So, because we took a wall out,

and it was very important for us

to maximize storage,

so we have it, your uppers,

and to take pride

I just love it and, like,

it teaches them a little independence,

-and I think they're gonna enjoy it.

And we also knew how tough it was for you

to have to do laundry in the garage.

Tate's gonna love that we don't have

to go out in the garage to do laundry.

We live in Alhambra, California.

JOSEPH:

We live here with our three

beautiful children and my mother.

-Grandma?

-How did you learn how to make guacamole?

-My mom.

Did she gave you the recipe

or did you just, like, learn from her?

Not a really recipe.

Just kind of see how she does it

and you remember.

This is our family home.

Um, we have, uh, lived here for 50 years.

So, I was raised in this house.

A lot of pride has gone

into our garden, into the house,

and there's little parts

of all of us here.

JOSEPH:

I left for a little while,

spread my wings.

In 2014, we got married.

We had already had our little daughter,

and we were now expecting twin sons.

We decided to rent

a townhouse at the time.

My mother-in-law would drive,

like, at 5:00 in the morning

to help us out with the twins.

It was a little too far from her,

but she stayed there all day.

On weekends, she was excited.

She wanted to see them.

So she was never home.

Run to get me the salt.

JOSEPH:

We decided as a family to pack up

and come back to my childhood home.

VICTOR:

Just made sense.

We can help each other out,

just kind of enjoy each other's company

and watch the kids grow together.

-Okay, who wants to try the guacamole?

-It's not a big house.

Sometimes we're kind of

climbing over each other,

trying to find our space.

So, that's quite a challenge

because fighting for sink space,

the shower is tiny.

to the restroom and walking back.

She did fall once.

That's a concern.

She's turning 80 years old.

You know, we want to make things

a little bit more accessible for her.

YOLANDA:

Ow, you stepped on my toe.

Everybody has their own room

except the twins.

And it's been a game changer lately,

hearing them argue.

I really, really, really need more space.

One's a little tidier

than the other, one's, uh,

a little louder than the other.

Definitely have an

interesting stage

-where they're trying to claim their area.

We're excited, we're blessed to be able

to-to have the three generations

It's crazy, it's chaotic,

to reimagine a space in a house

that we've had in our family for 50 years

would be such a blessing.

that her and my dad shared together.

We always want to, like, redecorate

Just because a house

worked for your family

when you first moved in

doesn't mean it works for you now.

Listen, kids grow up. Life changes.

And some houses look great on the surface.

But once you really look

into the day-to-day needs

and routines of the people living in it,

you really start to see

some major problems.

-JOSEPH: I've got some visitors.

-VICTOR: Beautiful visitors today.

-YOLANDA: Oh, my God!

especially if they're identical twins.

that they feel seen and heard

as individuals.

-I like to play soccer.

I love music and art. That's my hobbies.

We basically have to figure out

how to make them feel

like they have their own rooms

without giving them their own rooms.

Grandma's room.

Her favorite space in the whole house

is this outdoor water feature,

-beautiful garden.

-LIZZY: No, it's really sweet.

-But it's a window.

-That's a window. Yeah.

We need to figure out

how to get her out there.

LIZZY:

What if we replace the small window

and turn it into

a beautiful French door moment,

so she can just wake up

and walk right outside?

JESSICA:

And then we can build her

a custom vanity in her bedroom,

so she can have her own beauty space--

it'll be bright--

without having to beat the kids

to the bathroom in the morning.

And then we need to give her

access directly to the bathroom.

LIZZY:

So, let's break down the wall

in Yolanda's room

and add a pocket door,

in order to give her direct access

to the shared bathroom.

JESSICA:

Then we can add a custom vanity

with two small sinks

and built-in cabinets on both sides.

LIZZY:

So we can take advantage of

every square inch of this tiny bathroom

for Grandma and

for all the three kids to share.

JESSICA:

And we can probably get rid of the bathtub

and do, like, a big shower.

In the shower, though,

how do we make it

we need to have a 36-inch landing,

and then we'd had to have three steps.

We really wanted to create this, like,

beautiful French door oasis

for Yolanda to be able to step out into,

because she loves nature so much.

And they did such a great job of creating

a really beautiful nature-filled backyard.

to highlight that for her.

so you have to have six feet

when you're doing French doors?

Any door swinging to the outside,

you need to have a landing.

And then, based on the height,

we need three steps going down,

and then, each step is 12 inches.

-So that's six feet.

before I come to the house.

I feel like it's just, like,

too much shock when I get there.

for this tiny little bathroom.

that other treatments use.

And then you get down low,

and then you don't stop. Okay.

And then you're gonna

make a X on the wall.

You want to really move that color.

I feel like this would have been

a game changer when I was a kid,

not having

so much chemicals, like, on the walls.

I had such bad asthma and allergies,

and I was in the hospital all the time.

So that's why when I was

pregnant with Honor and I had

an allergic reaction

to a laundry detergent,

I was, like

I had flashbacks of my childhood

and so many times my throat getting

tight, and I was like, "There's no way.

Like, I don't want my kid

to go through this."

And I didn't think

any kid should go through it.

Right.

So that's where I came up with the idea

of creating a company that doesn't have

chemicals that could cause that issue.

It makes sense. You lived through it.

So why wouldn't you want to help others?
