02x04 - The Case of the Failure Fiasco/The Case of the Organized Crime/The Case of the Persuasive Person

Post by bunniefuu »

Did a word that's important to you go missing?

And now all you can feel, do, or think

is the opposite of that word?

-Then call us! I'm Sly. -And I'm Gabby.

We're Word Detectives, and we solve...

[both] Word Mysteries!

Together, we run the Wordsville Online Detective Agency.

We'll find your missing word, fast.

-Not to mention briskly. -And swiftly.

Yeah, we're really good with words.

[both]Wordsville!

-You ready? -I hope so.

[both blow]

Whoa! This spoon trick has never worked for us before.

Today, everything we're doing is working.

Wait, do you think it's a...

[Sly] Word Mystery? Maybe.

Scientist Cosmo's calling.

Word Detectives, something horrid, horrific,

and horrendous has happened, and I--

Why are there spoons on your noses?

Because it's the best day ever.

This "stick a spoon on your nose" trick

never worked for us before.

Everything that we've done today has been a non-stop success.

That's the problem!

Look.

[Gabby] Hmm, "success" and "failure."

[Sly] "Failure" means lack of success in achieving a goal.

Exactly. I record all outcomes of my experiments in my notes

so I know what did or didn't work.

But I can't do that anymore, see?

Someone took the word "failure."

And because success is the opposite of failure....

That must be why we've been so successful today.

This is a Word Mystery.

One that you have to solve, fast.

Do we, though? I really like that

we haven't failed at anything today.

But learning from failure is important.

It can help you figure out why something isn't working

so you can do better the next time.

Sly, we do need to solve this case.

We do.

Scientist Cosmo, tell us what happened,

and I'll animate it. Recap time!

[Cosmo]I was working on a new steam-cleaning robot--

it uses a little steam to clean up dirt--

when Firefighter Ember and Baker Graham came by.

They both wanted me to invent something for them,

but I couldn't hear or see them.

My robot was failing.

It was making a lot of noise and too much steam.

Once they left, the steam cleared,

and the robot suddenly worked perfectly

without me fixing it.

That's when I saw the word "failure"

had been torn off my notes!

Interesting.

Can you please show us the scene of the mystery?

Of course. This is where I left my notes.

[Sly] I'll take a screenshot for our Case Notes.

[camera shutter clicks]

Please hurry.

We'll solve this case as fast as we can

and call you back.

We know what happened.

Someone took the word "failure"

from Scientist Cosmo's lab notes.

And now we're achieving all of our goals,

which feels great, but...

We can't fail, so we can't learn from our mistakes.

Yep. We know where it happened: the Lab,

when it was filling up with steam.

[Sly] Our suspects are Firefighter Ember

and Baker Graham.

Now to find out who did it, how, and why.

[Gabby] We also found a pink smudge and a bucket as clues.

[Sly] Do you think that bucket looks familiar?

Kind of like the one--

Firefighter Ember has at the Fire Station!

Yes! Let's call her.

Just one... second.

[Emkber grunts]

Yes!

I've never been able to reach my goal of

getting across the room without spilling any water before,

but I just did it!

Whoo-hoo!

You seem pretty happy about that.

I am! I get really upset when I fail.

Hmm. Is that why you left a red bucket at the Lab?

Yes, I wanted Scientist Cosmo

to invent me a spill-proof bucket.

I brought that red one to show how I always spill,

but he couldn't see me through the steam.

Anyway, I want to find out

if I can go even further without spilling.

Gotta go.

Hmm, do you think Firefighter Ember

took the word "failure"?

It's possible she did want to successfully

carry her water buckets without spilling.

Let's call our next suspect to see what else we can learn.

Word Detectives, what do you think?

Ooh, they look scrumptious.

Can we stop by and have one,

or two, or three--

Sly, let's focus.

Baker Graham, could you put away the cookies?

They're not just cookies, they're lemon macarons.

I finally reached my goal of making a perfect batch.

I made some strawberry ones this morning

that were total failures.

Is that why you went to see Scientist Cosmo today?

I went to ask him to invent me a better oven.

You think your bad batch was the oven's fault?

Isn't it possible that you maybe made a mistake with the recipe?

[Graham] I don't like thinking about my failures.

Why dwell in the past, am I right?

What's that on your hand?

Oh, strawberry icing, from earlier.

I'm always covered in icing.

I should get back to baking.

Bye!

Let's go over what we learned.

[Sly] Firefighter Ember gets upset when she fails.

[Gabby] And Baker Graham doesn't like

thinking about his failures.

Let's look at the clues.

[Gabby] We've got the bucket Firefighter Ember left

for Scientist Cosmo,

and a pink smudge.

[Sly] Hmm, what is that smudge from?

[Gabby] It's pink, just like the strawberry icing

Baker Graham had on his hand from his macarons.

The failed ones he didn't want to think about, or learn from.

Wait. Firefighter Ember did try to show

Scientist Cosmo how she spills water.

In case he could learn from her failure.

Sly, we just cracked this case!

Let's show everyone what happened.

Now presenting, the animated Word Mystery reenactment of...

"The Case of the Failure Fiasco."

[Gabby]"Steam cleaning robot, Test Two.

My first test was a failure, but I changed the settings.

Here we go."

[Sly imitating robot beeping, whirring]

[Sly]"Can you invent me a spill-proof bucket?

I'll show you how water spills from this one."

"First, can you invent me a better oven?

My macarons are failures."

[Gabby]"Sorry, I can't hear you!

My robot is failing."

[Sly]"Failure? I can't stand failure!

I don't think anyone will miss it."

[Gabby]"What is happening?

So much steam!"

It was Baker Graham who did it!

-[gasps] -It was you?

He tore the word "failure"

off of Scientist Cosmo's notes.

When everyone was distracted by the steam and noisy robot.

-That's how. -Why, Baker Graham, why?

Oh, fine, you're right.

My macaron failure was so upsetting,

I didn't want anyone else to feel like that.

But failures can lead to new discoveries.

If we never do something wrong, how do we learn to do it right?

Do we need to learn that?

These lemon macarons are already perfect.

[all] But why are they perfect?

I don't know.

Well, if you all miss failure so much,

I'll return the word.

And we'll see if it's something I can learn from.

Yes! Now that the word "failure" is back,

my robot is over-steaming again,

and I can figure out why!

Did everyone get my other delivery?

I got a flat macaron, but why?

They're from my first failed batch.

If I have to learn from failure,

I want to do it together.

One, two, three, bite.

[all] Mmm!

It's sort of like a really flat cookie.

That gives me an idea.

The macookie.

Half macaron, half cookie.

I better start baking!

Huh. Failure is important.

Without it, I never would've invented this.

[all] Thanks, Word Detectives!

Another Word Mystery solved.

So, spoon on nose round two?

-You're on! -[blowing]

Why do we keep failing? [laughs]

Let's figure it out.

Together.

That might've worked. Let's see!

Oh! Ohh!

Books I've read once.

Books I've read...

Twice.

And... [sighs]

Books I've read times or more.

Hey, what do you think everyone else is bringing

to trade at Athlete Glory's stuff swap?

I hope it's books.

I know exactly what I'm bringing, Gabby.

Check it out.

No offense, Sly, but how do you find anything in that mess?

I got a system.

That's my stuff swap pile. Ignore the rest.

Okay, but Athlete Glory said she wanted everything

for the swap to be organized in boxes.

It's on the flyer. I have it here somewhere.

Bet I can find that flyer faster than you.

That flyer-- Oh, no.

My office. It's a mess!

My system!

Was this shirt supposed to be swapped?

[Gabby] Athlete Glory's calling.

I hope this mess is because of a word mystery.

Athlete Glory, how's the stuff swap going?

Awful. My binder's missing. This one.

[Sly] Oh, your binder has the word organized on it.

Organized means having things arranged,

sorted, or grouped in a particular way.

-Like my system. -Sure.

Organizing things makes them easier to find.

Exactly.

And until my binder's found,

everything in Wordsville will be a complete mess.

Like my gym is now. See?

That is a mess.

Tell us exactly what happened

when your binder went missing

and I'll animate it.

Recap time!

[Athlete Glory] I was here at the gym

sorting the stuff swap items that had

already come into two categories.

Sports stuff and non-sports stuff.

Reporter Read came by to interview me for a story

about the swap when Vet Wilder showed up and made a big stink.

I was so frustrated that I took a run around

the gym to clear my head.

But when I got back, Vet Wilder, Reporter Read,

and my binder were gone.

I see. Can you show us this scene

of the mystery one more time?

If you're sure you can handle seeing this mess again.

[Sly] I'll take a screenshot for our case notes.

Thanks, Word Detectives.

I hope you can sort out this mess.

Okay, let's open up the case notes.

I'm beginning to see why organization

might be important.

[Gabby] So messy. [shutters]

But at least we know what happened.

Athlete Glory's binder

with "Organized" on it went missing.

We know where it happened,

the gym, and we know when it happened.

As she went for a run to clear her head,

and we know Vet Wilder and Reporter Read were there.

They're our suspects.

Now all we need to figure out is who did it, how, and why.

Let's call our first suspect, Reporter Read.

[ringing]

Word Detectives.

Vet Wilder? I meant to call Reporter Read.

Even my contact list is disorganized.

It can't be more messy than these leashes

I'm trying to sort.

I know you're a bit tied up, but can we ask you

some questions about the stuff swap?

Sure.

Athlete Glory said you two had a disagreement.

She organized everything by whether or not

it was sports stuff.

-And you had a better way? -Yeah.

Stuff should be arranged by how pet friendly it is.

Whoa!

Vet Wilder, are you okay?

I'm okay, I should have taken these leashes

to the stuff swap too.

Excuse me.

Vet Wilder just admitted he and Athlete Glory

disagreed over how everything for the stuff swap

should be sorted and grouped.

Maybe he was so annoyed he took the organized binder.

But we should still talk to Reporter Read.

Oh, uh, Sly, you try calling this time.

Reporter Read, it's actually you!

Who else would I be?

We've been having some trouble

since the word "Organized" went missing.

And it looks like you've been hit really hard.

My newsroom was already like this.

So much news has been happening in Wordsville lately

that I've been too busy to organize anything.

Except my reporter notes.

Sometimes work can take over your life.

And your space.

No kidding.

I'm amazed you were able to find anything

to bring to the stuff swap in that mess.

Oh, I had no problem finding stuff.

But what did you drop off at the swap anyway?

I bet it's super cool.

I've listed all, but I have to get back

to writing my story. Bye!

Well, she's acting suspiciously.

But so is Vet Wilder.

He might have taken out the Glory's binder

since they argued on how things should be organized.

And Reporter Read started acting weird

when we asked her what she brought to the swap.

-I'll bring up the case notes. -No!

My bad.

[Gabby] At least one of these is case related.

The scene of the mystery from the gym.

Look at all the great stuff for swapping.

Inventions from Scientist Cosmo,

muffin tins from Baker Graham, a chew toy from Vet Wilder.

Yeah, but where's all the cool reporter stuff

Reporter Read said she brought?

That's not it. That's not it either.

Nope.Nada.

Sly, I think I just found a clue

in this chaos that'll sort out the case.

It's time to show everyone how this weird mystery happened.

Now presenting the word mystery animated re-enactment of...

the case of the organized crime.

Hi, Athlete Glory.

I'm here to write a story about the stuff swap.

[Gabby] Great. But first, what did you bring to the swap?

And is it sports or non-sports related?

That's how everything here is organized.

[Sly] Me? Uh... Oh look, it's Vet Wilder.

Here's all my pet-friendly stuff.

What are you doing? You can't sort just for sports.

-[Gabby] Why not? -[Sly] Think of the pets.

[Gabby] I need to take a lap.

[Sly] I don't want to be the only person

too disorganized to swap something.

Luckily, I know how to keep that to myself.

Who took the binder? Reporter Read.

Reporter Read?

She grabbed it when she was alone in the gym.

That's how.

We figured it out thanks to Sly's eyes.

I am pretty good at finding things in big messes.

Why did you do it, Reporter Read?

Because my newsroom is so disorganized

that I couldn't find anything to bring to the swap.

I got really embarrassed

when you asked me what I brought.

So I took your binder.

My binder!

I figured no one would notice I didn't bring anything

to the swap if the swap was disorganized too.

I'm sorry, everyone.

It was wrong of me to take this.

I'll return it as soon as...

-Where's Athlete Glory? -[knocking]

Wow, she's fast.

I'm so happy to get my binder back.

Time to get this stuff organized.

I wish I could bring something to the stuff swap,

but I still can't find anything in all this clutter.

Actually, once this is all cleaned up,

Athlete Glory and I have agreed to help

you find some things for the swap

by helping you sort out the newsroom.

Which we'll organize by sports reports.

I think you mean by animal stories.

Thanks, we're detectives.

-Nicely done, Gabby. -You too, Sly.

Hey, wanna stop by the newsroom to help?

Great idea!

Only my office is so messy

I can't get to the door.

Help?

Hey Gabby, I know what we should do

while we wait for someone to call.

-Watch cat videos! -Play video games!

Oh, come on, Gabby.

I can think of million reasons for cat videos.

Cuteness. Laughter. Mischief.

Huh, that's weird.

I can't think of any more.

Good, because now it's my turn

to convince you to play games.

Except, I can't think of anything either.

Sly, is this a word mystery?

Maybe Baker Graham knows.

Word Detectives, help!

Baker Graham, are you okay? Why are you on crutches?

I sprained my ankle, but that's not why I need your help.

Someone took the recipe card for my persuasion pie.

See, this is it.

[Gabby] That recipe card definitely

says "persuasion" on it.

[Sly] Persuasion means the act

of convincing someone to do something,

Usually by giving them good reasons to do it.

With the word persuasion missing, no one in town

would be able to persuade anyone to do anything.

This is why I couldn't convince you to watch

some purrfect cat videos.

And why I couldn't persuade you to play video games.

This is a word mystery, but

Baker Graham, what is a persuasion pie?

It's one of my delicious treats.

It smells so good.

I can always convince people

to take a little bite.

That's why I call it persuasion pie.

But now, it's gone!

Well, luckily, you don't need

to convince us to take the case.

Tell us what happened, and I'll animate it.

Recap time!

[Graham]I sprained my ankle

and can't move around that much,

so I had persuaded Singer Melody

to help me make some persuasion pies

for my customers.

I also convinced Athlete Glory

to help me do some things

around the bakery I can't do right now.

When I went to fix my bandage,

they both left, and somebody took

my persuasion pie recipe card.

See? This is where I last saw my recipe card.

[Sly] I'm saving this screenshot of the scene of the mystery.

Baker Graham, we'll get your recipe card

back before you know it.

Time to start our case notes.

What happened? Someone took Baker Graham's

persuasion pie recipe card.

Now no one can persuade or convince anyone to do anything.

We know where it happened. The bakery.

And it happened when Baker Graham

went to adjust his bandage.

[Gabby] Singer Melody and Athlete Glory are the suspects.

We have to find out who did it, how, and why.

The clues are crumbs and a rolling pin.

-Let's call athlete Glory. -No way! Singer Melody first.

I know I can't persuade you

to change your mind, so fine.

Hey, Word Detectives.

Sorry for eating and talking,

but I'm so... ♪ hungry!

But, Singer Melody, you were at the bakery.

-Why didn't you eat there? -Too busy.

Baker Graham sprained his ankle

and needed some help around the bakery,

so he convinced me to help him make

persuasion pies for his customers.

That's super nice of you.

I was happy to help my friend.

Plus, Baker Graham said we could have some pie

when we were done. But I didn't get any.

-Why not? -Because Athlete Glory

was helping Baker Graham around the bakery,

and every time she finished one test, he stopped making

pies with me to persuade her

to do something else for him.

And it happened again and again and again.

Did that bother you?

Bother me? No!

He needed us.

Now, is there anything else you want to know?

Because I really need to get another ♪ snack!

We're good. Thanks for your help.

Mm, because of his sprained ankle,

Baker Graham persuaded her to help.

And it took a long time.

Singer Melody said she wasn't bothered.

But it sounded like she was.

I wonder how Athlete Glory felt.

Hi, Word Detectives. Is there a word mystery

-I can help you with? -There sure is!

What do you know about persuasion pie?

Not enough. I was hoping to get some

for helping Baker Graham at the bakery today, but I never did.

What did you do at the bakery?

Anything he couldn't do with his sprained ankle.

I carried flour sacks to the back,

and then when I was done, he persuaded me to stack

some cans of frosting, and then

asked me to move some bushels of apples.

He just kept on persuading me to help him.

It just kept happening.

How did you feel about that?

Well, I was very happy to help.

But then I got hungry.

And when I get hungry, I can get hangry.

Hungry-angry.

But I managed to have a few

lemon tarts before that happened.

-A few? -Just a couple.

Or seven. But I left because I had to wash my hands.

They got really sticky.

Actually, they still are.

Anyway, talk later.

I'm not persuaded of anything yet.

Let's go over our case notes.

[Gabby] We know Baker Graham persuaded

Singer Melody to help him make pies for his customers.

[Sly] And he persuaded Athlete Glory

to help him out around the bakery.

[Gabby] Everything took a long time.

[Sly] Baker Graham needed a lot of help

because of his sprained ankle.

[Gabby] And both suspects got hungry.

[Sly] They wanted some persuasion pie,

but neither of them got any.

Athlete Glory did snack on lemon tarts, though.

These are the crumbs.

Singer Melody didn't get a snack.

She said she wasn't bothered,

but acted like she was.

Not getting snacks would bother me,

even if I wanted to help a friend.

Sly, I think we solved it.

Let's show everyone how this went down.

Now presenting the Word Mystery Animated Reenactment of...

The Case of the Persuasive Person.

Thank you both for helping me.

Working in the bakery is hard with a sprained ankle.

Can we have a snack before we start?

Or we could all have persuasion pie when we're done.

Come on. Let's get to work.

[Sly]A little later.

Just a few more pie crusts to make.

Snack time?

I'm just grabbing some lemon tarts.

Ooh, I'll have one too.

Please save your appetite for pie.

Persuasion pie is worth the wait.

[Sly]Even later than that.

I have to fix my bandage.

But we'll be able to eat some pie soon.

We just have a few more things to do.

He's so persuasive.

And my hands are so sticky.

I better go wash them.

I can't be persuaded to wait for a snack anymore.

♪ I'm hungry

Singer Melody is who took the persuasion pie recipe card.

Singer Melody?

When she was alone,

she grabbed the recipe card and left.

-That's how. -She didn't want

to be persuaded to keep waiting to eat.

-That's why. -I thought you wanted

-to help me. -I did.

But making pies was taking forever.

And I didn't even get a lemon tart.

They were delicious.

I'm sorry. I should have realized

that the pies were taking too long to make,

instead of persuading you

to keep helping me without a snack.

And I'm sorry I took your recipe card

and left you with a sprained ankle and no help.

I'll bring your recipe card right back now.

And I'll get you something to eat.
