- ♪ I'm a space tripper and a galaxy crosser ♪

♪ My parents brought me here in a flying saucer ♪

[children chattering] - Got your shadow! [laughs]

[laughing] - Hoo! [pants]

- [panting]

Whoa! - [laughs]

[both laughing]

[boing] - [grunts]

[all laughing]

- Whoa!

[all talking and laughing at once]

- Shadow!

- Ha! Got your shadow, Jet.

- Hey, wait. My shadow disappeared.

- Mine did too. - Mine too.

You win. Now give us our shadows back.

- [squeaking]

- [laughs] I didn't take anyone's shadow.

- You're right. Yours is gone too.

Where did they go? - Look up.

- Oh, wow. The Sun disappeared too.

Who took the Sun? - That's what I meant.

It's behind those clouds.

- [groans] I wish we could tell those clouds

to move out of the way.

- [squeaking]

[playful music]

♪ ♪

- Hey! Our shadows are back.

- Thanks, Sunspot. - Actually,

Sunspot didn't do that.

- Game on! [all gasp]

♪ ♪

- [exhales] That's not how science works, you know.

- Maybe not, but that's how shadow tag works.

You're it! [laughs]

[boing]

- [gasps]

[gasps] - [squeaks happily]

- Aww, there goes the Sun again--

and our shadows.

How are we going to play if the Sun won't stay out?

- Guess we'll just have to wait.

- [groans]

Waiting is my most un-favorite thing.

- I have some chalk.

- I know a game we could play.

- Ooh, I love toc-toe-tic.

- It's tic-tac-toe, Jet.

- Oh...th-that game too.

- I'll play the winner.

- Let's see how many games

we can play before the Sun comes back.

♪ ♪

[all sighing]

- [chirps] - Uh...you win again, Sunspot.

Another game? - Actually, we're out of chalk.

- And room to draw.

- And the Sun still isn't out.

- We may have to wait until

the end of the day for it. - [squeaks]

- But the end of the day means

that we won't have sunlight anymore,

and it's a lot harder

to play shadow tag in the moonlight.

- Huh...maybe Face can help us figure out what to do.

- Hey, everyone!

I'm learning comedy.

From now on, you can call me...Funny Face.

[laughs] Want to hear a joke?

- Uh, first, we were wondering--

- Knock, knock.

- Who's there? - It's me, Face.

- Face who?

- No, it is I, Face.

I am the one who was knocking.

[laughing]

Uh...why do you not laugh at this humor?

[boys chuckle softly]

- [speaking gibberish]

all: Who's there?

- [speaking gibberish]

[children laughing]

- Oh, now you laugh.

How come Sunspot always gets to be the funny one?

- [squeaks]

[imitates honking horn]

- [laughs]

That is pretty funny.

So what can I do for you kids?

- We were wondering...

- Why can't the Sun just stay out

and shine all day?

- And can you tell us when

the Sun's supposed to come out again

so we can finish our shadow tag game?

- Right. We've got shadows to chase.

- Mm-hmm.

This weather report says

the Sun just might come out later.

- Later?

But we wanna play shadow tag now.

- Oh, so you don't want to wait to see the Sun?

What if I were to tell you that there's a planet out there

that has not one, not two,

but three suns in its solar system?

- Wow, three suns? [laughs] No waiting!

- Would we each have three shadows?

- Quite possibly. - That would be amazing!

- But there's only one sun.

That's why it's called "the Sun."

- Yeah, are you sure you're right about this, Face?

- Mm-hmm. Yes, it's a fact.

This planet with three suns hasn't been explored yet,

but scientists have named it Proxima B.

children: Proxima B?

- Sounds like something out of

a Commander Cressida comic book.

- Ooh, maybe we should go see it for ourselves.

- [squeaking]

- [chuckles] Sunscreen. Good job, Sunspot.

We're gonna need a lot of this.

Three times as much. [horn honks]

- Whoo-hoo! Word on the street is

that you kids want to go up

and see the planet with three suns!

- That's right. How did you know?

Magic?

- [laughs] Nope.

I was doing some gardening over there

and you kids were talking loudly.

Hop in!

- Uh, you guys can go.

Sunspot and I want to stay here and figure out how

to play shadow games without the sun.

- Well, if they're staying... - You're coming, Sean.

- [sighs] Don't worry, Mindy.

We'll come back before the end of the day,

in case the Sun comes out--whoa!

Um, exactly how far is this planet?

- Oh, it's far. It's farther than the Sun.

- Huh...I see. Will there be a bathroom stop?

- ♪ Five, four, three-two-one ♪

♪ Doors are shut, engines on ♪

♪ Everybody in their place? ♪

♪ Let's go into outer space ♪ - ♪ Ready, jet, go! ♪

[Sean screaming]

- Sun, sun, sun, here we come!

- Hoo-hoo! Hang on, kids.

We're about to leave your solar system.

- Bathroom stop now. Bathroom stop now!

[engines whirring]

- Here's the question.

How can we make shadows without the Sun?

- [squeaks] - [giggles] You have an idea?

- [squeaks excitedly]

- Oh! You have a light bulb.

So we can use light to make shadows.

Great idea, Sunspot.

I have some flashlights, and they have bulbs in them.

[engines whirring]

- Ooh, I think we found the place

to play shadow tag, kids.

Take a look out the window. What do you see?

- Look, it's the planet with three suns!

[soft, mystical music]

♪ ♪

- [chuckles] Cool!

I wonder what it would be like to live there.

- Knock, knock.

- Uh, who's there?

- It's me, Face, again.

Don't you remember from before?

- Oh, yeah. Uh, good one, Face.

[laughs forcedly]

- [laughs, clears throat] Enough humor.

Let's talk about this planet.

It's a little different from Earth up here.

- Yeah, you can watch the sunset

three times a day.

- Well, no.

Even with three suns,

you might not see a sunrise

or a sunset here.

- No sunrise or sunset? How could that be?

- This planet may face its nearest star

at all times, so it could look like

the sun never rises or sets.

[shimmering chimes]

[record scratch] - [sighs]

No thanks.

I'd miss the sunsets and the sunrises on Earth.

- Me too.

Is anything else different here?

- How about this?

On Proxima B,

a year is only days.

That's how long it takes for this planet

to orbit its suns.

- An Earth year is days.

Can you imagine a whole year going by

in days?

- So my birthday would come every days?

Cool!

[shimmering chimes]

I love birthdays.

Oh, boy, it's my birthday again.

Another birthday?

Another birthday?

Another birthday...

- What's wrong, Sydney?

- [groaning] Uh... I don't think I'm going to

want to see any cupcakes for a long time.

- At least on a planet with three suns

we could play shadow tag all day!

Every day is "Sun's Day."

- Sounds great, but guess what?

This planet's main sun is a red dwarf star.

It's much dimmer than Earth's yellow Sun.

These three suns put together don't give off as much light

as our Sun on Earth.

- What? Really?

[shimmering chimes]

- You can't catch me! - [laughs]

- Come on, Jet. - W-wait!

- Come get us, Jet! - Come back!

[stammering dizzily]

[mysterious music]

I can't see your shadow.

I'll never catch your shadows if I can't see them!

I'll be "it" [echoing] forever!

Oh. [chuckles] Whew.

I think I'd miss Earth's bright yellow Sun.

It makes the best shadows.

- Hey, guys.

Remember we promised Mindy we'd get back

to play with her by the end of the day?

- Yeah, let's go back. Mindy's waiting.

- Yes! - Oh, sure.

But first, everyone say "sunshine"!

all: Sunshine! [camera shutter clicks]

[engines whirring]

[tires squealing]

[together] Hi, Mindy! - Hi!

Did you find the planet with three suns?

- We sure did, Mindy, but we like Earth better.

- Wow, it has three suns,

but it doesn't look as bright as Earth's Sun.

- That's true.

You wouldn't want to play shadow tag there.

- Looks like the Sun hasn't been out much today.

- It's okay.

Sunspot and I found another way to play with shadows.

Come on!

- Uh, now it's dark.

What are we supposed to see, Mindy?

- Just watch. [button clicks]

- What a great rabbit, Mindy. - [giggles]

No, no. That was Sunspot.

This is a rabbit.

[low growling]

- Cool. Let me try.

- Uh, did someone turn on the lights in here?

- Hey, look out the window!

- Sunlight's coming in!

- The Sun's out! Finally.

Let's go play.

[all laughing, Sunspot squeaking]

- Help! Sunspot's gonna get me!

- [squeaking] - Everyone after Sunspot!

[upbeat music]

- [squeals]

- Gotcha, Sunspot!

Can't hide with those ears. - [squeaks]

all: [laughing] Sunspot.

- Knock, knock. - Who's there?

- It's-- - We know it's you, Funny Face.

Do you have another riddle for us?

- I'm just checking to see

how you liked the planet with three suns.

- It was a neat place to visit, but--

- Boy, are we glad to be back.

- We think our Sun

is the best sun in the universe.

- It makes the best shadows.

And you know what else? - What?

- Tag!

You're it, Face!

[all laughing] - What?

N-no fair! I don't have legs.

Very funny.

So now you're the comedians? [laughs]

- And now here's my friend astronomer Amy Mainzer!

- Thanks, Jet.

Magnets are really useful.

You can use them to stick drawings to the fridge.

Even a regular magnet, like this little one here,

can do some pretty amazing stuff.

Magnets stick really well to certain kinds of metal,

like these paperclips here.

Let's try it.

Magnets can work even if

they're not directly touching the paperclips.

[rattles]

But they definitely don't stick to everything.

If you have two of these bar-shaped magnets,

you might notice something funny happens

if you put the red and blue ends next to each other.

Whoa. Look at that.

If you put the red and the blue ends of the magnet together,

they pull on each other.

I guess opposites really do attract.

But now let's try an experiment.

Let's see what happens if we put the two red ends together.

When you put the two red ends together,

they push each other apart.

Magnets can push or pull on each other

even if they aren't directly touching.

So the next time you want to hang up

a drawing on your fridge...

Stick with magnets.

[drum roll]

[cymbals crash]

- The next act in my show

of super cool and amazing things is...

I will pull a rabbit--

well, a rabbit-like animal--

out of this simple, regular old box.

[pop] - [squeaks]

[fanfare]

For my next and final act,

I will hold some paperclips in the air...

and they'll stay together.

- [gasps] Really? But how?

- Ta-da! all: Wow!

- I can't believe what my eye parts just saw.

Whoa. Another Earthie mystery.

- How on your planet Earth did you possibly do that?

- It's not a mystery.

I was holding a magnet in my hand.

- Ah, cool.

- Is that all you can do with magnets, Sean?

- [splutters] All he can do?

That was amazing!

This "ma-a-gnet" thing

is one of the most incredible Earth items I have ever seen.

- Magnets are amazing, and they're in all our houses.

Like, we use them to hold up papers on a refrigerator.

- [chuckling] Oh! So that's what's holding up

all those pictures of Jet on our refrigerator.

[quirky tune]

♪ ♪

- Yeah, I have refrigerator magnets too.

- Well, keep me posted if you find out anything new

about these mystery magnet thingies, kids.

I'll be in the kitchen. I'm cooking a big dinner.

all: Bye!

- Sean, could I do your trick with my refrigerator magnets?

- Maybe.

I think a bigger and stronger magnet,

like mine, would help.

- Okay. Can I use yours then?

- Got some questions, Sean-zo.

- So...ready to go explore what a magnet can do?

- Yeah, let's go to Jet's backyard.

- Look! My magnet works on this.

[energy whirring] - [squeaks]

- Huh! Mine too! - [squeaks]

- And also on this fork.

- [grunting]

- Look!

I can pull Jet 's arm towards my magnet.

- Um, I think mine's broken.

- [squeaking] - It doesn't work on this ball.

- Huh.

Hmm.

I guess mine's broken too.

- They're not broken.

I guess they only work on certain things.

Hey, I have an idea.

Let's make one pile of things our magnet can pick up

and one pile of things they can't.

Mindy and Sean: Yeah!

- Okay, these things are magnetic,

and they're all kind of, uh... shiny.

- And these things

our magnets don't clamp onto aren't shiny:

twigs, this toy, a hat.

- Or Sunspot. [giggles]

- [chatters] - Ahh...so I wonder

what the thing has to be made out of...

- So a magnet can pick it up?

- Huh...I'm not sure.

But for sure not wood.

- Or whatever Sunspot is made out of.

- [squeals]

- True.

So do these magnets work everywhere on your planet,

or just in your yards?

Can we test our magnets around the neighborhood?

all: Yes! - Whoo-hoo!

[laughs] - Yeah, whoo!

Jet and Mindy: [chanting] Magnets, magnets, magnet!

- Wow.

Who knew they'd love magnets so much?

- Magnets really pull towards Beep.

[Beep whirs]

- And magnets do not pull towards the treehouse's wood.

- [snoring]

- Oh, oh, oh!

- [gasps] Whoa.

Cody's magnetic! Cool.

- No--actually, it's just his collar.

- Yup, it's his collar.

- Um, problem with Cody's collar?

- Oh, we just noticed

that our magnets seem to like his collar.

Mitchell, are you wearing

a magnet-friendly jacket?

- I certainly am not.

But I am carrying my lucky magnet,

like I always do.

And now I must be going.

I'm working on a very important case.

Top secret.

Come on, Cody. Bring the files.

- [whines] - Come on, Cody.

[energy whirring, Cody grunting]

[energy whirring] - Hey!

Look at that, Sydney.

[grunting] My magnet is clamping

right onto yours. [grunts]

- [grunting] Yeah,

and it's kind of hard to pull them apart.

- [gasps] Cool! Let's try ours.

- Uh, wha...

Ours are being somehow pushed apart.

- [squeaks] - Whoa.

I guess the other end of the magnet

actually pushes it away.

- [laughs] That is so wacky.

What could possibly happen next?

[shoes tapping] - [squeaking]

- Okay, Sunspot tap-dancing is next.

all: Go, Sunspot, go!

- [squeaks]

[chatters] Oh, oh, oh!

- Huh. I think he's stuck.

- Guess Sunspot's shoes have magnets on them too.

- [chatters]

- Ah, of course. He says those are

magnetic Bortronian tap-dancing shoes.

- [squeaks]

[squeaks dizzily]

[fanfare and applause] - Wow.

So the stop sign post is made out of the same stuff

that whatever Cody's collar is made of?

- So far, they're all made out of metal.

So magnets only stick to metal?

- Right, but I remember that

my magnet also stuck to a rock in my collection.

- A rock?

Is a rock made out of

the same stuff?

- Okay.

Nope, nope...eh, nope.

Aha!

Look! My magnet sticks to this one.

[all gasp]

[together] Cool.

- Hmm, so maybe there's metal in this rock.

- So are magnets pulled towards this rock

and the stop sign and Cody's collar and Beep?

[together] Right! - And they're all made out of

the same thing?

- Makes sense, but I'm not sure.

- Well, it looks like a magnet is usually

made out of special kinds of metal.

[dinging]

- Also, it says here

that magnets work through things.

- Really? Like what things?

- Like this paper.

- Whoa-h*-h*-h*.

Now the magnets are clamped together

through Earth paper?

But...how?

[together] The power of magnets!

- Well, there is no way

that I could ever be amazed again,

because now I have truly seen everything...ever!

- Or has he?

I bet we could show him some new things

we've learned about magnets.

- As do I,

the one and only... Sean-zo!

What do you say we put on a little magnet magic show...

for Carrot?

- Oh, I love it!

- Looks like you're both ready.

- [squeaks] [concertina wavering]

- And Sunspot's ready too.

- [humming]

[gasps, stammers]

that not only rocks but also rolls?

- No, silly. I'm doing the lights!

- [laughing] Oh!

Oh...oh, but now I'm also hearing music...

[quirky music playing] - [clears throat]

Attention, everyone named Carrot!

- Oh! I fall into that distinct category.

- Oh, good. Uh, please

put your hands together

for the one and only...

Sean-zo!

- I am the great Sean-zo, and today,

we will dazzle and amaze you

with the power of...the magnet.

- Whoo-hoo! [laughs excitedly]

An unexpected show

that will be entertaining and informative.

[chuckles] Pinch me.

[ping] Oh, ow.

I didn't mean that literally, Sunspot.

- Let the show begin!

- Behold: the floating fork and spoon!

- [gasping] Wow.

- Behold again:

rocks that rise up by themselves!

- [squeals]

Am I seeing what I think I'm seeing

with my eye parts? - [chuckles]

- Indeed you are.

- What? How? Really?

[panting, gasping]

Only on planet Earth do metal bowls move

by themselves in your kitchen!

- Booyah! Magnets.

- Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

Yes!

Wait...

how did you really do all those tricks?

Was that some kind of Earth magic thingie? Eh?

[together] Nope. The power of magnets!

- [gasps] - It's true!

And did you know that magnets

are made of things that come from the Earth?

- And even some rocks are magnetic.

- And that really strong magnets

can help Sunspot walk upside down?

Look! - [squeaks]

- [gasps] O...kay.

Now I've seen everything.

[jazzy music]

[Cody barking]

- There's something extremely strange

about that pet. [sighs]

Why can't you do tricks like that, Cody?

Oh, well. Come this way, Cody.

[squirrel chattering, Cody barking]

- Whoa! Whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa!

- [barking] - Okay, fine.

We'll go your way.

[Sunspot squeaking]

- Whoa, all that spinning's making me really dizzy.

If you're gonna spin like that, make sure you do it

in a safe, open space.

Of course, another name for spinning is rotating.

Hi, I'm astronomer Amy Mainzer.

And today, I'm playing the part of the Earth.

The Earth makes a lot of complicated motions

as it speeds through space.

First, it's going around the Sun once a year.

That's its orbit.

And in addition to orbiting, it's also spinning.

Every hours,

the Earth spins around one time,

and that's what gives us night and day.

In the morning, we see the Sun come up,

and it appears to travel across the sky

during the day before it sets.

Of course, the Sun's not really moving.

It's just the Earth is rotating.

You can imagine you're standing here

on the surface of the Earth,

and as the Earth turns,

the Sun is facing away from us and toward us.

That's what gives us day and night.

Not all planets rotate at the same speed.

Some spin fast and others are slow.

Some even spin in the opposite direction

from the Earth. Venus takes days

to rotate around once. That means night would last

a really long time.

Even though Jupiter is the biggest planet

in our solar system, it's spinning the fastest.

It only takes it about ten hours

to spin around once.

It's rotating so fast

that it's actually being squished a little bit,

and it's no longer completely round.

So the next time you're rotating

with your friends and someone tells you

it's time to come in and go to bed,

just tell them you're on Venus time.
