An unprecedented
and eagerly awaited stage.

There are 14 of these dirt tracks in all,
over a total of 32 kilometres.

It's going to be an epic day.

Some people think that this stage
is needlessly dangerous.



It promises just absolute carnage.

is controversial.

There are some GC riders
who think that it's sh*t really,

just a load of old bullshit.

This stage definitely can cause trouble.

Yeah, it is quite a risk.

Gravel racing is chaos.

A GC rider's worst nightmare.

When I found out that this year

Last year was a very different Tour
to my first year.

I was riding the GC,

but it kind of went wrong.

And I didn't really achieve anything.

This year I want to make up for it.

So, yeah, it is on my mind.

After being hyped up
as the big GC hope for Team INEOS,

and not winning a stage last year,

this year,
Pidcock is targeting stage wins.

He has a point to prove.

Especially after his epic win
up Alpe d'Huez in 2022.

out of being in the spotlight.

Hundreds of thousands of people
watching on the side of the road.

That's what I'm here for.

And this year, I want to do it again.

With his background
in mountain biking and cyclocross,

the pressure is on Tom Pidcock
for this gravel stage.

But he's not the only one
who sees the opportunity for a stage win.

compared to other teams.

That doesn't bother me.
It's a positive in my book.

Forming tomorrow's champions,
that's my true calling.

The history of the team.

And there's still room
for another ten years, I suppose,

and more.

but their last win was in 2017.

They need to be competitive

if they don't want to compromise
their future in the Tour de France.

has breathed life into us.

But you have to secure victory to survive.

It's very fragile.

But the gravel stage…

it's a really good chance for us.

Many of the GC riders
will really have so much to lose that day.

But we won't though.

The dynamic's well and truly reversed.
This stage is perfect for us.

Some teams obviously
aren't enamoured of this stage

because it's dangerous.

And that just really pisses me off.

'Cause their leader could be hurt, yeah.

Sure. And ours too. Deal with it.

Dangerous stages level the playing field.

it's tailor-made for Antho.

So, I think we can
attack it with confidence.

I've known Anthony for a very long time.

I'm not saying
he'll win the Tour de France.

But we're not going
to miss out on that stage.

It's the chance we've been waiting for.

I never actually never came here.

When we were young, I was always

my brothers ever since we were little.

I'd let my older bro win,

Always had to get

My brothers did it, my mum, my dad,
it was like a family tradition.

Well, no more than we all were.

We got better and better
every year, you know?

And we all just like
pushed ourselves to the highest level.

The Tour is still
the biggest race in the cycling calendar,

one we always aimed for.

[Anthony] I've ridden in
the Tour a number of times.

-This your seventh time? This year?
-Yeah, this is the seventh time.

But it's maybe about time
I got a result, though.

Not just in the top ten.

Anthony Turgis is a rider
who's a specialist in the one-day race,

the classic.

He has ranked in the top ten,

but he hasn't yet brought home
a trophy of any real significance.

It's not easy with the, uh,
tactics of the bigger teams.

-They're arseholes.
-[laughing]

the same guys who end up winning.

Yeah, it is.

Obviously, the gravel stage
could be really cool.

I like a classic bike race.

I adore the cobble stage,
the sense of danger.

So, I am very happy
to have races like the gravel stage.

When you're my style of rider,

there aren't that many
opportunities for me to win.

So, I gotta grab them when I can.

When your legs are hurting, ours hurt too.

My little brother Tanguy,
when he was a boy,

was a precocious young rider.

It's a miracle
that he's still alive today.

His heart problems began very suddenly.

We were in the same race at the time
and I had no idea what was going on.

I remember asking to hide behind the car

so Anthony wouldn't
see me there, me lying on the ground,

as he went past.

Even though I was lying there
fighting for my life.

It… It was a disturbing time for us.

And when it happened
to my big brother as well,

they both had to stop.

Bike racing was off-limits for them.

Well, we all feel somewhat responsible.

We knew that
it could be something hereditary.

So, they keep an eye on me as well.

I have to have
regular cardiovascular tests.

But at any moment,
they could tell me to stop.

Would've been a dream to ride
he Tour de France all on the same team.

Now, the dream's to see Anthony
be great in the Tour.

'Cause he will shine for us all, yeah?

We didn't think it was gonna be like this.

So, every year, I do this for my bros,
I embrace it and perform to the maximum.

And that's why
I'm never gonna stop trying.

Because of the nature of the terrain,

All sorts of things can go wrong.

Anything can happen.
There's a chance of crashes, punctures,

losing significant amount of time.

So for our big four,

their GC ambitions
can be over in a single day.

We know the gravel stage
means a lot of chaos

concerning crashes, especially.

So before the Tour,

we did the recon with the riders
to see what it looked like.

But Jonas was at home recovering.

[Vingegaard] This is like a labyrinth.

So for him,
it will be a race into the unknown.

How was your day?

[Vingegaard] Yeah, a bit sore.

You had some complaints
about your Achilles.

Yeah, the thing is, like,
it's a little bit sore. If I can…

I have some scar tissue on the right one.

Of course, it's really frustrating that,
after his crash,

it's taking a while for Jonas to recover.

But, yeah,

More viewers means more money.

At the end of the day,
the Tour de France is still a business.

This stage was magnificent.

There is action, suspense,
so many spectators watching,

the enthusiasm, the passion,
and the excitement.

It's what we come here for.

With a stage win up for grabs
for the pure specialists.

In Tom, we got a guy
that's proven on terrain like this

that he can respond to the best
and be the best.

In general, all the gravel sectors
are pretty narrow.

With 170 riders,
there will always be chaos.

The main goal is to get Jonas
through the stage in the first group,

and not give any time to Pogačar,
Primož, and Evenepoel.

But mainly Pogačar.

One-on-one, the stage suits Tadej
much more than it suits Jonas.

There is quite a big weight difference
between them.

Jonas is lighter, so on the gravel,
it's harder to control the bike,

and then it's much more likely
that you have a flat tyre.

Very important, Tiesj, Matteo,
Christophe and Wout,

try to be there all the time around
Jonas on the gravel.

I don't think any of your GC competitors

will be as well surrounded
as you are, Jonas.

For Jonas,
his life insurance is his teammates.

Be ready for a very nervous
and hectic day in the saddle.

For sure, things will happen.

it's super narrow.

There's just no room to move.

And if there's, like, 40 guys there,

that's like, completely game over.

You might end up in the ditch.

The risk is really big.

He could lose
a significant amount of time.

it was not worth the risk.

Especially with the crash
and coming back from that.

if I would have done that,
