Water is supposed to put out fire,
not catch on fire.
Hm, but there's something in this ice that helps it burn.
I don't see firewood or anything.
You can't see it, although sometimes you sure can smell it.
[laughs]
Oh, I know what it is!
Grandpa Nat told me about it this summer.
Tooey, Trini, and I were canoeing,
and there were all these stinky bubbles in the lake.
Shchada'a said the permafrost at the bottom of the lake
was thawing, and as it thawed,
all this gas that had been trapped
at the bottom of the lake rose to the surface.
And that's what made the stinky bubbles.
While you were explaining it, I could see it in my mind!
But how does that make ice catch on fire?
Uh...
Oh!
See these white patches? They sort of look like bubbles.
So maybe the bubbles are still coming up!
But instead of going into the air and stinking things up,
they get trapped in the ice!
Yup. [chuckles]
And that trapped gas is what's catching on fire.
MOLLY: So pretty.
It just needs a little more color.
A little food coloring with some water, and...
Ta-da!

So pretty. [giggles]
[sighs]
Time to get Trini.
This way-- come on.
I don't know what you're up to, but it's not gonna work.

He's a champion ice carver.
GIRL: First I thought of a design,
and then we drew it on the ice.
I'm making a star.
GIRL: Our teacher showed us how to use the tools.
Okay, good job.
BOY: There were some curved chisels,
so that you could make, um, smooth curved lines,
and then there was also a flat chisel,
so that you could just take big chunks out.
GIRL: It took a lot of work,
but it was all worth it.
BOY: I made a lynx,
because it's my favorite animal, and they just look cool.
I think it's very fun, like,
making shapes and cool stuff in ice.

fur, and hair tufts-- everything!

Moose tracks are similar to deer tracks, but bigger.
They're about four to five inches wide.
And try not to mix them up with caribou tracks.
Caribou aren't here this time of year.
