try our hand at zip-lining. All together.

Our family has traveled
in various places throughout the world.

And we lived in Mexico City, Mexico,
for two years.

We have traveled all over the world,
but this house in Decatur, Georgia,

is definitely our home.

But we just really need
a lot of help maximizing the space.

Brooks is sleeping
in the back room in a Murphy bed.

And Walton and I are fortunate
that we both work from home.

And I use our camper
as kind of a makeshift office,

but it's a little tight, yes.

We have four people, two bedrooms,

and this house that we love
is no longer adequate for our needs.

We need to wrap this up
so we can get over there to this house.

It's non-functioning
multifunction right now.

where I could come work.

a year after we moved back.

The family has tried to hack
a bedroom into that closet.

But the problem is,
you have to do a bedroom for Brooks,

and then that disappears,
then during the day, it's a family room.

And we need it to basically
be both at all times.

So, we have to try and figure out
how to hack a bedroom in this space

without it eating into
the rest of the family room.

We have figured out a way to make it work,
but it is really a family room,

and kind of his room in the off-hours,
and not primarily his room,

which is what we want it to be.

[Mikel] So, this is your home office.

But do you guys ever go camping in this?
Like, what's going on?

Well, you know,
sometimes we take her camping,

but not as much as we want to

because it really only sleeps
comfortably two people.

Okay, I've got to see the logistics
of how we make this work.

So... Mary Alice is up there.

-[Jessica] Up there.

-So where's your brother?
-[Elizabeth] Outside in a tent.

-[Mikel] Oh.

So, we need some more functional storage.

We need an office and sleeping for four.

I think we have a lot of big thinking
to do about this small space.

And Lord have mercy,
we got to fix this little table.

more than a screwdriver.

Now that we've seen everything,
we're gonna go back and brainstorm,

and come up with a bunch of ideas
to hack their home and camper.

[Ati] So, this is the problem.

The line of sight from the very front
of the house to the back room,

it's a straight shot.

You can see from the living room
into the kitchen, into the back room.

Also, we have the Murphy bed.
It basically comes into the space.

So if we can get it
out of the line of sight,

then we'd still be able
to use this family back room.

Let's imagine that we try
to take advantage of the tall ceilings

in that crawl space
and build a lofted bedroom

for little Brooks,
so that he can have his own space above.

Then we can hack the space below
into a family room.

We can wall off the laundry room door
and the cutout to the kitchen

to give us more wall space.

We can also add
some kind of door here for privacy.

[Brooks] So we're reclaiming
all this space from the Murphy bed,

but putting it
in the crawl space above it.

[Ati] Exactly.

You think we might be able
to use that whole space for Brooks' loft?

[Ati] I don't know.
I do need to figure out

what's in this space right now.

Because there's no way to know
until we do some exploratory holes.

[Jessica] So, let's say we do
take advantage of these high ceilings

and build a lofted bedroom.

Any thoughts
on how Brooks gets up there to bed?

[Brooks] Because it's such a tight space,
what if we did some kind of staircase?

But it disappears.

-What do you mean?
-[Brooks] Like Houdini.

Imagine something
that folds into nothingness.

[Ati]
Are we talking about an attic ladder?

One of those scissor ladders or something?

[Brooks] No, an attic one goes up,

and we don't want to take the space
away from the loft, right?

We want the bed up there.

I was thinking,
if a staircase became as thin as this...

Okay.

...then we could slide it into the wall,
and it would totally disappear.

I got to keep working out
some more sketches.

Yeah, I think you do.

So, imagine if you had a staircase.
These are the steps, right?

-And you're going up.

But imagine each step collapsed like this.

-Now that makes sense.
-[Jessica] We can do a mechanism.

You like that?

I dig this hack because it doesn't take
any additional space in the family room.

But we've still got the situation
with the camper.

Oh honey. The camper's got to be,
like, hack central

because it only sleeps two people.

And then the other thing is,
Elizabeth literally uses that space.

That is her legit office space.

So, we need to make that portion
in the front that has that rickety table...

We need to hack that,
so that it can be multifunctional, right?

So, office space plus sleeping space.

So, let's hack every inch of the camper
with drawers and shelves.

And we need to make sure those
lock in place when they're on the move.

Ooh, we can even add a little
drink compartment just for Mom and Dad

when they want to have a c*ck
when they need a break from the kids.

And we can also build a functional table
for Elizabeth to work on

that can retract to become
an extra bed for the family to sleep on.

Imagine the table could
come up and down, right?

Now, you're going somewhere.

Now you're eating, you're working.

We bring it down, so that we can bring out
bedding for another two people.

That is smart, but we need to make sure
that the design is clean.

Maybe we play off of, like,
this whole Mexico City theme.

We can bring in some of that,
like, nubby oatmeal.

-We can make it feel like that home.

Now that we have all these great ideas,

we really have to figure out
what's behind that wall,

and I'm a little scared
and excited at the same time

because we just don't know
what we will find behind there.

we don't want to just waste the space.

So, we can hack it into storage
for his clothes, and books, and toys,

and whatever else.

this kind of simple joint idea.

I was thinking we could use
a machine like the CNC router

to quickly and precisely measure
and cut all the parts to the staircase.

-Then we assemble it with metal joints.

[Brooks] I've made this prototype,
and I'm so excited

to see if it's really
gonna functions or not.

I've never seen anything like this.

Help me clamp this up here,
and I'll show you how it works.

This is the cool part.
Imagine in the family room,

little Brooks comes over,
and wants to go up to his loft.

All he has to do is come over,
grab the handrail and pull it down.

-And then you have collapsible staircase.

When he wants it to go away,
it goes flush to the wall.

And now they'll have
the whole family room to do all they want.

I love it! Amazing. This is awesome.

So, we know that the Norris family

So this is a basic scissor lift mechanism,

and this has a great mechanical advantage.

You don't have to put
a lot of effort into moving it.

But you can actually lift
and lower a lot of weight.

A foldable staircase and a secret room.

It was just mind-blowing, shocking.
It's just like my brain exploded.

It feels like
we're not even in the same house.

So in order to create
a proper family room,

we enclosed the door
that goes to the laundry room.

We also walled off
the kitchen window that we had over here.

And then we also installed
these swing doors.

-[young Brooks] I love them.
-[Elizabeth] Gorgeous.

It reminds me those restaurants in Mexico
where you just go through...

[Jessica] Exactly!

And if you take a look here,
this is custom. It actually opens up.

It's a workspace.

It's a workspace.

-[Mary Alice] And anything...
-[Mikel] Yes.

And anything you want
to store down there, you can do there.

-Does that one open too?
-Now, we wouldn't just hack one for you.

[Jessica] And speaking of storage,

we gave you a whole wall of storage
that has a Spanish vibe.

So, we have a closet over here
that's all for Brooks.

We did an open entertainment system here
so you guys can watch TV together.

There's also a secret drawer built-in
for your remotes.

-Mary Alice, where is it?
-[Mikel] Try it.

-Right here.
-[Jessica] Check.

[Elizabeth] Oh, look at that.

[young Brooks]
I didn't realize until you told me.

Let King Dad decree
that the remote shall stay.

-Exactly!
-[laughs]

[Jessica]
And another entire closet.

[Elizabeth] Adding two huge closets
of storage to our house is amazing.

We just feel very grateful
that they took as much time as they did

to consider Brooks,
and how we use the room.

And to create such a magnificent space.

When we started working in this room,

we thought, let's see how much space
we can get there in the attic.

You guys had so much space there.

And I see that you figured out
how to get up there.

We wanted to make
this collapsible staircase

to save as much space as we could
in the family room.

The collapsible staircase,
the way that it folds up

but then comes down,
I think it's a piece of art.

It's something that absolutely
I did not expect, envision, imagine.

It's a true hack.

So, before,
you didn't really have much privacy.

-Right?
-Yeah.

[Mikel] So now you have a louver wall

that gives you
all of the privacy in the world

and allows light and ventilation
into the space.

Now, with your last bed, you kind of had
a dresser and maybe a nightstand, right?

-[young Brooks] Yeah.
-[Mikel] Now we've given you

a completely decked-out storage system.

That's my favorite part.

And did you see that we've even given you
a few other storage options?

We had to really hack the space out
because of the height of the ceilings.

But now this drawer opens up
and it slides out.

And then you have two
additional drawers that are super deep.

And now you have
all of the storage in the world.

This is just amazing. I am so impressed.

This is beyond my wildest dream.

This is a young man
that is going into the sixth grade

and needs his own space.

And so, to be able to give it to him
makes me very proud as a father.

That just hit me hard
what you just said. Thank you.

[laughs] I love that.

What we wanted more than anything
was to give Brooks that space

where he can be alone.

All of his stuff can be in the same room,

and to see how the team has helped us
give that to him,

it's just a wonderful feeling
and very overwhelming.

I am thrilled
with what you guys have done.

And, you guys, thank you for everything
that you have done for us.

Because we have traveled
a lot of places, but this is our home,

this is where we make memories
with our family and friends.
