01x02 - The Case of the Uncompromising Community/The Case of the Swiped Scents/The Case of the Gone Gratitude

Post by bunniefuu »

Did a word that's important to you go missing?

And now all you can feel, do, or think

is the opposite of that word?

Then call us!

-I'm Sly. -And I'm Gabby.

We're Word Detectives, and we solve...

[both] Word Mysteries!

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

-Not to mention, briskly. -And swiftly.

Yeah, we're really good with words.

[kids] Wordsville!

Happy Friendiversary, Gabby!

Happy Friendiversary to you, Sly!

I can't wait to celebrate being

best friends together at the park.

The park? I want to celebrate with cupcakes and comics.

Wait, why are we disagreeing

on the one day a year we celebrate our friendship?

Look, Firefighter Ember's calling.

Maybe this is connected to a Word Mystery.

Word Detectives, help! Someone took my compromise mug.

This is it.

[Sly] It says compromise,

but that looks more like a bowl to me.

No way. The handle makes it a mug.

Actually, it's both.

I call it a mug, but I can use it as a bowl too.

It was given to me for being good at helping friends with

different ideas come to an agreement.

That's the definition of the word "compromise."

"Compromise" means an agreement made between people

with different ideas.

Sly, if the word compromise is missing,

that's why we quarreled.

We didn't quarrel. We disagreed.

Those words mean the same thing.

They're the opposite of compromise.

So now we're being uncompromising

by not changing our minds.

But the biggest problem by far is

that without my mug,

I have nothing for drinking hot chocolate.

We need to get you a cup ASAP.

No, we need to solve this case ASAP.

Firefighter Ember, tell us what happened so Sly can animate it.

Let's recap. I had a very busy day planned.

I promised to bake cookies with Baker Graham at two

and do a fire safety demonstration

for Reporter Reads news report also... at two.

Neither of them was happy that I made plans

with both of them at the same time.

I suggested we think of a compromise

on how we could help them both

over a nice mug of hot chocolate.

But when I finished making it,

both of them and my mug were gone.

And in its place, I found this.

I'll save this scene of

the mystery screenshot for our case note.

Don't worry, Firefighter Ember.

We'll solve this case.

Let's get through our case notes

without disagreeing.

So far, we know what happened.

Someone took Firefighter Ember's compromise mug

and now everyone is uncompromising and stubborn.

[Gabby] We know where it happened, the fire station,

when Firefighter Ember was busy making hot chocolate.

[Sly] The scene of the mystery clues are

a cookie cutter and a microphone.

[Gabby] And the suspects are Baker Graham and Reporter Read.

I'm sure Baker Graham did it.

I think it was Reporter Read.

We have to interview them both to figure out

who did it, how, and why.

Which suspect should we call first?

-[Gabby] Reporter Read. -[Sly] Baker Graham.

Let's decide by playing rock, paper, scissors.

-[both] Rock, paper, scissors, -[Gabby] Scissors!

Rock beats scissors. So I guess we'll start

by interviewing Baker Graham.

Word Detectives, sorry, can't talk right now.

My customers all want cookies

and my cookie cutter is missing.

They won't take "no" for an answer.

Sounds like they're being uncompromising.

I think his customers just know what they're like.

[sighs] I wish we weren't arguing on our friendiversary.

Baker Graham, can you tell us why you're at the fire station?

Firefighter Ember promised me we'd make cookies together,

but Reporter Read showed up saying

she had plans with Firefighter Ember at the exact same time.

-You sound frustrated by that. -I am.

Firefighter Ember said we should come up

with a compromise to fit in both activities, but, huh,

was not interested in changing my plans.

So when she went to make hot chocolate,

I left, just like I need to do now.

Baker Graham definitely did it.

He wasn't interested in compromising.

I still think it was Reporter Read.

It's time we interviewed her.

-[sighs] -Are you okay, Reporter Read?

Firefighter Ember was supposed to do

a fire safety demonstration for my news report,

but apparently she'd rather bake,

so I have to do it myself.

But I've misplaced my microphone and--

Your fire helmet is on backwards.

[groaning] Do you need something?

To know what happened at the fire station today.

Like I said, I needed Firefighter Ember to help me

with my news report, but when I got there,

Baker Graham was already there.

-Did that bother you? -Of course it did.

I made plans with my friends

and she made plans with someone else.

She wanted us to compromise

on what to do next,

but she wasn't willing to give me her full focus.

So I decided to go, which is what I'm going to do now.

Reporter Read definitely did it.

I still think Baker Graham did it.

Well, if we can't agree or compromise,

maybe reviewing the case notes will help.

[Sly] Both suspects left clues behind.

That must be Baker Graham's cookie cutter.

[Gabby] And that's Reporter Read's microphone.

[Sly] They were both upset Firefighter Ember made plans

with them at the same time.

And they were both unwilling

to compromise with Firefighter Ember.

[Gabby] But did they compromise with...

[both] With each other?

Great minds think alike. Let's reenact it.

Now presenting the Word Mystery animated re-enactment of...

The case of the uncompromising community.

[Gabby's voice] Baker Graham, you're here.

And Reporter Read, you're here too.

[Sly's voice] I am. It's Sue.

And fire safety demonstrations wait for no one.

[Gabby's voice] Of course. I was just--

[Sly's voice] About to make cookies with me,

but she made plans to do a demonstration for me.

[Gabby's voice] I may have accidentally made

plans with both of you, but I'm sure we can find

a compromise over some delicious hot chocolate.

[Sly's voice] I don't want to compromise.

I don't want to compromise either.

My plans with my friends are important to me.

[Gabby's voice] Mine too. Let's take our mugs

so we don't need to compromise.

[Sly's voice] Just because Firefighter Ember made plans

with both of us.

Even though Sly and I didn't agree on who we thought did it.

We were both right.

It was Baker Graham and Reporter Read.

-Both of you. -They took the compromise mug

together when Firefighter Ember was making hot chocolate.

-That's how. -They were upset

Firefighter Ember made plans with both of them.

And they didn't want to find a compromise on what to do next.

That's why they did it.

It's true. We did it.

-I'm sorry. -I'm sorrier.

I'm sorriest.

Um, can you stop disagreeing

so I can get my mug back?

Finally, we can sit down with some hot chocolate

and find compromises for everyone.

Well, a kitchen is a good place

to do a fire safety demonstration.

And the more cooks, the more cookies.

Are you suggesting we compromise

and do both activities together?

[all] We are.

Thanks, Detectives.

Another Word Mystery solved.

Even without us agreeing along the way.

Now that's friendship.

You ready to start celebrating our Friendiversary?

Only if we celebrate with...

Scrumptious cupcakes and comics!

Which we can read and eat in the park, picnic style.

A perfect "compromise."

Nothing like the smell of a lemony fresh work surface

in the morning. [sniffs]

Sly, something's wrong.

I know! I keep scratching

these scratch-and-sniff pizza stickers, but...

[sniffs] ...there's no cheese and pepperoni smells to sniff.

And I can't sniff a whiff of my fresh desk.

I'd say I smell a Word Mystery,

but I can't smell a thing!

Scientist Cosmo's calling, so it probably is a Word Mystery.

Word Detectives, something's wrong.

Someone swiped my smell machine. This one.

[Sly] Why does your smell machine

say "stench" and "aroma"?

I'm doing a smell experiment.

Those words are for different smells.

You're right. The dictionary says

a "stench" is a gross smell,

but an "aroma" is a scent or an odour that smells nice.

Like a lemony fresh desk in the morning.

-That's specific. -Wait. If these words are gone,

is that why I couldn't smell my pizza stickers?

It must be. And why I couldn't smell my newly cleaned desk.

And why I can't smell the salmon sandwich

I forgot to eat last week.

Ew!

Wow! We've never had two words go missing at the same time.

Scientist Cosmo, tell us what happened,

-and Sly will animate it. -[Sly] Recap time!

[Cosmo]Vet Wilder and Reporter Read

were helping me with my smell experiment,

and I sprayed different odours to see how they reacted.

If they like it, they'd say "aroma."

If they didn't, they'd say "stench."

But when I sprayed the scent of peaches,

Vet Wilder said "stench"

and started sniffling in a handkerchief.

And Reporter Read did not like the smell of freshly cut grass.

She called it a stench and said, "Nothing to see here."

I went to get my clipboard

so I can ask them about their reactions.

But when I got back, they were both gone,

and so was my machine!

Now no one can smell anything!

I love a sweet scent, but I can't say I'll miss

the stinky stench of rotten eggs.

All smells are important.

Aromas can remind us of happy memories.

And stenches can alert us to risks,

like if food has gone bad and can make us sick.

Not being able to smell is a big problem.

So big, we should take a look at the scene of the mystery.

Here, let me show you.

[Sly] I'm taking a screenshot for our Case Notes.

-You good to go, Gabby? -Sure am, Sly.

Scientist Cosmo, we'll sniff out the scent stealer.

Please do. Bye.

Opening up our Case Notes.

We know the what and the where.

[Gabby] Someone took the aroma and stench machine

from the Science Lab.

Now no one can smell anything.

And it happened when Scientist Cosmo

left to get his clipboard.

Our suspects are Reporter Read and Vet Wilder.

Now to find out who did it, how, and why.

[Sly] Vet Wilder was sniffling in a handkerchief,

and I'm guessing that's Reporter Read's notepad.

Reporter Read had a weird reaction

to the odour of cut grass.

But Vet Wilder not liking the aroma of peaches

-is pretty suspicious. -You're right.

How can you not like the smell of peaches?

Let's call him and find out.

Word Detectives! Can't talk long.

I'm in the middle of something.

-Are you okay? -What happened?

It's weird. Sully the skunk escaped his habitat

and sprayed the whole clinic with his stinky scent.

-Is that the weird part? -No.

Usually I have to wear one of these

to wash the stench off the animals.

But turns out I can't smell a thing.

It's happening all over town.

You helped Scientist Cosmo with his smell experiment today,

-correct? -Yes.

Every spray had an awesome aroma

until, ugh, the stench of peaches.

But peaches smell delicious!

Oh, yeah? Tell that to my allergy.

I'm allergic to stone fruit.

-Still not helping. -Any fruit with a pit

like peaches, nectarines, or cherries.

If I even smell a stone fruit,

my nose runs so fast I can't catch it.

Wait. My handkerchief is missing.

It's at the scene of the swiped scent.

-That's the Science Lab. -I must've dropped it there

-when I left. -[splashing, whining]

[sighs] Gotta go. The dogs are splashing around

like it's a puppy water park. Okay, bye.

If Vet Wilder took the smell machine,

-then no more peach odour. -And no more runny nose.

Two reasons to put Vet Wilder at the top of our suspect list.

At least until we talk to Reporter Read.

Hey, Reporter Read. What are you sniffing around for?

Word Detectives! I want to write an article

about how much better fake grass is than real grass, but--

You can't find your notepad. You left it at the Science Lab.

And I love the aroma of real grass.

It reminds me of summertime.

I think you mean stench.

And fake grass means no grass to cut,

and no slippery grass for me to slip on, and...

Um, never mind.

I don't even wanna think about it. I gotta go.

She left in a real hurry.

-Did she seem embarrassed? -For sure.

Maybe reviewing her Case Notes will help us figure out why.

[Gabby] Vet Wilder thinks peaches stink

-because of his allergy. -[Sly] And Reporter Read thinks

freshly cut grass has a stench.

And she was acting embarrassed. But why?

Scientist Cosmo said smells can remind us of happy memories.

But can they remind us of bad memories, too?

I smell a break in the case.

Not really. I can't smell anything.

-But this is good, right? -Yep. Time to show everybody

how and why the scents went bye-bye.

Now presenting the Word Mystery Animated Reenactment of...

"The Case of the Swiped Scents."

"Is this an aroma or a stench?"

[Gabby]"Ew, peaches!"

[Sly]"Interesting. How about this odour?"

[Gabby]"Ew, freshly cut grass.

I do not like this embarrassing stench."

[Sly]"Fascinating. I'll get my clipboard."

[Gabby]"If I take away all aromas and stenches,

I'll never have to remember what

freshly cut grass reminds me of."

[Wilder blowing nose]

[Sly]"All my smells are gone!

This stinks!"

-That last part didn't happen. -But the rest did.

Reporter Read is who took the smell machine.

-[Cosmo gasps] -I knew it wasn't me.

She did it when Scientist Cosmo

left to get his clipboard and Vet Wilder was sneezing.

-That's how. -Why? Because the odour

of freshly cut grass reminds her of something embarrassing.

He's right. A few years ago,

I was doing a press conference for the whole town.

As I walked to the stage, I slipped.

On freshly cut grass.

I stood up, then slipped again.

Then again! I got grass stains all over my clothes.

I took the smell machine so no one has to remember

that kind of memory again.

-Especially me. -If that happened to me,

I would think freshly cut grass was a stinky stench too.

Me too. I'm sorry, Reporter Read.

But aromas and stenches can remind us

of good times and the bad.

I guess I do kind of miss the smell

of my favourite note-taking pencil.

I do miss the smell of my pets.

Like I miss my pizza stickers.

And I miss my lemony fresh desk.

That's very... specific.

I'm sorry, Scientist Cosmo.

I'll return your machine right away.

Thanks, Word Detectives. Now that aromas and stenches

are back, I can continue with my smell experiment.

I think I'll skip this one.

[sniffing] Ew, what is that stench?

-A week-old salmon sandwich? -Where did I put that?

-Ugh! -[shuddering]

[all] Thanks, Word Detectives!

Ah, the sweet smell of victory.

[sniffing]

[exhales] Lemony fresh desk.

-Pizza. -[chuckles]

So, you haven't said anything about the recipe I sent you.

-How is it? -It's soup.

I said thank you when you sent it, didn't I?

It's still nice to hear if you liked it.

[Gabby gasps]

You used my book as a coaster?

But I thought you were grateful I lent it to you.

I was grateful, but now, I'm... not.

So we're both feeling ungrateful?

Which is weird.

-Could this be a-- -Word Mystery?

Singer Melody is calling.

Word Detectives, it's terrible!

[Gabby and Sly] What?

I've no fan mail, and I'm missing a thank-you card

with the word "gratitude" on the front.

I liked it so much, I took a photo.

See?

But now-- [sobs]

The dictionary says...

So, without gratitude,

no one feels like saying "thank you."

This is a Word Mystery, all right.

Singer Melody, tell us what happened,

and I'll animate it.

Recap time!

[Singer Melody] Well, I was super busy writing a song

for my amazing fans,

when Artist Clay came in with a portrait of me.

He also offered to fix the purple paint on my wall.

It was peeling.

Then Athlete Glory came in.

She wanted to show me a trophy she had won

with the basketballs I donated to the gym.

And some exercises she had worked on for me.

But, I was super busy writing a song,

so I asked them to wait.

Before I could talk to them, they left.

And my gratitude card was gone, too.

Interesting. Can you show us the scene of the mystery?

[Singer Melody] This is where I last saw my card.

[Sly] I'll take a screenshot for our case notes.

Don't worry, Singer Melody, we'll solve this.

Be quick about it, will you?

I need my fan mail!

She could've said thank you.

Actually, she couldn't, because someone took

her gratitude card.

[Sly] Oh, right, that's what happened,

and now we all feel ungrateful.

Her recording studio is where it happened,

and the card was taken when Artist Clay

and Athlete Glory came over.

They're our suspects.

Now, to investigate who did it,

how, and why.

Let's go over clues from the scene of the mystery.

There's a Singer Melody portrait

with a trophy sticking right through it.

It's hard to miss.

Singer Melody said Artist Clay brought her a portrait.

Let's start with him.

[ringing]

Hey, Word Detectives.

Hello, what happened when you visited Singer Melody today?

I wanted to give her a portrait I had made of her.

It was my way of saying thank you for her music,

which inspires me.

-Did she love it? -I still don't know.

As I waited for her to look at it,

I repainted the peeling purple paint on her wall.

That was nice of you.

It was.

Athlete Glory came by to see her, too.

But Singer Melody was super busy,

so she never even looked up.

Athlete Glory and I gave up waiting,

put our things down on a table,

and left together.

Hmm.

What are you painting now?

Nothing.

Huh, it's very dark.

Well, bye.

Leaving without thanking me for my time?

So ungrateful. [sighs]

Oh, okay, uh...

Artist Clay did something nice

by repainting Singer Melody's wall.

Would he then do something not nice,

like take her gratitude card?

I'm not sure.

Let's hear what Athlete Glory has to say.

[ringing]

Oh. Hi, Word Detectives.

Are you sh**ting the basketballs

Singer Melody donated to your gym

into the trash?

I think it's pretty obvious that's exactly what I'm doing.

I was grateful to her,

but not anymore.

Not since I visited her.

What happened?

I went there to thank her for the new basketballs

and show her the trophy we won with them,

but Singer Melody never looked at me.

Not even to see the new cardio exercises

I came up with to help with her high-energy performances.

She said she was "super busy."

Did that make you super sad?

Sad enough to take her gratitude card?

No, I put the trophy on the table,

so she could see it later.

I said goodbye to Artist Clay, and left.

Well, don't worry, Athlete Glory,

we'll solve this Word Mystery,

for all the people in Wordsville!

Whatever.

Oh! No one seems grateful for our hard work,

trying to solve this Word Mystery!

I feel you, partner.

But we don't solve Word Mysteries for the thank yous.

I know, it's what we do.

Let's go over our case notes.

Artist Clay painted Singer Melody's portrait,

and repainted her purple wall for her.

And Athlete Glory came up with exercises for her,

and brought a trophy for her to see.

But Singer Melody was super busy,

and kept both suspects waiting so long,

they left.

Athlete Glory said she put down her trophy,

and said goodbye to Artist Clay,

but he said they left together.

That's strange.

Wait.

The portrait is on top of the trophy.

Which means...

It was put down after the trophy!

Not at the same time.

[Sly] And there are purple thumbprints on it.

You thinking what I'm thinking?

I sure am, Sly. I sure am.

[ringing]

Now presenting the Word Mystery animated re-enactment of...

[Sly's voice] Hi, Singer Melody.

Look, I painted your portrait to say thank you

for the way your music inspires me.

[Gabby's voice] Just a minute.

I'm super busy writing a song.

[Sly's voice] I'll just repaint this purple wall

while I wait.

[Gabby's voice] Singer Melody, I'm so grateful

for those new basketballs you donated.

Look what they helped us win.

Just a minute! Still super busy.

Okay, I also came up with some new exercises for you.

But I'll wait 'til you're finished.

She's still too busy?

Oh! I guess I'll just go.

[Sly's voice] Somebody needs a lesson in gratitude.

[Gabby's voice] Did you say something?

Super busy over here.

Artist Clay is who did it!

[gasps] Artist Clay!

How could you do this to me?

He grabbed the gratitude card after Athlete Glory left.

That's how.

It's true.

Singer Melody didn't bother to look at my portrait

or Athlete Glory's trophy.

She wasn't acting grateful.

And that hurt.

I understand. I felt hurt, too.

I wanted Singer Melody to know how that feels.

Which is why I took the card.

But I did something not nice,

when I really just wanted to do something nice.

-I'm sorry. -I'm sorry, too.

I was grateful, but I was so busy writing a song

for my amazing fans,

that I guess I forgot to say it.

[gasps] But that gives me an idea for a song

I'll sing for you all when gratitude is returned.

I'll bring the card back right away.

And fix your portrait.
