Martin: On the continent of Africa,

in the equatorial forests and savannas,

lives one of planet Earth's

incredible great apes.

And we're here in North America!

Chris: It's us, the Kratt Brothers.

I'm Chris. Martin: I'm Martin.

We've had so many amazing adventures

with our fellow great apes, the chimpanzees.

Chris: And ever since our very first experiences with them,

a few things really stand out about these creatures.

Martin: First of all, chimpanzees can really move

through the forest.

Remember our adventure in Uganda?

Chris: Oh yeah! Wild chimps in action.

Chris: They're going. I think we missed that gathering.

It's really tough when they go through this dense stuff.

Martin: Going up now.

Chris: He's fast! Arm over arm.

There's no way...you can keep up with these chimps!

Martin: Whoa!

Whoa!...Whoa!

Here comes another one.

[chuckles]

They are absolutely amazing in the trees.

For that weight and that size.

The way that they use the sturdy branches to run on.

The light branches to bend.

Even bending these trees all the way to the ground

and then they're mobile terrestrially.

Chris: In all our time with chimps,

another thing that's clear,

is that chimps live in complex societies

where communication is key.

[chimpanzee pan hoot]

Listen to that.

That's the classic chimpanzee pan hoot.

It's a contact call, telling all the other chimps,

'I'm here. Where are you?'

It's chimp language.

Imagine if we could move and climb like a chimpanzee.

Martin: And communicate like they do.

Imagine if we had chimpanzee powers.

Martin/Chris: What if?

Koki: Chris, it's am!

Chris: C'mon! I'm just getting warmed up for later.

Jimmy Z: Um no thanks. I'm good!

Aviva: [yawns] I know this is the climbing adventure

you always dreamed of,

but I was dreaming too.

Chris: Chimpanzees!

It's a dream come true.

They're not called one of the "great apes"

for nothing. Martin: [yawns]

Alright dude, this great ape is ready to meet

those great apes.

Grapes?

Chris: No thanks.

And of all the great apes - gorillas...

Martin: Orangutans... Chris: Bonobos...

Martin: Humans...

Chris: And Chimps...

Chimps are one of the most versatile climbers!

And I'm gonna learn...

Koki: Chris! Are you ok?

Chris: Yeah, I'm ok, but...

Ouch...oh my ankle!

Jimmy Z: You sprained it pretty bad.

Chris: No, no I'm fine. See?

Ow, oww, owwwww!

Koki: That could take weeks to heal.

Martin: Yeah, you might have to sit this out.

Chris: But...no climbing?

The chimps...

Grounded.

Aviva: You know, there'll be other climbing adventures Chris.

Martin: Think of all the other climbing creatures

that we still have to meet.

Aviva: You'll be ready to go for those!

Chris: Yeah...I guess.

Aviva: When you're better, I'll make you

any climbing creature power you want,

I promise. Chris: Thanks.

[chimp calls]

Martin: [gasps] Chimpanzees!

Aviva: Wow!

Jimmy Z: Amazing! Koki: I can't believe it!

Aviva: A whole troop.

With babies!

Koki: Wow, so cute!

Martin: But they're on the move. Passing through here.

Chris: You'd better go. Aviva: Are you sure?

Chris: Yeah, yeah...go. Go, everybody! You can't miss this.

They're too cool. Go! Hurry!

Martin: We'll be back, Chris.

Jimmy Z: Have the key lime pie in my fridge!

Chris: Yeah, the creature adventure must go on.

[chimp calls]

Martin/Jimmy Z: [climbing grunts]

Jimmy Z: Whoaaa!

Martin: [climbing grunts]

Check it out, Jimmy.

Chimps live in complex groups

called communities.

With anywhere from

to over individuals!

Jimmy Z: What are those sounds?

Are they communicating?

Martin: They're social. They have all different

relationships with each other

and they communicate a lot.

Jimmy Z: Whoa!

Aviva: You okay, Koki? Koki: I'm comin'.

But I wish I could climb like Chris.

Jimmy Z: Whoa!

Aviva: You look like a good mom.

Martin: Yeah, a chimp takes care of her baby,

for about years.

Aviva: And you're a rascally little girl!

[chimp sounds]

And pretty vocal too.

Martin: Gab, gab, gab, gab.

I'll name you Gabby!

Chris: [chuckles] Gabby. Great name, bro!

Baby chimps love to explore their environment,

but they never get too far away from mom.

Zach: Ahhh, yes. That's what I'm after.

Ok, we found the perfect creature for my plan.

Now get your laser nets ready and split up!

[ripping/zapping] No! Not literally!

I mean you go that way, and you go that way!

[zap/clang]

See? That's why I need a new assistant.

And I heard these chimpandas are supposed to be so smart!

So I need one as my lab assistant.

That's right. You are being replaced!

They have opposable thumbs

and use tools, supposedly.

Now go catch me one!

[zapping/clang]

Zach: [grumbles]

Aviva: What do they eat? Martin: They're omnivores.

Eating anything from insects to fruit,

to leaves and even meat.

Aviva: Meat?! Martin: Yeah!

Chimpanzees actually hunt monkeys.

Aviva: Wow, really?

I like when they eat fruit better.

[chimp 'danger' call]

Martin: The "wraa" call!

That means danger!

C'mon!

[chimp 'danger' call]

[zap]

[chimp panic call]

[Zachbots whirring]

[fearful chirping]

[Zachbots whirring]

Zachbots! They've got Gabby's mom!

I'll find out where they're taking her.

Aviva: Let's track the troop!

If we lose them, we might never find them again!

[distressed chirping]

Chris: Hey, Gabby. How'd you get in here?

♪♪

Aww, don't worry.

I'll watch out for you,

until we get you back to your mom

and the rest of the troop.

[distressed chirping]

♪♪

Oh, you're a good little climber, Gabby!

I wish I could climb with you.

But unfortunately, I can't right now.

[distress cries]

What's wrong?! That's a distress face.

You're in pain!

[distress cries]

Ants! You sat on an anthill!

I'll get them off.

You're all right.

I'm grooming you.

You can trust me.

For chimps, grooming is a way of showing friendship.

You know, you're a lot like a human toddler.

Not that surprising really, because humans and chimps

have about percent of the same DNA.

We're a lot alike. Even how we communicate.

We hug...stomp...and laugh!

But you chimps have a whole language of calls

and facial expressions too.

Your happy face!

I can make that too.

[happy cry] Chris: We're communicating!

Chimp style. Amazing!

You know, you're making me feel a lot better

about missing the climbing.

♪♪

Aviva: I never knew chimps built nests for the night.

Koki: They sure do. They build a new one

each night wherever they are,

because they're usually on the move.

And it looks like you're doing a pretty good job too.

Hey, Jimmy, you okay over there?

Jimmy Z: [grunting] Oww!

Woah! Oof!...Oh.

Aviva/Koki: [laughing]

Aviva: At least the troop will stay put

for the night so we don't lose them.

We still have to reunite Gabby's mom with them,

if we can rescue her from Zach.

Koki: I'm going to turn in.

Aviva: Okay, I'm staying up

to do a little chimp power suit programming.

I have a feeling we might need some chimp power

before this adventure is over.

Right, Koki?

Koki: [soft snoring]

Chris: C'mon. I want to teach you a special chimp skill.

Tool use. Few animals

can figure out how to use objects as tools.

But chimps are so intelligent,

that you do it in the wild!

Now you can get revenge on those ants, Gabby.

Not sure if your mom taught you this yet,

but chimps actually use a tool to eat ants.

The stick!

This is your tool to get the ants,

without getting bitten.

Here's what you do:

you put the stick into the anthill,

the ants attack and bite the stick,

thinking it's an intruder.

After a little bit, you take the stick out.

Voila!

An ant popsicle!

[laughs] That's right.

You knew what to do next.

Tasty, right?

You got to swallow the ants fast though,

so they don't bite your throat on the way down.

Now that's a chimp happy face.

[chuckles]

Hey, do you know about sign language?

It's a way of communicating by

making signs with your hands.

A way to communicate when someone is deaf

or hard of hearing.

Hang on!

Leah: Hello!

Chris: See? My friend, Leah, just said hello,

using sign language.

Hello!

Leah: That chimp is cute.

Chris: She just signed, you're really cute.

How do you sign...this?

Leah: Stick. Chris: Ah...ok.

This is...stick!

Stick. You try.

Yes! That's it.

You got it. Stick!

[chuckles]

Thanks Leah! Bye!

Leah: Bye!

Chris: This is great!

You know our sign language for stick,

and I know your facial language for happy.

We're communicating!

[laughs] Yeah, I'm happy too.

Aviva/Koki: [yawns]

Koki: Martin? You're back!

Martin: I've been tracking Zach all night.

I found his camp, but

we need a strategy to pull off this rescue.

Aviva: Rescue? Did someone say rescue?

Martin: No way! A chimp disc?!

Koki: Amazing! Chimpanzee Power!

Martin: This could be the answer.

Insert Chimpanzee Power Disc.

Touch Chimpanzee.

♪♪

And activate Chimpanzee Power!

♪♪♪

Chimpanzee Power!

Wow!

I feel so strong and athletic.

[climbing grunts]

I can climb so well now!

I feel kinda like...Chris!

Now I know why Chris - woohoo-

likes climbing so much!

Aviva: Okay Martin, enough climbing.

You got to use those powers to rescue that mother chimp.

Koki: We'll stay with the troop until you get her back.

Martin: Right! I'll be back soon.

Oh it's great,

to be a great ape!

Zach: Yes, very good!

With my mind control helmet attached,

she does whatever I want.

And see, the chimp doesn't make any mistakes.

Her intelligence is superior.

To you, not me.

I'm still the smartest!

Martin: Okay, a chimp is one and a half times stronger

than an adult human.

So I'll use my chimp strength in this rescue.

Okay, Zach. That chimp

is not going to be your assistant anymore!

Zach: Nice outfit, but it's no match

for my Zachbots. Get him!

♪ [dramatic music]

♪♪

[smash]

[crash]

Martin: You're forgetting about chimp strength, Zach.

Chimps have more fast-twitch muscles than a human,

and that muscle is the kind best for strength.

[smash]

[lifting/jumping grunt]

Humans have more slow-twitch muscles,

which are best for endurance.

[loud crash]

Zach: Woah! Ahh!!!

Martin: That's chimp strength for ya!

Zach: Argh! Hmm...

Martin: [chimp sounds]

Hm?! Uh-oh!

Zach: Get him!

Martin: Oh! Uh! Aaah!

[struggle]

Zach: Oh where are those fast-twitch muscles now?

Martin: Zach, let me go.

And the chimpanzee too. She's a mom!

She needs to get back to her baby now.

Chris can't look after little Gabby forever.

Zach: A baby chimp... interesting!

Well, I could use a little more assistance around here.

Martin: Zach, don't even think about it...

Zach: Too late. I already did!

Zachbots!

Let's got get that chimp!

[evil laughter]

Chris: [chuckle] You don't think I can't catch you?

Oh, you rascal! Here I come!

♪♪

Hey!

Hey no fair! That's my remote.

Ok, so scientists have shown

that chimps have some capacity

to learn human sign language,

but I know some chimp-style gestures that you use.

Come here.

C'mon, I know you understand.

It's how chimps say 'come here'

with their hand out like this.

Thank you.

Well, there's that happy face again.

Oh, I'll give you something to laugh about!

[chuckles]

[chimp calling]

Jimmy Z: That call must mean "let's stop for a snack".

You don't have to tell me twice.

Ah! Aaah!

I can't quite reach.

[grunting]

Koki: It's cool that one of these chimps found

this fruiting tree and called everyone else over.

Aviva: I know, I never knew that chimps had so many calls

and gestures for communicating.

Koki: They have over different calls, gestures,

and facial expressions that scientists know.

They even have ways of referring to each individual

with different sounds.

Aviva: Hey Jimmy, if you want her to share,

try putting out your hand like this.

Jimmy Z: Thanks!

That's the human way of saying, I appreciate you.

Mm hm hm!

Dee-licious!

[communicator beeping]

Martin: Shhh. Don't say anything.

But I've been captured by Zach.

We're on our way to the Tortuga and...

[call interrupted]

Aviva: Uh-oh. This is not good.

Little Gabby is there with Chris.

And Chris is still injured.

Koki: We have to figure out how to help them...fast!

Zach: And...ape assistant stop!

Now, I'm going to leave my assistant here outside,

while I go in to collect the little one.

You...follow me!

Oh, hello!

I'm here for that!

[distress call]

Chris: No way, Zach!

She's gonna be picked up by her troop,

and her mom, not you.

Zach: Yeah? What are you gonna do about it?

Hand her over!

Chris: No!...Gabby run!

Zach: Get back here!

Oh! [shrieks]

Hey, that's mine!

[bots CRASH]

♪♪

Give me that back!

I said, give me that!

Don't make me come up there!

Chris: Well, that's no way to talk to a chimp.

But I know chimp language.

The chimp gesture for "Come here".

Come here.

Zach: I said, give me that!

Ah...oh! Ugh!

Chris: [chuckles] Thanks!

You understood!

Zach: No!

Chris: Sorry Zach, we're great apes who know how to

communicate with each other.

And Gabby's mom will not be your assistant anymore!

[click]

Martin: Yes! You're free!

[grunting]

Touch chimpanzee and reactivate.

[zap] [kaboom!]

Woo!! To the Gabby rescue!

Hey, Zach...

Zach: Huh? Get them!

♪ [tense music]

Martin: [jumping grunts]

[SMASH]

That's chimpanzee power!

[banging] Strength!

Agility!

Chris: And Intelligence!

[beeping]

♪♪

[amused cries]

[chuckles] Well, that's a new twist on the ape assistant.

♪♪

Martin: [laughs] You really know how to make an exit Zach.

Zach: You can have your chimps!

They're not good assistants anyway.

[whines]

Chris: [laughs] Can you make sure

Zach gets home safely, Aviva?

Aviva: I'd be glad to!

[beep] There.

He'll dance right back to camp.

Martin: Aww. Gabby and her mom together again.

Chris: And you brought the troop back too!

Martin: Uh, but where's Jimmy?

Koki: He made some friends.

Jimmy Z: Here, try this one.

It's really ripe.

Martin: [jumping grunt]

Ha!

Well, that's Creature Mission Accomplished!

We climbed with one of the greatest climbers in the world,

the great chimpanzees.

I'll never climb that well again.

Chris: I'm glad you got to do it, bro.

Aviva: Sorry you didn't get to climb this time, Chris.

Chris: It's okay. Gabby helped me

make the best out of a bad situation.

I got to see another side of chimps

that I wouldn't have seen if I was climbing around.

And that was pretty special.

Martin: Even though we're a lot alike,

chimpanzees have their own language

and way of life.

Aviva: And now the troop is together again,

and back where they belong -

in their forest home.

Chris: Living free, and in the wild.

Martin: Hey wait for me!

Koki: Martin, the adventure is over!

Martin: Hey, I'm gonna keep living

the chimp life for a while.

Aviva: I always knew he'd go ape one of these days.

[laughs]

All: [laughter]

Martin: So, chimpanzees are incredibly athletic.

Chris: And social, with many ways

of communicating with one another.

Martin: A few more things have always struck us

about chimpanzees...

Martin/Chris: Intelligence!

Chris: And I remember one of the first times

we witnessed this so clearly.

Martin: Oh, yeah!

Chris: Hey, buddy!

Chris: It was at a chimpanzee rescue center in Africa.

Places like this, allow orphan chimps

to grow up in a safe environment.

Here, we had the chance to spend some time

helping young chimps learn important chimp skills,

like using tools.

When I taught them how to use a rock to get a sweet treat,

you could see the intelligence at work.

Chris: You try.

You're getting it. Perfect!

Excellent job!

[tapping rock]

This is an important part of the culture.

In some chimpanzee communities,

learning how to crack open these palm nuts

and get to the juicy flesh inside.

This takes smarts,

this takes the ability

to imitate and to learn.

[tapping]

Martin: No doubt, chimps are very smart creatures.

But that's not all.

Chris: When you spend time with them,

it's clear that each chimp has a unique,

one of a kind personality.

Martin: Just like us!

Chris: Bloop, bloop, bloop...

let's go, let's go!

Martin: What are you doing?

What are you doing?

Martin: We noticed some chimps were gentle,

and some were pretty rambunctious.

Martin: Don't take the microphone cover!

The microphone cover. Ohhhh....

Chris: Who took it? Who took my mic?

Whoa...these chimps all have their own personality.

Some like to fling right into your face

or they're mischievous and like to take your microphone foam.

Others just like to hang out with a friend.

Nice calm and peaceful.

Martin: Is Chris giving you a good piggyback ride?

Huh? Is he? Yeah.

Chris: [chuckles] Let's go explore!

We hope we can all keep getting to know and learn more,

about our fellow great ape.

Martin: The chimpanzees!
