The Tour,
and the perennial issue of finances.

Now, being a manager of a team like yours,

how are you affected financially
within the whole cycling economy?

One thing is certain, the model, my model,

will be dead three years from now.

Today, the UAE team
are on over 60 million.

And we get by on under 17
with 150 salaries to find.

What's certain is that
we need to find a way, uh,

to protect smaller teams
and stop 'em from going hungry.

[Jurdie] The top three podium places

are usually taken
by teams with the biggest budgets.

Cash is king. And that's the truth.

[Madiot] It's like in football,
the more money you have,

the better players or riders you can get.

We try to do the best we can
with what we have,

but for a small team,
it's difficult to survive on the Tour.

These people are way above us
because they have a lot more money.

[intense music playing]

[reporter] How would you say
that the UAE Team Emirates

differentiates from other teams competing?

We're just the best. [crowd chuckles]

UAE Team Emirates have upwards
of 60 million to play with.

That's a budget
of some four times other teams.

And this year,
they have ploughed all their money

into building a super team.

Seven other riders, beyond any other team,

could lead that team outright.

They are phenomenal.

But here,
they're all dedicated to one mission.

And that's to help Tadej Pogačar.

He has lost the Tour de France
for the last two years.

He wants to get this back.

And you can see everyone's going crazy.

And it's really just begun to dawn on us
that this world-famous spectacle

could work wonders for us all.

doesn't have the budget
to invest in a great leader.

They have a young rookie
called Kévin Vauquelin.

He's from Normandy
and is capable of great things.

He has several World Cup placings
to his credit.

But he's never competed in the Tour.

And the Tour de France
is the major league.

are you excited, stressed, happy?

I was always told the Tour's machine,

a steamroller.

But I feel confident.

I don't think I really need to worry.

From the moment you spot a chance,
and there aren't that many,

And on this first stage,

I got into the ambulance.
I went to the hospital.

I had a broken collarbone.

Both of my lungs were punctured.

And it was, yeah, very, very painful.

Before I could start training properly,

it was at least a month and a half
from the crash.

This is the first time
back on the bike for me.

Riding outside.

And it's really nice
to finally be able to ride.

[Niermann] We really had
big doubts, because,

yeah, he… it was a very bad crash,
and it had a very big impact on Jonas.

Will he be able to compete
for three weeks in the Tour de France?

We'll just have to take it day by day.

But if we want to win the Tour,
we have to beat Pogačar.

I would say is that after,
yeah, a hard period, a sh*t period,

we believe that Jonas
is getting better and better and better.

So we want to go for GC.
