with a guitar and a couple of speakers.

It was as basic
as you can possibly imagine.

Dragging guitars through airports,

piling them into a... a rental car.

and just keep going.

[Andrea] And she, from a very early age,

always knew exactly
how she wanted things to be...

and she was always planning
what her headline tour would be like.

You know,
I never heard her say the word "fame"

or "money."

It was always just about the opportunity

to go sing her songs

and have everybody else
singing those same words back to her.

She would do these theaters
and they kept getting bigger and bigger

and sold out faster and faster.

-[girl squealing]

[Andrea] So, it was, um,
a gradual thing...

but I don't think
that when you are doing that...

you ever for a split second,

take the time to think,
it will become this.

[Taylor] The European tour was so intense
that by the end

I was exhausted
past a point that I can remember.

[whirring]

So, we need the break after Wembley

to recharge not only our bodies,
our energy, but our...

Our passion for giving
that much every night.

So, that by the time
we got back to the US,

we're all just, like, fired up.

[children laughing]

[Amos] Since we finished the massive
European leg of "The Eras Tour,"

it's really just been

trying to get back up to speed,
being home.

[Matthew] We have this two-month break,

we'll kind of regroup and... [chuckles]
...catch our breath a little bit.

I'm taking care of my home life

and then we'll get ready
for the final push.

[Jeslyn] I love traveling.
I love my job. It's the best,

and, like, everything's planned for us

and then you get home and you're like,
"What do I do?"

And you have to learn how
to schedule things for yourself again.

I'm really excited for this break,

so that I can sit right here...

[chuckles] and... and practice.

[Tamiya] I do live with my parents,
my little brother and my grandma.

I love coming home to them, getting,
like, home cooked meals and stuff.

I am eventually gonna
get my own apartment in LA.

Rachel and I don't have children, but...

I mean, I get... Went crazy,

You know, just trying to get back

Yeah, this should be first probably.

[Taylor] Nostalgia is a huge part
of "The Eras Tour."

If you were twelve years old
during the Red Era...

-...you're gonna remember certain things

that you saw
and certain things that you felt.

It's my job to bring those feelings
and those visuals back to you.

Wardrobe is one way to do that.

Oh, I love it.

Oh, I'm so excited about it.

The costume design for "The Eras Tour"

was undertaken by my longtime stylist,
Joseph Cassell.

He's been with me since I was sixteen.

[Joseph] "The Eras Tour"
is all about the fans, you know?

The reason I'm able to do my job so well

is because I am a fan, too.

I love the organic way
that Taylor and I work.

It's like this secret language
that we have.

She would send me images.

She'll be like, "Ooh."

[clicks tongue] Sent me an image.
And I'm like, "Ah-ha!"

-Hey. You did?
-[Taylor] Hi, had an epiphany last night.

Then I pulled about
fifty different pictures from online.

-[Joseph] Nice.
-For the acoustic set.

-[Joseph] Awesome. [gasps]
-I want it to be all '50s dresses.

For the tour, we chose to be
a little reflective and sentimental

and tie in the designers who had been
with Taylor from the beginning.

I mean, dancing all night.

Yeah, my feet ache,
but I'm wearing Louboutins.

Like, it is a privilege
for these feet to ache like this.

This was designed by Roberto Cavalli.

-She puts it on in the dark on stage.
-[ripping]

The magic of Velcro.

I remember it like it was yesterday.

Reputation.

These strips are all sequined by hand.

Cavalli, 1989.

I remember meeting with Versace in Milan,

and then I was like, "Oh, my gosh."

When you see the Versace bodysuit

just made of all these crystals

and the light hits it
and it's just... [chittering]

So obsessed with this.

This is my new, my new favorite for sure.

It somehow, like,
heals me from having the stomach flu.

It can take me
from being utterly exhausted...

I got to be on the level of this outfit."

My mom made this outfit from scratch.

on "The Eras Tour" is, of course,

this never-changing Reputation bodysuit.

Which we've only gotten one,
the entire 131 shows.

for a new Reputation bodysuit.

Just for funsies, if she were to have
a new reputation bodysuit,

what would you want it to look like?

[Taylor] This is the new one.

-[Joseph] This is the new one.

Oh, it doesn't look bad at all.

The original catsuit
was made from a different fabric.

That was all the fabric
that there was in the world.

So we had to recreate the fabric
for the second one and for this one.

-It's just really annoying

and I have to do
athletic sh*t in this.

Well, we thought we could fix it
because there was no time for them

to actually recreate a new one
in time for Miami.

-They couldn't do it.
-[sighs]

[Mike] This is the tour gift wall

where at the end of each tour,
we get a plaque

thanking us for the, you know,
for participating in the tour.

This was my first tour with her
and I started with Taylor in 2009.

In the trajectory of my, uh,
professional life and career,

yeah, that's probably the zero to sixty,
right there,

strapped on to that rocket

and have been able to do
all of this with her, which is great.

Yeah.

-You remember this? [chuckles]
-[Brittany] Aw.

Here we go.

It was her first birthday present
from Taylor.

[unzipping]

It's got a little photo
of Mommy and Sophie,

Daddy and Sophie and then Miss Taylor,
as she calls her.

-Miss Taylor.
-Yes, Miss Taylor. [chuckles]

We had both our kids
while I was working for her,

so, she was kind of
around both of the births

and I think that this was...

-the first child.
-First born.

-First kid born, while in the band, um...
-Yeah.

And so, yeah, it was a sp...
I think it was a special moment.

-Yeah.
-Um, yeah.

-[indistinct chatter]
-[woman laughing]

[Taylor] It's so wonderful being able
to carry a professional family with you

as you go through phases of life

as you go through ups and downs
and heartbreaks.

[♪ Dramatic music playing]

[Amos] There is such a special bond
among the touring family,

that's, it's like having another family.

They're the only other people really
in the world who know what this is like.

Before the show, after the show,
on the off days,

we are like this, and that's not normal.

It's like she's handpicked
these incredible people

to be a part of this family.

[Taylor] Most of the people
I'm out here on the road with

have known me since high school.

-[hisses]
-[groans]

But also there are people
that I just got to know

in this phase of my life.

Jeslyn is one
of the most talented, resilient,

loving people I've ever been around.

She was the newest addition
to our backup singers.

[Jeslyn] I started with her on Reputation.

I had never done a stadium tour before

and so the first show was just like,

"Whoa, this is a lot of people."
[chuckles]

[Taylor] We've been singing together
for a couple of years,

and when Jeslyn got sick,

it was the first blow that
the tour family experienced emotionally.

It was, like,
completely unfathomable to us.

[sniffles] This sucks.

While on tour,
I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

[inhales sharply] Um...

and obviously it was devastating...

but every weekend we had a show,
so I still flew to the next city,

did a show with everyone and,

in the middle of the week
when we weren't doing shows,

I would fly back to LA
and just had biopsies

and just poked and prodded to learn

really what I had to do, treatment-wise

and then hopped back on stage

and pretended
like nothing was happening.

[Taylor] I'll never forget
when she told us,

everyone was just in shambles
and it's the not knowing.

Here I go.

When I let Taylor know,
she came storming in

with hugs and crying
and just saying, "I'm so sorry."

And her mom said,
"You just take care of you"

"and we'll be here when you're ready."

[♪ Dramatic music playing]

So, six months, I had to, like,
take off and go through chemo...

Surgery.

I had edema. I had, like, skin issues.

I usually have
all this curly hair. [chuckling]

I lost about 75% of my hair.

I felt and looked completely different

and just kind of watched my friends
on live streams in the show.

It was a hard one because
we got to come be together for months.

We love you, Jeslyn, and we miss you!

-We love you, honey.
-Uh, love you, Jes!

-[Jestina] She was home by herself.
-Bye, see you!

I miss you.

[Jestina] Isolated from the family.

We just wanted her to know
that no matter what,

under any circumstances,

if she wanted to come back, she could.

[Jeslyn] Whoo!

-[ringing]

Goodbye, treatment.

How quickly can I get back on tour

after I'm done with radiation?

My doctor said that night.

But you have to get back into shape.

She literally finished radiation
and got on a plane.

Um, I actually have a video of when
we saw each other at the hotel.

[laughing]

[Jeslyn] Just coming back
to this joy-filled show,

and these people just emphasized even more
how much we're a family.

[crowd cheering]

[Taylor] I cannot believe
that she was back in a few months.

The will to come back
and do the hardest show ever.

None of us could believe it.

I still can't.

-[indistinct chatter]
-[vehicles moving]

[rope thudding]

[trainer] There you go.

[breathing heavily]

-Blacked out. [groans]
-[trainer chuckles]

Right, and you just keep your body still.

At any point in the show. [panting]

Just wanna flag that as I do
every time I have to do pull-ups.

-[Taylor panting]
-[chuckling]

[Kirk] And twelve, that's it.

You have gotten stronger on those
throughout the years.

It's from all the pent-up rage
and resentment I have for them.

So you, so you leave on Thursday night,
I've heard.

...which I'm really excited about,
with costumes.

I wanna be, like, back in it so much
that I can, like, not be so, like...

do this without rehearsal.

There are a lot of things
that we pulled off on this tour

that I've never even
attempted on past tours.

I think the longest show I ever did before
was two hours and fifteen minutes.

[Kirk] Five. Strong.

I never would've believed you
if you would've told me

we'd be doing
a three-and-a-half hour show.

[Taylor breathing heavily]

-[Kirk] There we go.
-[Taylor] Saying that is one thing.

-Doing that, physically, is another.
-[Kirk] Eleven.

I've never worked out
this much in my life.

It's horrible.

[singing] ♪ I stay out too late ♪

I really had to up my game
in terms of physical training.

-[Kirk] One. Very strong.
-[Taylor breathing heavily]

[Taylor] Six months ahead
of my first rehearsal,

running on the treadmill every single day

at the tempo of the songs
that I was playing

while singing them out loud.

You just don't want them
to see you panting.

and Reputation are very high cardio.

Anything's hard
when you're scaling a stage

that goes the entire length
of an NFL stadium.

I think I run, like,
eight miles in the show.

[woman] Once we get to Miami,

the turnaround time from landing
and performing will be very short.

[Max] We leave in six days.

Haven't played the show
in a couple months,

and there are some things
I wanna make sure that I don't mess up.

♪ My ex-man brought his new girlfriend ♪

♪ She's like, "Oh my God,"
But I'm just gonna shake ♪

well-behaved cat for it.

So it's lots of hugging,
telling the same story, like, fifty times

Which is very bittersweet, it's very sad.

I got really excited all of a sudden.

I've never had an alternate outfit
for the Reputation section. Not once.

[Joseph] People are going
to lose their minds.

[Andrea] As we were getting ready
to go back into the shows again,

Taylor was like, "Mom,
I'm really worried."

"I'm trying to go back in my mind
and run through the show,"

"and I get to certain spots
and it just stops."

And I said, "Don't worry about it."

I said,
"You're gonna get back on that stage"

"and everything will come flooding back.
I guarantee it."

And I hoped that I was right,
but I didn't know.

Performing that show
is incredibly technical and hard.

[Taylor] This tour isn't kind of, like,

"Oh, we just fly by the seat
of our pants around here."

No, like, we stage manage
the sh*t out of this show.

We're dealing with lots
of production elements.

Lighting, screen content, pyro,

moving floors, confetti,

costumes, choreography.

There's so many moving parts,

and it has to be no mistakes,
perfect timing.

[man] There's a lot going on
that happens really fast.

A lot of fast cues
from one end of the stage to the other.

See piano lift up. Go!

It's nerve racking.

Three. Point three UFO. Go!

Go. Go. Go.

[man 2] It takes a lot taking
the right stuff out at the right times,

so we all have to communicate well.
We're always moving.

[indistinct chatter]

[Chad] The wings can be challenging.

We have had incidents where they've broke.

If there's high winds, it gets really hard
for them 'cause it's super heavy.

[Rick] Cue, forty-three-o-one. Go.

[air hissing]

[Andrea] She's singing,
and having to engage,

and having to figure out
what's coming next.

She has some flexibility
in where she might go,

but there are sometimes
when it's very exact

and if she's not standing
in the right place,

it's actually dangerous.

[Taylor] I don't wanna fall in a hole,
nor have, like,

pyro go off on my head.

I legitimately celebrate like every moment
that something doesn't go wrong.

Everybody is firing on all cylinders.

[Jestina] I work
in the wardrobe department.

And I also am one of Taylor's dressers,
there's two of us.

Every outfit change is about
a minute and fifteen or less.

Our fastest quick-change, though,
is 39 seconds with her in the room.

[Andrea] Those quick-changes are like
nothing you've ever seen before.

It is like watching a NASCAR race.

[producer] How many quick-changes
does she have?

Like twenty quick-changes.

[Jestina] Our crew helped us
build four quick-change booths.

From there we kind of travel through
the underworld of the stage.

It's all very, very fast.

[audience cheering]

We don't really have time for snags.

It's very choreographed.

Every second counts,
every millisecond counts.

[Taylor] There were moments
where I thought,

"I don't know if these costume changes
are gonna happen in time."

I'm only off the stage
for a maximum of two minutes at a time.

Those transitions,
it's like I'm going under the stage,

I'm getting on a weird,
like, pulley system.

I'm getting pulled over here.

Meanwhile, I'm unzipping my thing.
I'm running upstairs,

I'm going into a different quick-change
room on a whole different floor.

I'm ripping this off, I'm putting this on.

"Stomp your feet three times."

It's literally
the most complicated system.

You have no idea the panic

of worrying you're not gonna be dressed
in time for the song to start

and it is that panic
that drives me to never be late.

I remember one time
I was running from the evermore era.

I trip over the hem of my dress.

Bust my knee.

I skid the palm of my hand off.

Hobble into the quick-change room,
blood's coming down my hand.

I'm changing
into the Reputation body suit,

the skin that's flapping off,
I just pull it off, more blood.

They don't have a Band-Aid back there.

[mimicking drums] Wasn't late.

Wasn't late for the intro of that song.

The fans noticed it a couple days later,
they're like, "Oh, her palm's gone."

I was, like, I am not acknowledging this.

What? Nothin's wrong.
That's always been like that.

-Space.
-[indistinct chatter]

[woman] Dewey, I thought you said
she might wanna go back up.

[Shepherd] Doesn't matter.
You guys we gotta...

-Straight in.

[Taylor] It was really good,
but I made three mistakes

that I'm so glad I made in a rehearsal,
