without my backpack.

Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer.

The "Cassini" spacecraft took its own backpack

to the Saturn system.

It's called the "Huygens" probe.

The "Cassini" spacecraft was launched

in October of , and it's been orbiting Saturn

ever since it got there, taking all kinds

of amazing pictures of this beautiful ringed planet.

Shortly after "Cassini" reached the Saturn system,

it essentially dropped its backpack off,

releasing the "Huygens" probe, which then landed

on the surface of Titan, a frozen, icy moon

in the outer parts of the solar system.

The probe floated down to the surface of Titan,

and it gathered spectacular data

all the way to the surface.

The probe lasted about minutes

despite the harsh environment, which is way, way,

way colder than the coldest place on Earth.

Imagine what it would be like to live on the inside

of your freezer, cold and dark,

all the water frozen into ice.

Well, now imagine a world

that's even colder and almost as dark.

In addition to water, it's covered

with super-cold liquid methane, which is normally

a gas on Earth.

Titan is the only moon that's known

to have a dense atmosphere.

Some scientists believe that there's a possibility

that small, primitive forms of life may exist

on this wonderful moon.

So the next time you put on your backpack,

think about what you'd bring with you if you were

gonna go explore a new world.
