01x01 - The Case of the Disappearing Donuts/The Case with No Questions/The Case of the Unique Tweak

Post by bunniefuu »

Did a word that's important to you go missing?

And now all you can feel, do, or think

is the opposite of that word?

Then call us!

-I'm Sly. -And I'm Gabby.

We're Word Detectives, and we solve...

[both] Word Mysteries!

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

-Not to mention, briskly. -And swiftly.

Yeah, we're really good with words.

[kids] Wordsville!

Any calls yet, Sly?

-[Sly] Not yet, Gabby! -[loud crash]

Are you okay?

And did you replace your wheels?

Yep, and yep.

Which means it's time for a...

cookie break!

It's gonna be sweet.

[crunches]

Oh!

This cookie is disgusting.

But Baker Graham makes the best treats.

Do you think he forgot an ingredient?

Or do you think it's...

A Word Mystery? Yes!

And look, Baker Graham's calling.

Word Detectives!

I hate to bother you, but I need your help.

My scrumptious sweets are missing!

What did they look like?

Like this.

[Sly] You made donuts that actually spell

the word "scrumptious"?

That's awesome.

The dictionary says "scrumptious"

means having a delicious taste,

and usually describes something you want to eat.

Like the scrumptious sweets and treats Baker Graham makes.

Thanks for noticing.

I was going to put the donuts in my display case,

so everyone who comes to the bakery

would know all my sweets are scrumptious.

But, they disappeared!

Is that why my cookie tastes like an old shoe?

It's not just the cookies.

When my donuts disappeared,

everything in town stopped tasting good!

What about the gingerbread people?

And their houses?

She really likes gingerbread.

The gingerbread, too.

Now everything that's usually scrumptious, isn't.

This is definitely a Word Mystery.

It's The Case of the Disappearing Donuts.

And it's up to us Word Detectives

to solve it!

Baker Graham, if you tell us what happened,

I'll show us what happened,

with Sly-mation.

What's Sly-mation?

Animation that Sly makes.

[Sly] Recap time!

[Baker Graham] This morning,

I decided to make scrumptious donuts

to put on display, so everyone who comes in can see them.

I decorated them on the counter,

and posted a photo on my website.

[camera clicks]

Then, Athlete Glory and Vet Wilder came in.

Before I could help them both,

I went to check my oven in the back.

But when I got back,

my customers, and my donuts, were gone!

Can you show us the counter behind you?

It's the scene of the mystery,

the last place the donuts were seen.

Of course.

[Gabby] Hmm, interesting.

I'm saving this screenshot for our case notes.

Gabby, have you seen enough?

Absolutely, we'll start investigating,

and get back to you.

Hurry, Word Detectives!

Time to start our case notes.

We know what happened.

Someone took the scrumptious donuts,

and nothing tastes good.

We know where it happened, The Bakery.

And that it happened when Baker Graham

went to his oven in the back.

[Sly] Our suspects are: Athlete Glory,

and Vet Wilder.

Now, to figure out who took the donuts,

how, and why.

Luckily, there were some clues.

Sprinkles and crumbs all belong on a bakery counter,

but I see money, and...

Words written in icing?

I'm zooming in.

"For Yummy." Huh?

"Yummy" means the same thing as "scrumptious."

They're synonyms.

You can say something that tastes good is scrumptious,

or that it's yummy.

But who wrote it?

We have to interview our suspects to figure that out.

Let's start with Athlete Glory.

[phone ringing]

Word Detectives! Thank goodness!

Something's wrong with my brownie!

That's why we're calling.

What were you doing at The Bakery today?

Trying to buy a scrumptious donut,

but Baker Graham said they were for his display case,

not for sale, so I got this brownie instead.

You sound disappointed about that.

I had my heart set on a donut.

When I got back here to my gym,

I took a bite of my brownie.

It was not delicious,

and definitely disappointing.

Interesting. We'll get back to you.

Athlete Glory was disappointed

the scrumptious donuts were for display.

-Suspicious. -[Gabby] Very.

But we should hear what Vet Wilder has to say.

[phone ringing]

Word Detectives, nice to see you.

Thanks, Vet Wilder.

We're calling on official word mystery business.

Why were you at The Bakery today?

To pick up treats for my party.

You're having a party?

Is it your birthday?

Did I forget to send you a card?

No, the party's for the new cat I adopted.

Here she is.

[cat meows]

[purring]

Very cute, but let's stick to the case.

Anything happen out of the ordinary

at The Bakery today?

Well, before I could talk to Baker Graham,

he ran off.

So I grabbed my order,

left money and a note,

then it was time to get back here

for Yummy's party.

Your new cat's name is Yummy?

As in, the synonym for scrumptious?

Scrumptious is a fancy way to say yummy.

But I think yummy sounds way cuter.

And my new cat is a cutie.

I can't deny that.

We'll call you back.

What did we learn from questioning our suspects?

[Sly] Athlete Glory was disappointed

Baker Graham wouldn't sell her a scrumptious donut.

[Gabby] But Vet Wilder has a new cat named Yummy,

and "for Yummy" was written in icing

on The Bakery counter.

Vet Wilder also said he left a note.

And that yummy is a cuter way to say scrumptious.

You thinking who I'm thinking, Sly?

I am!

I think.

Let's show everyone how it happened.

[phone ringing]

Now presenting, the Word Mystery

animated re-enactment of...

[Gabby's voice] Hello, Baker Graham,

can I buy a scrumptious donut?

No, sorry, they're only for display.

But you can buy a brownie.

[oven dings]

I have to check my oven.

[Sly's voice] Huh, I ordered donuts that say "Yummy,"

but "scrumptious" means the same thing.

They're synonyms,

so this must be my order.

I'll leave money and a note.

I don't see a pen, so I'll use icing.

This money is for Yummy.

Vet Wilder is who did it!

-What? -How could you?

He grabbed the scrumptious donuts and left,

that's how he did it.

I did it?

He ordered "Yummy" donuts,

and since the word "scrumptious" means the same thing,

he thought Baker Graham got mixed up.

That's why he did it.

Oops, I guess I did.

Oh, that's right, you ordered "Yummy" donuts

for your new pet party.

I totally forgot about your order

when I was making my scrumptious donuts.

I'm so sorry, Vet Wilder.

I'm sorry, too.

I didn't mean to make it so nothing tastes scrumptious

or yummy in Wordsville.

-Including my cookie. -And the gingerbread.

Not to mention the brownie.

I'll return these donuts to The Bakery,

so the words "scrumptious" and "yummy" can come back.

I have my donuts again!

Just let me do a taste test.

Mmm!

I'm back in the scrumptious business.

Come on down and get one, everyone.

I'll be right there.

And I'll come get my donuts when they're ready.

Thanks, Word Detectives!

The Case of the Disappearing Donuts, closed.

Another Word Mystery solved.

Nice work, Sly.

You too, Gabby.

But you know what I'm excited about?

Eating your cookie?

Obviously!

But let's get you some gingerbread.

That would be scrumptious.

And yummy, too.

Hey, Gabby. That's weird.

I wanted to ask you something, but I can't.

Just a sec, I'm checking to see if Artist Clay posted

about his top secret masterpiece yet.

No one even knows he's working on it.

Oops, I shouldn't have said that.

Don't worry, he told me about it too.

I guess, he's not that good at keeping things top secret.

[chuckles] No, he is not.

-[calling tone beeping] -Reporter Read's calling.

Normally, I would ask about the reason,

but I guess, I'll just answer.

Word Detectives, I need your help.

Something seems to be wrong.

Huh, I meant to ask that as a question.

That's why I'm calling!

Something is missing.

This photo is from the newsroom party.

But you're the only one who works in the newsroom.

That's not the point, this board shows how

I investigate a news story.

First step I take is to inquire

by asking questions about what I'm investigating.

Look!

[ominous instrumental playing]

[Sly] The word "inquire" is gone.

I think it's a good job for later.

[Gabby] Now I understand why we can't ask questions.

"'Inquire' means to ask someone for information."

As in, "I would inquire

how this happened, but I can't!"

If we can't ask for information,

we can't solve this Word Mystery.

We can still investigate, we just need to do it

without inquiring or asking questions.

Wait, on Reporter Read's board, it says "observe."

Observations are what we make when we watch and notice things.

And I observe a big glob of slime

in the scene of the mystery, there!

The slime is Scientist Cosmo's invention.

He was here earlier.

Tell us what happened, so Sly can animate it for us.

-[Sly] Recap time! -[Reporter Read] Scientist Cosmo

asked me to take back a story I wrote yesterday

about his invention, Sticky Slime.

It's supposed to stick stuff together,

but it didn't work.

So I wrote an article about it.

He said he fixed the formula,

but when he showed it to me,

it exploded and slime went everywhere.

There was no way I could take back my story after that.

As I cleaned up, Artist Clay came

to take some old newspapers.

I was going to interview him about his new masterpiece,

but by the time I set up my voice recorder,

both of them and the word "inquire"

were gone.

That must have been upsetting.

Yes, it was.

That gives me an idea.

We can use statements to get information.

But questions ask something, and statements tell something.

Exactly, Sly, make a statement that tells us something

that Reporter Read can agree or disagree with.

Okay, Baker Graham and Firefighter Ember

came to the newsroom today.

No, Artist Clay and Scientist Cosmo

came to the newsroom today.

I get it, if I tell Reporter Read

the word "inquire" went missing--

Yes, you are correct.

Ah, I see how this works.

And we'll work out this Word Mystery.

Case notes, but with no questions.

On it. You know what happened.

Someone took the word "inquire,"

and now no one can ask questions.

This is where it happened, the newsroom.

This is when it happened,

as Reporter Read set up her recorder.

Our suspects are Scientist Cosmo and Artist Clay.

Now to find out who did it, how and why.

Let's start with Scientist Cosmo.

[calling tone beeping]

Word Detectives, something happened.

Something bad, I can't ask any questions,

and asking why and how things happen

is the point of being a scientist.

That's because the word "inquire" is missing.

Please respond to some statements, so we can

-figure out what happened. -Certainly.

Today you went to the newsroom.

Yes, I wanted Reporter Read

to take back that insensitive story

she printed about my Sticky Slime.

She wouldn't even ask me one question

about my new formula.

She was too busy inquiring about Artist Clay's

top secret masterpiece, which we all know about.

There's something weird going on with your hands.

My Sticky Slime kind of exploded in the newsroom.

I cleaned it up, and I got Sticky Slime on my hands

and now everything I touch sticks to me.

That's amazing. We'll be in touch.

[Gabby] Uh-oh, you're stuck on the call.

Maybe try using your nose.

Scientist Cosmo was upset

Reporter Read wouldn't take back her story

or inquire about his new formula.

Let's see what Artist Clay has to say.

[calling tone beeping]

Hello, Word Detectives.

You have called for a reason, I assume.

Artist Clay, we need you to respond

to some statements like...

The top secret masterpiece is ready,

and you want to show us.

I don't know what you mean.

Okay, here's our next statement.

You went to the newsroom today.

Yes, I needed old newspapers

for, um, no reason.

I was about to take them, and go

when Reporter Read stopped me to do an interview.

You mean you asked Reporter Read

if you could take the old newspapers.

[laughs] No, asking questions would have wasted time.

Now, I must get back to what I was doing before.

-[call ending tone] -Case notes time.

[Gabby] Scientist Cosmo wanted Reporter Read

to take back her Sticky Slime story,

but we know he loves questions.

And Artist Clay does not.

He took the old newspaper without asking.

[Gabby] He also didn't want to talk

about his new top secret masterpiece

with us or Reporter Read.

[gasps] Now we know how it happened.

Let's show everybody else.

[calling tone beeping]

Now presenting the Word Mystery

animated re-enactment of...

The Case with No Questions.

[Scientist Cosmo's voice] Reporter Read, please

take back that story about my Sticky Slime.

-[Gabby's voice] No. -[Scientist Cosmo's voice] Okay.

Then do a report on my new formula.

It's super sticky now.

[Gabby's voice] Definitely no.

Artist Clay!

[Artist Clay's voice] I'm taking these old newspapers.

[Gabby's voice] I want to inquire

about your rumored art project.

I'll get my voice recorder, and interview you.

[Artist Clay's voice] I'd rather you didn't inquire.

Artist Clay is who did it!

-I knew it! -He took the word "inquire"

when Reporter Read wasn't looking, that's how.

And he didn't want Reporter Read to ask him any questions.

That's why he did it.

You're right, the article is going to reveal

that I am working on a top secret masterpiece.

I didn't know it was a secret.

-Everyone knew about it. -Tell me who.

-[all] Me. -Me too.

Oh, sorry if I've been cranky.

My masterpiece still needs something.

Normally, I'd ask myself what's missing.

But I can't.

Because I took "inquire."

I must return it right away, so I can finish my art.

[calling tone beeping]

The word "inquire" is back!

Feels good to ask questions again, right?

It does, I'm sorry for taking

the word "inquire" from Wordsville.

May I put a picture of your masterpiece

in the newspaper?

Great question. You may.

And my new masterpiece is ready.

Here it is!

-Nice job, Artist Clay. -It's beautiful!

Isn't it magnificent?

The question mark is what was missing.

[together] Thanks, Word Detectives!

[call ending tone]

But Gabby, I have to ask,

what does Artist Clay's masterpiece mean?

I think we're supposed to find our own answers

to that question.

[both laughing]

Wordsville Fair Day, can't wait to check out

the yummy goodies today.

And I can't wait to see everyone's

one-of-a-kind crafts and creations.

I just hope there aren't

any Word Mysteries today that ruin it.

I just hope there aren't

any Word Mysteries today that ruin it.

[both] I just said that! Hey!

You're saying what I'm saying!

Okay, you can stop copying me now.

-[calling tone beeping] -[both] Artist Clay's calling.

Maybe this is a Word Mystery.

Help, my sculpture's missing, this one!

[Gabby, Sly] A sculpture of the word "unique"?

Yes, and without it I have

no original or creative ideas!

[both] This must be why we keep copying each other.

Okay, let's take turns talking.

I'll go first. Okay, you go first.

Artist Clay, decide who goes first.

-Sly. -[Sly] I'll tell you the meaning

of "unique," and then we'll take turns.

The word "unique" means one of a kind.

My turn, so without the word "unique,"

everything will look and sound the same.

And nothing will be special.

It's terrible, I'm supposed to be

an original, unique artist,

but I'm just copying what I've done before!

With "unique" gone, does this mean no one can make

one-of-a-kind crafts or treats for the fair?

Oh, no, Artist Clay, tell us what happened,

and I'll animate it.

[Artist Clay] Firefighter Ember and Singer Melody

were at my studio making art.

I showed them my unique sculpture,

and told them my goal is always to make

a one-of-a-kind work of art.

I did a self-portrait.

Firefighter Ember followed me step by step,

and created an exact copy of my portrait.

I encouraged her to do something unique,

like how Singer Melody

used so many kinds of materials in her art.

It was so unusual, I couldn't tell what it was.

Then I left to get more paint.

When I came back, everyone was gone,

and so was my unique sculpture.

Fascinating, show us the scene of the mystery, please.

Just a moment.

This is the table where I had my unique sculpture.

[Sly] I'm taking a screenshot for our case notes.

Artist Clay, we will report back

-when we know more. -Please hurry.

-My artwork depends on it! -Case notes!

[Gabby] This is the Case of the Unique Tweak.

-So, what happened? -[Gabby] Someone took

the unique sculpture,

and now nothing is original or one-of-a-kind.

-[Sly] We're at the art studio. -[Gabby] And when did it happen?

[Sly] After Artist Clay left to get paint.

[Gabby] Firefighter Ember and Singer Melody

are our suspects.

[both] Now, who took it,

how and why?

Not again! We can't keep this up.

We better find "unique" quickly.

Let's look at the clues.

[Gabby] I see two portraits of Artist Clay.

One of these must be Firefighter Ember's.

-Let's call her. -[calling tone beeping]

I can't talk long, Word Detectives.

I'm giving a safety demonstration at the fair today,

but can't think of a way to make my tips stand out.

But you always have so many awesome ideas.

Used to, I guess, nothing I do now

feels original or memorable.

[Gabby and Sly] What happened at Artist Clay's

studio earlier today?

You're talking at the same time?

We're not having unique ideas either.

-Please answer the question. -I did exactly

what Artist Clay did, but when I showed him my work,

he told me to do something unique.

I didn't know how, that's why I copied him.

Then what happened?

Nothing, I left when he left.

I need to go work on my fire safety demo,

even if it won't be special.

-[call ending tone] -Hmm.

She doesn't think she's got any unique,

special, or one-of-a-kind ideas.

might have taken the unique sculpture.

Let's call Singer Melody, and get this case cracked.
