Matthew: How do you like it?

Anne: It's lovely.

Anne: Doesn't this picture remind you of Diana?

Matthew: Well now, I don't know about that.

Anne: Thank you, Matthew.

Marilla: Have you both forgotten it's time for tea?

Anne: I'm sorry, Marilla.

Anne: The picture Diana gave me is just so beautiful.

Marilla: I've already heard all about it.

Anne: Oh, I've been invited to a Sunday school picnic.

Marilla: Have you now?

Anne: Oh, I've never been to a picnic.

Anne: Please can I go, Marilla?

Marilla: It's not likely I'd refuse to let you go when all the other little girls are going.

Anne: But... But Diana says that everybody must take a basket of things to eat.

Marilla: Of course I'll bake you a basket.

Anne: Oh, you dear good Marilla!

Marilla: Here now. Not so close.

Marilla: Never mind your kissing nonsense.

Chapter

Looking Forward to ThingsIs Half the Pleasure of Them

Anne: Is something the matter, Marilla?

Marilla: Did you see my amethyst brooch I wear to church? I can't find it anywhere.

Marilla: I always put it back in its place when I'm done with it.

Anne: That perfectly elegant brooch like the souls of violets?

Anne: I saw it on yourpincushion on the bureau.

Anne: I took it up and I pinned it on my breast just to see how it would look.

Marilla: You had no business to do anything of the sort.

Marilla: Now, where did you put the brooch?

Anne: Oh, I put it back on the bureau.

Anne: I didn't think about its being wrong.

Anne: But one good thing about me is, I never do the same naughty thing twice.

Marilla: I'll go and have another look.

Anne: Isn't it there?

Marilla: Tell me the truth at once.

Marilla: Did you take it out and lose it?

Anne: I never did and that is the truth, if I was to be led to the block for it,

Anne: although I'm not very certain what a block is.

Anne: So there!

Marilla: Nonsense!

Marilla: I believe you are telling me a falsehood!

Marilla: Go to your room and stay there until you are ready to confess!

Anne: Should I take the peas?

Marilla: No. Do as I bid you!

Matthew: Mother gave you that brooch, I know.

Marilla: I don't suppose she meant to steal it or anything like that.

Marilla: I suppose she has lost it and is afraid to own up for fear she'll be punished.

Marilla: It's a dreadful thing to think she tells falsehoods.

Marilla: I declare I feel worse about that than about the brooch.

Matthew: How long are you going to make her stay in her room?

Marilla: Until she confesses!

Matthew: Well now, you have the bringing up of her.

Marilla: I can't very well go to Rachel about this.

Marilla: What am I to do?

Marilla: You haven't eaten a bite.

Anne: I did not take your brooch.

Anne: The picnic is tomorrow!

Anne: You won't keep me from going to that, will you?

Marilla: You'll not go to picnics nor anywhere else until you've confessed!

Anne: Oh, Marilla!

Anne: Marilla, I'm ready to confess!

Anne: I took the amethyst brooch!

Marilla: Let me hear what you have to say then.

Anne: I wanted to wear it out among the birches

Anne: and play I was the Lady Cordelia Fitzgerald.

Anne: I thought I could put it back before you came home.

Anne: Only...

Marilla: Only what?

Anne: I went all the way around by the road to lengthen out the time.

Anne: On the bridge across the Lake of Shining Waters,

Anne: I took the brooch off to have another look at it.

Anne: And then it just slipped through my fingers

Anne: and sank forevermore beneath the Lake of Shining Waters.

Anne: And that's the best I can do at confessing, Marilla.

Marilla: Anne, this is terrible!

Marilla: You are the very wickedest girl I ever heard of.

Anne: Yes, I suppose I am.

Anne: Won't you please punish me right off?

Anne: I'd like to go to the picnic with nothing on my mind.

Marilla: Picnic, indeed!

Marilla: You'll go to no picnic today, Anne Shirley.

Marilla: That shall be your punishment.

Anne: Not go to the picnic! But you promised me I might!

Anne: Oh, Marilla, I must go to the picnic! That was why I confessed!

Anne: Today is to be a red-letter day—the first time I have ice cream!

Anne: For anything you know I may never have a chance to taste ice cream again!

Anne: Please, Marilla!

Marilla: You are not going to the picnic and that's final.

flashback,Rachel: Did anybody ever see such a temper!

flashback,Rachel: I'm not vexed. I'm too sorry for you to leave any room for anger.

Marilla: I've put my hand to the plough and I won't look back.

Marilla: Come down to your dinner, Anne!

Anne: I don't want any dinner!

Anne: I couldn't eat anything! My heart is broken!

Anne: You'll feel remorse of conscience someday, I expect,

Anne: but I forgive you.

Anne: Remember when the time comes that I forgive you.

Anne: But please don't ask me to eat anything,

Anne: especially anything so unromantic as boiled pork and greens!

Matthew: This is good.

Marilla: For "unromantic boiled pork and greens," I suppose.

Matthew: Well now, she shouldn't have told stories, but she's such a little thing.

Marilla: I'm amazed at you. I think I've let her off entirely too easy.

Matthew: But you know, she's never had any bringing up.

Marilla: Well, she's having it now.

Marilla: What a lot of sewing to do.

Marilla: Oh yes,

Marilla: I must mend that rent in my shawl.

Marilla: What, another tear?

Marilla: What does this mean?

Marilla: It must have happened when...

Marilla: Anne Shirley!

Marilla: I've just found my brooch hanging to my black lace shawl!

Marilla: Now I want to know what that rigmarole you told me this morning meant!

Anne: Why, you said you'd keep me here until I confessed.

Anne: So I thought out a confession and made it as interesting as I could.

Anne: And I rehearsed it all last night.

Anne: But you wouldn't let me go to the picnic after all, so all my trouble was wasted.

Marilla: Anne, you do beat all!

Marilla: But I was wrong.

Marilla: I shouldn't have doubted your word.

Marilla: Of course, it wasn't right for you to confess to a thing you hadn't done.

Marilla: But I drove you to it.

Marilla: So if you'll forgive me,

Marilla: Anne, I'll forgive you.

Anne: Why, Marilla, of course I forgive you.

Marilla: And now get yourselfready for the picnic.

Anne: Oh, Marilla, isn't it too late?

Marilla: They won't be more than well gathered yet.

Marilla: Now put this on.

Marilla: Oh, but wash your face and comb your hair first!

Marilla: Matthew! Drive Anne down!

Matthew: Of course. I'll hitch up the sorrel.

Diana: Anne! Come here!

Anne: Diana!

Diana: Anne!

Diana: How I've waited for you.

Diana: This is Anne Shirley, my dearest friend.

Anne: Her dearest friend!

Diana: It's a pleasure to meet you!

Ruby; Jane; Mary; Josie: The pleasure's ours!

Anne: Picnicking with everybody

Anne: was so much lovelierthan ever I imagined!

Anne: On the Lake of Shining Waters...

Anne: Watch out!

Anne: one girl nearly fell overboard.

Anne: And we had the ice cream!

Anne: Words fail me to describe that ice cream!

Anne: I assure you it was sublime.

Marilla: I assure you that you're blowing it out of proportion.

Anne: Oh, Matthew, Marilla, I've had a perfectly scrumptious time!

Anne: Scrumptious is a new wordI learned today.

Anne: I heard Mary Bell use it.

Marilla: What a day that was.

Marilla: Anne's "confession" was all a falsehood.

Marilla: I'm willing to own up that I made a mistake.

Marilla: And there's one thing certain.

Marilla: No house will ever be dull that she's in.

Matthew: Yes, and aren't you glad, Marilla?

Marilla: Remember, Anne,

Marilla: you're to keep your mouth shut at school.

Anne: I will!

Marilla: And listen to your teacher.

Anne: I know, Marilla.

Anne: Do my clothes look funny?

Marilla: No, they do not.

Anne: Well then, I'll be on my way!

Marilla: Oh, your lunch!

Matthew: I'll have your study desk ready by the time you get home, Anne.

Anne: Thank you, Matthew.

Anne: Goodbye, then.

Marilla: I only hope she gets onwith the other children.

Anne: Good morning, Lover's Lane.

Anne: A wonderfully romantic name, if I do say so myself.

Diana: Anne!

Anne: Good morning, Diana!

Diana: Good morning.

Diana: How do you feel about your first day of school?

Anne: Simply splendid!

Anne: But it's splendider still to have such a lovely way to go to school by!

Diana: The Violet Vale! Millions of them bloom there in spring!

Diana: The Birch Path! Have you ever seen such beautiful shafts of light?

Diana: The school is just past these spruces.

Diana: Good morning, Jane!

Jane: Will you listen to this?

Jane: Gertie Pye actually went and put her milk bottle in my place in the brook yesterday.

Jane: Did you ever?

Diana: Good morning, Ruby.

Ruby: Mr. Phillips wrote something on Prissy Andrews's slate,

Ruby: and when Prissy read it, she blushed as red as a beet.

Ruby: Why do you think that was?

Anne: I can't imagine.

Diana: Anne, look!

Diana: That's the Avonlea school there.

Anne: You're all on the fifth book, aren't you?

Anne: I'm only on the fourth—terribly far behind.

Diana: You'll catch up soon.

Student: The master's here.

Phillips: Good morning.

Students: Good morning, Mr. Phillips.

Phillips: We'll spend our first hour on geography.

Phillips: Look at this map of Prince Edward Island and answer...

italicsAnne: Oh, you can see the Lake of Shining Waters from here, too.

Phillips: Anne Shirley, our newest scholar!

Phillips: Come up to the map!

Phillips: Point to Avonlea Village.

Anne: I've never seen a map before.

Diana; Jane: Go on, Anne!

Phillips: Don't you know where it is?

Anne: "Caribou"?

Anne: I took a boat from Caribou to... Charlottetown!

Anne: And the train from thereto... Bright River!

Anne: Then we followed Avonlea main road straight north to...

Anne: Avonlea Village is right here.

Phillips: You're correct.

Anne: "The year's at the spring,And day's at the morn;"

Anne: "Morning's at seven;The hill-side's dew-pearled;"

Anne: "The lark's on the wing;"

Jane: Anne recites well, too.

Anne: "The snail's on the thorn;"

Ruby: I can almost see it all.

Anne: "God's in his Heaven—"

Anne: "All's right with the world!"

Ruby: Anne, you're a marvel!

Ruby: You even surprised Mr. Phillips!

Diana: The lark's on the wing;

Diana: The milk's on Anne's cheek.

Ruby: Ruby is right here.

Diana: Anne, wait!

Jane: We always pool our lunches! It's our rule!

Anne: Is it really?

Ruby: We won't let our Anne Shirley get branded as "awful mean."

Diana; Jane; Ruby: Now, let's have a taste!

Anne: Your pie won high acclaim, Marilla.

Anne: Everybody wished they'd had more of it.

Marilla: Then I'll bake more next time.

Matthew: And how were your lessons?

Anne: I'm a little behind, but it wasn't all bad!

Anne: I had wonderful news from Jane.

Anne: What do you think she said, Marilla?

Marilla: I'm sure I don't know.

Anne: She said that I had a very pretty nose!

Matthew: Oh?

Anne: That is the first compliment I have ever had in my life!

Anne: Marilla, have I really a pretty nose? I know you'll tell me the truth.

Marilla: Your nose is well enough.

Anne: Really?! Truly?!

Diana: You look cheery as ever, Anne.

Anne: Yes. I think I can come to like this school.

Diana: You do? I'm so glad!

Anne: You look rather cheery today yourself.

Anne: Has something nice happened?

Diana: I guess Gilbert Blythe will be back in school today.

Anne: Gilbert?

Diana: He's aw'fly handsome.

Diana: He's older than us—nearly fourteen.

Jimmy: Gilbert!

Diana: His father was sick, and he left Avonlea for a few years.

Charlie: It feels like forever. How have you been?

Gilbert: Well!

Carrie: There he is!

Girls: Gilbert!

Girls: It's so good to see you again!

Girls: Gilbert!

Gilbert: Crow!

Anne: "Crow"?

Diana: He calls me that to make fun of me because my hair is so black.

Diana: Oh, that Gilbert!

Phillips: Excellent.

Phillips: Well done, Gilbert.

Gilbert: Thank you, sir.

Diana: Gilbert was the head of his class before the break.

Anne: I can see that.

Anne: I'm glad to have a worthy rival.

Phillips: Now, I'd like you to solve another problem.

Phillips: Does anyone feel confident?

Phillips: Ruby Gillis.

Ruby: Yes, sir!

Ruby: Er...

Ruby: Really!

Phillips: Ruby Gillis, don't keep us waiting.

Anne: I think your Gilbert Blythe is handsome,

Ruby: Y-Yes, sir.

Anne: but I think he's very bold.

Gilbert: Who's she?

Jimmy: Anne Shirley. She's head of your class now.

Minnie: I made a new dress.

Ruby: Oh?

Tommy: Go, go!

Phillips: Keep silent and study!

Jimmy: A girl's ignoring Gilbert!

Jimmy: Can you believe it?!

Gilbert: Carrots.

Gilbert: Carrots.

Anne: You mean, hateful boy!

Jimmy: Oh, wow.

Phillips: What happened here?

Gilbert: I'm sorry, Mr. Phillips! It was my fault!

Phillips: Anne Shirley, what does this mean?

Phillips: Explain yourself, Anne Shirley!

Phillips: Very well.

Phillips: Go and stand in front of the blackboard for the rest of the afternoon.

Phillips: Ann Shirley must learn to control her temper!

Phillips: Now, it is time for your lesson.

Phillips: Turn to page twenty-five in your books.

Phillips: Well? Don't sit there staring!

Anne: He left off the e.

Gilbert: Anne!

Gilbert: Anne Shirley!

Gilbert: Wait!

Gilbert: I'm awful sorry I made fun of your hair.

Gilbert: Honest I am.

Gilbert: Sorry.

Anne: How could Mr. Phillips forget my e?!

Anne: How could Gilbert Blythe make fun of my hair?!

Anne: Why?! Why?! Why?!

Anne: Would you like to join me?

Anne: It helps you feel a little better.

Anne: Oh, no!

Jimmy: Oh, no! We won't make it!

Phillips: Anne Shirley!

Phillips: Since you seem to be so fond of the boys' company,

Phillips: we shall indulge your taste for it this afternoon.

Schoolgirl: That's a boy's seat.

Schoolgirl: Poor her.

Diana: Anne.

Diana: What are you clearing up for, Anne?

Diana: School isn't over yet.

Diana: Oh, Anne!

Anne: I'd do almost anything in the world for you, Diana.

Anne: I'd let myself be torn limb from limb if it would do you any good.

Anne: But I can't do this, so please don't ask it.

Marilla: Nonsense.

Anne: It isn't nonsense at all.

Anne: Don't you understand? I've been insulted!

Anne: I will not go back to school, I assure you.

Marilla: Anne.

Marilla: For once,

Marilla: I'll have to run down and see Rachel about this.
