talk to your family about something?

I'mma show you what went down!

Hmm… Uh…
All right, looks like we made cents,

a tennis ball, and four bags

of pickle chips last quarter.


-But you ate all of them.

-[whines]


[gasps] Does that mean

we can write it off?

Um…

What? Just doing Keys Grant Enterprises'

yearly business taxes!


-[barks]

-Huh?


-Wait, no! Major!

-[barks]


-Come back here!

-[girls laugh]


-Whoa!

-Watch out!


Hey, honey,

where were those special burger buns?


-You said you were grabbing them.

-You told me you would!


-No, that's not what happened.

-I need them for the cookout!


-You said you were going to get them.

-Your dad sure loves his burger buns.


Oh, my parents argue

about little stuff like that all the time.


My dad's just getting ready

for our big cookout this weekend.

And he is serious about barbecue.
Hey, speaking of, you should come!

-Ooh! Cool, I'll be there!

-Awesome!


[groans] I can't work on this essay

anymore.

Wanna do our math assignment instead?
Yeah, that's cool.
Aw, no, no, no! Not again!
I thought I had my math book.

[groans]

I bet I left it at my dad's house.


-No worries. We can share!

I swear I'm always forgetting something

at my mom's house or my dad's house.


-[groans]

-That sounds like the worst.

Yeah, sometimes.

[Switch] They fought over little things,

big things, almost everything.


But it's actually been way better

since they got divorced.

My mom and dad don't argue so much.

[Mom] I told you

that you needed to get them


-cos I was getting tomatoes!

-No, Lillie, I specifically said…


[sighs] My parents always say

they never go to bed angry at each other.

Well, my parents went to bed angry a lot.
But like I said, it's way better now.
Hmm…

-It's OK. I love you.

-[laughs] I love you, too.


-[Mom chuckles]

-[relieved sigh]


All right, Grants, the Annual Cookout

is this weekend! Who's excited?


-Me! Me! Me!

-Me! Me! Me!

[Dad laughs]

Everybody knows I'm the big chillin',

barbecue grillin',

good lookin', slow cookin',

marinatin', top ratin',

King of the Cookout!


[laughs] Well, since I made

a second trip to the store,

now we got our burgers, our buns,

and a ton of veggies

from the community garden, too.


[sighs] This is gonna be such

a great cookout.


-[rattling]

-[both] Huh?

Don't break on me, don't break!

-[fridge powers off]

-It broke.


-[groans]

-I'm calling someone to fix it.

I can fix it! Just give me a minute.
Lillie, we don't have a minute.

The food is gonna go bad

before the cookout.

Don't worry, Conrad.

Now, step back and let Mama work.

I'll have this thing fixed in no time.

[scoffs] Heard that before.

But for now, we gotta eat the food in here

that might go bad.


I volunteer to eat…

the chocolate chip ice cream


to help our family

during this difficult time.

Oh, really? Nice try.
Oh, how about some frozen peas?

-Yuck!

-[Dad] We need to fix the fridge now!


-Lillie, please!

-I said I'll do it!

Conrad, just trust in me!

[Switch]
They fought over little things,

big things, almost everything.

[groans]

[exhales] It's all right.

They won't go to bed angry.

It'll all be better in the morning.

-Good morning, lovely family…

-Lillie, think of my beautiful burgers.


-Huh?

-We have to call someone now!

I did call someone. And her name is "Me."

We can't keep using a cooler.

We are wasting money!


Calling a repair person

is a waste of money.


[Mom] I've got the refrigerator

under control.


-[fridge judders, bangs]

-[Dad groans]


[sighs] I've never seen Mom and Dad

argue for so long before.


They're never supposed to go to bed angry.

They broke their rule.


♪ I thought my family

Fit together perfectly ♪


♪ But maybe my family's breaking apart ♪


♪ All the arguing

Has really got me worried ♪


♪ Man, it's really breaking my heart ♪

No! [pants]
I have to fix this.

Operation "Make Mom and Dad Get Along"

is a go.


-Ready?

-Ready!

Mom! Dad!

-Can you come down here, please?

-[stereo clicks on]


-[Mom] Coming!

-[Dad] What's up?

[chuckles] What's going on in here?
Uh… am I in the right house?

-[claps hands]

-Please have a seat.

[both grunt]

-[both chuckle]

-All right, what do you want?

Mm-hmm! And how much is it going to cost?

We just want you two

to have a nice, romantic dinner.


-[clicks fingers]

-Delicious orange juice

from the frozen region of… concentrate?
Extra pulpy, of course.
Ah, perfect!
Did you take these from the garden?

-[buzzing]

-[shrieks] Is… is that a bug?

[Dad chuckles]
[clears throat] On the menu tonight

is a PB&J with creamy peanut butter

from… the grocery store,


mixed with an organic grape jelly

found… in our cabinet.


-Ooh la-la!

-Well, look at you!


Let me take a photo

of the beautiful couple. Very nice.


-[chuckles]

-[rattling]


What? Oh! Lillie, please,

it's time to call a professional.

Are you saying I'm not a professional?
Not in fridge repair!

-[both groan]

-Our plan didn't work.


-Mm-mm.

-[Dad] How am I gonna make burgers

with a broken fridge?

I can't believe Mom and Dad

are still angry.

[gasps]
What if they get a d… a div… [moans]

More serious going on ♪


♪ I'm so stressed

That I don't know what to do ♪


♪ And I really admit I'm scared to ask ♪


♪ 'Cause that might make it come true ♪

[moans worriedly]
[groans]
[low chatter]

-[Major barks]

-Gotcha!


-[sighs]

-Come on, Karma. Are you even trying?

Ooh, gotcha again!
Hello? Earth to Karma?

My parents were arguing for hours

last night.


They normally never go to bed angry,

but they've been like this for days.

[sighs]
They're gonna get a d…
a divorce.
And I don't know what to do.

[sighs] I'm sorry, Karm.

Have you tried talking to them about it?


No. If I do,

they might start arguing again.

It might just make things worse.

And look, Keys and Major

are already so upset.


-[Major barks]

-[Keys laughs]

Uh… they seem OK to me.

-Look, and so do your parents!

-[laughter]

Hey, Lillie, did you pack the cheese?

The cheese? Conrad, really?

I told you to pack it!


-What? [groans]

-No, stop it!

Stop fighting! [grunts]
You can't split up!

I don't want our family to break apart!

Please, please stop!

[breathes heavily]

-Oh, baby!

-Kar-star, come back!

[cries, sniffles]

♪ Of course they're getting divorced

Never getting back together ♪


♪ But what does it mean for us

If family breaks up forever? ♪


♪ I can't believe it's happening to me

And brother Keys ♪


♪ Dark times from here on out

Are guaranteed ♪


-[howling]

-Huh?

[Keys and Major howl]
[sobs] Let it out, Major. Let it out.
[Keys and Major howl]
Why are you howling?

-We're sad.

-[Major whimpers]


Nothing's gonna be the same now that

Mom and Dad are getting divorced.

I don't want two rooms to clean.

Hey, no matter what happens,

we'll have each other.

[door opens]

-Oh, thank goodness!

-You found her, Keys!

Oh.
Now, what's going on?

Switch says her parents used to argue

a lot before they got divorced.


And when the fridge broke,

you two started to argue a lot.


We've been afraid

that… you'll get a divorce, too.

Oh, honey, we are not getting a divorce.

[sighs] Parents argue sometimes.

About burger buns. About bills.

And even about noisy fridges.

But when we argue,

we try to argue respectfully.


Maybe we haven't done a good job

of that lately.

We're so sorry, you two.

But why didn't you just tell us

you were worried?

I know I should have.

But I was afraid if I asked you about

divorce it would somehow… make it real.


I know it can feel that way,

but that's not how things work.


And doesn't it feel better

to talk about it?


Yeah. Saying it out loud

actually makes it less scary.


Never be afraid to talk to us

about what's on your mind.

Even if it's about the two of us.

There's no such thing as a perfect family.

We're gonna argue, disagree…

Take barbecue too seriously.
[scoffs] My burgers speak for themselves!

[Barry White voice] "Is it delicious

in here, or is it just me?!"

[all laugh]

[sighs] Let's all promise to always talk

to each other about how we're feeling, OK?


-Promise.

-You've got it.

Always! "Sho nuff!"

-[laughter]

-Come on, bring it in, Keys.

-[Dad laughs]

Ew! Karma, what's happening?
I don't know. But let it.
