GIRL: I got a bunch of sticks.
BOY: Today we are building art out of nature.

GIRL: We're at Mass Audubon's Habitat Education Center...
...and Wildlife Sanctuary.
I'm going to go look for some cool sticks, okay?
You can come if you want to.I'm coming!
GIRL: There's a lot of colors in nature.
Different shades and textures.
GIRL: Everything around us is so beautiful.
GIRL: I was working with some of my friends and a artist.
I'm really amazed at what you all are doing.
Her name is Nilou.
And she does beautiful art.
NILOU: One of the projects I did
when we were coming out of the pandemic,
I interviewed people in my community
about how they got through.
♪
For each flag, I used color and shapes
to express how people in the community were feeling.
I really, really liked the art she made.
BOY: I thought that her art was really nice.
It was so beautiful.
♪
NILOU: So today, we're going take a little walk,
collect a few objects.
We're going to try and create something together.
♪
We started gathering.
NILOU: We don't want to pick any leaves
off any bushes or branches.
Whatever we find on the ground is okay.
We're just not going to pull anything that's living.
Nature, like this.
BOY: Leaves, pine needles,
some birch bark.
And pine cones!
NILOU: We're looking for different colors and textures.
We'll bring them all together
and see what comes out of it.
This is nature art.

Nature has a bunch of color.
They're both brown,
but they're two completely different shades.
And the difference between these leaves are their color.
You see, this is very dark green
and this is a slightly lighter green,
with a mix of yellow and brown.
This leaf looks like a rainbow leaf.
It's, like, orange and yellow and green.
And it's, like, almost like a tie-dye shirt.
BOY: There can be all sorts of colors in nature.
GIRL: A leaf could be green.
Light green, pine green.
Lime green.
BOY: I think that's what makes nature pretty.

NILOU: Let's actually think about what we can make on the ground
with everything we have.
We can make, like, a big circle.
A nest?
I heard you all say circle and nest,
so maybe that's a good place to start.
GIRL: And we're going to make a frame
so that it will outline the nest.
GIRL: And then we're going to cover it
with all these different types of leaves.
NILOU: Think about how you're going to use the colors.
The idea of contrast.
One side of the leaf is bright,
the other side of the leaf is dark.
NILOU: What do we have here?
KIDS: Leaves!NILOU: What color are they?
KIDS: Green!
We moved the colors around
so it wasn't all, like, just one color.
We have these triangles made of the pine cones.
GIRL: And we put the dark side and the light side
in different sections.
GIRL: So we're going to do light side, dark side
for each triangle.
It really does look like a flower.
We're making a little flag.
Yay!
We did it!
GIRL: And we made this amazing art.
BOY: It made me think about
just, like, meditating, because art
really relaxes me, I think.
And it's very peaceful.
GIRL: We can feel the art,
we meditate, and we admire our work.
NILOU: We assemble our pieces and then we put it together,
deciding what goes where and what fits with each other,
and it all comes together to create
this beautiful circle.
GIRL: And we had our parents look at our work.
BOY: I think they really liked it.
These, like, these just connect to it,
because like you can see, the pine cones make a line.
They thought it was so beautiful.
Tell me a little bit more about the middle.
What's going on there?
So one section would be, like, a darker
sense of the leaf, and then another section
would be a lighter side of the leaf.
WOMAN: So beautiful.
BOY: You make art so you can share
your art and your creativity
with other people and see what other people think.
And then that might spark an idea in their brain.
Well, it's true that you can make art out of anything.
