Earth is what we call it.

And that's where we are now.

Martin: It's us, the Kratt Brothers!

Chris: My name is Chris.

Martin: And my name is Martin.

We all have names to identify

who and what we are.

Chris: If we didn't, Martin would be Blue Boy.

Martin: And Chris would be Green Guy.

Chris: And even those are nicknames.

So we have our names and so do creatures.

Martin: Puffins.

Chris: Fossa.

Martin: Soldier fish.

Chris: Pygmy marmoset.

Martin: Hercules beetles.

Chris: Macaroni penguin.

Martin/Chris: The red panda!

Martin: And hanging upside down,

this is a two-toed sloth.

Chris: A lot of the animal names describe the animal.

Martin: Right, two toes.

See on the front, two toes.

One, two.

Chris: Now what about the word "sloth"?

Well originally, the word "sloth" means,

lazy or slow

and this animal is very slow.

Martin: [chuckles] So that's the common name.

Two-toed slow-moving creature

or two-toed sloth.

Chris: And of course, every animal has a scientific name

based on the Latin language.

For her, Choloepus didactylus.

Martin: Choloepus means clumsy foot,

because sloths aren't really good at walking on the ground.

Chris: A two-toed sloth is specialized

for climbing in the trees.

Martin: And to hold these upside-down climbing poses,

this sloth has to have really strong abdominal muscles.

Hey, so let's nickname her "Abs".

Chris: Imagine if we could give a new species

its common and scientific names.

Martin: Imagine if we had creature naming powers.

Martin/Chris: What if?

We have some serious logistical hurdles here.

we must overcome them.

Martin is really upset about this, we have to help him.

Koki: But if we go to each one,

it's going to take a long time.

Chris: Hey! I just thought of something.

So, I have to show you my secrets of naming baby animals.

and I'll teach you my secret animal naming technique.

Martin: Ok, our goal is to think of a name

that captures something special about the animal.

So first - observe.

Notice something about the animal.

Aviva: She has a shell.

Koki: Orange pattern.

Jimmy Z: Red eyes.

Chris: She retracts her head and neck back into the shell.

Martin: Those are good...really good.

So, take your observations and name a hatchling.

Koki: Looks like someone splashed your shell with...

orange juice.

That's your name.

Orange Juice!

Jimmy Z: Your eyes are focused like laser beams.

I'll call you...

Uuuuh...

Hmmm...

Aviva: I'll name you...

Chris: That was a quick snap,

so how about Snappy?

Martin: Nice, and sometimes the name

can be just a little odd and random.

So, what's the best way to find a fossa?

there's the cub!

He's practicing to catch lemurs,

because fossas are the top lemur predator in Madagascar.

The way he bounces through the trees, makes naming easy.

Tenrecs have the most babies of any mammal.

I found a baby animal, but he's already got a name..

Martin/Chris/Aviva: Nubs!!!

Koki: And maybe Nubs can help me find those baby animals

with no names.

I remember that rhinos don't have the best eyesight,

but have great hearing.

And Nubs hears something.

That's why I love foxes.

And they're licking up termites.

Their favorite food.

They listen and they lick,

and that's what I'll name you...

How did I ever miss those big-eared cuties?

By body size, bat-eared foxes,

have some of the biggest ears of all mammals.

It's a great place to be if you're the climbing brother,

or a baby orangutan.

And to find them,

I've just got to get into the treetops.

But before I go up there,

I'm going to start with a wow fact.

Orangutans are the largest tree living animal in the world!

The heaviest animal that spends most of their life in the trees.

A little reptile with the perfect powers

of climbing and gliding

Chris: A lot of orangutans stay in their home territory

their whole lives.

Ranging between to square miles.

So, my geofile shows

that I'm in the mom and baby's home range.

Now I just have to find them.

to find this great ape.

That makes it easier to identify their tracks.

Also, mother ocelots leave their kittens in the den.

They know to stay there,

however, sometimes they decide to go off

and explore on their own.

back to the den where mom parked you.

And speaking of parked,

Martin/Aviva: A baby shark!

Martin: It's a catshark, a baby catshark!

Chris: Whoa! Aviva: Cute.

Aviva: Martin, don't forget to name this baby animal.

Martin: Yes, yes, ok, ok, baby catshark..

I'll name you...

Kitten!

[laughs]

Chris/Aviva/Koki: Kitten!!

Chris: Here's a wow fact.

They're called catsharks because of their cat shaped eyes.

Martin: Oh h*, yes!

Great final wow fact, bro.

Aviva: And we solved the mystery of the pods.

They're egg cases for baby sharks.

The baby sharks hatch out and the egg cases float away

and wash up on the beach!

Koki: So, what does Kitten do next?

Martin: She eats!

Anything that fits in her mouth.

Oh no! Not a baby seahorse!

Phew, oh, the baby seahorses' camouflage worked.

Kitten didn't see them.

Chris: And Kitten the catshark is off to eat and grow.

Living an independent shark lifestyle.

Aviva: And if I remember from our seahorse adventure,

father seahorses are the ones

who carry the unborn babies

in their pouch, right?

Martin: That's right.

Uh-oh, and I forgot to name all the baby seahorses too!

Koki: And there are thousands hiding in the father's pouch!

Jimmy Z: Yikes!

Martin: C'mon guys, you gotta help me name them.

Aviva: Hello there...Curly Tail.

That's what I'll name you.

Chris: And you are Giddyup.

This creature mission is going to take a while to complete.

Koki: [sighs] Can we name them numbers?

Martin: Nope. They've all got to have proper names.

Koki: Ok, then your name is...

uhm...Goldy.

Martin: Good one, Koki.

Jimmy Z: [laughs].

T-t-tickler.

Martin: [laughs] Thanks for helping me, g*ng.

You are great friends.

You know, I'll feel so much better

after these baby sea horses all have their names.

Chris: Living free and in the wild.

Martin: Naming animals is so much fun.

Chris: And animal names are so cool.

Martin: Yes like, the hedgehog.

This little animal is called a hedgehog because

they like to live in hedges

and nose around in the dirt

like little hogs or pigs.

Chris: But early on, they were called urchins

and that ocean animal called the "sea urchin"

is actually named after them

because of the spines.

Martin: Yeah and she looks like a ball of spines, right?

That's great for protection,

but can you see her face in there?

Yeah, when she feels safe,

she unrolls and gets busy.

There you go.

That's the hedgehog,

also known as the urchin.

On our adventures in the creature world,

we've met all sorts of animals with amazing names.

Chris: Like how about the pink river dolphin.

Oh yeah!

Martin: And the praying mantis.

Named after how they hold their front legs in a praying pose.

Chris: Birds have good names,

like the ruby-throated hummingbird.

And fish too!

Like the tasselled wobbegong.

A type of carpet shark.

Oh, and there's all those great monkey names.

Like spider monkey.

Who looks a lot like a giant furry spider

hanging in the tree.

Golden snub-nosed monkey.

Named for their flat noses and golden fur.

And the bonnet macaque with a little patch of hair

on their heads that looks like a hat or a bonnet.

Martin: And then you got the bears.

Chris: Bear is a very old name, meaning the brown one.

And the cobras.

Spectacled cobras.

Named for those markings that look like

a pair of glasses or spectacles.

King cobras, the largest cobra.

Scientific name, Ophiophagus hannah,

which means the snake eater.

And spitting cobras...

Martin: [chuckles] That's an easy one.

Chris: [laughs]

Martin: Names describe them.

Screech owl...

blue iguana...

Chris: Roadrunner.

Who knew that animal names could be so much fun.

Martin: Well, I did. I love naming animals.
