Yes, Scarlett?
Do you know anything
about the body causing fake pain?
Like, maybe after an injury?
Well, the concept's
certainly not unheard of.
Who here is familiar
with the idea of a phantom pain?
Good. Well, it's often associated
with amputees.
After a limb has been removed,
it can take the brain a few weeks
to fully accept
that those pain receptors
are no longer available.
So the pain receptors can still act up
even after an injury has healed?
Exactly. Let me think of
an example for you.
Bradley, are you able to touch your toes?
- No.
- [class tittering]
Could you come up here and try for us?
- [Bradley groaning]
- [Ms. Claver] Are you feeling any pain?
- Yes.
- Stay there for us if you can.
Now, Bradley is probably convinced
that he's at his full range of motion.
However, the typical body will start
sending out pain signals
at roughly 70% of the end range of motion.
I suspect if Bradley were to stay
in this position for a minute or so,
we'd see his hands
fall quite a bit closer to the ground.
This is partially his muscles warming up.
But also, Bradley's brain
is becoming comfortable
with the idea of being at 70%,
which will then begrudgingly allow him
to move towards 80. Why?
- To stop him from injuring himself?
- [Ms. Claver] Correct.
But if Bradley were to overexert himself
and pull a muscle at 90%...
He would only be able to go to 70% again.
Close. More likely,
he'll start feeling pain at 60%,
so that the body has that extra buffer
available to heal.
