manager Fatih Terim recounts his football journey, from his playing days to coaching and leading several teams to championship glory.

01x02 - Episode 2

A NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY

My mood improves when I'm here.

My children, my grandchildren,

my friends, the garden, the sea...

They all just take me
to a different world.

Of course, living in Istanbul,

you get used to the fast pace of life.

There are issues, problems, whatever.

Things that need solving.

Or you just can't stop yourself
from thinking and planning.

But thankfully,
I have nothing to complain about.

MONACO

Galatasaray is not a football club
that would submit or surrender to anyone.

This is our mentality.

We'll go out and play
against whomever, wherever.

You have to realize

we were at a disadvantage back then.

Our stadium was no match for them.

The pitch was no match.

Our revenue or our transfers
were no match.

There's this thing I laugh about a lot,

but I haven't been able to do it publicly.

I guess I can do so here.

Whenever there's a draw,
let's say Champions League,

our press starts going, "An easy group."

What they call an easy group

consists of clubs
like Manchester, Juventus,

Chelsea, and so on.

I mean, come on.

When we couldn't pay players two million,

they were paying 22.

It did not discourage us, though.

We had to qualify.

GRAND EMPEROR TERİM

{\an8}This is a crucial match

{\an8}that means a lot

{\an8}to our Galatasaray, our Cim-Bom.

{\an8}Galatasaray will be facing
the German club Hertha Berlin

at the first match of the group stage.

Here, here
We want Fatih Terim here

The match begins.

Here's Fatih Terim.

He gets past Capone.
A shot from afar! It's in.

Wosz has it. He shoots.

We concede another goal.

It's such a shock.

-One after another.
-Yeah.

{\an8}Fatih Terim seems to be shocked as well.

This is what we wanted.
The score is 2-1 now.

A lot can happen from now on.

Here he is... It's in the net.

The referee blows his whistle
and ends the match.

{\an8}Our Galatasaray's match in Istanbul

{\an8}ends in a 2-2 tie.

Things happen. They will keep happening.

We'll just keep moving forward.

SEPTEMBER 21, 1999

Leonardo...

One Milan player
costs as much as my entire team.

Despite that, my team...

We're trying to make something
out of nothing here.

Costacurta is there. Hakan Ünsal.

-He's in the box.
-Hakan!

-Goal!
-Come on, Hakan!

An amazing shot from Ümit!

We don't lose hope.

We play. We win, and we lose.

This is soccer.

Nothing will change against Chelsea.

SEPTEMBER 28, 1999

We might get a big advantage if we win.

Otherwise...

He still has the ball. Petrescu!

It's obvious what happens if we lose.

We're going to do whatever it takes
on the pitch in London.

And the Dutch referee d*ck Jol
blows the whistle.

It's such a shame.

{\an8}We played to win every time.

{\an8}We never played to lose.

{\an8}FORMER PLAYER

But we lacked experience,

and since it's the most important thing
in a competition like that,

we made mistakes.

We weren't losing in the Champions League
because of a lack of skill,

but because of a lack of experience.

GROUP STANDINGS

We had one point after three games,

so every finger was pointing at me.

If you're doing badly,

you need to be prepared for the worst.

Chelsea won't survive Ali Sami Yen.

GALATASARAY HAS TO WIN
TERİM IS SURE

You've never heard such words from me.

I trust my team completely.

I believe they will win,
and hopefully, we will.

We have to put pressure.

We have to press hard
and not allow them to think.

We pressed hard from the get-go
as we always did.

We missed a lot of chances.
We went into the box a lot.

We kept them in their half.
One shot even hit the bar.

It bounces off the bar.

We kept attacking.

We kept pushing Chelsea.

Okan shoots. It bounces back.

Morris closes the gap.

Morris is there to help.

Flo shoots and scores.

It was 1-0.
Then with a through ball, it was 2-0.

Another one, 3-0.

Fatih Terim is a coach

who can't exactly hide his feelings.

After such a score,
it's obvious he lost his enthusiasm.

We kept pushing and conceding.
It went 4-0, then 5-0.

-I told you this would be a goal.
-Yeah.

We lost our tempo,

our will, our purpose.

{\an8}It was a heavy defeat.
One we've never had before.

{\an8}FORMER PLAYER

{\an8}We weren't expecting it either.

So here's the last whistle.

Five goals.

We had high hopes, but we failed.

I'm going to be honest.

For the first time in my life,
I wished it was over when it was 3-0.

That night,

it became mathematically impossible

for us to keep going
in the Champions League.

We only had a shot
at qualifying for the UEFA Cup.

Back then, there were certain people

who were ready to kick me when I was down.

Don't worry.
They never got to laugh about it.

The most they got to do was grin.

THE TEAM PERFORMED POORLY AGAINST CHELSEA
GALATASARAY LOSES ALL HOPE

We were at such a point

that he had to win every subsequent game.

I remember him saying something about it.

{\an8}JOURNALIST

{\an8}"Well, we'll just have to win, then."

{\an8}So... Yeah.

Even in his office...

"There's no such thing as impossible."

What was the quote?

{\an8}"There's no such thing as impossible here.
Miracles take time."

{\an8}FORMER PLAYER

{\an8}We used to see that
when we were in his office.

{\an8}It got to us.

{\an8}It was kind of his motto, you know.

Most people like me

usually come from disadvantaged families.

I'm the son of a man who had a limp.

I'm the son of a man
who wouldn't accept defeat.

He taught me
how to be honest and how to fight.

He always took care of me

even though
we had a very rough time back then.

But...

I'm the son of a man
who never begged anyone for help.

I have nothing but respect

for the man who got me here.

I hope he'll be there for me forever.

So I had to face the hardships of life

and get used to them

at a very early age.

I know it's a cliché,
but we were poor but happy.

{\an8}YOUNGER SISTER

{\an8}In order for us to get by,

my father and my brother

worked hard.

They basically carried
the burden themselves.

They struggled and fought
side by side, the two of them.

{\an8}I get goosebumps just talking about it.

{\an8}CHILDHOOD FRIEND

{\an8}It's really not easy

to grow up, to live, to struggle

in such circumstances.

Struggling to get by in a place like Adana

was a beast of its own.

He's my sidekick and companion first,

son second.

Because he started working by my side
when he was five.

We used to sell licorice juice.

The lettuce and the hazelnuts you eat...

I remember selling those with my father.

One morning, we got up at 5:30 a.m.

It was a Sunday.

My late father always told this story.

I was six years old.

One of his legs...

He was basically half a man
who had to use a cane.

We had 300 heads of lettuce in the cart.

We were pushing it together.

For how long can you push that, though?

There was this carriage there.

Adana is known for its phaetons.

The guy said, "Oh God. What is this?"

It was six in the morning.

He said to my father,

"God give you strength.
You're such an honorable man."

He just never gave up, you know?

I guess it's in my genes to, you know...

My father taught me so many values.

We did every job you can imagine.

We did every honest and honorable thing

so we could feed our family.

Thank God.

It's pretty clear
where I get my family values from.

I never changed.

I never became someone else.

I may have changed a bit,

but only because

God gifted me a companion

who had studied in Europe
and spoke three languages,

which was a rare thing back then.

I cannot ever deny

how much she has taught me.

You know the saying,
"Behind every great man is a woman."

I always say Fulya is ahead of me,
not behind.

Do you take Ms. Fulya Adalet Aksu
to be your lawfully wedded wife?

I do.

As Fatih put it beautifully once,

{\an8}"Marriage is a difficult institution."

{\an8}Both sides have to make sacrifices
to make it work.

{\an8}WIFE

No matter what you think,

your spouse is a different person
who has their own customs, traditions.

Naturally, my family had instilled
certain values in me as well.

I took one step towards him,
and he did the same.

I believe we've managed to build

a nice relationship with time.

She brought meaning into my life.
God bless her for that.

And she did that so beautifully

I didn't even realize it.

I just found myself
never wanting to go out.

That takes skill. That's good management.

{\an8}My mother's so on top
of everything and everyone.

{\an8}DAUGHTER

I like to think of her as the CEO

and my father as the owner.

Keeping us all together,

being the bridge,

keeping the balance...

It's not easy.

My mother dedicated her life to it.

{\an8}It's not easy for Mom either.

{\an8}DAUGHTER

{\an8}It's not easy living this life with Dad

{\an8}and sharing the hardships, the sadness,
the joy, the happiness, the career.

That's why I think
my mother is the hero of this story.

We're always tense.
We're always keeping track of the score.

What happens if we win?
What happens if we lose?

We always have to keep that in mind.

Because, after all,

you also have to live through
the problems of a person

who solely holds
the responsibility for everything.

I have to give it to him.

Fatih has never taken anything out on us.

He just punishes himself instead.

Coaching a team

is a very lonely job.

I swear to God.

I'm a loner who's surrounded by people.

You don't see the people you see
when you're climbing the steps

when you're climbing down.

They're not wrong either,
because you make the calls.

If you're not prepared to pay that price,

you can't be a coach.

I never asked for help when I got lonely.

I just came home.

I just embraced it
with my wife and my two children.

I alleviated my loneliness
with the help of my family.

My family and my home
have always been my safe haven.

I never complained.

I paid the price myself.

And I bounced back

very quickly.

I woke up ready for w*r the next morning

and went to training

as if we had won the last match

or as if we had put a stop
to our failures.

GALATASARAY HAS A CHANCE AT THE UEFA CUP

"IT'S GOING TO BE A TOUGH MATCH"

Galatasaray faces Hertha Berlin

in the European Champions League.

{\an8}GALATASARAY FORMER MANAGEMENT

{\an8}Even the management hadn't shown up,
let alone the fans, at the Berlin match.

No one had faith.

The press hardly showed up.

That's what it was like.

Someone asked me a question.

"Are you going to win this?"

I answered him.

"No. We trained for a week
so we could lose."

"We're going to do everything
so we can lose. Don't worry."

We didn't have much faith going in,

because the other three clubs

were competing to stay
in the Champions League.

We were the only ones
without a claim in the group.

It's going to be a penalty kick.

The game started.
We weren't half-bad in the first half.

We were behind 1-0 by halftime.

We were all like,
"It's over. Let's just play and go home."

The first half is over.
Hertha Berlin 1, Galatasaray 0.

We don't get
a 15-minute break at the halftime

so we can have tea, you know.

The break is there
so that you can turn the game around

or keep going
if you're already doing well.

See you again at Olympiastadion Berlin
for the second half.

We had one topic.

"We can lose,

but we can't admit defeat."

No player on the pitch can admit defeat.

My players, my team can't admit defeat.

You know how certain talks
shake you up, bring you around.

It was that kind of talk.

Maybe it was

a bit higher on the Richter scale,

but I believe we came to an understanding,
the players and I.

{\an8}If Galatasaray are confident,
just run away.

{\an8}JOURNALIST

They just ran amok in the second half.

We started the second half so well.

The lions are roaring
at Olympiastadion Berlin.

Hasan... Can he make the cross?
He has two defenders on him.

Jürgen Röber looks surprised.

We had gotten back in the groove.

We were no longer
the defeated team who had let go.

We were once again the team

who thought we could qualify
for the UEFA Cup if we won.

Galatasaray's doing so well.

Cim-Bom has shocked the Germans.

Hertha Berlin's confused.

This is such a lovely display of skill.

It's a night
that Galatasaray will be proud of.

Galatasaray's making history.

{\an8}Beautiful! Amazing! Excellent!
Perfect! Astonishing!

{\an8}Then I heard our fans celebrating.

They were chanting
"Auf Wiedersehen" in German.

It ended 4-1. We scored nice goals.

Auf Wiedersehen!

Tugay and I each had scored one.

I'll never forget his celebration.
He was spinning around and stuff.

I wanted to join him,
so I did some ridiculous moves.

That's why I'll never forget it.

Fatih's lions

have won decidedly against Hertha Berlin

with a score of 4-1.

{\an8}Well, the advantage of working with him...

{\an8}FORMER PLAYER / FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

{\an8}...is knowing you can go against
any team in the world and win.

That's how much he believed.

His vision is that there is no big team,

there is no powerful team.

Everyone can be defeated.

He doesn't know how to lose,
but I don't see that as a negative.

{\an8}He's the kind of man

{\an8}who'd give his all
even if he's playing for fun.

{\an8}JOURNALIST

He's up for every challenge.

He's so stubborn and furious.

He demonstrates that every chance he gets.

-So what? I just hit it. I was ducking.
-No way.

I can give you an example.

Even when we're playing okey,

he just gets so upset when he loses

that I hesitate when I'm about to win.

He's competitive and ambitious even then.

{\an8}Oh, backgammon... He's unbelievable.

{\an8}BUSE TERİM'S HUSBAND

{\an8}I can't even play against him.

Even if it's just backgammon,
he keeps the pressure on.

I just pray he wins.

That's why I lose anyway.

Hang on.

{\an8}MERVE TERİM'S HUSBAND

{\an8}If there's a game to play,
he delves into its DNA right away,

{\an8}figures out how to win in a minute,
and does everything to win.

Here we go.

He doesn't even need motivation.

Just give him a game
and tell him he has to win.

{\an8}It's make or break
for Galatasaray tonight.

{\an8}They lost their chance
in the Champions League.

If they win, they'll be qualified
to play in the UEFA Cup.

We're at the 66th minute mark.

We're behind 2-1 against Milan.

{\an8}Hagi leaves. Hasan Şaş enters the game.

Fatih Terim has to try everything
in the second half.

Everyone was shocked.

I mean...

Eleven players are looking at the board.

The referee puts it up.

Hagi is out.

{\an8}It goes up again. Popescu is out as well.

{\an8}I think that was quite a shock.

{\an8}It affects the players, you know.

{\an8}I figured he was planning
a kamikaze attack.

He did that kind of stuff a lot.

He did things no one would think of.

It worked too.

Milan would've stayed
in the Champions League if they had won.

UEFA Cup if it was a draw.

Total elimination
in case of a loss, though.

They were ahead by one
at around the 85th minute,

so Champions League for them.

Then we scored and made it 2-2,
so now it was just the UEFA Cup.

A penalty kick in injury time.

Ümit... A cross. It's a penalty!

Excellent! That's what we want.

-Come on, Ümit.
-It takes courage, you know.

It does. It's a huge responsibility.

-It's a big deal.
-Come on, Ümit.

An entire nation is waiting for it.

We're ready, Ümit.

The game's almost over.

Come on, Ümit!

We won!

They turned it around at the last minute.

{\an8}Galatasaray will compete in the UEFA Cup.

{\an8}I wish Galatasaray the best.

It was a very interesting game too.

I think it'll go down in history.

Kudos to my players.

{\an8}We played so well and won.
Everyone's happy.

After the match is over,

I feel like I've lifted mountains

or taken an excessive beating.

Being so focused,

thinking about so many things
at any given time,

and acting accordingly...

If the game's going well, it's all fine.

But if it's not,

you have to fix it.

Every substitution is right if you win.

{\an8}If you lose, everyone says,
"The substitutions were unnecessary."

{\an8}But thankfully,
things went well that night.

GALATASARAY CRUSHES MILAN
GODSPEED

GALATASARAY WILL REPRESENT US
AT THE UEFA CUP

TURKEY SPRINGS UP TO ITS FEET!

{\an8}People sometimes criticize Fatih Terim.
"He's just good at motivating."

{\an8}JOURNALIST

You first have to establish the tactics,
the technicalities, the system,

the physiology, the psychology,

the formation,
the philosophy, the mentality.

Only then you can use motivation.

You can't motivate nothing.

It's not as simple as people put it.

"He's just good at motivating." No.

It certainly wasn't just motivation.

Our style, our system at the time
resembled Sacchi's Milan.

Very aggressive,

very active, with incredible personality.

It wasn't just
that he was good at motivating.

Otherwise, he could've motivated
bad or poorly-trained players too.

But he was always a good coach.

We're talking about
the fundamentals of soccer here.

{\an8}FORMER ASSISTANT COACH

{\an8}A player has to enjoy the training
if he's to improve.

The training was tough

but also exciting
as not to bring the players down.

They had so much fun.

When I blew the whistle,

they used to say,
"Coach, let's keep going."

That's why we got so far.

{\an8}That's why the team
eventually became European champions.

{\an8}It's Bologna against Galatasaray.

{\an8}The score is now 1-1!

A GOLDEN GOAL
WE HAVE A CHANCE

They're about to eliminate
yet another Italian club.

Cim-Bom roars!

Galatasaray qualifies!

Finito giocare, resultante importante.

WHERE DID WE LEAVE OFF?

Galatasaray's taking giant steps!

Two goals against the European champions!
This is history being made in Westphalia.

The yellow-and-red shirts
who've been amazing at the European stage,

made history yet again
in Dortmund tonight.

Galatasaray qualifies
for the quarterfinals!

The Turkish soccer scene is proud tonight!

Galatasaray's victory
made the entire country happy.

Galatasaray is up against Mallorca!

The ref blows the whistle.
The whistle means victory!

You're amazing, boys!

They obtained a big advantage
at the away game against Mallorca.

They're going to be comfortable
at the match in Istanbul next week.

Galatasaray will play to qualify
for the semifinals tonight.

He scores!

Galatasaray qualifies for the semifinals!

I believe my team will do what it takes.

This is it!

The world press is praising
Galatasaray's victory.

They say their rise to success
has been unstoppable.

We got together with foreign press a lot.

Since no Turkish team
had such success before,

they found it surreal.

They questioned
Galatasaray's success a lot.

Of course I can tell you.

When you all move as one,

success is inevitable.

But if you're good on the pitch

and bad off the pitch,

you'll struggle.

That means you can't get results.

This is a game of feeling,

a game of performing together.

That's what we did well.

Of course we had problems.

We're all human, after all.

BLOODBATH IN TAKSİM
TWO ENGLISH FANS k*lled

I mean, Leeds...

Leeds is another story on its own.

It all started
when Leeds arrived in Istanbul.

About 15 English hooligans,
after having drinks at a bar in Taksim,

visited The Marmara Hotel
and picked on the Turkish folk nearby.

It all started with cursing
and turned into a brawl.

It started with chairs and sticks,
and then knives were pulled,

causing a bloodbath.

An English hooligan was stabbed
in the neck and the chest.

He had to wait for help to arrive
until police calmed everyone down.

TERROR
TWO ENGLISH FANS k*lled

We called each other
as soon as we heard the news.

I heard two people were dead.
"We're done for," I thought.

Because UEFA says
when there's a match at your stadium,

you're responsible for everything
that happens in the city.

Naturally, it didn't end there.

It was a weird game the next night.

{\an8}A historic night in Istanbul.

{\an8}The big excitement
that is the UEFA Cup semifinals

{\an8}is about to begin.

The ball goes out.

Bakke shoves Bülent.

Leeds United players have short fuses.

A crucial moment at Ali Sami Yen.

Galatasaray 2, Leeds United 0.

Another win in Istanbul.

Congratulations, Galatasaray!

I wish the two fans hadn't died

and we hadn't won that game.

I thought no success
is worth more than a human life.

European championship,

world championship,

whatever big cup you can win.

None of those are
worth more than a person's life.

Some lodged complaints
and asked for sanctions.

They wanted Galatasaray
to be banned from competing.

It was a mess. Such a mess.

We were all thinking about
the second leg and the repercussions.

So we were just brooding over it.

We were expecting punishment.

Then it was announced.

Eighty people including the team.

UEFA CARRIES OUT ITS PUNISHMENT
LEEDS GOT WHAT THEY WANTED!

How was that going to work?
The team is about 50 people.

Plus 30, so 80 in total.

Against 41,000 people.
I knew the atmosphere there.

It's still the same.

Elland Road is a magnificent stadium

with the fans being so close,
the ambiance, everything.

"Will we have trouble there?"

I mean, we had won here,

but we didn't know what would happen there

considering the fans would be
as close to us as we are right now.

Just a few yards.

You could even touch the fans
if you wanted to.

We didn't know what would happen.
It could've gone differently.

The fans could've lynched us
if they went on the pitch.

Players started talking to each other.

They started asking questions
at the meetings.

I didn't want them to be scared,
to get cold feet.

LEEDS, ENGLAND

Fatih Terim went to a Leeds game
a week before the second leg.

Coach went to a Leeds game on his own.

He's bold. No one can deny that.

The game was to start in about 15 minutes.
I was in the stands.

No one welcomed me.

No one greeted me.

No one even said hi.

And everyone saw me when I stood up.

They just...

"You f*cking..." and stuff.

I didn't react. I just watched the game.

I'll never forget it.
I was about to get in the car after.

The fans said what they had to say

and bid me farewell.

Only then did I respond to them.

You know, since I was safe.

Things like, "You'll see" and stuff.

Then I flew back.

Fatih Terim became a shield
against the Leeds fans' anger

by going to that game.

That boosted the team's confidence a lot.

They were all like, "Look at Coach!"

"It was so brave of him.
We'll do the same and play well."

That's the point I wanted to make.

"Guys, I just took Murat Beyazıt with me

and watched the game
with 41,000 Leeds fans around us."

"Have no fear."

That was the message I wanted to send.
"Don't be scared."

Crises and difficult moments
do sometimes happen, right?

But he's the only guy I know

who has the assertiveness

to calm everything down
even at difficult times.

So...

We went to Adidas.

They managed to make

black socks, shorts, and shirts for us
in just 18 hours.

We wanted to relieve the tension.

It was Fatih's idea.

It was meant to be a message
to show we were grieving for their losses.

We all wore black jerseys during warm-up.

We each put a bouquet of flowers
on the sidelines.

It didn't work.

The stadium was so noisy
I couldn't hear the whistle at all.

APRIL 20, 2000

The match still hasn't begun.
The crowd keeps chanting.

Here are the English fans.

The fans are distinctly loud tonight.

So much chanting
at the Elland Road Stadium.

Everyone's on their feet.

It was unbelievably loud.

I'd like to add
that I can't hear anything over the noise.

Good luck, Galatasaray.

The players are tense already.
Fatih Terim stands up nervously.

No "Turkey" or "Galatasaray" chants
from the crowd, naturally.

Leeds United fans are
just bursting with emotion.

Two Leeds supporters had died,

and they saw us as mortal enemies.

Regardless of what we did,
their reaction stayed the same.

The fans, during the game...
The press stands were close to them.

They spat on me so many times
during the game.

Thank God we managed to score early.

Hagi... And goal!

He aims and shoots! Goal!

If we hadn't scored early,

we could've had a hard time
surviving that game.

Galatasaray goes on to the finals!

A milestone in Turkish soccer!

A revolutionary event!

They've qualified for the final!

Then the game was over.
Luckily, nothing bad had happened.

We had beaten them.

We were in the final for the first time
which would happen in 40 days.

{\an8}24 HOURS BEFORE THE FINAL
ISTANBUL - MAY 16, 2000

{\an8}We've always been guests
at these cup matches,

but now,

we're actually participating.

If you want me to tell you how I feel,

I honestly can't.

I can't, because...

Galatasaray were sent off to Copenhagen
with a magnificent ceremony

for the UEFA Cup final game
against Arsenal.

Well, we've won every cup in Turkey.

Now we'll see if we can do it in Europe.

{\an8}20 HOURS 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - MAY 17TH, 2000

{\an8}HOTEL MARINA
ROOM 604

He has to do it, Müfit. I mean...

Things I say here...

It's like how you watch a movie,
then read the book,

then keep remembering the movie
as you read the book.

Flashbacks and stuff. Just like that.

Arsenal had an extremely high budget.

I remember how bookmakers gave
Galatasaray 250 to 1 odds, even.

It was a tough final.

It was obvious it wasn't going to be easy.

We were up against such a team

that you never knew
what any player might do at any moment.

Think about it. Overmars out, Kanu in.

Kanu out, Henry in.

Henry out, Šuker in.

Then, there's Bergkamp.

What a player.

{\an8}17 HOURS 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL
MAY 17, 2000

{\an8}Because, especially the midfield...
Adams and Kewell are very good.

Sylvinho is a good back,
but he likes to push forward.

He's not exactly a defender.

Then, there was Arsène Wenger.

He liked to pass a lot
and keep control of the ball.

A coach who had been so successful.

A coach I respected and appreciated.

They had such a good squad.

Please listen to me carefully.

Arsenal had about 20 foreign players.

We had four.

We had seven Turkish players
and eight players from the youth team

in the squad.

It's not easy, you know.

COPENHAGEN
DENMARK

{\an8}2 HOURS 45 MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL
MAY 17, 2000

When we got on to the bus
for the trip that'd go down in history,

I got nervous.

I was thinking about so many things.

I doubt I can remember them all.

I was looking around,
but I wasn't seeing anything.

The fans, the applause...

We get the cup.

We get up on the stage.
I think about my country.

I think about my family.

That was the sort of thing
I was thinking about.

On the other hand,

I was saying to myself,
"What if this and that happens?"

"You have to take measures."

It was a mix of emotions.

I was also happy
to have fulfilled my duties.

But my heart was

sort of aching.

It was bittersweet.

Maybe it was aching for success.

That's what I hoped for.

People were cheering for us outside.

"Cim-Bom is the biggest!" and stuff.

It was just the place for that chant.

{\an8}2 HOURS 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL
MAY 17, 2000

{\an8}COPENHAGEN CITY SQUARE

{\an8}All right. Where the ball goes, we go.

{\an8}20 MINUTES BEFORE THE FINAL

We have to start well.

Don't take risks.

No offside traps.

The backups are in place.

When we push forward,
we're going to go all out together.

Just play! You've done this before.

We were already done with
the tactics and the technicalities.

That was a motivational speech.

That was the speech they deserved.

It was just a ten-second introduction.

The script had been already written
during the previous four years.

The point of the speech?

"Don't be afraid to lose.
Just go out and play."

"Just play."

"You've done this before.
You've done it spectacularly."

You're going to win. You're going to try.

No matter the result,

you've always been champions in my heart,

and you always will be.

Godspeed!

This is a historical moment
at the Parken Stadium.

Here are Galatasaray and Arsenal

on the pitch together.

This is the final round

of the UEFA Cup.

Here it begins.

Ümit intercepts.

He's offside.

During the first few moments of a game,

the coach sees

whether his line of thinking,
tactics, or strategy is working or not

and takes urgent measures

if need be.

But when a player says,

"Hang on a second."

"I'm dribbling."

"Look. I dribbled past two of them..."

The moment the player feels that,

you can rest assured.

Why am I saying this?

Because we're not from a country

where clubs qualify for finals
year after year.

It's not easy.

It gives me goosebumps
just talking about it.

He crosses the ball.

The ball passes both of them.

That was such a good chance.

I didn't notice it back then,

but Bülent Ünder said something to me
years after the game.

"Pay attention when you watch it."

"Try to spot a single Galatasaray player
who took a fall when tackled or pushed."

Give me one single player who took a fall.

I watched the entirety of the game.

Not even Okan,
whom we called "Tiny" back then,

took a fall on the pitch.

What kept us on our feet

was our bond and our faith.

And someone instilled that faith.
Coach had truly mastered that art.

Galatasaray have been doing
their best and more in the final.

This is such a joy to watch.

Not an easy feat.

I was ten back then.

I was at a level of understanding

where I could tell it was a goal
when the ball went in.

My mom told me
to recite every prayer I knew.

My mouth had gone dry

because I prayed all day every day.

The girls kept saying,

"Mom, why isn't it working?"

"I've been praying a lot.
Can't God hear my prayers?"

"Why can't we score?"

The referee blows his whistle,
and it's full time.

Galatasaray 0, Arsenal 0.

It's extra time now.

So we had 30 more minutes.
Golden goal was still a thing back then.

So it could've been over in a minute
or taken half an hour.

"Please, guys. We need the entire team."
That's what I kept saying.

Here we are. Extra time.

Adams didn't let go.

That's too rough. Oh, come on!

Hagi! Why, Hagi?

Adams gets a yellow. Here's the red.

Hagi is shown the red card.

It wasn't fair. It just wasn't.

The ref wanted to make a difference,
but a negative one.

What was I supposed to do?

The team handled the rest.

That was a difficult moment
that could've brought us down.

We had to take penalty kicks,

and without Hagi, it was a bit trickier.

Hagi's out. Bülent's injured.

Bülent is so devoted.

He may have a serious injury,
but he's still playing.

After an entire match, can you imagine

how hard those 30 minutes were
on the ten players left on the pitch?

He's on the right wing.

A cross from Parlour.

Taffarel... Bravo, Taffarel!

He jumped so well.

What a save.

If you ask me,
it was the save of the year.

After that save,

I started to think
we might manage not to lose.

Here's the whistle.

López Nieto didn't take any risks.

The winner will be decided
by a penalty sh**t-out.

Galatasaray and Arsenal players

gather around the midfield
in their respective halves of the pitch.

Ergün will be the first one to sh**t.

Here's Seaman against him.

We huddled up at the sideline

and started watching together.

The anxiety. The excitement.

A crucial moment.

Ergün...

He scores!

This was the goal we'd been waiting for.

Ergün scored.

It was a bit risky, but he pulled it off.

The best shot
is the one that finds the net.

As long as it crosses the line.

Then Arsenal's sh**ter missed.

He hit the bar. We scored.

Goal!

It's 2-0 right now!

Here's the whistle.

Parlour steps up.

He scores. It's 2-1.

Here's Ümit, everyone.

Ümit Davala.

{\an8}You look around as you're sh**ting.

For instance, I can see you
even though my focus is on here.

I can see what you're doing.

Just like that,
you can see the keeper's movements

while you're looking at the ball.

I noticed he started jumping to his right.

Come on, Ümit.

You're our hope.

He sends the keeper the wrong way.

Patrick Vieira.

Taffarel's on the line.

Come on, Taffi.

Come on!

It hit the bar!

Oh my God!

I remember how everyone jumped with joy
when Vieira missed the shot before me.

I was already on my way towards the ball.

{\an8}Come on, Popescu.

Oh my God!

If he scores, we win.

We get the cup.

Oh my God!

Come on, Popescu!

-The cup is ours.
-It's in, Levent!

The cup is ours!

Oh my God. Look at this beautiful scene.

Oh my God. It's ours.

Marvelous!

I went down on my knees.

I was like, "Wow, man."

I felt such a weight on my shoulders.
I didn't want to get up.

I was exhausted.

And two minutes before that,
I wasn't even tired.

I was even up for another 90 minutes
up to that point.

But when it was over,

I ran around for a while.
I walked a few steps.

I put my arms up for a second,
then I just went down.

That's how tired I was.

You push yourself.
You focus on it so hard.

You make calls.

That's such a burden to carry.

Every call you make there
is a historical one.

It was a flawless journey.

A flawless journey towards our goal.

Everything was done right.
There's nothing to criticize.

Galatasaray wins the UEFA Cup!

Galatasaray has won the UEFA Cup.

The 2000 UEFA Cup
has been awarded to Galatasaray.

It's definitely a feeling
not everyone gets to have.

First of all, I'm so happy
it was my father who did it.

I'm so proud of him.

I'd like to thank everyone

who has prayed for us,
who has made us feel loved,

who had faith in us.

I'm proud of my boys.

I hope our community
and our country enjoys it.

We believe
there'll be more success to come.

I hope our country will keep succeeding.

The locker room was so crowded.

We had let everyone in then,

because that cup belonged to everyone
starting with Galatasaray.

We celebrated so much.

On the pitch,
in the locker room, on the bus...

We even climbed on top of the goals.

We tried to untie the nets at some point.

The officials had to warn us.

"Let the nets go."

I had hoped before

that I'd be the first one to speak
at the press conference.

Our players

had already deserved this cup

because of their tactics,
their system, their mentality,

their effort, and their faith.

So I believe the cup
went to its rightful owner.

THE WORLD APPLAUDS
CIM-BOM WINS THE UEFA CUP

THEY ROCKED THE WORLD!

Fatih feels exhausted after games.

Because of the adrenaline, I guess.

When we were finally alone,
we reminisced about our entire journey.

All the way from the Bologna game
up until where we were then.

With its ups and downs,
we talked about what transpired.

{\an8}ATATÜRK AIRPORT
MAY 18, 2000

{\an8}The plane carrying
the UEFA Cup holders, our Galatasaray,

is now at the Istanbul Atatürk Airport.

I cannot believe my eyes.

I've never seen such a thing.

Words aren't enough.
It was such an emotional victory.

They believed they'd win, and they did.
This is a first in Turkish history.

My family asked me, "So how do you feel?"

I said, "Like a champion, but..."

"But which emotion? I don't know either."

"I just don't. It's my first time
being a European champion."

"I'd tell you otherwise, but..."

It felt so amazing.

I can't describe it.

So I...

What year was it? 2000.

I had laid out a certain mentality

from 1996 through 2000.

A game plan.

Certain tactics.

It gets very deep
if you take your time examining it.

Those four years are deeply meaningful
and they need to be examined thoroughly.

So he said and took his leave.

{\an8}So... I lived near Florya.

It was so close

I used to take walks around there
when I got bored.

I had a friend there. A source.

I usually called him to get the news.

He said, "Coach just left, man."

"What? He must be going home."

"No. He had his suit on."

It was around 11:00 p.m.

What could he be doing?

I poked around the next day.

I asked several people.

I finally got the details.

Apparently, Coach had a meeting
with Fenerbahçe that night.

FATİH TERİM IMPLIES HE'S LEAVING
THIS IS IT FOR ME
