistinct conversations ] -Let's find out.

-Alright, everybody.

So, now that we're ready to plant,

we're gonna take the plant and we're gonna make sure

that we massage the root ball to really break up the dirt.

These roots are really long,

and when they grow all together, they hold the dirt in place --

or the sand like where we're planting here.

You'll take your plant, and you're gonna find

the center of your circle,

and that's where you're gonna place it.

-Hi. -Hi.

-What's going on? -They're planting

Virginia creeper, bayberry, and beach plum.

-They're planting...in the sand?

-It surprises some people that some plants can grow

in sand instead of soil.

These plants are special.

They have long root systems to help them find moisture.

-But whyare they planting on the beach?

-The plant's long roots help keep the sand in place

and protect the dunes.

Helping to rebuild and protect the dunes

is really important because the dunes protect us.

-What do you mean?

-Well, when there was a big hurricane here,

the water from powerful waves washed up over the boardwalk

and flooded streets and houses.

But the dunes helped keep some of the nearby houses

from getting flooded.

Those workers out there are making dunes

by building a seawall. they'll cover with sand.

-Wow!

-The rebuilt dunes break the force of the waves,

but without any plants to keep the sand in place,

all of the sand will wash out back into the sea.

These students are doing their part to help prevent that.

-That's awesome! -How old are these kids?

-The youngest is .

-Well, if they can help, so can we.

-Sure.

-Yeah, sure. You're gonna massage this thing nicely.
