Yeah!

ZADIE: "The Treeborhood Carnaval."

Whoa.

Look at all these colorful costumes.

I'm teaching a Bomba dance class later,

and I thought I could wear one.

You gotta shake your body like this, Sammy.

Feel the Bomba beats.

Let them move you.

[singing]

Eh!Whoa.

Great mask, Dad.

It's a [span tts:fontStyle="italic">vejigante[/span>mask.

A traditional Puerto Rican mask

that you wear at the Carnaval of Thanks.

Look at this.

That's [span tts:fontStyle="italic">Abuelo[/span>and you when you were little.

Is this the Carnaval of Thanks?

Yeah!

It's an amazing occasion

where everyone wears costumes and masks

and dances to Bomba

to celebrate what they're thankful for together.

I made this [span tts:fontStyle="italic">vejigante[/span>mask for my dad.

It has painted pictures of all the things

I was thankful for.

Can I see the pictures?

Huh? Huh? Please?

Aww.

The pictures are all kind of faded.

You're right.

It could use a little touch-up with some fresh paint.

Ha ha!

[span tts:fontStyle="italic">Ay![/span>

[crashes]

Dad!

Are you okay?I'm fine.

[groans]: But the mask is not.

It's broken and covered in paint.

[groans]

I made this mask for my dad.

It was really special to me.

[sighs]

I've got to get ready for my class.

And Malik wows the crowd

with his famous yo-yo tricks.

All right!

Oh, sorry, Sammy.

[chuckles]: I didn't know you were there.

[sighs]: That's okay.

You look sad.

What's wrong?

This mask belonged to my grandfather.

But my dad dropped it

and it broke and stuff.

My dad is really sad,

and that makes me sad, too.

I know how your dad feels.

Last week, I broke my favorite yo-yo.

And I was really sad.

Luckily, Super made me a new one.

And I like this new one even better.

That's it.

I'll make my dad a new mask.

That'll for sure make him feel lots better.

And I'll throw a big surprise Carnaval of Thanks.

Huh, not sure all that was my idea,

but you're welcome.

My dad's going to love, love, love it!

[leaves rustle]

Oh, wow.

You okay?

Yup, just got excited.

Throwing a Carnavalmight be

too big of a jobfor us.

Uh, thinking, thinking...

[gasps]

[yells]:Super!

What's up?

Sammy needs to throw

a great big surprise celebration and...

Say no more.

I'll assemble the committee.

The committee?

Attention, attention.

Operation Banana.

Operation Banana?

Just watch.

Operation Banana.

Hit the ground.[both exclaim]

Operation Banana!

Operation Banana!

Operation Banana!

Sammy, meet the Surprise Party Planning Committee.

"If you have a party to plan,

we'll be there to lend a hand."

[softly]: We use the code word "banana"

instead of "party"

to keep the party a surprise.

Cool.

I want to throw a Carnaval of Thanks for my dad.

I just love those celebrations.

So colorful.

Don't worry, Sammy.

We'll handle everything.

And I'll take care of creating a new mask.

Amado, you get the piñata.

Kat, Kit, you get the streamers and lights.

And I'll cut the confetti.

We'll use the walkie-talkies

to stay in touch.

BOTH: Hi! Oh!

My dad wrecked his mask and he's sad.

Sammy's throwing a surprise Carnaval of Thanks for him.

But first, we need to make him

a new [span tts:fontStyle="italic">vejigante[/span>mask.

[whispers]: It's a surprise.

So, shh.

[whispers]: Ah, gotcha.

[door opens]

[gasps, whispers]:Duck!

Hello, Quique.

How are you?

Hi, Leiko.

I'm kind of sad over something that happened earlier.

Oh, yes, I heard.

Huh?[both gasp]

Not that anyone told me anything.

I just heard that

we all get sad sometimes.

[laughs nervously]

[clears throat]: What can I help you with?

Seeing me sad made Sammy sad.

[whispers]: So I want to make a surprise dinner

to cheer him up.

I'd like to check out the cookbook

with our favorite mofongo recipe in it.

But it's a surprise.

So, shh.

[whispers]: Oh, gotcha.

Hmm...

[aloud]: Oh, here it is.

Let me check it out for you.

Thanks-- oh, by the way,

I'm teaching a Bomba class in a few minutes.

Are you going to join us?

MALIK: Ow.

LEIKO: Ow, ow!

Ow, oh, I am too busy to come to your class,

and that pains me.

[laughs nervously]: Maybe another time.

I have a project I need to help two kids with.

Here's your book.

Bye.

[door opens, closes]

[exhales]: That was close.

Now, to create your mask.

These beautiful [span tts:fontStyle="italic">vejigante[/span>masks are made with papier-mâché.

Oh, like the Halloween mask I made.

That's right-o.

Let me know if you need help.

I'll be right there, reshelving books.

Okay, to create the mask,

the first thing we need to do

is blow up a balloon the size of your dad's head.

Let's test out this blue balloon.

I don't think my dad's head is that big.

Let's try again, with a different balloon.

Huh, that looks like Quique's body,

not his head.

[groans]

Operation Banana:

I've cut the confetti

and am delivering it to the Starlight Room.

Over. [radio static crackles]

QUIQUE: Whew!

Great Bomba class, everyone.

[both yell]

Oh, no!

Super, are you sad that you missed the class?

Don't be.

I'll teach you a private one,

just for you.

Come on.

[softly]: Operation Banana: alert.

I'm taking a Bomba class.

Over. [radio static crackles]

How are we supposed to create a mask

when we don't know how big my dad's head is?

[sighs]: Too bad we don't have your dad here

to see how big his head is.

Wait a second,

we do have your dad here.

We can use the portrait as our model.

Let's test it out.

Hmm.

I'm pretty sure my dad's head

is bigger than mine.

Say bye-bye to Mr. Tiny Balloon Head.

How are we ever supposed to create a mask

if we can't figure out the size of your dad's head?

If only we had something

that was the size of my dad's head.

[both gasp]We do.

We have the broken mask.

Yes!

The mask is the size of my dad's head!

So all we have to do

is blow up a balloon that fits the mask.

Let's test it out.

Blow.

Blow.

Blow.

Stop.

It's a perfect fit.

We worked it out.

Now comes the fun part.

We create the mask by putting papier-mâché on the balloon,

just like I did with my Halloween mask.

I'll show you how.

First, dip the paper in the paste,

then slap it on the balloon.

MALIK:Leiko?

We need your help drying the papier-mâché.

[device beeps]

[exhales]: Let's put it under

the Handy-Dandy Drying Machine.

[machine beeps]

Whee![giggles]

Great Bomba dancing,Super.[panting]

Wait! Where are you going?

To the Sow'n'Grow Garden to get [span tts:fontStyle="italic">plátanos.[/span>

I'm surprising Sammy with mofongo for dinner.

See ya.

Operation Banana.

Come in, Kat and Kit.

Operation Banana, come in, Kat and Kit.

KAT: Yes?Quique is on the move,

heading to the Sow'n'Grow Garden.

I repeat, Quique is on the move,

heading to the Sow'n'Grow Garden.

[span tts:fontStyle="italic">Hola![/span> [both yelp]

Wait, do you have plantains?

[span tts:fontStyle="italic">Plátanos?[/span>

Thanks.

Now I'm off to the Everything Emporium.

I need a [span tts:fontStyle="italic">pilón[/span> to mash the plantains in.

Attention, Operation Banana.

Come in, Amado.Yes? Over.

Quique is on the move.

I repeat, Quique is on the move,

heading to the Everything Emporium.

[exclaims]

I need to check out quickly,Mr. E.

I can't let Quique see all of these things

for the Carnaval of Thanks.[scanner beeps]

You're invited, too,

but remember, it's a surprise.

My lips are sealed.

Uh...

Hi, Quique-- bye, Quique.

[door opens, closes]Folks are acting so strange today.

The mask is looking great.

It's the right size,

we've added the horns,

and it's all painted.

What are the pictures on the mask?

SAMMY: I painted a picture of my baseball hat

because my dad gave itto me.

And this is mofongo,

and it's my favorite food.

[chuckles]:Nice.

I'll bring the mask to the Starlight Room

and help finish setting it up.

And I'll go get my dad.

I've got a surprise for you!I've got a surprise for you!

You made mofongo!

My favorite.

That's your surprise.

Can we eat it at the Starlight Room?

Yeah!

Your surprise is there.

[Bomba music playing]

[gasps]

It's a Carnaval of Thanks.

You did all of this for me?

Uh-huh, to cheer you up.

[chuckles]: [span tts:fontStyle="italic">Mijo.[/span>

Thank you.

[music continues]

And for you,

I created a new mask.

Just like you did for [span tts:fontStyle="italic"> Abuelo.[/span>

Oh, [span tts:fontStyle="italic">mijo.[/span>

I'm thankful you're my dad.

[chuckles]

And I'm thankful you're my son.

Now what are we waiting for?

Let's dance some Bomba![chuckles]
