ELINOR: Hi, Sally! Ready to walk to school?

SALLY: Hi Elinor. I'm not going to school today.

[sniffs] I've got the sniffles.

Ah-choo!

Mom says I have to stay home from school today so no one catches my germs.

ELINOR: Aww. Too bad you're feeling sniffly!

SALLY: Oh no! We're supposed to write our song for Be Healthy Day tomorrow!

ELINOR: Don't worry about that. You rest so you can get better.

SALLY: Thanks, Elinor. See you soon.

OLIVE: Elinor! Over here!

We're working on our Be Healthy Day projects.

I'm going to read from my Healthy Bodies book.

ARI: Tah-dah!

It's me! I made it to show everyone the right way to brush our teeth.

I even made a toothbrush!

[singing] Brush up and down, and in between... Brush-a-brush-a!

ELINOR: [chuckling] That's great, Ari! Everyone's teeth will be VERY sparkly.

ARI: Yeah, sparkly... [gasp]

That's what my poster needs. I'll add glitter to make the teeth sparkly!

Aha!

Whoooaaa! Oops!

Heh. Spilled some.

Ooh, I need glue, too.

Mm-mm.

Uh-uh.

Aha! Here it is.

OLIVE: [laughs] Ari's pretty into Be Healthy Day.

ELINOR: It's so fun to think of all the ways we can be HEALTHY!

OLIVE: Did you and Sally write your song on the way to school?

ELINOR: No, and she didn't come to school today.

OLIVE: Why not?

ELINOR: She's got the sniffles.

OLIVE: Aww, that's too bad.

ELINOR: She's staying home so she doesn't spread her germs around school

and make us sick, too.

ARI: That makes sense. I think...

What are ‘germs' anyway?

OLIVE: Oh, I read this in my book.

Here it is. ‘Germs' are what we call viruses and bacteria.

They're tiny things that can get into our bodies and make us sick.

ARI: Those can get in our bodies?

OLIVE: Yup! That's because they're really tiny.

They're so small, we can only see them with a microscope.

ELINOR: That's SO interesting!

But if Sally has those inside her body, how could she give them to us?

OLIVE: Germs can spread through the air when we cough or sneeze.

That's why you should always cover your and mouth when you do it.

They also spread when someone touches their nose or mouth,

and then touches another object.

That's why should sneeze into our elbows, not our hands.

ARI: Oops. My paw has glitter on it.

OLIVE: [laughs] So does your nose.

ARI: Huh...

ELINOR: [gasp] And so do my paws.

TITO: Hey, who put glitter on everything?

ARI: Oops. I'd better wipe that up...

ELINOR: It's on everything Ari touched! The shelves, and bins, and the glue...

...and I touched the glue, so now I'm glittery!

Maybe that's how someone with the sniffles can spread their germs.

OLIVE: Yeah. If viruses and bacteria get on their paws, they can get on anything they touch.

ARI: I should wash this glitter off.

MZ. MOLE: What's going on, kids?

OLIVE: We just found out that germs are viruses and bacteria that can make us sick!

ARI: And they can spread from our paws. Like glitter!

MZ. MOLE: That's true. Viruses and bacteria do spread easily.

That's why it's important to wash our paws.

ELINOR: Maybe we should ALL wash our paws.

OLIVE: Yeah! ARI: Yeah, we should go wash our hands.

How come the glitter isn't washing off?

Oh, wait - I forgot soap...

OLIVE: Wow! No more glitter!

MZ. MOLE: And no more germs. Washing our paws with soap is a great way to stay healthy.

ELINOR: We should make sure everyone knows to wash their hands so they don't get sick.

[gasp!] Mz. Mole, can I help you remind everyone?

MZ. MOLE: Sure! In fact, let's make that a proper job. Elinor, you can be our ‘Clean Captain'.

ARI: Cool!

OLIVE: Can we help?

ELINOR: Of course! We can be the Clean Team!

ARI: YAY! OLIVE: YAY!

ELINOR: Mz. Mole, could I borrow the class whistle?

We can use it to get everyone's attention.

MZ. MOLE: Ah, good thinking, Elinor. You're going to be a great, Clean Captain.

ELINOR: Let's wash our paws before we eat.

ARI: Yes, Clean Captain!

TITO: Oops.

MZ. MOLE: Back to class, everyone.

ELINOR: Remember to wash your paws on the way in!

MR. RABBIT: Hi Elinor. [chuckles] How was school?

ELINOR: Great! We're getting ready for Be Healthy Day tomorrow.

MR. RABBIT: Sounds exciting!

ELINOR: And I have a job! When it's time to wash, I do this -

[loud whistle tweet]

MR. RABBIT: Ah! Oooh, don't you think that might be a little too loud?

ELINOR: No, it's perfect for getting everyone's attention.

MR. RABBIT: Well, I'm proud of you for wanting to help, honey bunny.

And what are you working on here?

ELINOR: My Clean Captain uniform.

MR. RABBIT: Looks very official! Well, carry on. I'm gonna get dinner started.

KIDS: [laughter]

OLIVE: Hi, Elinor! Want to skip rope?

ELINOR: I can't right now. It's Be Healthy Day! And the Clean Captain is on duty.

I see Koa getting out a snack. He needs to wash his paws!

OLIVE: Elinor sure is excited to be Clean Captain.

ARI: Maybe TOO excited...

ELINOR: I didn't mean to! I just saw that you had glue on your paws, and -

TITO: [sigh] I know. I should wash them. But now I have to start all over.

ELINOR: I was just trying to help. I don't want him to catch the sniffles.

OLIVE: We know. But that whistle is SO loud.

ARI: Yeah. And you're blowing it a LOT.

OLIVE: If you do it too much, kids might stop listening to you.

ELINOR: I don't want that. Paw-washing is super important.

But maybe I did get a little carried away.

OLIVE: You just need a friendlier way to remind people to wash their hands.

ARI: Something more fun, and less whistle-y.

SALLY: Hi everyone.

ARI: Sally! Your sniffles are gone?

SALLY: Yeah, I'm feeling much better. Now we can finally write our song!

Oh no! But we haven't even decided what the song should be about.

ELINOR: I have an idea. Let's write a song about washing our paws, so we don't spread germs!

A fun song.

SALLY: Yes! I love that idea!

ELINOR: And maybe Olive and Ari can help?

OLIVE: Aye, aye, Clean Captain! The Clean Team is onnnn duty.

KIDS: [laugh]

ARI: [singing] Brush up and down and in-between.

To keep your teeth sparkling clean! Brush-a, brush-a-what!

KIDS: [applause]

MZ. MOLE: Thank you, Ari!

Well, now that we're all "brushed up" [chuckling] on healthy teeth, you see what I did there?

[chuckles] Let's all hear about... viruses and bacteria!

OLIVE: ‘Virus' and 'Bacteria' are scientific terms.

But that's a little hard to say, so that's why we call them germs.

They can get into our bodies and sometimes make us sick.

But we can keep the germs away with one simple trick!

ELINOR: [singing]♪♪♪ First you get some soap!

Pump-pump-pump!

ELINOR/SALLY: [singing]And let the water spray.

SALLY: [singing]Pshh, pshh!

ELINOR/SALLY: [singing]You gotta scrub those paws.

Scrub-scrub-scrub.

And wash the germs away!

Pshh, pshh!

And when your paws are dry.

All dry.

You're gonna get your chance.

Here's our chance!

TITO: [laughs] I want to try that!

MZ. MOLE: Me too. Let's ALL do the Clean Paw dance!

ALL: [laugh]

ELINOR: "The Moment of Tooth"

KIDS: [laughter]

ELINOR: I'm SO EXCITED for a day at the beach!

The sun, the sand, the ocean... [sigh]

OLIVE: Me too! The beach is sooo...

Sunny! More sunblock, please.

[empty squirt]

ELINOR: Hmm... Huh!

[splat]

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

ELINOR: What should we build in the sand today?

OLIVE: I don't know. Let's ask Ari when he gets here.

MR. RABBIT: Here you go, Elinor.

ELINOR: [gasp] It's my old beach chair.

I've had it since I was a little bunny.

ELINOR: He- Huh? Ugh. Urghh...

Hey! Oof! Did my chair get smaller?

MR. RABBIT: I think you grew, Elinor.

ELINOR: Eeh! Uh-uh.

OLIVE: [giggles]

ELINOR: Hgh! Ugh!

OLIVE: [giggles] Elinor. Your chair! [giggles]

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

ELINOR: Ugh.

MR. RABBIT: [chuckles] MR. RABBIT/OLIVE: [pulling efforts]

ELINOR: Dad, we're gonna need a bigger chair.

Look! It's Ari!

Ari! Over here!

OLIVE: Hi!

MR. BAT: Hello!

OLIVE: Ari? Why aren't you talking?

MR. RABBIT: Well, it makes sense.

We're by the ocean, so instead of saying hello, Ari decided to WAVE!

ALL: [laughter]

MR. BAT: Dad joke?

MR. RABBIT: Dad joke.

MIRI: [giggles]

ELINOR/OLIVE: [giggles]

Ari, what's going on?

ELINOR: Yeah. You're never this quiet.

Except maybe when you're sleeping.

OLIVE: Or eating. No, you're pretty loud then, too.

Have you lost your voice?

ARI: Mm-mm.

ELINOR: Is it your mouth?

ARI: Mhm.

OLIVE: Oh, I know! Your mouth is GONE!

KIDS: [giggling]

ARI: [giggling] How could my mouth be gone? Whoops!

OLIVE: Aww, Ari, what's going on?

ELINOR: Yeah, just tell us!

ARI: Okay. I have... drumroll please...

[drumroll]

A loose tooth!

ELINOR: Whoa!

OLIVE: So cool!

ARI: See? I can move it with my tongue.

OLIVE: That's AMAZING!

ARI: My dad says it's going to FALL OUT!

ELINOR: And then it's just... gone?

MR. BAT: Don't worry. A new tooth will grow in its place very soon.

MR. RABBIT: Why don't you kids go play while we set up a blanket for baby Miri.

ARI: Okay!

OLIVE: Yeah, we were waiting for you to build something in the sand. C'mon!

So, does your loose tooth hurt, Ari?

ARI: Nah, it just feels a little funny.

OLIVE: So you're getting a new one?

ARI: Yup, after this one falls out.

OLIVE: Will your new tooth be different?

ARI: I don't know.

I mean, I think it's just going to be a regular tooth.

KIDS: [laughter]

ELINOR: A regular tooth... but BETTER?

ARI: I don't know. I think so.

KIDS: [laughter]

Wait. What if it's worse?

This old tooth and I have been through a lot of good snacks together.

Why did it have to get loose?

ELINOR: Good question, Ari. I wonder why we lose our teeth and grow new ones anyway.

ARI: I HAVE to know the truth.

OLIVE: Do you mean the truth or the TOOTH.

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: Okay, what should we build in the sand?

ARI: Hey! You know what this sand pile looks like to me?

OLIVE: What?

ARI: A SHARK!!

OLIVE: Yeah, I see it... kind of?

ELINOR: Let's make it even more sharky!

OLIVE/ARI: Yeah!

ELINOR: Hmm... I feel like our shark is missing something.

OLIVE: [gasp] I know! Teeth! Sharks have a LOT of teeth.

ARI: You can't have thith one yet, Sharky.

ELINOR: I know.

Let's use seashells!

OLIVE: Good idea!

ARI: Let's get some more.

There!

ELINOR: Wow! This is such a pretty shell.

I'll put it right here.

Huh?

Where did the shell go?

There it is.

Huh?

OLIVE: What is it, Elinor?

ELINOR: I just put a shell down right there, and now it's gone.

Wait a minute. Olive! Ari! Look!

That seashell is moving!

ARI: I didn't know seashells could move. Does it have legs?

OLIVE: I'm not sure it's just a seashell, it actually looks like--

A crab!

ARI: A crab... inside a seashell?

ELINOR: But... why?

OLIVE: Look, a seagull!

ELINOR: Oh. The crab was afraid of the seagull, so it hid in the shell.

The crab uses the hard seashell to stay safe.

[squawk]

ARI: Kind of like a turtle?

ELINOR: I think so.

OLIVE: Oh, I remember reading about this in my nature book.

This is called a hermit crab.

They're small crabs with soft bodies that use seashells made by snails to protect themselves.

ARI: Oh, that's so smart, little crab! It's like you're carrying around your house.

OLIVE: Whoa. What's it doing now?

It changed shells!

ELINOR: That is SO INTERESTING!

OLIVE: Why would it do that?

ARI: Yeah. The old shell was really nice.

Why would it want a new one?

ELINOR: We need MORE OBSERVATIONS!

OLIVE: Okay. What's different between the old shell and the new shell?

ELINOR: It's a different color. Maybe the crab wanted a new look?

ARI: And it's pointier. Maybe the crab wanted to... be... more... pointy?

OLIVE: Wait. The new shell is bigger than the old shell.

ARI: Why would it need a bigger shell?

ELINOR: Hey! Maybe the crab grew too big for its old shell,

just like I grew too big for my beach chair.

OLIVE: I think you're right, Elinor.

Hermit crabs don't make their shells, so when they grow,

they have to find a bigger one!

ARI: Huh.

MR. BAT: Kids! Who wants a snack?

ARI: [gasp] Snack?

ELINOR: Dad, look at this!

MR. RABBIT: What have you got there?

Oh, it's a hermit crab.

OLIVE: It was walking on the beach, and we saw it switch shells!

MR. BAT: Huh. That's what hermit crabs do.

ELINOR: We think it did it because it's growing and it needed a bigger shell.

MR. RABBIT: That's right, kids.

ARI: Well, I'm growing too, which means I need SNACKS!

[chomp]

[gasp] My toof! My toof! It fell out!

OLIVE: It's so tiny!

MR. BAT: Congratulations, Ari! You lost your first tooth.

ARI: My FIRST? You mean I'm gonna lose MORE?

MR. RABBIT: You sure are, but it's nothing to worry about.

MR. BAT: It happens to all of us.

ARI: And it didn't even hurt!

ELINOR: Ari! You have a tooth!

ARI: Sure. It's in my hand.

ELINOR: No, I mean I see a NEW tooth growing in where the old one was.

ARI: Really?

Dad, is my new tooth going to be bigger than the old one?

MR. BAT: Sure. In fact, that's kind of the point.

ARI: So THAT'S why we lose teeth.

We're growing, and when we get bigger, we need bigger teeth.

OLIVE: Just like the hermit crab needed a bigger shell!

ELINOR: And I needed a new beach chair.

ARI: Phew! That's a relief.

And hey, bigger teeth means we can eat MORE SNACKS!
