Look at all these fantastic floats for the spring parade!

ARI: They make me feel so float-y.

KIDS: [giggles]

OLIVE: The Spring Parade is so much fun.

MS. BEAVER: Oh, there you are, kids.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me with the decorations.

ELINOR: You're welcome, Ms. Beaver.

It's going to be an amazing parade.

MS. BEAVER: Oh, I hope so, Elinor!

Everyone has worked so hard.

Oh, I just want everything to be perfect.

ARI: Don't worry, Ms. Beaver, it'll be spring-tastic!

ALL: [giggles]

OLIVE: I love how each float shows something different about the spring season.

MS. BEAVER: Yes! Everyone has been working hard on their floats.

This one is about how flowers bloom in the spring.

ARI: Yikes!

That's a big tulip!

ELINOR: Whoa! [giggles]

That is a big tulip!

ARI: A flower that big makes me feel as small as a bug.

Look at me, I'm a bee!

Buzz, buzz!

KIDS: [giggles]

MS. BEAVER: This one is about how trees grow new green leaves in the spring.

ELINOR: I love trees, they “leaf” me feeling so good!

KIDS: [giggles]

MS. BEAVER: And this one is about how birds come back in the spring.

[birds tweeting happily]

ARI: Oh, I love when the birds come home.

Hello, fly buddies.

OLIVE: Hmm.

No clouds yet.

ELINOR: What are you doing, Olive?

OLIVE: I wanted to draw the clouds, but I don't see any right now.

It's something I like to do in my journal every day.

See, each day, I draw what the clouds look like and anything else about the day.

ARI: Like what?

OLIVE: Like if it's sunny, or windy, or rainy.

ARI: Cool!

MS. BEAVER: Okay, I think we're all set for the parade this afternoon.

Oh, I just hope nothing goes wrong.

ELINOR: What could go wrong, Ms. Beaver?

MS. BEAVER: Oh, you never know. Sometimes there are surprises.

[Stomach gurgling]

ARI: Well I'd like to surprise my tummy with some snacks right now.

ALL: [giggles]

OLIVE: Ari, you needing a snack is not a surprise.

ALL: [giggles]

MS. BEAVER: [giggles] Okay, why don't you kids go get a snack?

And I'll double-check that everything is ready.

KIDS: Bye!

ELINOR: See you later!

MR. RACCOON: [deep inhale]

ARI: Hey, Mr. Raccoon!

MR. RACCOON: Hi kids, ready for the spring parade this afternoon?

ELINOR: We sure are.

MR. RACCOON: Well, I can't wait!

I'm just polishing up my store to look nice when the parade goes by.

I even baked these special spring cookies for everyone to munch on as they watch.

Care to try one?

ARI: I thought you'd never ask!

KIDS: Thanks, Mr. Raccoon.

KIDS: [chewing]

ARI: Uh, is it raining?

MR. RACCOON: Whoa, sorry kids! [laughs]

That was my fault.

I'll get a towel.

ARI: That was so funny!

I thought it was raining!

OLIVE: Me too!

KIDS: [giggles]

ELINOR: Rain! Wait a minute!

What if it does rain this afternoon?

Everything in the parade will get wet.

OLIVE: Ooh, that would not be good.

ELINOR: The parade would be ruined!

ARI: Or what if it's too hot to walk around?

OLIVE: It's usually only really hot in the summer.

But, what if it snows?

ARI: Hmm. Most of the time, it only snows in the winter.

ELINOR: And this is not winter.

But it does rain in the spring, so it could rain today.

ARI: Uh-oh. How can we tell if it will?

MR. RACCOON: How can you tell what?

ELINOR: How can we tell what the weather is going to be this afternoon?

OLIVE: Yeah, if it rains, the parade will get all wet.

MR. RACCOON: Hmm. I'm not sure.

ELINOR: Maybe we can observe the weather?

OLIVE: Good idea, Elinor.

Observing always helps us figure things out.

ELINOR: Let's go to the park and get a better view.

Come on!

OLIVE: Thanks!

ARI: Bye!

ELINOR: Bye! See you later!

OLIVE: Well, the sky is blue, and the sun is shining.

ARI: And I don't see any rain right now.

ELINOR: Yeah, but how can we know if it's going to rain this afternoon?

ARI: Oh, I've got it.

We'll build a time machine and travel to the future.

OLIVE: Any idea how to build a time machine?

ARI: Um, now that you mention it,

I'm not sure time machines have been invented yet so...

OLIVE: Oh! I see a cloud over there!

It looks like a dark cloud.

I'd better draw it.

What else?

[wind blows]

And I feel...

Some wind!

I'd better draw that too.

ARI: You can draw the wind?

OLIVE: Yep. See!

ARI: Nice! Whoosh!

ELINOR: Wait a minute.

Olive, did you say you draw in your notebook when it rains?

OLIVE: Yep, see!

Yesterday was sunny, and there were no clouds or wind or rain.

But the day before, there were dark clouds and wind, and then it rained.

I write down what I observe every day.

ELINOR: [gasps] Maybe we can look for a pattern in your journal,

and that will help us figure out when it rains.

OLIVE: Oh, great idea, Elinor!

I'll make a chart, and that might tell us if it's going to rain today.

ARI: You mean we can see into the future without a time machine?

ELINOR: More like we can make a good guess, Ari.

ARI: Still. Cool!

OLIVE: There! Now we can see all the days at once.

ELINOR: Okay, on this day, there were dark clouds, and it was windy - it rained.

On this day, it was windy, but no dark clouds - no rain.

ARI: On this day, there were dark clouds but no wind - no rain.

OLIVE: But this day, it rained, and there was wind and dark clouds.

ELINOR: I see a pattern!

On the days when there are dark clouds and wind, it also rained.

ARI: And I see dark clouds coming closer!

OLIVE: Ooh... and the wind is blowing the clouds.

I'd better put that in the chart.

So today, there are dark clouds and wind.

ELINOR: I think that means it might rain today!

OLIVE: Oh, no!

We'd better tell Ms. Beaver!

ELINOR: Ms. Beaver, Ms. Beaver!

OLIVE: We have to tell you something!!

MS. BEAVER: Oh, what is it, kids?

ARI: Olive was drawing the clouds, and some days it rained and some days it didn't,

so we made a chart with dark clouds and wind, and then we saw dark clouds and wind and-

MS. BEAVER: Oh, okay, Ari, Ari, deep breath, deep breath.

ARI: [deep breaths]

What we're trying to say is.

ELINOR: We were worried that it might rain on the parade this afternoon.

So we looked at Olive's journal to see what happened on other days.

OLIVE: Then we made a chart of the clouds, the wind and the rain, and we noticed a pattern.

If there are dark clouds and wind, then it rains.

ARI: And today we saw dark clouds and felt the wind, which means...

KIDS: It might rain this afternoon!

MR. RACCOON: Excellent pattern finding, kids!

MS. BEAVER: [gasps ] But if it rains on our Parade, everything will be ruined.

[crying]

What can we do?

ELINOR: Maybe, we can use umbrellas?

MR. RACCOON: Yes! I have lots more inside.

MS. BEAVER: Oh I think that will work!

Oh, good thinking, kids!

It can be hard to predict the weather perfectly,

but noticing patterns in it can help us prepare.

MR. RACCOON: Mm-hmm.

It's always good to be prepared!

MR. RACCOON: Here you go!

ARI: You got to love that giant tulip.

Buzz-buzz-buzz!

MR. RACCOON: Uh oh. I think it's starting to rain.

ELINOR: No worries, Mr. Raccoon.

ARI: We noticed a pattern.

OLIVE: And we are prepared!

[whistle blows]

ELINOR: I'm so glad we could "spring" into action!

Because you know, I really do love the spring.

ARI: [giggles]

ELINOR: Oh!

ARI: Olive, you don't want an umbrella?

OLIVE: Nah,

I want to write in my journal that I danced in the rain!

KIDS: [giggles]

OLIVE: Olive hiccups it up!

[hiccup]

ARI: A-one, a-two, a-one, two, three!

[drumming on stage and cardboard set]

ELINOR: Ari! [giggles]

This is a play, not a concert.

ARI: I know. I was playing “It's a Concert”!

ELINOR: [giggles] This is Olive's play. She wrote it.

OLIVE: Mm-hmm, it's a story about brave knights.

I always wanted to do a play about them for my friends.

ARI: Oh, I love the part where Olive talks to the fire-breathing dragon.

Say the part, Olive!

OLIVE: You got it!

Okay!

h* there, dragon!

Stop that trouble-making and leave our castle, please!

It's my favourite part, too.

KIDS: [giggles]

MEDHI: Sorry I'm late!

OLIVE: That's okay, Medhi.

You got here just in time to help out.

MEDHI: Great! I told the whole town about our play,

and they're all going to come!

OLIVE: [gulps] The whole town?

But this play was supposed to be just for fun.

MEDHI: It'll be more fun when we do it for everyone.

They said they can't wait to see it.

OLIVE: [gulp] I've never done a play in front of so many before.

ELINOR: Why don't we practice the play before the big show later?

ARI: Yeah! MEDHI: Yay!

ELINOR: Come on!

OLIVE: Okay Olive.

You can do this.

ELINOR: Hmm, Olive the Knight.

I think there's trouble this way.

Hmm.

[yelling] Olive the Knight, I think there's trouble this way.

OLIVE: [gasps]

[drumming]

ELINOR: Could it be the...

[thunder sheet rumbles and roars]

Fire breathing dragon!?

I bet it's up to no good!

ARI: [roars] I'm the fire-breathing dragon!

I'm a really bad dragon and I'm up to no good!

Watch me breathe my fire!

[loud exhale]

ELINOR: [whispers] Psst, Olive, say your part!

OLIVE: [nervous stutters] h* there, wagon, I mean, dragon!

Stop that trouble-making and leave our [hiccup]

h* there, dra- [hiccup]

Uh-oh.

ARI: I think you have the hiccups, Olive.

OLIVE: The hiccups? [hiccup]

ARI: Yeah! Like how you're doing [hiccup]

ELINOR: Can you try not to hiccup?

OLIVE: I'll try.

h* there, drag- [hic]

I can't [hic] stop!

What if I start hiccuping during the play?

Everyone in town will [hic] be watching.

ELINOR: Maybe if we figure out why you hiccup, we can figure out how to stop it.

ARI: Great idea, Elinor.

OLIVE: But how are we [hic] going to find out more about [hic] hiccups?

ELINOR: I know!

We can get more information about hiccups at the library!

ARI: [monster voice] Yeah. The library will give us the answers we need. [roar]

Oops! Still in dragon mode.

OLIVE: I [hic] hope so.

ELINOR: We'll go to the library while Medhi, Sally and Koa finish decorating the castle.

OLIVE: Yeah! ARI: Yeah!

ELINOR: Olive, you haven't hiccuped for awhile.

Maybe they've stopped.

OLIVE: Maybe, but what if they come back?

ELINOR: Mr. Antelope isn't at his desk.

Where is he?

OLIVE: Ah! ELINOR: Ah!

ARI: A Book-A-Saurus!

OLIVE: [hic]

MR. ANTELOPE: Oops, [giggles] so sorry children.

Books coming through! Whoa!

Phew! I didn't mean to put a fright in you.

ARI: I wasn't scared at all.

OLIVE I [hic] was.

ELINOR: Olive, you're hiccuping again.

OLIVE: I know! [hic] See, what if it comes back during the play?

ELINOR: Mr. Antelope, do you know why we hiccup?

MR. ANTELOPE: Good question.

You'll find your answer in the health section of the library.

We have a whole book about hiccups.

ARI: Awesome! Let's go!

OLIVE: Thanks, [hic] Mr. Antelope.

KIDS: Whoa!

ARI: So many books.

ELINOR: Hmm.

This must be the book Mr. Antelope talked about.

This says that a hiccup happens when there's a little twitch in your diaphragm.

OLIVE: What's a diaphragm?

ELINOR: It's the muscle in your chest that helps you breathe.

When it makes a little twitch, your voice makes a hiccup sound.

OLIVE: [hic] Like that.

ARI: Wow. I never knew I had a muscle there.

OLIVE: But why does the muscle in my chest do that?

ELINOR: Hmm, it says no one knows for sure.

But there are some ideas about it.

Some think hiccups happen when you eat too much, drink fizzy drinks, or if you feel nervous.

OLIVE: I wasn't eating anything when I got the hiccups.

ARI: And I didn't see you drink anything fizzy, either.

ELINOR: Maybe you were nervous?

OLIVE: Mr. Antelope startling us did make me feel a little nervous.

And I got nervous when Medhi told us the whole town is coming to see our play.

ELINOR: Hmm I think we figured it out!

Olive's hiccups start when she gets nervous.

ARI: That's easy to fix. Olive, stop being nervous.

OLIVE: But how? I can't help but be nervous sometimes.

ELINOR: Hmm. Maybe we can go ask Mr. Antelope for help?

ARI: Why's Mr. A sitting like that?

ELINOR: Uh, excuse me, Mr. Antelope? What are you doing?

MR. ANTELOPE: Oh, hello again, children.

I was just meditating.

OLIVE: Meditating? What's that?

MR. ANTELOPE: [deep inhale and exhale]

It's a breathing exercise I do to help me relax.

Like earlier when I almost dropped that big stack of books.

I was nervous, but then meditating calmed me down.

ELINOR: Mr. Antelope, we figured out Olive gets the hiccups because she feels nervous.

ARI: Yeah, it's one of the reasons you can get them.

OLIVE: Mr. Antelope, since meditation helps with being nervous,

can you show us how to do it?

MR. ANTELOPE: Absolutely. Let's all meditate together.

Come and sit just like me.

Meditation is about slowing your body and paying attention to your breathing.

First, you take some deep breaths.

One breath. [deep breath]

Two breaths. [deep breath]

Three breaths. [deep breath]

OLIVE: One breath. [deep breath]

Two breaths. [deep breath]

Three breaths. [deep breath]

I'm feeling a bit better already.

MR. ANTELOPE: Good!

Another thing I like to do is say something positive about myself.

Like this.

[deep breath]

Mr. Antelope, you're a great librarian

because you love books and you're good at putting them in the right spots.

You're doing a great job.

ELINOR: Oh! ARI: Cool!

ELINOR: You should say something like that, Olive.

OLIVE: Okay, I'll try.

[deep breath]

Olive, you're going to do a great job at the play today.

The breathing and saying something nice about myself feels good.

MR. ANTELOPE: Wonderful!

ELINOR: Thanks, Mr. Antelope.

OLIVE: Bye-bye.

ARI: Whoa, it looks like the whole town is here.

ELINOR: Are you ready, Olive?

OLIVE: I think so.

[thunder sheet rumbles]

ELINOR: Hmm.

I think there's trouble this way!

[gasp] Could it be, the fire-breathing dragon is nearby?

I bet it's up to no good!

[thunder sheet rumbles and roars]

ARI: [roar]

MIRI: [giggles]

ARI: Hi there!

MIRI: [giggles]

ARI: I'm the fire-breathing dragon!

I'm a really bad dragon, and I'm up to no good!

Watch me breathe my fire! [exhales]

OLIVE: I can do this.

First, take deep breaths. [deep breath]

One. [deep breath]

Two. [deep breath]

Three.

Now say something nice about myself.

Olive, you're going to do a great job today. Mm-hmm!

h* there, dragon!

Stop that mischief and leave our castle, please!

AUDIENCE: [cheers]

ARI: Okay, okay!

But can't we just be friends instead?

OLIVE: We can be friends, just be careful with your fire breath.

ARI: You got it! The only thing I'm going to use this fire breath for

is roasting marshmallows for everyone!

[happy roar]

AUDIENCE: [cheers]

ELINOR: [giggles] You did it, Olive!

OLIVE: Thanks, Elinor!

ARI: [hiccups]

ELINOR: Olive?

OLIVE: Wasn't me!

ARI: I think I had [hic] too much of this fizzy drink! [hic]

KIDS: [giggles]

AUDIENCE: [cheering]
