with your online Bortronian folk dance class.

- Well, now, let's see.

we can use chocolate, and instead of the goulash,
we can have cake! So, a chocolate cake?

So let's start throwing ingredients together,
and see what happens.

so it's easy to follow.
First, we have to get the ingredients.

- Wow, cool! We're in space!

- Well, um, well, let's see.
Aha! I see the problem!
Celery updated the control panel again,
so the button I was looking for
must be in a different place now.
- But the good news is, you know all the other buttons
and levers on this control panel thingy.
Right, Mr. Carrot?
- Uh, y-y-yeah.
[chuckles] Nothing to worry about.
[gulps]
[panel beeps]
[spaceship blasts]
- Um, Earth is that way, Mr. Carrot.
I think we're going in the wrong direction.
Let's find out why.
- Absolutely. First, I'll stop the saucer
so we can take a look at this new panel.
[panel beeps]
[brakes screeching]
- Well, that was easy.
- Actually, it's kind of complicated.
I'm just not that familiar with this new control panel!
But let's give it a try!
I think this button will move us forward.
[panel beeps]
[spaceship whirring] - Nope.
We're going backwards!
- Uhh, right! Okay, I was wrong.
But that red button will stop us!
[panel beeps]
- And stop!
[brakes screeching] - [chuckles]
Ooh, let's try this button!
- Whee!
- Ugh, I bet this orange thingy will help.
[panel beeps]
[spaceship whirring] - Ahhh!
- Okay, okay, let's not push
any more buttons right now.
I am getting dizzy!
- Okay, how about turning this dial?
Maybe it'll help.
[panel beeps] - Oh-h*-h*, yes!
[funky music plays]
- [grunting] [Mindy giggling]
- This would be the best ride at a carnival,
if we weren't stuck in the middle of space.
- Yeah, good point.

[whirring, bird chirps, bongo drum flourish]
We need to actually make this saucer fly us home.
Okay, Carrot, focus! Try to think like Celery.
Ah, Celery would ask Face !
Uh, Face, hello?
- Face is on vacation right now.

Huh, I feel like I've seen this before somewhere.
Hmm. - Wait, it's the control panel!
See, the buttons on the diagram
look like the buttons on the panel?
- Oh, and look, it says on the bottom here that page two
explains what the shapes are and what they do.
Then we'll know how to fly the saucer!

Ugh, we'll figure this out!

[spaceship whirring]
- Ah, Enceladus, little frozen moon of Saturn!
Yeah, great idea to come here, Mindy!
Hey, 'Celly, good to see you!
It's your old pal, Carrot!
Glad you're still covered with ice and snow!
- Yep, there's plenty of excellent snow here,
Mr. Carrot, just sh**ting out into space!
- All right, let me just, uh, activate
our new Bortronian robotic arm.
Care to help me, Mindy?
[panel beeps]
[arm wobbles]
both: Yes!
[upbeat music]
[spaceship whirring and warbling]
- All right, Mr. Carrot!
[giggles] We have your snow!
Ready to fly back to Earth?
- You betcha! And I may not even need
that amazing control panel diagram.
- Or you may.
I'd keep it handy. Next stop, Earth!
[spaceship whirring]
[upbeat, whimsical music]
Okay, Mr. Carrot, let's bake!

[chair whirring]
- [giggling]
What a cool-some science fair!
I got this telescope hat!
How was it for you?
Kind of a do-nothing day here, huh?
- Oh, yes, but we actually did bake something.
- I bet it was nice to just stay here and bake.
[both laughing]
- It sure was nice and relaxing.
[timer buzzes, Jet gasps]

Now, that was a good cake!
And I could definitely taste the Saturn snow.

- Ah, you're right, Sunspot, it was worth
the unplanned trip to outer space.

One of the first things you might notice
when you look at the night sky
is our one and only moon.
Some of the planets in our solar system
have lots of moons and others have none at all.
I think my favorite moon in our solar system
just might be Jupiter's moon Io.
I've got my handy map of the solar system
that we can use to get there.
First we need to find where we're starting from.
That's planet Earth.
The Sun's in the middle of the map,
and planet Earth is the third planet out.
Jupiter's the fifth planet from the Sun.
We're starting at Earth, which is the third planet.
Mars is four. Jupiter is five.
To get to Jupiter, we need to go from Earth,
past Mars, and through the asteroid belt.
Let's go.
Now we're passing Mars
with its two tiny moons.
But our map says we've got to keep going
past the asteroid belt.
We've made it Jupiter. Look at all these moons!
Jupiter has more than .
Let's zoom in on our map so we can find Io.
It's really close to Jupiter.
Let's go take a look.
Io's covered with volcanoes
and hot, molten rock.
Looking at it reminds me
of one of my favorite foods, pizza!
So the next time you want pizza,
just remember, maps can help you find things
whether it's a good pizza place
or a moon that looks like a pizza.
Mmm.

No, a planet with a moon?
There are so many places in space, I can't pick!
- It's hard to know where to start.
I used to feel that way too, Mindy.
- You did? What did you do?
- I talked to my mom! [gasps]
And that's what we're gonna do right now!

- I used to feel that way about space
when I was your age too!
- You did? - Sure.
I bet all space scientists and explorers
have felt that way.
- What did you do when you didn't know
where to look first in space?
- I'll show you!

after lots of work, she built her own spaceship!"

- [squeaking]

- "Astrid, the little girl who lived next door,
wanted to come along."
- Astrid needs a space name

- "So her next-door neighbor Astrid
became Space Cadet Astrid!"

- Wait a minute, that's just like our countdown!
- [giggles] "The spaceship
"was about to take off, when they heard
a sound from outside!"
[dog barks]
"Commander Cressida and Space Cadet Astrid
"stopped their countdown.
'Wait, stop the countdown!' said Commander Cressida."
[dog panting, barks]
- Look at that cute lost dog!
He wants to go with them! [dog barks]
- "'Aww, what's your name, doggy?'"
[dog barks, slurps]
- What happened next?
- "Commander Cressida started to take off
in her spaceship, headed for"...
- Where? Where are they headed for?
[drumroll]
- I--I don't know!
Some pages must have fallen out!
We're missing the whole end of the story!
- [squeals dramatically]
- [gasps] Oh, no!
We'll never know what happens to Commander Cressida!
- We can't give up! - But what can we do?
- Hmm, we don't have the pages,
but we do have pencils and paper
and our own imaginations!
- You mean we're gonna draw and make up our own story?
- [squealing] - Why not?
Look, Sunspot's drawing superfast!
[crayons scratching, whooshing]
- [giggles]
Let's do it!

[Sunspot grunts, paper rustling]
- So let's see.

- I don't know.

- [chirps]

- That would be great!
But where? - [squeaks]

What about Jupiter?
- Whoa!
You can see planet Jupiter from Earth
without a telescope?
- Sure can. - Where is it?
- It's easy to see after the Sun goes down.
After the Moon and Venus,
it's the next brightest thing in the night sky!
- Ooh, I wish it were nighttime right now!
- Well, I know one way we could see Jupiter right now.
What if we go up to space and look at Jupiter up close?
- Yeah, and then come back to the tree house
and see it again tonight?
[engine revving, horn honks]
[both gasping]
- Did somebody say go up to space
and see Jupiter up close?
[girls giggling]
- Wow! Bortronian parents have amazing hearing.
- Hmm, all parents do, kiddo.

Are we landing soon?
- Well, Jupiter is a planet made out of gases,
so we can't land on it.
- Sure is a pretty color, though.
Look! It has a red spot on it!
Is that a freckle?
- Actually, that spot is a giant storm
that's even bigger than the whole Earth!
- Really? I need a picture.
[shutter snaps] - [squeaks]
- What's that next to Jupiter?
- Oh, that's Io,
one of Jupiter's largest moons.
- Why does it kind of look like a cheese pizza?
- Two words: Volcanoes and lava.
- There are volcanoes on Io?
Maybe that's an adventure for Commander Cressida to explore.
- Perfect! Commander Cressida visits Io,
the pizza moon of Jupiter!
- Yay! We have an ending!
- Celery, can we hurry back home and get our pencils
to finish the story?
- Heading for home. Hold on, girls!

And this, this is "Endeavour"!
[rocket blasting]
"Endeavour" is one of five space shuttles
that were used for almost years
to take astronauts into space.
But how does a thing weighing , pounds
get off the ground?
- That's a big problem!
It takes a lot of energy and a lot of force--
it's called thrust--
about million pounds of force
that's trying to lift--
- million pounds? - Yeah.
- Wow, that's a lot of force. - And a lot of what
you're lifting is fuel. - How much fuel
do the space shuttle engines use?
- Those three engines on the shuttle
will drain an average-sized swimming pool,
like at your house, in about seconds.
- How many astronauts could go up on a space shuttle?
- Usually, they had crews of about seven.
♪ ♪
Most of the shuttle is designed for payload.
That's stuff you want to take up.
- How long does it take to get the space shuttle into orbit?
- From the time the shuttle launches
and leaves the ground,
/ minutes later, it's in orbit.
- So it sounds like a space shuttle
is kind of like an airplane that goes into space,
except it takes off like a rocket...
- That's right.
- And it lands like an airplane.
- It comes back like a glider,
which means it's an airplane that has no engines.
- Wow.
- Because once all of the fuel is used
through those main engines, they throw the fuel tank away.
- So you're just gliding back to Earth.
- You glide back and you have
one chance to make an appropriate landing.
- So the next time you see a big airplane,
just remember, its engines
are nowhere near as powerful as the space shuttle's.
