02x08 - The Indoor Arm

Post by bunniefuu »

[TV reporter] The Salvadoreans
have learned to live with killings.

[g*nf*re]
[TV reporter 2] On Sunday,

President Reagan justified
the US intervention in the region.

[Reagan] There was only
Cuba in Latin America.

Today,
there are Nicaragua, Grenada,

and a serious battle
is going on in El Salvador.

But we don't need their quotes.

The American forces who have liberated
Grenada captured thousands of documents

that demonstrated Soviet intent

to bring communist revolution
home to the western hemisphere.

So, we're clear on the
intentions of the Sandinistas

and those who back them.

Let us be equally clear,

they provide a sanctuary
for terror.
[slurps]

Italy has charged Nicaragua
with harboring their worst t*rrorists,

the Red Brigades.

You want something to eat?

...in the international drug
trade.
[clears throat] No, gracias.

You've been sitting here
three hours.

You either order something
to eat, or you need to go.

...are deeply involved
in drug trafficking.

Some of you may remember
the inspiring scene

when the people of El Salvador

braved the threats and g*nf*re
of communist guerrillas,

Hey, you know what? Hey.

[door bell rings]

[car horn honking]

[chuckles]

[in Spanish]

- [squeals]
- [both laughing]

- [sighs]
- [mumbles, chuckles]

[laughs]

[laughing]

[laughs]

[chuckles]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[Ciela]

[sister]

Mmm.

[laughing]

[both laughing]

Sí.

[door opens]

[sister, in English]
Miss Danforth, we're here!

Oh, so this is Ciela.

Oh, my dear.

Look at you, you poor thing.

[sister]
She don't speak English.

[stammers] What was it
that you called her, Marianna?

Your little bull? [Chuckles]

Oh, I know what it was.
Tortilla!

[chuckles]
No, torita. [Chuckles]

Torita. Oh, I can see why.

Carrying her own backpack
and everything.

Just amazing.

I have the perfect treat

after that long journey.

[chuckling]

[Ciela] Gracias.

When Marianna told me
that you were coming,

I absolutely insisted
that you live here.

[stammers] Sisters should be
together after all.

[in Spanish]

[in English] Oh. Here, let me.
You poor thing. [Sighs] Oh.

[Ciela, in Spanish]

[in English]
There you go, señorita!

[sighs] Oh, it's so nice to
have family around. [Chuckles]

Well, you just
make yourself comfortable.

I'm gonna go down to the
mailbox and get my mail.

[both chuckling]
[Mrs. Danforth coughing]

[Marianna, in Spanish]

[Ciela]

[Marianna]

Uh-huh.
Mm-hmm.

[sighs]

- [Ciela]
- Mm-hmm.

[Mrs. Danforth, in English]
Marianna, dear!

Coming!

[In Spanish]

[chuckling]

[sniffs]
[both chuckle]

- [Mrs. Danforth, in English] Marianna!
- Coming.

[scraping]

[gardener grunts]

Ah. [Chuckles]

[gasps, screams]

[laughing]

[Mrs. Danforth coughing]

[coughing continues]

[coughing continues]

[in Spanish]

[inhales sharply]

Hmm.

[inhales sharply]

[chuckles]

[breathes deeply]

Hmm?

[chuckles]

[chuckles]

[both chuckling]

[speaks Spanish]
Ay!

[sighs]

[sniffs]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[gardener, in English] Most people
don't know how sweet those are.

[sighs] Uh, no English.

Oh.

[in Spanish]

[chuckles]
[chuckles]

[sucking]

[both chuckling]

El Salvador.

[in English] Japan.

[sighs]

Ah.
Ah.

[chuckles]

Yes. This is gonna go in here.
So, dig, okay? Yeah.

Ciela.

Ray.

Ray? Ray.
Ray.

And we've found
that the most effective approach

for our international students
is full immersion.

Mm-hmm.

She'll have ESL classes
in the afternoons.

Oh, and here's Miss Dunning.
She's excellent.

Miss Dunning? This is Ciela.

Nice to meet you, Ciela.

Um. I'm so sorry. They told me.

I just... I suppose I should
be getting to class.

They can't start without me.
Um, happy to have you with us.

So, yesterday we learned
that Jackson actively opposed

the idea of
an American aristocracy.

And although
he was controversial,

he presented himself as a
president for the common man.

Now, if we'll all turn
to page 82 of our textbooks.

Eighty-two.

Just follow along
as best you can.

There you go.
Eh, baño?

Sure.

Okay, everybody got it?

Um, who wants to read
out loud for me?

[Marianna, in Spanish]

[chuckles]

[sighs]

[coughing]

[in English] Ciela.

There you are.
Come in, come in.

[chuckles] You poor thing!

[chuckles]
Did you cut these for me?

I love them, thank you.
[chuckles, clears throat]

Do you know this show?

[coughs] Air wolf?

Did they have it in El Salvador?

It'll help with your English.

[coughing, sniffs]

[sighs]

Chanel Number Five.
Why, that's what I wear too.

[laughing] It's okay.

I won't tell the owner
of the house. [Chuckles]

[coughing]

Oh, what on earth are you doing?

[coughing]

What are you...
Putting that bib around my neck.

Do I look like a child?

And I can't breathe

with you looming over me.
[coughing]

[in Spanish]

Mmm.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[Mrs. Danforth, in English]
Ciela! Ciela!

[chuckles] Ciela,
my friends are here.

When you're finished swimming,
come say hi.

And for goodness' sakes,

you're gonna give me
a heart attack.

Go to the shallow end.

[chuckles]

[Mrs. Danforth]
Those sandwiches look wonderful.

- Don't they look so great?
- [club member 1] We're all hungry.

Oh, here she comes.

[club member 1]
We've heard so much about you!

I love that name. Ciela.

She just got here
from El Salvador.

And you know they have a
terrible civil w*r going on there.

Yeah, communists are trying
to overthrow the government.

Thank God for Ronnie.

Is, um, that how she... Hmm.

I don't think so.

[stammers] It was a car accident
when she was seven or eight.

- Isn't that right, Marianna?
- Yes, correct.

[club member 2] Ooh. Oh, no.

Poor thing.
Yeah.

Oh, come on, sit down.

We're gonna teach you how
to play gin rummy.

[laughs]

Cut! Okay. [Laughs]

[chuckles]

[pop music playing
in headphones]

[in Spanish]

[music stops]

[sighs]

[inhales deeply]

[inhales sharply]

[sighs]
[music resumes]

[school bell rings]

[in English] Ciela, sweetheart!
We have a surprise!

We've gotten you a gift.

Get in.

Now, this one is myoelectric,

which means you control it with signals
naturally generated by your own muscles.

It's cutting-edge technology.

[in Spanish]

That you control with your
own body, automatically.

[in English] A lot of people use
these, and they start at 5,000.

But if you want the whole hand
and the glove,

you're looking at 15,000.

[Mrs. Danforth] Well, all the ladies
in our bridge club are chipping in,

so price is no issue.

[in Spanish]

[in English]
This is too generous.

Oh.
Who do I make the check out to?

[grunts, sighs]
[arm whirring]

[strains]

Ay. [Grunts, sighs]

[in Spanish]

[speaks Spanish]

[grunts, strains]

[arm whirring]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[in English] Oh, uh, that...
That plant's garbage. Basura.

[in Spanish]

[in English] I, uh... I save.

[laughing]
Okay.

- [Marianna, in Spanish]
- [Ciela]

[in English]
Oh, that looks good. [Chuckles]

Ciela, dear,
where's your new arm?

[in Spanish]
[gasps]

[in English]
Did you leave it outside?

It can't get wet, dear.

It's an indoor arm!

You're gonna have to tell her,
Marianna.

Let's just hope the sprinklers
didn't go off.

[in English] I will.
[sighs]

Asparagus?
No. No.

Yeah, we're at w*r
with the skunks.

Zorillos. [Stammers]

Can't go into battle alone.

Hey, I'm talking to you.

[screams, in English] No! It
can't get wet. It is an indoor arm.

[chuckles] That's ridiculous.
Get up off your butt and help me.

Ay.

[in Spanish]

[stammers, in English] Dirty.

[sighs]

[screams]

[groaning]
[stammering] Ciela.

[groaning, in Spanish]

- [in English] It no let go. [Sobs]
- [stammers] Easy. Ciela, uh.

- [grunts] Easy.
- [breathing heavily]

[Ray] All okay.

- [Ray] Good. [Exhales deeply]
- [sighs]

[breathes heavily, sighs]

[in Spanish]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[exhales deeply]

[in English]
Um, you know, a long time ago,

I was at Manzanar.

Do you know what Manzanar is?

Uh...
Uh... Mm-mmm.

Uh, it was like a prison
where they put Japanese

and Japanese-American people
during World w*r II.

You understand?
Do, uh, something bad?

Oh. No, I... [stammers]
I was a kid. Niño.

They put me there just
because I was Japanese.

And many years after,
uh... Después.

The... The government gave me
a check for $20,000.

[stammers]
Veinte mil dólares para mí.

- [speaks Spanish, in English] You're rich?
- [chuckles] No.

[chuckles, snorts] Uh, no,

I... I didn't accept it.
No acepto.

Por qué?

Just because someone
gives you something

doesn't mean
you have to take it.

[in Spanish]

[sighs]

[in English]
Good morning, Miss Danforth.

Ah, Ciela, honey,
where's your arm?

[in Spanish]

[Mrs. Danforth coughs]

[in English]
She's just getting used to it.

But is something wrong with it?
It's supposed to be the top...

[coughs] ...top of the line.

I think it just needs
an adjustment.

Well, then you call the prosthetist
tomorrow and make an appointment.

Prosthetist.
Thank you.

Is that how you say it?
What a hard word.

[in Spanish]
[Mrs. Danforth coughing]

[scoffs]

[inhales deeply, sighs]

[inhales deeply]

[exhales sharply]

[sniffs]

[inhales sharply]

[sniffs, inhales sharply]

[in English]
Oh, you're wearing it.

[chuckles, stammers]
Is it better?

[chuckles] Thank you,
Miss Danforth. [Chuckles]

Do you do that every day?

You don't want the arm?

I just thought... [sighs] ...well,
you'd want to be more normal.

[sighs] I like my body.

You, eh, don't like m-my body,
but I do.

You are a very, eh,
nice lady, Miss Danforth.

Pero I do not come here

for a fancy school or a new arm.

I come here to be with
my sister. [Inhales shakily]

[exhales sharply, coughing]

[gasping, coughing]

- Mrs. Danforth. Mrs... Mrs. Danforth.
- [breathes deeply, coughing]

[in Spanish]

Are you okay?

[groaning, coughing]

[in English] Are you okay?
Okay, yes. Walk with me.

[Mrs. Danforth coughing]

[Marianna, in English]
Miss Danforth. Miss Danforth!

Ciela!

[in Spanish]

[Mrs. Danforth moaning]

[inhales sharply]

[sniffs]

[breathes shakily]

[coughing, groaning]

[Mrs. Danforth moaning]

[moaning continues]

[coughing, groaning]

[in English] Well, uh, thank
you very much for all your work.

Um, she felt very close
to both of you.

Uh, anyway, I should probably
take one final walk-through.

Uh, when you leave
would you mind, uh,

- taking that box to the trash? Thank you.
- Oh, of course. Of course

[chuckles]

So, where are you going to go?

Oh, I found a studio apartment
in Van Nuys. [Chuckles]

I've lived here for 22 years.

[chuckles] It's longer
than I've lived anywhere.

Who... Ah.
What about your garden?

Oh, it was never mine.

Who is going to take care of it?

Who knows? Uh, skunks.
[grunts, laughs] -[laughs]

[laughs, snorts] Ah.

For your next garden.

[sighs]

[sighs]

[inhales sharply]

[sighs]
