but I never imagined
I would be so, so good.

I think next year is just for learning,
and to race as much as I can.

When you put a number on him,

In the high mountain stages
with the innate talent that he has,

he's the one guy that if you really
put all the pieces together,

could actually challenge

Tadej Pogačar,
Jonas Vingegaards of the world.

-You can't force it.
-We got to do the best we can this year.

And if it doesn't go well,

then I think we have to take
a big hard look on the rider roster,

and we'll have to have
a hard conversation with him.

Or you're gonna have to have
a hard conversation with him.

For me personally, I'm the one
who put my name next to signing Richard.

And I'm the one who said, you know,
this is the best bet for our team.

If he doesn't perform,

this could be bad news
for a lot of people.

of people'd lose their jobs.

A lot of people'd lose
their lifelong dreams.

Obviously, it puts pressure
on me professionally.

Then I have to face the consequences

based on making the wrong decision.

[Carapaz] At the end of the day,
the Tour is really tough.

And winning in the mountains
was so important to me.

It was such a hard stage for me.

I did all that I could, but there we go.

[Vaughters] Knowing Richie as I do,
he is gonna be quite disappointed,

but all he needs is to believe in himself.

He has been on the podium
with Pogačar before.

You have to keep trying every single day,

even if it's smashing
against a brick wall,

you know, maybe the brick wall breaks.

It was so upsetting for me.

And… I never fulfilled my potential.

At the end of the day, though,
the competition here is extreme.

The level's higher now.

It gets so much better every year,
and it's difficult to cope with that.

though, we've done really well.

There's a lot of people
