You guys?

I think there's another strange thing

happening to the neighborhood.

Look at all the houses.

What's going on?

- It's another Earth holiday, Jet--Christmas.

- Now, I remember that Halloween was confusing

to you and your parents, so basically,

Christmas is--oof!

- Oh, Christmas!

So that's what this is about.

Sunspot explained Christmas to me and Mom and Dad,

so we get it.

There's this big Earthie named "Santa"

who flies around in a kind of saucer.

But it has another name.

Like "slough" or "slee" or something.

And he's always yelling out,

"Hee, hee, hee!"

- Um, it's "h*, h*, h*."

- "Who, who, who." Right, got it.

And Christmas is about a lot of other stuff.

Cutting down trees, putting them up

in your house and painting them,

singing carols, writing letters to Santa,

hanging cookies above the fireplace,

ooh--leaving socks with milk out for Santa to eat.

Ah, milk and socks.

Hee, hee, hee!

- Uh, Jet? It's "h*, h*, h*."

And some of the things you listed are kind of wrong.

- And there are lots of Christmas traditions.

But that list doesn't have the most important thing of all--

the Spirit of Christmas.

- "Spirit of Christmas"?

What's that?

- [chattering]

both: Um...

- It's hard to explain.

The closest I can get is...

it's something you can feel.

- Right.

When you feel it, you'll know it.

Can you describe it?

But my favorite thing

is Santa flying the saucer.

And he's flying it full of presents through space,

and he comes down to Earth and lands on, uh...

so maybe you could tell him your flying saucer story.

Flying saucer Santa.

Wait, what's a "pageant"?

- It's a kind of show.

We do it every Christmas. - I love shows!

- And the show is always some kind of Christmas story.

With songs. - And costumes!

- And everyone in town comes to see it

just before Christmas.

And Santa? And saucers?

And songs?

What are we waiting for?

Let's go find Mr. Petersen

and tell him we have an idea

for the pageant!

and dance around.

Our story has to be about something.

- [laughs nervously] - Oh, uh...

I mean the South Pole.

Oh, ah, I mean the North Pole.

Reading a letter from Little Billy

in Boxwood Terrace.

- I'm listening... - Then, it's Christmas Eve.

And Santa puts all the toys in his flying saucer sleigh.

And he flies them around the Solar System,

and then, uh...

- 'Cause everyone knows Santa has to deliver presents

to all the good boys and girls

on all the planets in our Solar System.

- What a gigantic, super big job!

- There actually aren't any kids on the other planets,

but it's a made-up story, so wow--cool, right?

- Yes, good. This is good.

- Uh, so, they fly from Neptune

to Mercury and back,

and then at last, Santa gets to Earth,

where the weather is, uh...

- Socked in with a snowy blizzard.

Santa's saucer gets lost in the blizzard,

and there's no way to find all the houses

in Boxwood Terrace on time!

- A blizzard? Oh, no!

Then what happens? - I know!

It's so exciting, right?

Santa, stuck in the blizzard,

saucer full of toys,

trying to get them to Boxwood Terrace.

If only there were a way! - But there is a way!

Even though the blizzard is so thick

that you can barely see,

the scientists at the DSA have equipment

- Have you ever wanted to hear what someone's saying

It's not so easy to do, is it?

Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer.

Now, just imagine trying to hear from a spacecraft

that's all the way on the other side of the Solar System.

Well, that's exactly what we do here

with this giant, -meter antenna

at NASA's Deep Space Network

in Goldstone, California.

We use this to track our satellites

and to explore the universe.

Since it became operational in ,

this massive antenna's been tracking spacecraft

all over the Solar System.

From Mars, Jupiter, the asteroids--everywhere.

It's tracked dozens of spacecraft.

It weighs , tons.

That's as much as , minivans.

And it moves.

From the ground to the top of the antenna

is stories high.

Wow.

While this antenna is really special,

it can't do the job of talking with

all the spacecraft by itself.

Why?

Well, the Earth is rotating,

and it's constantly in motion.

So this antenna is actually one of three around the world

that scientists use to communicate with spacecraft

at all times.

The furthest one away, Voyager,

takes hours to send one message.

so you can see why they call it

"the deep space network."

So the next time you're on the playground,

just imagine if you had an ear this big,

you'd be able to hear everything.
